Google's Backup system - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

For those of you who use this, how effective is it vs titanium backup?

5 stars
Imho it is the gold standard.

It works fairly well. Remembers apps, different settings like wifi spots, bookmarks.
For app specific data, it's hit or miss. Mainly because it's up to the developer to decide if they want to include their app in the backup service.
That being said, I use titanium 99.9% of the time, just so I know for sure that my app data is being saved.

Thanks for the replies. TB used to be reliable, but now I've found restoring data is hit and miss; can cause many fc's.
I'll go ahead and try Googles backup system i guess

I flash quite a bit, especially with my old epic 4g. Went from gingerbread stock to CM9 to AOKP often. When restoring data for certain apps, it can cause issues

I've personally run it from eclair to ics, on hero, droid, nexus one, evo, evo shift, thunderbolt, transformer, transformer prime and now evolte. stock, fresh, viper, miui, aokp, evervolv, revolver, cm and never a fc. I'm pretty sure the problem would be with the apps themselves, not titanium.

It's not an app its just the backup option in the phone itself. I dont have my phone in front of me but its somewhere in the settings where you can check a box that allows google to backup and restore your apps and settings if you have to factory reset.

Working Titanium Backup - CM9 A.0

Let's be real, this deserves its own thread. Many people live by the sword of Titanium Backup and it's currently broken in the first Alpha of CM9 for the Touchpad. I've searched through about 9 threads and several info files and have yet to resolve this issue.
So far there seems to be a Superuser issue that doesn't seem to effect Titanium Backup Version 4.0.2, which you can get HERE. That said, restoring files continues to fail. Has anyone had success with this? If we can get a fix I'll update this post to help others.
i agree it deserves a thread...but why in development section? why not in General or Q and A section?
I would suggest just using important apps only until this is fixed. Way too alpha of a build to load up a ton of apps.

Because I'm stupid and didn't pay attention. A mod should move this.

My biggest attempt was to check compatibility and display of apps I use regularly. I'm not concerned with stability at this point, I just wanted to load a ton of data and apps and see what sticks.
I just flashed CM9 over CM7 - everything worked fine and all my apps are still there
I don't see why they don't just use My back up root until titanium is fixed. It put all my apps and data back perfect.

I just flashed cm alpha0 and ran into this problem. Will try the 4.0.2 and restore some of my apps just to try everything. Looking forward to New versions with fixed titanium.
Will try my Backup root. First have to migrate Backups from phone
You know if you use ACMEinstaller2 there's no need to wipe anything. I was able to keep my apps/data/settings and I'm yet to run into any issues. This was mentioned in Dalingrin's OP on RootzWiki.

And Titanium Backup still works for you? Didn't for me.
Freezing apps does not work, and restoring apps only works if you set the app proccessing mode to INTERACTIVE.
I remember a similar issue on CM7 for the Epic 4g.

My point is you won't lose any of your apks + data. The only reason I use TB is make batch backups of my apps (which I did prior to flashing CM9), since i didn't have to wipe, not being able to restore is not an issue for me.
As worthless as this thread is becoming, it does appear that the newest version of Titanium Backup (4.7.4) does seem to be working after removing and updating superuser. Well, once at least. Functionality is back to broken again it seems.

It seems like this is the logical answer for now. I've always wondered why more people don't use My Back Up Root instead of TB anyway.

If you first install the app from market, you can install the data from titanium. That worked for me. The only hassle is that you have to do it one by one.
Edit: I'm running the pro version 3.8.7. There's a link for it here somewhere.
thanks! i needed TB to run whatsapp on CM9
4.5.2.2 is working for me. dont know if itll work for everyone though.

Flashed my friends galaxy s

So I flashed a gummy ics from to my friends fascinate. Had a bit of trouble with the restore, unfortunately losing the contacts. It still runs a bit slow and all the programs lag and force close. I've ran fix permissions countless times. Any suggestions?

Thanks man, I'll try that stuff when I get home. With doing the wipe, if I do a backup of all the apps and app data, doesnt that kind of make the data wipe redundant?

depends on your back up methods. i use google to back up contacts and tibu to back up apps. after a data wipe i just resync goole and restore app only(no app data) from tibu and your back in business.
I always bypass the Google account, to do an app restore first. Only restore the data portion of the apps that are most important. Like a checkbook app, dolphin, Tapatalk, etc. The rest be sure to just restore the app.
One that's done add your Google account and let the contacts sync, etc.

What is a good back up app besides TiBu?

I just need something that does batch back ups, and relatively fast.
rom toolbox
you can use the app manager and root browser parts, just careful with the other options, you can mess up rom and have to sbf

You can't use TiBu to backup CM7/Blur apps and restore them to CM9.
.... You will get the same results using any restore program to go from gb to ics... Has nothing to do with tibu but the fact that most apps are a bit diff on ics

So I can't restore any of my apps to CM9 in any way?
From my understanding, apps can be backed up and restored with no issues. They are just apps you will be downloading again from the Play Store anyway. Your system apps though, dont try. Use titanium backup to backup your USER apps and their data and thats it. No system data or system apps or anything else. When you get CM9 installed, they should restore with no problem.

I'm on cm9 now. I don't remember if I restored from TiBu after switching or not. But the worst that will happen is it will give you and error or it will install but not open. But I really don't think you will have problems. Just don't mess with the system settings and system apps.
If you're worried about losing something, just do a nandroid backup of your ROM before doing anything. Then if something goes wrong, restore the nandroid.
I haven't had a single error restoring apps in cm9 using TiBu. I never restore system stuff anyway but I can see where it would cause problems with the different framework.
Is everyone on CM9 for the X2 liking it so far? I was CM9 for the X but my X crapped out on me and Verizon is sending me a X2 as replacement. I understand the cam corder still isn't working but has anyone tried using LG Camera for the cam corder? It worked for me on the X with CM9.

I have used App Backup and Restore before but found that in flashing ROMs it is best to just re-install via Google or nandroid back.

A word of advice for TiBu users [JB/CM10]

A word of advice to the the people using TiBu to restore apps onto jellybean:
I've seen many people having trouble restoring with TiBu especially coming from ICS. Even when I was still using my S2 LTE.
Give Rom Toolbox Pro a try. You can easily backup your apps and data as a batch, and restoring them is a piece of cake. Never had any problems.
Although it is considered better practice to restore apps without their data, as it could potentially cause instability issues due to bad data. I've always restored the data as well and, in my experience, had no issues in particular. Even when the data was originally ICS based.
Just throwing it out there.

Isn't rom manager a collection of several apps in one? The back up interface looks identical to tibu but requires too much digging to get to.
They are both good tools but it seems like tibu is more flexible with app backups and is updated much more often.

Zero problem restoring apps from GB, ICS, or JB (upwards each time) from TiBu here, on both my Galaxy Note and Nexus 7. Why N7? I moved TiBu data from another device there and installed it from there.
All fine. Normal caveats apply.. Must reboot for services/running apps to start, must recreate accounts, anything that needs to run as a service sometimes might even need to be manually ran, etc.. None of this is ICS/JB/TiBu specific.
Just don't restore system info between roms and there should never be a problem

I've always used "My Backup Pro" since the Dell Streak, as apparently TiBu didn't play well with it. I never seem to have the problems people report with TiBu.
I always restore APK's first, reboot, then restore data to a FEW apps that I know won't be problematic...
I think you can use "My Backup Root" to try it free...

While I own both the paid version of tibu and rtp I prefer using tibu for backups. It was made to do just that and it's the best at it IMO.
TB is by far the best backup app out there. The problem is not with TB but with the user who doesn't know how to use it correctly.

Most of the problems people report are due to user error. If people would rtfm and learn they would have a much better experience.

Best tool for backing up and restoring user apps?

What do you guys recommend for someone who likes to flash roms frequently for backing up and restoring user apps? I have titanium backup with option to backup user and system apps. Is it advisable to restore system apps after flashing a new Rom? Its such a pain to flash new Rom than try to install the apps from the googleplay again etc.
So any suggestions?

TB for sure. and its not a good idea to restore system apps when changing roms. it will more than likely break things.
RomCleaner and done
I have Rom cleaner, but it won't restore user apps unless they're installed. I've noticed that with some roms, singning into Google account automatically starts downloading apps from googleplay but it doesn't happen with all the roms.

Carbon backup. Easy to use and simple. I use that in combination with MyBackup (for contacts and things like call logs) and it's a very easy solution.
