One X Car Dock & E4GLTE - may be compatible with mod - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

See my thread on AC here. Sorry for the cross post.
One X Car Dock & E4GLTE - May fit with modification

Umm correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the one X have 4 metal contacts on the body of the phone for the car dock, where the Evo uses the MHL adapter instead?
Yeah look at the 17-18 second part in this video. http://youtu.be/pFCs-HwtgKo?t=17s You clearly see the 4 connector points for the dock.

Are you sure those for the car dock? I don't see any corresponding contacts in the cradle. Granted, i don't have any of these devices in front of me, just the YouTube video, so I'm guessing as much as anyone else is. I would think that the OP would have noticed the extra pins in the One X cradle and made mention of them. Also, if the One X uses these 4 connectors for the dock (presumably for power and to trigger the car mode, but not likely data), why would it have the micro USB plug built into it as well?
I hope this works, since I also do not like the clunky Sprint dock.
--update--
Take a look at the OP's thread over at AC. His picture of the One X dock do not show these extra 4 connectors on the dock. Just a space for the USB plug to be attached. There is hope.

The pogo pin car dock for the one x is not available yet, but yes, that dock obviously would not work with our Evo. The dock in the video actually has the usb connection too.
This dock uses the usb connector (which lines up nicely with the connection on our E4GLTE). The usb cable that comes with the dock has a clip on connection to semi-permanently attach it to the dock.

I also posted in your thread over at AC...
but why not try using a heat gun to soften up the plastic on the dock to fit the EVO?

Thats the same i want!
But i want it to turn it 90 degrees CW. So i can use it for navigation (looks better then portrait).
but i can't find any holder so far...

I'll try and take a picture later to show you it "sitting" in my old Kaiser mount. If I modified the charger block to not be attached, I'm sure it would fulfil the requirements.
Works landscape and portrait too!

Cool, look forward to seeing it, need a holder asap
Here you go.
3 pictures:
1 showing my old kaiser in the mount, to prove it is indeed a kaiser mount, USB plugged in
1 showing the TP2 in portrait mode, sitting on top of the USB plug
1 showing the TP2 in landscape mode.
It should be noted that there is a bit of wiggle when in landscape mode. This is because the TP2 isn't as thick as the kaiser.
If you could find some way of attaching the USB plug where it should be, then that would help hold it in place.
Also, it's rather embarrasing that my company-supplied, POS, makes-everyone-sound-like-a-dalek Nokia 6300 takes better pictures than my TP2 can
not the best looking but it does the job..............
the cheapest and the most must have if you got a car.

Would the actual car holders have a power cable that connects to a 12V connection? Or would it be likely to have a mini USB to USB there?
What I want to do is to connect my TP2 directly to my Asus R2H while I'm in the car. That saves me another bluetooth connection for syncing.
Take a look at this picture:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-LTLWPB8F.jpg
Or the last few pictures from this album:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Album=ZYX7DZAT
The TP2 would then be mounted just below the R2H.

Brodit do passive and active mounts, if you get the passive one you can connect your own mini-USB to USB cable to connect to your Asus. (The active ones have either a cigar lighter plug or a two wire connection for direct wiring into the vehicle)
Gordon
Yes, I saw that. Only downside of a passive holder is that I have to plug the USB cable in every time. But hey: that's what I'm doing now as well
Let's go for the passive one! It's cheaper anyway!
Now i wait for this Brodit.

I suppose we should not charge the battery in the car anyway, so I avoy it!
That's why I don't consider the active holder... I use a passive and have a car charger just in case of need (very unusual)!
I'm still waiting for my passive holder

Because LiPolymer-Batterys don't like to be charged when they are warm. In a car it can easily be 80+ [°C] and there is the direkt sun onto the phone.
My Brodit Active holder arrived today and I am pleased with it, however I am a bit concerned that when the phone is slid onto the holder the thin guides that slide up between the phone and the keyboard seem to force the two apart more than I think they should be.
Hmmm, I will have to wait and see it it results in a sloppy hinge.
elab
I already have a passive brodit holder with the same "problem"... I already fear for the same thin.... getting it damaged... what do you think?
Could you guys please post some pictures here? I still need to order the holder and your pictures will probably be more clear than the nice marketing pictures from Brodit
here are some pictures of the passive holder:

Micro USB permanent car charger

I am looking for a permanent car charger cable to install into my car.
It needs to be a 15' to 20' long with a straight cord for a hidden cable run.
I would like to hook it up to the cars wiring under the dash, run it under the windshield pillar trim to between the headliner and roof then drop out above the rear view mirror. I would then plug it into my car dock this just makes a cleaner look.
I have searched around the net but no luck yet.
Any help would be appreciated.
I haven't seen that, but what you may need to do this this. I did something like it a few years ago with a radar detector
get this or something like it
http://cgi.ebay.com/Belkin-Mini-Uni...Accessories&hash=item3a66d9f61b#ht_643wt_1396
and then a usb cord for the length you want, and attach the power and ground to the cig lighter adapter you can take it apart if you need just make sure you get the + and - right and leave the fuse in there. then tape it up nice with electrical tape and wire it in to the fuse panel to turn on with the ignition. its really not as getto as it sounds.
i just use that adapter and plug it in my back seat lighter and run the cord up by the front seat
I Would just use a cigarette lighter adapter: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...082602&p_id=6765&seq=1&format=3#specification
hidden under the dash, and then plug in one of these:http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5138&seq=1&format=2
Everything you need to put a 12v cigarette lighter socket under the dash is available at an auto-parts store for <$10.
Why don't you just connect to the wiring that is connecting to the cigarette lighter adapter?
That way it would be 5V, and then you can connect that to a project box, and install a fuse in there, and then put the wiring from that to the usb cable.
I did this about 10 years ago, when I directly connected the radar detector, and lights under the seats controlled by buttons. Was fairly easy to do, depending on how much room you have to work with connecting the wiring.

buy a 12v socket too, get something like this, should be cheap on ebay, then just snip off the male end and stripe the cable so you can tap your car's 12v socket wiring

Just as an FYI, as I see what you are going to do and it is a far better alternative.
A 10'+ cable will not give you full charging voltage at the end of that run. The cable is too long for the small amount of voltage running through it. While it WILL still charge, it will be at a fairly slower rate.
There is a thread in the EVO forums where I was asking cause it was something I noticed and someone who seemed to know what they were talking about when it came to electricity, replied.
I would link it, but been up all night and am getting tired.

as far as I know USB cable can go up to 5m or about 16ft, this length has more to do with data transmission signal quality issue, for straight charging there's no signal at all, so shouldn't be a problem. When you get a chance please post your link, so i can study this some more

Have you checked with 12 Volt Designs, they offer a couple of options that may work for you.
I would post a link, but I am still new to this forum

[REQUEST] Car Dock AUDIO without dock.

Alright, yes I know how to use the search function and I can launch the Car Dock application itself just fine with the previously mentioned shortcut, however I need to switch the mode itself apparently (i.e. with the steering wheel icon onscreen).
I own a Car Dock but I want to be able to use the included cable that supports both charging and audio output in one cord. THAT only works in Dock Mode (in fact it doesnt even charge when plugged directly in, let alone route the audio to the 3.5mm jack.
I have to say that so far the thought put into the Motorola accessories like this dock blow away the HTC options and this Micro-USB to combo USB/3.5mm is exactly what I need but sometimes I just want to be able to only plug in ONE cord.
Any thoughts?
Im not sure what you are asking -- I disabled the Car Dock application by telling Tasker to open by default when plugged in.. I get MEDIA audio through the audio plug from the car dock.
Like I said, along with the car dock there is a combo cord, Micro USB to plug into the phone and USB on the other end for power as well as a female headphone jack. This cord usually plugs into the back of the dock which just extends it to the Micro-USB plug in the cradle that you set the phone into. I want to use the cord only, plugged directly into the phone.
Unfortunately the phone only routes audio out through the Micro-USB port when its in car dock mode, this is separate from the car dock app running and is denoted by the steering wheel icon in the top bar of the screen. Its switched into this mode by the previously mentioned magnets in the car dock, I need a way to switch it on some other way.
The cord is convenient because you only have to plug ONE thing in and you have both power and audio. Make sense?

Believe me, convenience makes sense to me.. I took the HD dock, and modified it so that it could be mounted to a ProClip swivel mount.. Part of that involved opening up the actual dock.. There is an IC inside the dock mount, if I recall - and I suspect that may be doing some playing around with the USB/audio split function. I did not see any magnets in there. The phone knows the difference between the HD Dock and the Car Dock - so I suspect the IC is giving it some of its info to determine that. I am not sure if magnets are being used this time around.
Does anyone know if the remote that comes with the web-dock combo will work while the phone is in the car dock? It would be a great feature and a lot safer to change songs while you are driving.
When I first got my Photon I had a problem getting the phone to seat properly in the dock using the Sprint case with holster. The case was hitting the raised area around the connectors because the hole in the case wasn't big enough, so I took a small file and carefully enlarged the hole so it could seat properly. I said all of that to say this; The phone appeared to be seated enough to be docked but was off just enough to not get a good connection. If there was anything magnet related it would have been in the dock enough to have been activated. There is definitely something in the dock that is being monitored to put it in Car Mode. If I get a chance today I'll do some testing to try and determine what is going on.

Been offline while doing some other things or I'd have replied earlier but yeah, the magnet idea was just a guess based on other reports here, I've not had a chance to disassemble mine to see whats goin' on in there.
I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the fit and finish on the dock as it relates to the way the integrated connector mates with the phone, it has an odd angle on it and even then doesnt seat all the way. Thats both with and without my slim case, both with and without the included. I dont have the bulky chrome Dell-looking Sprint case but its SUPPOSED to accept that one if you remove the spacer insert in the dock.

usb cable for car

i am going to put my evo 3d in a brodit holder unfortunately brodit haven't released a charger version so I'm stuck with using the htc charger I have already got
The problem is that the port is on the side, so the cable sticks out a fair bit before I can bend it , has anyone any idea if I can get a usb cable which bends if you know what I mean so it will sit flush with the phone as I dont want to damage the usb connector
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
Yes, there are 90 degree microUSB cables which stick out way less and can be easier to handle in tight spaces, look at this thread and take note of the cables I mentioned there... I actually later bought a longer one for my car (3') with the opposite orientation as I show in that post so that the cable approaches the phone from the top rather than the bottom, making it easier to put down and pickup on my center console or cup holders. You might want it one way or the other depending on your car's layout and where the charger port is.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218703
Phones with side ports should come with 90 degree cables by default imo, they're more convenient in general, and surely safer for your port.
Awsome just ordered one off Amazon UK hopefully will work well with my htc plug in bit thanks

30pin "L" shaped connector?

I will be using my GT 7.7 allot in the car and likely in the landscape orientation. This puts the 30pin connector and cable sticking straight out the side.
Is there any 90 degree ("L" shaped) 30pin connectors available? (similar to a "L" shaped SATA connectors -see picture-)
If there is, this would point the cable towards the dashboard and and make the cable routing less messy looking.
I searched but didn't come up with anything.
Note: I know I could use the Samsung OEM car dock (which, I think, has the power cable connector in the back/bottom) but was looking for a lower cost option.
Thank
Any luck with finding one of these cables?

Have you had a look at my cheap solution for car a car dock and cable management yet?
I know this was posted awhile ago, but if you or anyone else is interested, the original samsung galaxy tab HDMI dock uses the same connector and works w/ the 7.7 (I know because i have a couple). You can get these on amazon for $15 right now. I believe this is the same dock for all the tabs and they just change the plastic piece that holds your tablet to accomodate the model (i have the original galaxy tab, the 7 Plus, and the 7.7 and they ALL work).
If you take it apart, the tablet connector looks exactly like what you are looking for - an L shaped 30-pin. The profile when plugged in is very thin and looks less like when you have the actual car charger cable plugged directly into the tablet.
I've attached a picture of what the cable end looks like. The nice thing is if you keep all the electronics intact, there is an area in the back that the car charger cable connects to pass power to this cable as well as a 3.5 jack for your auxiliary audio connector. Once you lop off the plastic tablet holder part, you have a bare ribbon cable that you can cover in black electrical tape and you just have to mount the pod onto the back of a hard tablet mount and plug your power and auxiliary audio cable into it.
Dear rEVOLVE
i liked your idea the most and i already ordered the dock, but i have a question, my ordered dock has HDMI output as well, so can i do some electronic modification Like this DIY USB OTG cable to connect USB hub to it in the same time as well, so finally i got i charging 30pin port, auxiliary 3.5 audio port, HDMI port, and USB port???
thank you
