Its a feature that the mobile carrier supports or do not support. If your carrier supports fast dormancy have it enabled on the phone to get better battery life if the carrier doesnt support it, disable it to get better battery life
Does anyone know how to disable Fast Dormancy on the S3? My carrier does not support it.

I'm puzzled by the behavior of the data connection on my phone (network is 3 UK)
When the connection is busy, it goes to H+ as expected, and when idle it reverts to H. So I am assuming that "Fast Dormancy" is working.
But from my understanding of fast dormancy, I was expecting it to revert all the way down to 3G instead of H.
Very occasionally, when idle it goes down to 3G momentarily then right back up to H where it stays as long as it remains idle.
Can anyone explain this to me ?

Here's a short description of FD:

FD keeps the HSPA connection on standby which is an addon to 3G. So if it were to revert to 3G it would loose it's open high-speed data connection, timeslot allocations, ...

That usually means your phone was transferred to another cell or antenna on the same cell. It will then have to re-negotiate the low-level stuff.
Just to stress it out to anyone wandering by: Keep Fastdormancy ENABLED UNDER ALL CONDITIONS unless your provider does not support it or you actually know what you are doing.
Disabling fastdormancy forces you to fall back to 2G whenever you don't need the speed since it will otherwise drain your battery very quickly.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the details d4fseeker.
I had read an explanation of fast dormancy, but didn't fully appreciate the implication of some of the fine details.

I have the international version which defaults to "enabled." I was curious what the AT&T network engineers set their version at as I am on AT&T's.
This works on the international version and hopefully it does on AT&Ts
1: Dial *#9900#
You will have the option on the screen to enable/disable the setting.
There is much debate on the international forum on the impact of this setting to data speeds/battery life on different carriers.
Thanks in advance!

Yup, seems disabled by default. I believe AT&T's network doesn't support FD.
from what I understand that the Apple's IOS 4.2 has built in FD that prolong the life of the battery on AT&T's network.

To avoid this, AT&T researchers (again in collaboration with the University of Michigan colleagues) are proposing Tail Optimization Protocol (TOP), which implements fast dormancy using a simple interface that coordinates among currently running apps before demoting the device.

It seems like changing it in that menu does nothing - however, whether it is enabled or disabled by default may matter. Hellraised I9100 firmwares seem to almost always provide better battery performance with the UCKH7 modem than I777 firmwares, and FD might be part of the reason why.
UCKK6 modem had power consumption issues for me. Drain at my desk (weak signal) was higher for the UCKK6 modem than UCKH7 running on a device with a permanent wakelock held! (A bit under 1%/hour for UCKH7 normal operation, around 1.2%/hour for UCKH7 modem + wakelock and for UCKK6 + no wakelock) All of these are on XWKL1 system base running recent Daily Driver kernel releases.

Since this was really never answered, I too am wondering if fast dormancy should be enabled or disabled. When asking in regards to shishir's rom if fast dormancy was enabled he said, "Yes it is! And it's supported as long as you're on AT&T." However, LiLRom's 1.3.1 changelog states "Fixed Fast Dormancy build.prop since AT&T doesn't use this."
Now I've googled and haven't found any concrete answers as to whether AT&T even supports FD...

It's better to resurrect an old thread that already discusses this topic than it is to create a whole new one. XDA rule #1: "search before posting". If a thread already exists that deals with what you want, DO NOT create a new one.
And to the recent poster:
I'm not sure anyone has done "scientific" testing to see whether or not "fast dormancy" helps. Based on the available generic GSM literature on the matter, it would seem like a good idea. Faster data call spin-ups, and less battery use. However, AT&T notoriously doesn't follow the GSM spec fully, and often times picks and chooses what to deploy on their network.
I suppose the best way to test is to run a whole bunch of speed tests with and without FD turned on. And to live a week with it on, then a week with it off, and compare average battery life. And if you can get another 15-20 people to do the same, then we do some statistical analysis on the results, you might actually find out whether to enable it or not.
Short of that, the rest is heresay and wildly subjective opinions. Any given individual's usage patterns may vary so wildly, that without looking on aggregate (and with correct analysis), it's almost impossible to tell whether or not specific "insert-preference-here" actually has a positive effect or not. It is worth mentioning that fast dormancy does appear to be disabled by default on AT&T based ROMs for the GS2. Of course, such a setting might have been over-looked, or possibly even disabled despite potentially helping performance/battery on our phones. Who knows. Unless you have a friend who works as a network engineer at AT&T, we might ultimately never get an answer on this... :-/

According to the notification bar you have bluetooth enabled and the app reports that your Wifi is running a lot [*]. Both drain the battery, especially since a lot of apps will use the open data connection to update, pull and push data.
If you're keeping 3G on, you might want to check if IDLE is supported (so-called fast dormancy) since non-idle HSPA connections drain the battery very quickly.
My guess is that people with extremely low loss-% drop back to 2G or disable data networking altogether when not using it.
(I prefer dropping to 2G since apps can still receive updates)
Additionally it also depends on the background apps (of course) and your network strength. If you're on 1-2 bars (or even dropping out sometimes) it needs more power than an excellent connection.
[*] Wifi also requires a lot of power to scan for nearby networks if you're not currently connected to a network.

I'm currently at 77% with very light usage. I've sent maybe 20 text messages and spent maybe 10 minutes in various apps. My on screen time is currently 29 minutes. I have email set to sync every 4 hours, weather syncs every three hours, I created the MeanRom.opt file and set parameters for battery. Is there anything I can do to increase my battery life as I hear about others getting at least a full day out of their battery.

I get 30+ hours with almost 4 hours of screen on try turning off auto sync and whatever else is not neccesary such as GPS and IMHO changing to battery I tried it once and got horrible battery life you can also check Better Battery Stats and see if some rouge programs are running I know GN is a big battery killer also I always heard having wifi on as much as possible was supposed to save battery but.. I had mine on and it kicked the crap out of my battery I saw in BBS that wifi had almost 6000 wakelocks so I turned it off until I needed it then back off when done no more battery problems.
It's not uncommon to have mediocre battery life immediately after flashing a ROM...give it a day or two to settle and it should improve. That's typically been the case for me.

Yeah, that would help...wifi uses less battery than 3g too, so use that whenever you can. Just make sure the "Best WiFi Performance" option is disabled in wifi settings (it drains battery pretty aggressively).
You really shouldn't have to disable your data connection to get decent battery life though. Have you let the battery run all the way down? How many hours do you get on a full charge? Do you have the same problem with other roms?

But isn't setting it to 2 during night is the same as turning wifi off and use cellular data instead?
So does it mean that cellular data is better in terms of battery?
And why 3 is better for overall use?
Lets assume that cellular data is free of charge for this matter, and my only concern is battery.

Sure and while you`re at it disable 3 cores permanently, lower brightness to 0 and don`t ever use your phone for better batterytime, 2G will consume more power as it is slower and so it takes longer to retreive data.

Just looked in my own settings and i have option 3 checked: wifi on Always. It also depends on the user, do you use wifi a lot or just once in a while. The best thing to do is try a few settings for yourself and see which setings consumes the least amount of battery.
Settings WiFi on always .
WiFi / mobile data not in use or not required = turned off via toggles .
jje
But I do want data during the night - for example for whatsapp, emails and so on. So turning both off is not an option for me.
- On one hand, people here say to set wifi, but "never" during sleep. But that means to use only 3g during the night, doesn't it? Or I'm missing something here?
- On the other hand, 3G costs more than wifi in terms of battery.
So I don't understand how these two go together.
I have set to "Always" so the device have not to reconnect when unlocking screen, what drains battery imho.
But in the night I set flight mode on cause I want and need to sleep and don't need new SMS or Whatsapp or calls

Can someone clarify this for me please?
3g doesn't cost more in terms of battery so long as you have a very good signal. If you don't or if for some reason the network has a problem then it will drain the battery.
What I recently started using is a program called ds battery saver which toggles wifi or 3g periodically depending on what you set it up for so that you do get night time data but not on all the time. That helps with battery
Wifi is active the whole time my device is draining about a third of my battery. I have wifi pop ups off, always allow scanning off, wifi notifications off, and smart network switch off as well. I have no idea what is causing wifi to drain so much battery but if I could fix it the battery life would be amazing.
Does anyone have any clue how to fix it and or is anyone having similar issues?

Wifi battery drain - only on "enterprise" network, not home wifi
Wifi drain is ONLY on my Enterprise network, no drain on home wifi. The major difference is PEAP vs WPA for security.
Wifi enabled at my work (Cisco infrastructure)
EAP method EAP
The "downlink" arrow is ON continuously, and the battery drains to dead in less than 9 hours. Turn wifi OFF and use 4G (or be on home wifi) and battery is good for nearly 20 hours.
I'd be curious to know if those experiencing the wifi battery drain are noticing anything similar.
