Hey everyone.
I'm a paranoid kinda guy, so one of the first things I installed on my phone was Prey. This way, I can probably trace it down if it gets stolen - and there's also Lookout's Plan B, so I don't have any issues in the tracking department.
What I do have an issue with is my data on the phone. If I password protect the phone, a thief would probably just pull out the battery and try to sell it - I can't track it down anymore. If not, a thief would have access to all my contacts, messages, emails and chat logs - not something I'd like, especially since the thief would get Plan B's reports and would probably realize the phone's being tracked.
So what I'm looking for is an app that deletes my personal data on command - say, when I text a specific message. I've looked high and low, but didn't manage to find anything like this. Does it exist, or would I have to write it from scratch?
Also, in the case that the thief actually knows what he's doing, is there a way to password protect the recovery image?

To be honest If the thief knows what he is doing then he will just wipe the phone once he realizes its locked. There are a few apps out there that will allow you to remotely wipe your device. Might want to look into that.

I don't want to wipe it completely if it's stolen, I want to wipe my personal data (contacts, emails, etc.) and maybe find it. Maybe you do, but I don't have enough money to make "buy another one" an option.
I think this app can help you:
Lookout
I have read that it can wipe out your data and find your phone, its free but if you want to have more benefits you can pay

is there any way to permanently delete text messages.. so for instance if my phone was was sold on there was no way they could recover the data from it ?
Why, what you up to ??
I think a master reset would wipe it but I guess everything on the phone is still in memory but not accessable through normal means but if the CIA wanted to they'd give it to a data recovery company and get files back from ram like you can recover deleted flash files as long as they are not overwritten.
Though I dont realy know, just guessin.
If its real important then a big hammer always works
are you mental? texts are deleted permanently when you press delete. in fact, the entire thread of texts is. go on, try it. delete a text & try to get it back...

What? No. Do you even know how deletion works on any normal device today? It stays in memory until it's overwritten with something else. And even then it's possible to recreate the data.

it doesn't work like that.. the data will still be there.. it's just removed from the index so you can't get it through the normal user interface.... you'd need to do a full format of the intenal memory and then rebuild the phone system.. probably possible but I'm not interested enough to look for a solution!

You have raised a valid point regarding sensitive data on mobile devices, Its just like your PC but in your pocket.
Ive never sold a pc but if I did I think I would destroy the drives just in case. The same could be said for these phones with their gig of flash storing all your passwords, emails, texts, online banking details, ebay account details, paypal .. etc... Ok Im being a little paranoid here but its getting that way.
A security data wiper/writer could be a good app to develop.

I don't think you're paranoid. You have a valid point there! The amount of information we have that is critically personal is enormous! I never sell my phones to people outside my family and I probably never will.

you can get a program called kill disk for a pc which will totaly wipe all data from drive so nothing can be recovered! am sure it would be possible to do it for a mobile but as on pc you will need to reinstall your OS which in x10 case would be andriod.
The most secure way is using professional third-party software like iPhone Data Eraser, which is a reliable and effective tool to smash everything on your iPhone, including contacts, messages, photos, videos, apps, account info, passwords, photos and other personal data.

I was just curious to find out if there was a general consensus as to the better app for recovering your phone. I realize that there are quite a few that do the job. I just want to find the one that does the job and does it well, because if my phone does ever get stolen/lost, I only have one shot to get it right. Trial and error doesn't really give me peace of mind when it's something you actually need it to work.
Any opinions?

I think he's referring to tracking software...
I've seen some nice Tasker scripts that will lock up the phone and e-mail you its GPS coordinates if you send a certain text to it. This way you would get more for your money since Tasker does so many other amazing things.
Have you looked into WaveSecure? seems pretty good, https://www.wavesecure.com/wavesecure/android.aspx
I've heard some good things about Prey but in all honesty, it's good to keep things locked down with either encryption/passcode unlock too. I don't know the statistics on recovery of lost phones but being a pessimistic/optimist I'd say hope for the best but expect the worst. Sync your contacts/emails/etc on a regular basis (maybe once a week and you can use tasker for this), keep sensitive personal information off the phone if possible, etc.
Froyo might let you remote wipe (I heard it would be a feature for enterprise lvl stuff) but if the person who found it is tech savvy (pretty much anyone who can flash a rom) they might just pull the SIM & wipe the phone which would moot any security features you might have in place. I could be wrong though, I don't have a lot of experience in anti-theft and should probably look more into protecting my own phone too and seeing what options are available.
I do know that insurance will cover the loss but it doesn't help if you don't have a backup of all your important info somewhere. Oh, and before I forget, in addition to contacts/email you can sync your calendar too. You just need to make sure when you create an entry that you save it as a Google calendar entry and not to the phone. That way it will sync too.

Sim Checker Pro - Because if someone changes the SIM card, you can't send it a text message for other programs.
When the SIM card is changed out, it'll send me a text message (so I have the new number) and an email with the GPS location.
I also move the app from /data/app-private to /system/app as well, so it can't be deleted with a system wipe either [I just tested this.....Sim Checker is still there & it remembers my password]. Odin can obviously destroy it, but we're assuming this is stolen/found by someone who just thinks your phone is cool, not someone who knows the ins/outs of Samsung Vibrant hacking.
Another plus is if they do a wipe they'd probably lose root (forgot to verify this), which might be good as well.
From there, there are TONS of apps that will send back locations with GPS updates, Wheres My Droid is a popular example.
I would move all of these apps into the /system/app section to be on the safe side.
If I were to find a phone and decide not to give it back (hypothetically of course, don't blast me for something I haven't done), I would power it down & wipe it before doing anything...having them in your /system will help with this. I'm sure most people would probably just yank the SIM card.......either way, if you use Sim Checker, you'll be safe, but make sure you have another option like Wheres My Droid as well.
Also, I'm pretty sure if Sim Checker is in /system, it'll be able to turn the GPS on as well.
avast! Antivirus is now on android. I installed it and it offers a butt load of features!
My personal favorite feature is the anti theft mode! it will allow you to save two contacts so that you can activate it through text message from those contacts by entering in the password. It will also notify those contacts if the person changes the SIM card and it will send the new number through message (stealth mode).
Here are some of the many features you all might like...
App Disguiser
After downloading avast! Anti-Theft, user can choose a custom name that disguises the app (e.g. call it “Pinocchio game”) so that it is even harder for thieves to find and remove.
Stealth Mode
Once anti-theft is enabled, the app icon is hidden in the app tray, leaving no audio or other trace on the target phone – the app is ‘invisible’, making it difficult for thieves to detect or remove.
Self-Protection
Extremely difficult for thieves to remove (especially on rooted phones), Anti-Theft protects itself from uninstall by disguising its components with various self-preservation techniques. On rooted phones it is able to survive hard-resets and can even disable the phone’s USB port.
SIM-Card-Change Notification
If stolen and a different (unauthorized) SIM card inserted, the phone can lock, activate siren, and send you notification (to remote device) of the phone’s new number and geo-location.
Trusted SIM Cards List
Establish a ‘white list’ of approved SIM cards that can be used in the phone without triggering a theft alert. You can also easily clear the trusted SIM cards list, to leave the one present in the phone as the only trusted one.
Remote Features
SMS commands provide you the following REMOTE options for your ‘lost’ (or stolen) phone:
Siren, Lock, custom Display properties, Locate, Memory Wipe, covert Calling, Forwarding, “Lost” Notification, SMS Sending, History, Restart, and more.
This antivirus by far has the best features! Best part is that it's free!!!!!!!!!!!!
A) antivirus is not necessary on the android operating system unless you're downloading...."shifty " stuff let's say.
B) yeh antitheft is really a GREAT feature holy geez. Unless of course they simply....wipe data and flash a new rom.

Yeah, if somehow we can put some lock code on flashing of new Rom then only anti theft has a meaning otherwise the thief can easily flash a new Rom and use the phone.
It is only be useful when we have left our phone somewhere and unable to locate it.

Downloaded something from the amazon app store a month ago and it was infected, Dr. web removed it....
Also I don't believe that if you lose your phone the thief will race home, learn how to wipe the atrix quickly and download a new ROM all within minutes. If I lost my phone I would know immediately and would start the anti theft process. Not all thief's are smart and in fact, if your a thief your not smart. You can have it disable a lot of features like the USB and other stuff if stolen just by messaging the phone and it all goes undetected..
But the app is not for everyone...... I would find it useful in a tight spot and I would rather have a CHANCE then no chance.
From what I can tell in the description you can set it up so Avast survives a hard reset so that you can still track the phone and lock it

There's a whole thread on this exact subject with links to articles about market apps being removed for trojans, etc. Nothing you download over any network or from any source can be guaranteed to be safe. If you believe it is, you are very naive.
The use of anti-virus is purely optional. Some like myself value it while others do not, but to plainly say you just don't need it is just bad advice to put it simply.

A few questions, some of the features are locked and say download anti-theft root installation... cant find this anywhere. I am rooted on cm7 and ul bootloader
Also, I can not access anti-theft advanced settings for hard reset protection.
Lastly, where can I find the command list for how to track my phone and any other commands.
Thanks!!

no need for an antivirus on android. and there are plenty of antitheft apps. and besides just get a firewall. so if u DO happen to get a shifty app that wants to send data back home, usually a GOOD firewall will not allow it.
i wouldnt and dont worry about shifty apps anyways. My phone isnt used to hold anything important. i dont do business on it thats for sure lol. i dont order stuff on the net with it neither. If the website has a number to call and order I use it.
There are alot of people out there that do EVERYTHING from there phone.

Hello people,
I have been playing with some crazy idea for a while. I know that exist a lot of anti-theft apps where you can send a message to your stolen and it performs a certain task like taking a picture or start an alarm or something like that.
So I have started to think about the possibility of a more radical idea like being able to send a sms to your stolen phone that would cause some kind of irreversible damage. Something that could fry your phone internal components like a killer overclocking.
I dunno, I just thought that it would be a cool sweet revenge.
99% of the time if some steals your phone the first thing they do is throw away your sim card.
And what about sending a message through your Google Account? I think I once tried an apk that was able to send message using your gmail account.

Full wipe, and all is Ok
Better idea would be to throw a false reset option in the settings that reformats the phone to make the phone appear to have been reset but GPS, and various owner enabled services would still be on and accessible via computer manipulation.....or predefined actions.

Well there is a good anti theft app called cerberus
Just take insurance,u get brand new phone
There are already several apps available that do exactly what you suggest.
It should be easy to hard brick the phone. A little "dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/... bs=512 count=1" to all partitions on the phone should do the trick
An App with a hardcoded config in /system/app would survive a Factory Reset
I much rather would like to catch the thief who stole my phone instead of frying the phone.
My phone got stolen last month and even though I had some kind of find phone feature, I couldn't look it up. They should made something based on the IMEI# of the phone to track it instead of the sim card and account, which could easily be replaced.
Full wipe
I've had an idea for improving anti theft.
The one flaw in hardcore solutions like avast mobile and Cerberus is that they are rendered useless when a new ROM is flashed or the system partition is wiped. I know avast is supposed to have an option to be added to the backup list on CyanogenMod based ROMs, but for some reason it never works for me. Maybe because it could have been designed for CM7 and not CM9.
Anyway, the solution to the issue would be adding the anti theft program to another protected partition other than the android system. OEMs use additional partitions for the HBOOT or ODIN. An encrypted partition would make it secure. I know Ubuntu has some sort LVM encryption.
Or, restricting access to the custom recovery menu by locking it with a pass code. The issue with that might be where to store that pass code. Of course you could just reflash a stock recovery to prevent writing to the system partition, but who wants to do that?
So there's a basic description of the flaw now it just needs to be fixed somehow. I'm not good with actual coding so I'd leave that to the developers.

Install a ssh server such as dropbear, starting from init.rc
Install an IPv6 6in4 tunnel.
Now you got access to your phone via ssh and a unique IPv6 address, reachable wherever the phone is, behind NATs, firewalls, on cellular nets etc.
If it gets stolen, just access it and decide the best action ...
Just :
A new encrypted partition that can only be deleted by the user entering a password, this partition will store a pre-configured program that will detect the state of the rom, stolen-alarm, will store credentials (for accessing the main security account, data and networks) and will take actions depending on that configuration or direct access from the user(Via ssh or a custom UI).
What about that?
It doesn't need to be a large partition, just large enough to save that data.
I wouldnt want that app to get in the wrong hands.

Before anyone says it- yes I have searched. I've read the threads about root and 6.0. I know there is *currently* nothing, but some Vietnamese guy or guys are rumored to be releasing something soonish.
I'm wondering if it's possible to flash Lollipop back so I can root that. I read one thread saying I can't, but I don't know how current that was. This is a pretty big deal for me because Titanium Backup is the only way I've found to backup Google Authenticator, which I need for like 10 services (including work). I can't send the old phone back until I have Authenticator setup on the new phone, and I can't do that without root.
So...am I stuck?
If you're already on Marshmallow, you cannot flash back to Lollipop. Your only recourse is to wait until there's native Marshmallow root. It's been said about 300 times here already.
For the future, switch to Authy, it backs up all your 2-factor accounts to a password-protected cloud backup, so when you set it up on a new device, you just enter your phone number and backup password and you're good to go.

I was afraid of that Thanks.
Authy sounds convenient, but for anything requiring real security (like 2 factor auth) I don't trust anything "in the cloud", no matter how secure they say it is. But that's always the trade-off - convenience vs. security.
Thanks agian.

Well, I can know, if I turn on traffic sniffing while using the app from home. But I get your point. My concern is more that everyone is jumping on the "cloud" bandwagon without necessarily knowing how to do it right. Just because something is password protected doesn't mean it's secure. I trust Google to be secure a whole lot more than I trust a company I've only just heard of.
