I have the same issue, it is really frustrating with the new "powerful" SGS3...any solution?
Also, is it possible to change the Grid size?, I mean, with so big screen how is possible that the TouchWiz only uses 4x4

Only 2gb ram may solve this issue.

Yes mine does it too. When I have used an app for the first time some times it will take a while to go back to the home screen after pressing home. The bottom buttons will appear then a second or two later the widgets then another second or two the rest of the icons appear. Makes the phone appear to be SOOO slow. I was showing it to a friend and he just laughed and walked away with his WP7 handset saying... stupid android. HAHAHA

Same here - can not reproduce when it happens. Mostly while going back from "settings" - very annoying

That really has nothing to do with the Galaxy S III.....

My one x had this problem with sense reloadng. Custom Rom fixed it by making it persistent. Just have to wait for devs..

Sorry... I figured that since it is for the s3, but theyve had it longer... And reported fixing the redraw, that maybe it was related...

Could be, but it would have to be adapted for a totally different phone.

You need the lib that comes with it. Its nit standard in ALE.

I've seen the launcher reload I think twice now but it only happened to me when the browser crashed due to a locked up flash plugin. The launcher reloaded fast though so I sort of thought it was acceptable due to the flash crash. But yeh it's not ideal. Hopefully an update will fix whatever is causing it.

I can confirm this issue. I this its due to the RAM. The launcher takes up a lot off RAM, sometimes I only have 100mb of free RAM left and Im not playing games etc.

Ui redrawing problem in my galaxy s3 ....its taking 5 secomds or more to load......pls help asap ??.....

The fix is simple, download Xposed, then install AppSettings for xposed, when done, activate and reboot the phone. When all that done, open AppSettings and find TWLauncher.apk (i think that's the name, not sure, double check), click on it, tick Permissive, then tap save in the upper right corner, reboot the phone, benefit!
No more TW launcher redraws, xposed will keep it in memory.
Cheers

Well, there is no other way, but why don't you want to root your phone?
I mean, you will enter a whole new world and you can have a faster phone (not simply with rooting it), but with for example, installing xposed and getting touchwiz into memory, installing greenify from playstore and hibernating your apps (significantly improves battery life), installing cusotom kernel in wich you can set various settings (for speed or battery life), also, you will have a lot of custom roms to choose, wich improve the speed of your phone with their tweaks.
You don't know what you're missing
But, if you don't want to root your phone, and read all the posts on how to do it, how to install roms/kernels or modify your phone, then you can simply download Nova Launcher, which is IMO the best, fastest and most customizable launcher which uses smaller amount of memory than touchwiz, believe me, you won't see any redraws from it.
If you decide to do this, you dont have to have root, just install it from playstore
And please, use only nova, or apex, because others are just like touchwiz, full of bloat, ads, and useless stuff that'll make things slow.
Cheers

Removing TW launcher?

If I'm using GO Launcher EX do I still need the TW launcher? And can I cause any real harm by removing it?
I froze it and used it for a while and found no problems without TWLauncher.
Reason I did that was I noticed I had both running and was causing slow downs.
Ive been trying to like the GO stuff cause of the customization, and every time I switch I come back to stock for some odd reason.
Good to know. Thank you!
EDIT: Just removed it from my phone. Thanks again
It's a really really good idea to have at least two launchers. That way if something causes your launcher to crash, all you need is a shortcut (swipepad, tasker ,ect) to get to settings or an app like home launcher. It royally sucks to have to flash an old backup or an entire rom just because your launcher quick working.
All it can take to crash a launcher is a bad theme or something equally simple.

I don't mind and have noticed significant gains in battery since removing it.
If you're stock and want stock updates, you need TW. Kies sometimes won't see your phone if you use a different launcher. Not sure about this phone but noticed it on my captivate and Infuse.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
I don't use Kies and I'm getting much better battery life (about 3 additional hours) with TW launcher gone. Thanks for the warning though
Im new here but have done some experimenting with my captivate and like you I have noticed how running go and tw drags it down. I wanna either uninstall it or maybe just turn it off but I cant find the damned on/off switch. Gimme a lil guidance please????
Go to Titanium Backup and freeze it, make sure to do a backup and have the new launcher ready.
I don't have a sgsII, but I did remove the stock launcher on my LG Thrill and had juice defender screw up my phone on a reboot. When I hard reset the phone was 'light' bricked because there was no launcher.
I finally fixed it by flashing a stock rom. Take the earlier advice and FREEZE it, that way if you ever have to format you'll have it back.

i made a noob mistake by freezing tw launcher thinking i had go launcher available. i completely forgot i had uninstalled go launcher prior so i was able to get to home screen. i didnt want to wipe and restore.
good thing i had widgetlock with ICS theme slider and had swipe down to enable vlingo incar. i asked it to open titanium backup. then i was able to unfreeze the launcher. if i had just uninstalled tw launcher, i would have to do a reflash.
so it is a good advice to have a 2nd launcher available if anything does go wrong or made a mistake like me. dont remove, just freeze it.
hmm

Touchwiz redraws - Can't use Root or a custom ROM to solve

Ok probably be flamed for bringing this up... But, I have been looking for a sensible solution to my redraw problems... All these 'fixes' seem more of a placebo effect. I have been forced by Sky to use the Stock ROM but touchwiz redraws after almost everything! The phone works great on custom ROMS but I can't use them. Am I expecting to much from this phone? Or does anyone know a way I can use apps that are root protected/stock kernel on a custom ROM?
The redraw is a Samsung/Touchwiz problem. It's not a memory problem. Even when I had the North American versions with 2GB of RAM, Touchwiz still had redraw issues. It's on Samsung to sort it out.
You can always download Nova Launcher from the Play Store and use it instead of Touchwiz.
I get the redraw issue with Touchwiz & Nova launcher, quite freqently as well, anyone else?

I didn't get the wallpaper offsetting, my problem was every time I went back to home all my folders would re-draw, did my head in and made was a wee bit embarrassing when showing it off! So tried Nova Launcher, loved it, went Prime to support Dev, had re-draw in app draw a few times. I then thought it might be down to the amount of apps I had, so made groups with Nova Launcher which helped a lot!
Now I'm running AR HD 2.1.1 since yesterday and not had a re-draw once....also a quick tip I picked up change your Animations from 1x to 0 in developer settings, this may reduce the re-draw!
The only way I found that worked for me was to use the ICS OOM Priority Charger. It needs root and is for deodexed roms, but I diffed the changes and applied them to the original XXBLG8 odexed services.odex

Lag?? Now that's a surprise. Anyway, try switch off the power save mode (by pulling down the notification bar). I believe when you are in power save mode, your CPU clock is also downgraded. It should help.....Honestly it shouldnt even lag with or without power save mode. I even have weather clock full animation on, and not even a single lag. Would you happen to install a lot of stuff? (that may run in system background) or even live wall paper??

I agree with the above post...there should not be any lag at all. I have over 30 apps installed on my home screen alone with various widgets along with power saver mode enabled and I am yet to see any lag whatsoever.
for most it would be a rogue app acting busy in the background

Does this Apex Launcher with the HOX+ still have Sense 4+ enabled as well? Sorry im new to android and picking this device up the day it's released to ATT in the US this friday, very excited. Never owned or used any android device in my life and coming from iphone so this world is very new to me.
Seems like Apex Launcher basically unlocks the Sense or at least offers many ways to customize it as you wish which sounds amazing! Just like Springtomize 2 for iphone. Is this correct? You say it works well with this device and the Pro version of Apex Launcher works just as great if i decided to upgrade it after trying it out? Thank you
Hmmm well lets c. Instead of acting like a jackass & a **** & asking u to use google n such, I'll help u out with the basics if u've come from IOS (which I despise )...
1) ALL android apps (apps, games etc) extensions are .apk. To install them simply connect ur android phone via USB cable to ur PC. Now I'm assuming uve got an HOX+. Since no SD card is present, a window will pop up which is basically ur internal memory. Access it & make one folder called Download (that's what I do & I make sure that ANYTHING that is dloaded from the net on my phone goes into that one folder so that I always know where all my dloaded stuff is). The 2 main/best websites I use everyday for Android apps & games are:
http://www.ipmart-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?739-Android-OS-Zone
http://www.mobilephonetalk.com/forumdisplay.php?66-Android-Operating-System-Zone&
Register on these 2 forums. They have ALL the apps that u'll require. Yes ALL the apps Cracked too Just dload them, connect ur HOX+ to ur pc then copy the files onto the internal drive of ur HOX+. Then access the Download folder on ur HOX+ using a file manager. ASTRO File manager is the best !
2) If u don't like the HTC interface then u can install a launcher: ADW EX launcher, Launcher Pro Plus, APEX launcher are amongst the best. I used ADW when I started using android which was on my HTC Desire HD. However, that kinda became slow so I moved to Launcher Pro Plus which is perfect ! I'm still using it on my DHD which I rooted... If u root ur device then u can get rid of ALL bloatware thus making the ROM much lighter than stock. Anyway, I'm sure u get what I mean...
3) If u want a nicer clock with weather (this includes widgets) then use Beautiful Widgets. AMAZING app ! I just bought it, costs £3 I think maybe less but u get regular updates & the app is simply superb ! Worth every penny... I wud'n't suggest HD Widgets. Beautiful Widgets is just simple & light & u can dload clock & weather skins if u buy it...
4) When we do have a proper/stable way to root our HOX+ then I wud suggest flashing Android Revolution HD (ARHD by mike1986). It is IMHO the BEST custom rom out there for android phones.... I always found Cyanogen Mod to be unnecessarily complicated.... The best custom rom close to a stock rom is ARHD.... Mike1986 is a very dedicated dev & u get regular updates with his rom & lotsa other stuff as well... U'll see once u flash it...
5) What I usually do whenever I flash a custom rom is to remove the sense in that custom rom to make it lighter & MUCH faster. This is done using a No-Sense rom... Mike1986 provides ALL links to important flashable files in his thread so u needn't worry abt looking for such things....
Hmmm lets see what else ? Na I guess that's enuff of a crash course in Android I started using android in 2010 & went through MANY forums & learned a lot... XDA forums is the best forum for android device development etc... This is where I learned everything I know, not to mention my personal experiences here Hope I helped... Cheers man... p.s. to be very honest, it's more fun finding out stuff on ur own using search but it's always nice when someone lends u a helping hand...

[Q] Galaxy SIII Sluggish

Hi,
I just switched from Apple and bought my first Android Phone. I am loving the overall experience of Andriod and the power of the SIII but sometimes, it gives me a headache.
Often times, the phone becomes quite sluggish and unresponsive for a short time and then gets back to normal. This usually happens at the home screen and the phone takes a while to redraw the screens. The phone becomes very sluggish when moving from one screen to the next.
Sometimes I notice sluggishness in the contacts and in the messages.
I have tried Apex and Nova launchers too and am currently using GO Launcher. It is great and I was loving it all the way but after about 10 days of use, even GO launcher has become sluggish and during this time, I did not make changes to the phone nor added any new apps. It seems like the RAM is full with apps and little resources available to the launcher itself. I feel Andriod can do better with RAM management.
How can I speed up my phone ? Optimize my RAM / CPU resources ? Is there a solution or do I have to live with it ? I can't imagine a phone so powerful behaving this way.
Please Help ! Thanks.
I am using the I9300 with 4.1.2
Hi
The reason for this is sometimes the ram becomes full and to free it up android starts killing up processes, including the Launchers too.
The best solution would be to jack up the RAM, but that's not possible.
One way you can avoid it for 90% (if not 100%) is by using Nova Launcher.
Go to Nova Settings -> Scroll to the bottom -> Advanced -> Check on Aggressive Desktop.
What it'll do is that it'll try to keep the launcher in memory as much as possible reducing the redraws and slugginess.
It doesn't work always, but for most of the part it does.
Root your phone and install a custom kernel such as siyah. Allows you to adjust certain gpu and cpu options as well as deliver far better sound.

Yes, rooting seems to be an option but that is the different route. I would like to try out the non rooting solutions first. I even installed Start Up Auditor and Watchdog, well theoratically it seems to be working but in the real sense, not most effective.
Q&A section awaits you
Make sure "Power saving" is off
Make sure you havent accidentally activated power saving mode, it makes the phone noticeably sluggish and scrolling skip frames.
Turn off animations in developers settings or set to .05

Ok let's get it started.
Install nova or apex and enable keep in memory from their settings.
Disable ripple effect in lock screen settings.
Go in application settings - all and disable following.

Everything Samsung which has a small blue cloud as an icon, there will be 7-8 apps.
If you only use Gmail. And don't use email app, you can disable it and also exchange services.
Disable flipboard
Disable everything Yahoo.
Disable live wallpaper and use a static one.
Have only one weather widget installed at one time. I would say default weather widget is good enough.
You will gain good amount of ram.

If I have to do ALL this .... then what's the point to buying the best in the market ? There is no better method than using all these small tweaks ?
I mean a top notch phone with great hardware and software should be able to do fine just on its own (without the tweaks) ...
Anyway ,,, my animations are already set to .05. I tried Nova, but GO launcher is just much better and faster. There is nothing in the settings or an app, that can reserve more RAM for the desktop and keep the million apps from running in the background ? Even when I kill apps from Watchdog, they pop right up after a few seconds.
I was showing off my phone to a friend who owns Apple, and right there in the middle of my Demo, The curse began and my desktop took 10 seconds to load ... it was pretty embarassing.

But this is Android my friend vastly different from the generic iPhone where everything works out of the box and everything looks the same but you are highly restricted in what you can do.
With Android you can modify and change to your hearts content, my Galaxy S3 has none of the problems you have, it whizzes along with superb battery life, people have already given good advice to you, usually noobs are told to use the search function
BTW not a chance is Go Launcher better than Nova, the best launcher in the business

I see from the above that you came from Apple... you know, you have the Android phone now, most of the stuff unfortunately have something to read or to set up. This is especially important for ANY apk which was not written specifically for I9300, as there are plenty of Android devices on the market.
and, typically for plenty: My IPhone was brilliant, and now I have to suffer, my, oh my!. Let's start from beginnig: you have changed the Launcher on I9300 for something what was not specifically designed for it (it is only COMPATIBLE, I mean: was not optimized). Try to replace it on iPhone, and then claim something, please.
OK, let's try to make your Go Launcher more playable now.
While on main screen, push menu button, then open preferences.
go to advanced, here you will find two important for you options:
1. System persistent and 2. Prevent force close.
Furthermore, unless you will root phone and uninstall/disable TW, it will be always somewhere in running processes.
Finally, please tell how many widgets do you have, Live wallpaper? etc.
Last but not least: you should look on the processes running in background rather than on apps. And feel free to use Go task switcher for that, it is add-on to Go Launcher, and free as well.
just don't use any task killers to clean your RAM, Android handles it pretty well and you're only messing up the system
Usually rooting is the best option as Samsung updates might be pushed before its stable.
If not turn off power saving option. And other small tweaks

I am running a typical stock International firmware that is rooted and have managed to safely remove a good deal of the junk/bloatware but Flipboard persists in returning upon reboot. Is there something I am missing? Any advise appreciated.

Laggy S3

Noob android user here.
When I first got my s3 it was snappy and fast but after a year it has really slowed down. I have 4gb of free space and I also have tried cleaning cache.
What can I do to make it snappy again? any help would be appreciated.
I here talk about bloatware removal, What does it actually remove?
I highly recommend using Nova Launcher from the playstore. Go to developer settings and switch animations to .5, default is 1.0x.
Nova gives you more customization than touchwiz and from what I've read it uses less RAM than touchwiz. Win win.
In nova settings, also switch the transitions to fast.
Removing bloatware is self explanatory. You basically get rid of apps that you don't use that come pre installed on your device and you cannot actually uninstall.
Most custom roms are debloated. For this you need root access though.

Well I am rooted and I am using nova because I used to have homescreen redraws.

Which galaxy s 3 are you using? If you're rooted, have you tried different roms? Most roms come tweaked for better performance and debloated. Just read the OP to see what you're getting.
Check for any apps settings like Facebook, Twitter, weather, anything that may be syncing in the background.
Things like that take up RAM so when you use other apps it'll slow you down cause everything is working at once.
I highly suggest downloading Greenify from the playstore.

The Fastest and the easiest way would be to switch to a custom ROM, especially slimmed down ones. I'm personally using Neat ROM Lite and I have been more than satisfied with its performance. I'm also using googy kernel v2.0 TDI with it since I believe that gives me more battery but that is optional.
If you don't want to change your ROM. The other quick fix you can do is, get xposed framework with per app settings module from below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2072081
Make your launcher, phone and contacts app as always resident in memory. This will solve launcher redraws and slow opening of phone/contact app.
Once you done that, to kill off the lag install another app called greenify from market. This app will search for all other apps running persistently in background causing the lag. From the list of the app thus obtained, you can greenify the non-important ones i.e. it will make them exit as soon as you leave the app.
and don't ask questions in this section, please. it's against the rules
HI
bloatware removal is only done on custom ROms by developers.. you cant do it when you are on stock firmware .you can use applikations to clean out rubbish from phone.. for example clean master (free)
or remove uneccessary programs from startup - use startup manager free app from market.
i will try also restore phone to factory defaults.. dont forget to backup whats important.
hope will help.
Something about Touchwiz (wether you use the launcher or not) makes the phone slow at times. I have found that mods and roms seldom fix ALL slowdowns. They always occur from time to time.
The only real solution I've found was moving to AOSP (CM in my case). You get a couple of bugs, but the lag is completely gone. A trade off sadly. Worth trying though.
