Well i've unlocked boot loader, flashed Amon Ra and done the superuser flash as well the busy box from jrummy, but i cant seem to get soff, i've tried hasoons tool kit and the one click method by "2fast4u" off you tube link....so i have super user permissions, can freeze or un install system apps but dont have soff. and id like to have soff and an ics kernal so i'm able to flash some roms. this process w the rezound is so different than my previous phones [incredible, incredible2, and thunderbolt] id really like some guidance or some good instructions on how to achieve soff so i'm able to start flashing some ics kernals and have some rom flashing fun.
Any help is much appreciated, Thanks

Have you rooted your ROM? Not too keen on the S-off error messages but it looks like an error finding a directory because it doesn't have the root access given by superuser. Or I dunno, simply asking if you have rooted.
Do you have USB Debugging selected?
Also, make sure you run ControlBear as admin
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
Right-click the Windows .exe file to "Run as Adminstrator" by the way, as LunaticSerenade suggested. Gotta make sure you got privileges all around and communication haha.
yes to all
usb debugging is on, i assume i'm rooted because i am able to freeze system apps and titanium Bu says i am, and i am running control bear as administrator, question i do have is about adb drivers/fastboot drivers? i am installing htc sync now for the fastboot drivers then i will un install sync leaving the drivers behind. is there certain files i need in a folder to do this properly or just hook up phone w usb debugging and run control bear as administrator?
ControlBear should have everything.
If you have adb installed, use adb devices to see if it picks up your phone.
If it does, everything should be good. Make sure also you have the right version (GB or ICS).

One last question for the night. Are you connecting the phone before or after running ControlBear?
Two, actually. Did the phone show up in adb devices?
[edit] ControlBear clearly sees your device. So never mind the adb thing.
You may want to flash a stock rooted GB ROM. That will remove some variables.

this sucks
it seems i've lost root...guessing it was a temp root and when i last rebooted, well i lost root. so i've been trying to root again or even try a perm root and cant seem to do it, tried hasoons toolkit for the permanent root flash but isn't working.
i need root again somehow, then use hasoons newer toolkit for s-off, can a country white boy get some help please??? I'm really missing my wifi tethering and missing even more the open garden app, my 4g is so much faster than my dsl connection at home. hahahaha, aint that some ****
I have three Rezounds & have never been able to get s-off to work on any of them although all three are rooted & work fine with ADB etc.
I don't really care at this point as I can still accomplish whatever I want, it just takes an extra step etc. (flash boot.img after a ROM flash etc)
could you shed some light on how i can obtain a permanent root? i would appreciate it, not used to not being rooted and having su permissions...seems like 50% of my applications require root privileges, lol

If your intentions are to run a custom rom then go ahead and flash one I'd the older gb roms, flash it and then try again

Were you ever able to flash a recovery?
I couldn't get the one-click root thing to work, but I had already unlocked the bootloader using the htcdev.com method. So I used fastboot to flash Amon Ra, then booted into that and chose the "install superuser" option, which does the root.

You can't use amonra to root on ICS. You just have to install amonra and flash a Rom they are prerooted.

I tried to root it says Im rooted then Im not rooted then I cant install busybox. Superuser is installed. What do I do root again?I tried the the easy install method like I used to and always worked but I lost the file I used to use. Guess I will eventually have to learn ADB.It says s-off which I thought it meant rooted.
Rebooot into hboot, look for s-off if it says that, your rooted. If it says s-on than it isnt

It says s-off but cant do anything, cant install busybox, do anything with rom manager etc...
Too many possible solutions...brain exploding...
Roms are "rooted" so the problem is in the rom you have itself. If you have no recovery, simple suggestsions are...
-See if you are able to install an updated version of Superuser from the Android Market and fix your permission problems and let you reflash recovery.
-Flash a custom recovery via bootloader and flash whatever rooted rom you want from that custom recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179386
-Flash a pre-rooted stock PG05IMG.zip in bootloader such as the custom one in the rooting tutorial
somebody set you up the bomb?
were you able to get clockwork on at least(if it didn't get put on automatically when you s-off'd)
I couldnt get into clockwork, i renamed a stock debloat rom and tried to load in recovery it says it loaded but it didnt nothing happened.
Run step 3 again

Screw it it says s-off Im rooted but then I cant get into clockwork or busybox Im just going back to stock.
Try flashing a different rom, like gingeritis or bamf. If it doesn't load through cwm, try installing a working cwm like the above posts mentioned. And then try again. My guess is your still on a stock rom so there is no root functions available to you, or your cwm is corrupted

His main problem is that he says he doesn't have a custom recovery (clockwork) installed. So he can't flash this.
Only thing he can access and use is hboot right now so using my second or third suggestion above (which he would have to do in order to flash that zip) would definitely fix his issues. The first suggestion I gave would help in some situations so I added it first but as I said, 2nd and 3rd would work fine.
All this assumes he actually doesn't have a custom recovery but does have engineering hboot s-off. If this much isn't true, then he could just unroot and start over using the pinned guides in the dev section.

You are correct my friend, i have eng hboot s-off but I just need to follow the directions in the dev section if I really want to pursue this further. I went back to stock and when I have time or feel like trying again I will follow the guide as I re downloaded the files again.
I do have another question as Im a little slow lol. I have or am installing the sdk package now and to follow the dev root how do I get to the adb section. I just start the manager and go from a c: prompt nad use the line by line from there as if I tried using terminal from the phone it would get lost right? Sorry for the stupid question its just I used to use the auto root method that I had and it always worked then I lost the files. I also install all or everything it wants to for SDK correct?
ok on step 5 and it says device offline or error and is not working a little help please.
Ok I tried adb and I get errors , permission denied, tried several auto roots and get errors. This phone really doesnt want me to freaking root. Time to get a different phone or actually stay stock as it runs good and battery life isnt bad.
alright guys so my only rooting/rom changing/whatever experience comes from the Droid 1, which was an extreme breeze to install and get root access easily, well overall super easy to install all you needed well now I'm having trouble with the rezound as it's a little more complicated (for me) anyways here's what I need help with
I unlocked my bootloader following the super noob guide, In the super noob guide the directions say to install the ICS leak 3.11 and then install the All in one HTC rezound tool thing I did all of that and Managed to unlock my bootloader and I am not 100% sure if I instaled the custom recovery but It seems like I did, If AmonRa is the ICSandwichy looking bootloader with the blue letters, IF it is then I did install it then here comes what I need help with, I cant seem to get anything out of clicking the perm root on the extras I am running the program on administrator and also tried it without running in administrator, I tried and tried but I can't seem to get root (checked with app root access and odesn't give me it) I even tried installing it through the options of the clockworkmod thing/Adamnro by clicking on the install su & superuser? option it says it installs it but once I'm checking it doesn't work
I have however not installed any kernels nor roms im still running on the ICS leak from when I unlocked the bootloader, Help me great XDA community
any help will be appreciated
EDIT: I forgot I also run it in debug mode and when I try to get perm root I do it when the phone is on
The easiest way to install super user is through amon ra recovery,I believe it's under advanced or devoloper options.or just flash a rooted custom rom I suggest picking one that includes the boot image that gets flashed in bootloader. The newer roms are mostly set up for s-off only and don't include an easily flashable boot image.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
I had to flash these 2 files in recovery to get root working. You might need to install busy box once booted up but not 100% sure if that was needed.
I could not get root working by using the option in Amon or the tool. Flashing these 2 files was the only way I was able to get root. I was on 3.14 leak though but should be the same for 3.11
If you are still having trouble and you have a windows based system, t wouldn't hurt to give my toolkit a try. It doesnt have the super fancy GUI but it is very functionable. I designed it to help myself when i was a super noob. It goes through the whole process step by step and explains in the simplest terms possible how you should do it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571746
just a tip, make sure you have all of the htc drivers when you are doing this and then once you have finished the step telling you to install the recovery, go back into the bootloader by either doing it manually or using my program once your phone is on. (util, then roboot into bootloader) Once you are in the bootloader, see if you can get into the recovery section. If you got in successfully then you should be in a differnet menu, from there go to the development section of amon ra and then select root. Hopwfully you get success but if you did not do the following.
Go to the mounts section of amon ra and then mount the phones usb storage. It should still be plugged in so the device should show up on your computer. Go and download the latest superuser from here:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
place it in the root of the device storage thats on your computer (the root is the main directory or folder)
then unmount the storage from your phone and go to the flashing section on Amon Ra. From there select the superuser zip folder from the sd card. Flash it and if it still gives you an error i would check your steps or request more help because i cant help you beyond this point.
I hope this walkthrough has helped and good luck on obtaining root. With root you arent limited to anything. If you are feeling good after you get root i would suggest trying to get s-off. To get s-off you have to do hardware tricks not just software tricks, but s-off is much harder and more dangerous. Have fun with your new and hopefully rooted device!
wow after having this post up for a matter of seconds i have a thanks, glad i helped!
thank you very much this worked magically
thank you for your great reply but I tried the above method and it worked beautifully I still checked out and downloaded your tool it is very nice good job on it dude and I got S -off already as well wire trick was tricky as I was trying to use a copper wire and it was workin then I got my old ipod charger cable and cuted it then got mad because I thought it wasn't going to work because they were like tiny wires tied toguether but who knew first try and it worked perfectly...

Need some help!
I decided to give this a try since it sounds like it has some potential to help get users rooted from stock configurations, or after flashing an OTA or RUU, even though I have been S-OFF via JuopunutBear for a while now. I figured I would try the rooting with an insecure boot.img first since that works for S-OFF, but got an error saying I didn't have the right boot.img installed. I had just flashed the latest Sprint ICS RUU.exe from Windows and wanted to see how this tool would work in that scenario.
So since it wanted a boot.img that I didn't have, I tried the universal exploit option but that gave me an error at the Windows level. The phone rebooted into recovery and I had to pull the battery and reboot into the stock ROM, which was fine.
I have attached screenshots of the info I got when I first started the app, the error I got when I tried to root with the exploit (I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1) and a text file containing the contents of the message in the scrollable details text box.
I'm also curious what bootloader gets flashed if that option is selected.
Please advise.
Edit: Just noticed that the version went from 1.1.10 that I downloaded yesterday to 1.1.12 today so I will reload the RUU and try that version.

With S-OFF? That's strange, since the OP says that both options work with S-OFF. Also, I couldn't find any mention of htcdev unlock in either the OP or the application when it was running.
I'm not going to htcdev unlock since my bootloader is locked after JuopunutBear and I don't want to have to deal with the ***RELOCKED*** status. I guess I could try flashing a custom bootloader after running the RUU that will allow the fastboot commands, but that can only be done by S-OFF users and by the time that's done it's probably faster to go into fastboot and flash the custom recovery, then the superuser .zip or a rooted ROM from recovery.
I'm not sure where this tool fits exactly, but it sounds like it's mostly useful for people that have done the htcdev unlock but are still S-ON and want to root more easily. If that's the case, they can run this, then boot into Android and flash a custom recovery from an app like 4EXT or Flash Image GUI without having to use fastboot for either superuser or the recovery. Is that the gist of it?
BTW, my results with version 1.1.12 are attached. I got farther this time, but it failed on the temp root.

The errors seem to be causing confusion. If everything else says okay but the Universal Exploit says Failed then this means the exploit has been patched on the stock Rom you are trying to run it on.
Also only rooting via insecure boot.img requires s-off. Universal root will work with s-on if the exploit hasn't been patched.

So in other words, this tool won't work using the "universal exploit" (in quotes because I guess it's not really universal) on the official Sprint ICS build (2.89.651.2) for the Evo 3D, which is what I flashed via RUU.exe right before running it, regardless of the S-ON or S-OFF status? Would it work with an "insecure boot.img" if we are S-OFF and if so how would we set that up?
Assuming someone wanted to root the latest Sprint GB build (2.17.651.5) for the Evo 3D, what advantages does this tool provide over flashing a custom recovery and superuser .zip file from fastboot on a PC?
I'm not trying to be negative, just want to be clear on when someone on our device would benefit from using it.

Ramjet, I have tried it too and end up where you are at. I have done the HTC unlock too.
Can someone show the step by step because I hate to presume I'm doing it right.
I have the phone set and on home screen. I run the program and fails.
I reboot the fone into the boot screen (pwr/vol dn) and select fastboot (pwr press once) then the program works and then fails at the temp thingy..
Hello all, I tried searching but if I missed the thread please point me to it. I was able to unlock the bootloader using HTC Dev but I cant seem to install TWRP. Am I missing a step or something? I am running an HTC Evo 4G LTE on 3.17. I tried putting the PJ75IMG.zip in the root of the sd card but when restarted in the bootloader it read it and said main version is older. I tried using goomanager to download and install but that didnt work either. Am i doing something wrong here? Thanks in advance guys (and girls)!
fastboot flash it PJ75IMG.zip will only work if you are S-OFF
Put the .img file in the folder you are using to run the commands from.
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
OK. So fastboot is the best method. Then I can install super user correct? I dont HAVE to install a ROM if i dont want to correct? I can just run stock root? If I wanted to install a ROM would I need to be S-OFF? or could I install one while still being S-ON? It has been quite some time since I rooted a phone. Last phone was the Samsung Epic 4G. What a terrible phone. Thanks and sorry for so many questions.

I personally use fastboot to install twrp then when you want/need to update twrp you can fastboot flash again or use goomanager from the playstore.
You can install SuperSU and run stock rooted or flash a custom rom which has superuser added
As for flashing roms you can flash them while s-on it's just more work because you have to fastboot flash the kernel/boot.img then flash the rom.
I always recommend S-OFF as it will save you the extra steps in flahing roms and also if you mess something up you can flash an older RUU if the most current RUU is not available.
@FinZ28 has a great guide explaining how to flash the kernel/boot.img
OK, so now the question becomes what method for S-OFF should I use? I would like to be able to make it look like I never rooted the phone if need be if at all possible. I successfully installed Busybox on 3.17 last night. As far as having to be S-off to flash CM, no, you don't have to be, but it makes life easier. Hit the top link in my sig and read my Hboot guide if you haven't already done so.

Are you running just the stock rooted factory rom?
You could try Captain_Throwbacks 3.17 rooted rom or SharkieRom 3.17
Try this. Its a TWRP flashable zip of the latest Busybox (v1.20.2). See if that straightens things out with your issue. Make sure you have a backup handy just in case.

You can use a file manager like Root Explorer and go to /system/xbin/ and look to make sure you see the Busybox file. If it's there you're good to go:thumbup: (I did not develop the Busybox file-I simply took the file and make it into a flashable zip. Big thanks to Rootlinux for showing me how it's done).

WTF: What are you doing?
Idk what I am doing wrong here. I couldnt even get it to work right using windows so I had to break out the laptop.
It gets to that point every time then fails and reboots the phone.
Software version: 3.17.651.4
Android Version: 4.1.1
Kernal Version: 3.4.10-gf5d846c
Is there anything else needed to help figure this out? Tis getting a wee bit frustrating. Can I S-OFF off if i flash cyanogen or any other rom?
Tried running Captain_Throwbacks stock rooted 3.17 and got the same result at the same exact point while running rumrunner. Going to try Sharkie next. Any tips are greatly welcomed!
Don't have much to offer since I haven't used Rumrunner. Having said that, make sure you're using a USB 2.0 port and not 3.0, and that you're using a fairly stock Sense ROM. Also make sure that you're phone is recognized with both ADB & Fastboot. Seems most of the issues I've seen have to do with the connection. If it fails, try try again. You also might want to check out the Rumrunner thread in original development.
Just a thought, but have you looked at your bootloader and made sure that you're still S-on? Reason I ask is because on Moonshine the "WTF: What are you doing?" message actually meant that the process was successful. Not sure if Rumrunner is the same.

Rumrunner download the exploit. Follow directions and get soff. Then flash a custom recovery and the newest zip of su from the su website by chain fire and you will have root.
Exploit. Rumrunner.us
Download the specific one for the DNA.

The Rumrunner seem not work for my HTC, it's like stop at ADB 1/120 after reboot just go on home screen and that it!
I have this same issue should I post a new thread? However it stops on the second phone rebooting into the thing it does and 20 lines of dots.
Any solutions yet?
Even factory resetted both from the phone and from inside the boot menu. Backed up the phone prior and it deleted everything to no avail..
I don't know if OP did the 2/7 superCID to HTCDEV but I did to no avail. But that was before the factory reset. I guess I could try again, what a pain to have to keep doing this..
Any other step by step troubleshooting will be appreciated.
Experience in rooting with superoneclick and htcdev with the moto droid OG and the Thunderbolt.
Here is my reasoning so far:
Want to root DNA.
So probably need to S-OFF. Probably can't ust flash an img from the recovery menu.
SuperCID HTCDEV not working.
Moonshine not working
Rumrunner stopping at second fastboot.
edit!! solution!!!! adb push temproot and firewater! DONATE TO BEAUPS!!!! W00T!!!!
Then weaksauce.apk and then SU from Play store.
Problem: installed recovery ok but ROM won't load.
Horrible problem. Installed a Recovery, and a ROM (or so I thought) but put the ROM on the root dir. And now the recovery can't see it. So I can't reinstall.
For those who don't know the DNA does not have a removable SD slot. I'm f'd.. Need help.
Tried to use adb shell but it says device not there, but before I was able to push files to it via adb.. sucks.
Really need help.. desperately. Need this phone late today for work.
Okay got it to load with a program that found and loaded the right driver.
But now still need a good file ROM I think, that has update.zip in it's package to sideload
May have successfully sideloaded a full ROM. Used a stable Cyanogenmod 10.2 just to be safe.
At least it's spinning. Yeesh.
Didn't Factory reset/wipe user data last time. Did it and it worked. Fast first load too. Hope I don't have to reload all my data. It was a pain choosing what I wanted. Lessons learned.
Install ROM into not the root. But into a folder so I can choose it. Back it up. This is a huge process.
Hope this helps someone..
