Home screen redraw - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone noticed when exiting some apps (including xda dev pro) you get a lot of redraws of the home screen?
I'm sure my s2 didn't do this so often. I'm just using touchwiz.
Any fixes or ideas?

I've noticed this a few times but only when my memory reaches >600 mb shown in task manager. When I free the ram it disappears, give it a try

Are you on LE8 or LE9 ?
Not sure this is the reason but I've noticed that this is happening a lot less since i flashed LE9

I noticed the same thing when exiting the browser. The system is running out of ram badly and quitting touchwiz launcher. Some very big webpages also won't load completely. Example is the HTC one preview on swedroid.se.

[Q] Launcher performance

Am I the only one that is sometimes seeing major lag when an app closes and the launcher redraws? In by case it is sometimes over a second.
Well known issue that has been mentioned already in numerous threads. I use SS launcher so don't have that problem.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
the stock launcher will not lag on its own, check for background cpu utilization with os monitor app and disable those apps .

If you read carefully enough, Dr. Paul, you'll find that you are on ALF2!
Is LF2 only through Kies? I got the OTA update to LF1, and that's all the OTA updater says is available. Or it's just VodaGroan being rubbish as usual.

Been looking in the forum and found this issue under another heading. I fixed it by rooting and changing the davlik VM heap size from 256 to 128mb. How did Samsung manage to screw this up?

Another thing to consider is whether you've got power saving on or off? If it's on and CPU power saving is turned on, the CPU runs at 800mhz rather than 1400mhz. This will show a noticeable difference in smoothness.

i just wanna share how i got rid of the lag and home respawn issue on my sgs3... i'm not saying it is a fix but these are the only things i did that work for me... there is no harm in trying...
1. disable double tap home button to activate s voice.
2. disable s voice using application manager
3. reboot... and after 3 days, no lag or whatsoever... but there was always the home respawn thing when i'm running a lot of apps on background...
4. uninstall facebook app... this app seems to eat most of the memory... reboot... now, i don't need to close any program running thru task manager... i check it and see 12 apps running but never had a respawn.. all is well now... i don't even think of rooting flashing a rom now... everything just seems to be running so well...
**i know some of you would say that it's not an option to uninstall FB app, i for myself would love to use it but i'd rather have a lag and respawn free sgs3 and use the FB desktop mode... but then again...that's just me...

ICS very very slow...

So ive finally raged and unlocked my bootloader to get rid of the bloatware.. Still its damn laggy..Homescreen redraws Alter using the Browser or heavy games apps are slow to load( sometimes even 15 seconds for chrome...) help is really appreciated!!

I had the same issues on ics, and now on ka09. Though considerably less noticeable on the new kernel. Still major lag in opening apps, and launcher redrawing, using adwlauncher ex.

so there's nothing we can do about it?
Mine had nowhere near those issues. Try wiping the phone and uninstall bloatware.
ICS is working perfectly here,no bugs at all, even without rooting.

I found it unusably slow. I then rebooted it TWICE and left it 15 minutes for the media database to update. It is now smooth as silk.
Just got to sort this one last NFC issue and I will be happy.

Done this twice now.Nothing changed. This is just unacceptable.
I find ICS removing unused apps too fast from the RAM. For example if i go into contacts and Call someone and then in the browser it will take the contacts 3/4 seconds to load again.

[Q[ ram always high and phone is laggy

hi guys,
I got my S3 about 3 weeks ago, (a noob in android) i recently flashed the rom to an unbranded version because i hate the bloatware but one thing i noticed is that my ram is really high on the device and when scrolling through the homescreens there's sometimes a delay in response or goes to the next screen with lag. when i go to task manager my ram is always above 500mb of 779mb. Even when i clear the memory it goes down to about 400 but then comes back up.
what could be the issue. don't really have anything running in the background. i did download go keyboard and go sms pro but I'm pretty sure that is not the cause of it. it even happened when i had the branded version of the firmware installed.
any ideas?
Thanks
Go software is very laggy. But yeah I have very few running processes and have high ram usage. I don't know why. It was the same with my s2. But I'm not sure y your laggy. Mines a beast
Wipe cache?
it I do ever get laggy I just hold home button and swipe to end background running processes
Hope this helps mate.

Ive tried wiping cache stopping useless processes but even after that its still quite laggy and when i swipe to remove that even lags... pretty bizzare
RAM usage is supposed to be high. Please read the link in my signature. The lag must be something else. Possible drawing issue on whatever launcher you have.

The GPU may not be very good on the sIII, the GPU controls video, scrolling, animations, ect. But my guess would be that its just a badly coded ROM. Go on the forms for that ROM and see if its a common issue.

Have you tried:
Setting animation speed to 0.5 from 1.0 in settings/ development?
Enabling gpu rendering?
Setting maxheapsize=128 mb (from 256 mb) in build. prop?
Clear both caches, reset permissions, reboot
Also, removing all bloatware helps

you need to be rooted, edit /system/build.prop using root explorer or es explorer (the /system file system needs to be mounted read/write first)
you have to reset permissions from cwm (clockworkmod), again this needs root

I so know it comes to my next question that when you I exit an app the home screen redraw, and this is why I'm wondering why is my ram usage so high when I'm not using much I can the background or not using any launchers. I'm using beautiful widgets super clock screencast button and spanner month with a live background surely those can't use up 500mb ram can it?

How do I stop android closing my browser when left to run in background?

It's all about ram. If you have 512 mb and running ICS or JB, just forget it..1 gb would be just ok, if you don't open much apps. You can set priority of apps in some tasks manager, maybe system tuner? Never tried... Waiting for the galaxy note with 2 gb!

Still doesn't work. Pages still have to reload after inactive for a while.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Android is a totally different operating system than iOs (and also requires more Ram for itself)
It runs a lot of tasks in the background unlike iOs, which makes it a lot more adaptable and flexible but also more resource-intensive.
Secondly apps are categorized in groups, which are then consecutively killed based on their OOM (Out of memory) score, the lowest group being "empty app" and regrouping all apps that are no longer being needed. Typically "empty" is killed when there are 90MB left (customizable if rooted).
First off you may want to check what eats your Ram (Java is one of the worst languages for Ram in the entire universe) and kill/freeze/remove those processes.
Then take a look into zRam for extended Ram (swap) and set swappiness to 99
There once were experimental patches that forced selected tasks into swap instead of killing them but since they were hooked right into memory management, that used up lots of Cpu cycles and caused strange behaviours - sadly.
Btw, needing 1Gig for Ics or Jb is just bollocks. Galaxy S1's run awesome under Ics and even such devices as the 256MB Ace get a lot better.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
How do I customize the thing? The part where you say I need to be rooted.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Its only reload if you closed it on tasks
So dont do it
Sent from my GT-I9300
when you want to leave the browser in the background do you press back button or home? I have the experience with facebook app that if i press back than when i get back to the app it reloads as if i closed it, but if i press home then come back to the app it's there as i left it. As to the browser can't really say anything as I use maxthon browser and don't usually have reloading problems.
One such app is "Advanced tools".
However it is strictly recommend to leave those values alone unless you REALLY know what you are doing since tweaking these values without any knowledge will only worsen the problem or make your phone more or less unusuable with lag.

I explained a few posts earlier exactly when and how Android kills processes. Inactivity is a LRU factor but certainly not the trigger to kill an app.

Question
Sorry to bump an old thread, but has anyone actually found a solution to this problem? I've tried supercharger, minfree manager, RAM manager pro, and Galaxy Tuner. None have proven to be an actual solution to the problem that seems to be baked right in to the heart of all versions of Android after eclair (I'm actually on the Epic, not the GS3).
Is this fixable or am I just chasing my tail on this one?

UPDATE: Current list of things tried
- Supercharger/Bulletproof
- MinFree Manager
- RAM Manager Pro
- Galaxy Tuner
- "build.prop" trick
- "local.prop" trick

Home Dcreen Lag

Anybody found any lag while switching back to home screen from the browser. Sometime there is lag sometimes no lag... When its laggin..the weather widget will come then the icons.. its frustrating to see this lag on S3,which is the most powerful phone till date. That's the launcher redrawing itself.
Basically because of heavy amount of RAM used by Android, it kills some of the other processes including launcher.
Even I get it and I hate hate HATE it.
There are some solutions but it will require root and it's not very simple.
It's embarrassing to be honest.
Yep I get that too, still Samsung seem to think that the amount of ram the s3 has is sufficient!

Just locking Launcher in memory or Reducing the OOM priority will fix it. Why is Samsung not fixing it.
If I'm not wrong, the JB leaks doesn't fix it either. The only gripe I have about this phone.
iOS get this right, unfortunately.

Really JB solves this?? Hey man I have unrooted phone... there are so many JB thread.. can u guide me which one to flash(the one which is most stable).. and before that I also need to root my phone... can u give me the link to CF root or any other... I am on Baseband version DDLH1
On JB I don't have any home screen redraw using Nova Launcher (I had on ICS). Don't know if it still happens with Touchwiz.

Well I can assure you it occurs a lot less (i used to be really annoyed by it on ICS - I'm using LI5 right now and haven't noticed a redraw yet).
You don't need to be rooted if you don't want to be. All you need to do is head here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835931 This is the latest LI7 JB leak, flash through Odin (follow instructions on first page) and all should work fine from then on (assuming you have the international galaxy s3).
Please note I think you will lose your data - in that case you may want to be rooted first so you back up your data and then flash the LI7 rom and then restore the data (for apps and games only). In this case just find the cfroot for Galaxy S3 and flash the latest cfroot kernel via Odin (then back up using titanium backup or other app from the playstore).
