Making a good Browsers - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Why is it so hard to make a browser that is just as good as a desktop browser? Every one I try either lags, freezes or just wont work at all.... Stock ICS browser is the best one so far, but still not 100% good.
Any clues or comments?

Well, the Prime isn't managing browsers very well... BUT, when i use stock browser with AdAway and Browser2Ram (both require root access), it becomes faster and smoother then my quad-core desktop!
Every problem except Wifi and Gps are from software, not hardware. So with tweaks here and there, you can 'fix' them. (Excluding other problems caused by bad manufactured units)

If I had to guess (thank you Google) he's probably talking about this on github.

Apparently there is a new browser build in the soon to be released firmware that improves things rather significantly. The issues however, run far deeper and apparently a lot of the Prime's issues are, while not fixed, a lot less noticeable with said firmware.

And where in my post did I NOT use proper English? Educate me, oh great teacher....

He was referring to your title, but his *****ing was rather superfluous (and I consider myself quite the grammar Nazi).
Any who, this might be a silly question, but have you tried dolphin browser? It's been fantastic for me on both Virtuous .21 and the June 15th CM9 nightly.

Thanks for the browser2ram solution! I compiled with AIDE and it made the browser way better!

What's wrong with Chrome? I've been using it since I got my Prime (2 weeks ago) and it works great.

Running the NEW Fennc pre alpha

So does anyone know how to successfully run the new Fennec pre alpha on a non rooted Droid Eris on 2.1.?
no, but in the brief article I read it said you need a droid or nexus one
its not really possible, it has major force close issues.
I downloaded the apk and instaled it on 2.1 root and experinced fc after a few moments of running. It sucks...really want to try it out.
Running it on droid, its nothing to call home about.
with me being on aloysius 2.0v6, and all my apps instaled, I could not even make room to try and install a 10mb apk... it's actually the one and only true time i wanted apps2sd on the eris.
are you all using this build? http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/28/firefox-now-available-for-android-2-0-and-above-still-at-pre-al/ it seems like the newest one out there.
Yay I'm running non-rooted Droid Eris 2.1 leakv3 and the latest pre-alpha just runs for a second and then crashes every time I run it, any fixes?

Whats wrong with it? It loads incredibly fast, has a nice UI, offers a nice homepage launcher, etc. I think it's a hell of a browser, from what I understand they load most of the page on their end and send the finished product to you. The only complaint i have is lack of multitouch but that is in no way a deal breaker.
If you don't believe the speed difference a/b between the stock browser and opera with androidcentral.com
Last time I used opera, it was just too clunky and navigating through the menus was a big pain. Im currently using skyfire 2.0 and it does the same thing with loading the page through its servers first to take the load off the phone. It hd some really nice features as well. I highly suggest everyone try it. There was a good tutorial on phandroid.com about all the features. Check it out

Using Skyfire as well..it is way better than Dolphin, stock, Xscope and Opera. It is fast and somehow it remembers your bookmarks. Got real tired of saving bookmarks/favorites and losing them when you installed a new OS

CM9 Touchpad - Everything works!!

Because we can still boot into WebOS. I started thinking about all the folks complaining about what doesn't work on their Touchpad, and thought about someone who comes to the forums and might be afraid to flash because they'll lose the camera, or youtubeHD, or HuluPlus and just thought I'd remind folks that rebooting into WebOS is easier than some of the crazy work arounds people are trying. It's actually pretty amazing to be able to do what we do. Most phones that get an Alpha ROM with lots of bugs, have to deal with all of it......we can just boot back into WebOS and all is well.........so, Play with CM9, enjoy some apps and games, and the fun that it is, then boot into WebOS and watch a movie, or skype with your mom.........it's a GREAT friggen tablet!
So what doesn't work in CM9? I put CM7 on my tablet yesterday and the wifi not working and failing to connect all the time is driving me nuts. Almost to the point where I might just sell this thing.
Don't be foolish. There are threads 'aplenty dealing with and solving the wifi issue. Typically, it is caused by other routers near you using the same channel and changing your routers channel will solve the problem.
But if you are really so ticked off you want to sell, how much are you asking and is it a 32 or 16gb?

for me its skype. It's great to be able to boot to WebOS to video chat, but the WebOS skype program doesn't do landscape for some reason, only portrait - which is exceedingly dumb since the official case stands the touchpad up in LANDSCAPE

I guess I don't understand the title. Cm9 everything works.
Netflix doesn't work. But at least change the title to represent this subject right. Maybe choose: between cm9 AND webOS, everything works (except netflix)
Just a thought. Ur title lures people in thinking that cm9 updated so everything works. And that isn't the case at all.
Just a friendly reminder.

I read this on Dalingin's Twitter. I guess I meant video codecs. The performance is great, I just want Netflix and HD Youtube.
Put on the alpha 0.6 after wiping with CWM. Works great. Wifi connects with no issues unlike CM7.
I keep seeing posts about HD video playing for Youtube and Hulu not working. I assume if I copied a bunch of HD movies onto it for travel they will have issues and general video playing would suck up battery life. Is hardware decoding in the works? Does CM7 suffer the same issue?
As far as video playback goes, I've been using arc media tab player. Using the regular. Avi files with very little problems. Its been great while on vacation and on the long flight.

[Q] Transformer prime laggy

After listening to all good remarks, I finally got a hold of this tablet. This being a quad core tablet, I assumed it should be fast. But to my surprise, it was actually not a really great experience. Things lagged every now and then. And it seems to be even worse when browsing. I tried alternative browsers but they all seem to be the same. Even Chrome Beta!

As far as I am aware the IO scheduling is not really what it ought to be with the Prime, with regards to browser lag though, I have switched plugins to on-demand in the stock browser settings and that helps a bit.
Some beta testers of the soon to be released firmware are reporting major improvements across the board, so hopefully you won't have long to wait.
Which version of the ASUS firmware are you on? Just out of curiosity.
This is not a question though. If you are having lagging issues; you could try to do a cold reset. This may help out as it has with others. The browser on the other hand has been an ongoing issue. You can help this by installing adblock, use opera, turn flash to on demand, or use the browser2ram tweak here on xda. There should be an update to help also sooner or later.

The Chrome Beta is known to cause the browser lag. Even it just being installed and you're using a different browser.
Uninstall chrome beta. Uninstall flash and reinstall flash.
Try opera mobile. It's been the best for me so far. I definitely have no browser lag, but did when chrome was installed. Same on my gtablet running an ICS rom.

Hmm, okay will try.
I have noticed occasional lag on my Prime from time to time most often while using the browser. Asus has indicated that it might be a problem with nV Flash and that it will be resolved in the next update. I guess we'll see. Really the occasional lag is my only complaint with the Prime, but it doesn't stop me from saying my experience is mostly positive.

Seems to me that now is the time to wait a bit longer before going with a Custom Rom. The Asus 4.1 update is probably only a few weeks away and once the developers have that to work with the custom crowd will improve rapidly. So far, every time I read about a 4.1 ROM, it comes with a list of the things that are not working yet. So you will probably get a fully functional JB ROM from Asus first.

Virtuous is another solid ICS choice. I think it is still in development/supported. That said, I'm currently running AW2.1, too. I'm not looking to be on the cutting edge right now, I need a daily driver. I will probably go CM10 or with a modded stock ROM after the ASUS JB update drops. I'm really looking forward to JB.
Honestly I think ICS has been a BIG part of the problem for the Prime. Its image had already been tarnished with the hardware issues but the crashes and instability are much worse from a daily use standpoint. I got mine in January too and it was much more stable for me prior to ICS, the most recent build (.28) in fact has been a complete wreck on my device (I even wiped it and reinstalled .28 to try to get it going properly) and is what prompted me to unlock. Really, the hardware has been no problem on mine. The GPS is dead, but I actually knew it probably would be going in so it is not a biggie and my WiFi and BT are really no problem, Cameras are fine, etc. But not being able to basic things like web browsing and running GMail without crashing were a deal breaker.
I still get occasional reboots/flakiness with AW2.1 but it is based on ASUS ICS. I'm really hopeful for JB, as I mentioned since they seemed to have got it righ t on the N7.
Wifi
I just finished installing CM10 preview. I have been running it on my SIII for a couple days now and really like it. I'll report back in a few days with an update about the Prime running it.
I also ran into a problem getting wifi to work on any JB based ROM, going to the advanced tab in CWM and fixing permissions seemed to clear the problem up. Thought I would pass this info along, I couldn't find anybody reporting similar issues.
Ive been running JM CM10 Preview no cheery picks and every version gets better. it is a complete daily driver if you dont need Bluetooth streaming or NTFS support.
i haven't had any browser force closes, i can actually install multiple playstore apps at once and still use the playstore with out getting "playstore is not responding do you want to wait"
its fast and clean.
since Asus pretty much uses stock AOSP roms anyways, and the CM10 JB Preview is pretty much AOSP then I would wait personally for the Asus OTA for 4.1.
you get to keep your warranty and know that JB will resolve almost all the Force close issues wit browsers etc.

If the issue is the browser, why not just install Chrome on the stock ROM? Personally I have never really used the built in browser. I keep Dolphin around for the once in a while I need flash but otherwise use Chrome. Chrome is the default in 4.1 anyway.
Does the JB they will improve the wifi?
Increasing the signal?
Because I did not get one accessory that ASUS released.

Without Flash the Prime is just poor...

What is it worth a tablet that cannot play video or flash stuff browsing/reading news or else?
I am so disappointed and regretting to have made this upgrade, trusting some people who claimed to have a
workaround for Flash Player.
The next thing is hoping that a method for locked device but rooted is found to downgrade, cause I was more satisfied then than now.
It was not enough to have others issues with the Prime, rebooting, freezing, BlueTooth and bad WiFi signal.. now we do not even have Flash working.
Well if a workaround that works is not found, I think I will try desperate to downgrade and stay on ICS.

Did downloading the apk and installing it not work for you?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774336
All you have to do. Is sideload flash.apk and stock browser. apk and it will work fine. Flash works flawless on my Nexus 7. Refer to Nexus 7 forums for details. There's a thread in there with the flash.apk and browser.apk for you to download and install. Very simple and easy to do. Just follow directions OP gives you. But believe me, plenty of xda users JB devices are using flash just fine.
I sideloaded Flash and it works fine. I use Boat Browser + Flash + JB without any problems.
Additionally, more websites are using HTML5 video instead of flash. And if you just bought the tablet for flash, you're really not getting the point of a tablet. Tablets and smartphones are more app based rather than browser based.
I still have flash on the stock browser after updating to JB.

Additionally, more websites are using HTML5 video instead of flash. And if you just bought the tablet for flash, you're really not getting the point of a tablet. Tablets and smartphones are more app based rather than browser based.

To some people.
Others don't like having 1000 applications for every website out there (youtube, gmail, xda, etc.) when you can use browser for that.
Flash is walking the green mile

Flash is still there, it won't show up in your apps but it's still there.... at least on my device it is. I have no problems playing flash content and it's faster than before..... if you got to settings, apps, all, you'll see it's still there. Also Adobe will continue to push updates to AdobeĀ® Flash via Google Play to those devices that had AdobeĀ® Flash previous to the Jelly Bean update.

I never thought I'd say this, but I don't really miss Flash at all in day to day browsing now. Most sites that I use don't use it hugely, or have converted to HTML5, and for video I mainly use YouTube anyway so the built in app works fine.
I have been using Chrome since it was first released, and have only gone back to the stock browser for flash once or twice in the last few months. So for me, I haven't lost anything, and probably wouldn't notice for a while if I did. The main thing I notice is that flash-based ads don't appear, and I consider that a feature.

What is it worth a tablet that cannot play video or flash stuff browsing/reading news or else?
I am so disappointed and regretting to have made this upgrade, trusting some people who claimed to have a
workaround for Flash Player.

The fact is that all Android tablets from here out will be in the same boat. So this doesn't make the Prime "poor" unless you want to say all Android tablets made from now on are "poor". Then, don't forget that the iPad has never supported flash. Therefore if you follow your reasoning to it's logical conclusion, then the iPad is "poor" too. So where does that leave you? Well, you won't be using a tablet or phone for web browsing. Not any tablet or phone. The work arounds will keep it going a bit longer, but it is dead.
This is another useless thread. Its really upsetting, especially now the op got flash working and the whole point of the thread is irrelevant. Update your first post and title OP!
I dont find the thread upsetting or useless at all. I think its a good informative thread for any users that do want flash .

ARM tablets maybe, but x86/x64 Wintel tablets don't have that problem at all.
