[Q] HW Accellerated Video on Froyo or Gingerbread? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'll keep this simple, guys:
I was running Vegan-Gingerbread and everything just kind of worked. Unfortunately 720p video, even running overclocked, was just a stuttering mess.
Because it was all software decoding on Gingerbread...I think.
So I went through all the hoops and installed (finally, after bricking the thing a few times) BEASTCLEMSONFROYOWHATEVER super ultra overclocked speedy rom...Froyo based. Tried a few 720p files. One said HW DECODING...but produced no picture OR sound. Switching to software displayed choppy video and sound, unwatchable, of a 720p file.
I tried a few more video players. Some wont use hardware at all, so the results are awful. only that one app (Mplayer? Vitalpoalyer?) used HW but then it produced no results at all.
So here it is:
Is there any player that run on either Vegan Tab 5.1 beta (Froyo bl 1.1) or this Beast/Clemson rom I am on now (Froyo bl 1.2) that will use HW decoding of 720p and play at full speed?
If the answer is no I'll go back to Gingerbread and handbrake my files to 1024 x something...and see if the gtab can software-decode that. If not, then I'll drop down to DVD rez...720x480, which we all know the gtab can do.....
Thank you very much

I would say if you don't mind the non-functional camera and mic then I would take the leap to the ICS roms that are in the Dev. forum. Both have great HD playback and both have HW decoding because they share the same kernel made by the Team DRH. I am currently running the AOSP G-Harmony Rom without any issues. Just have to turn off GPS apon initial bootup so that the sound stays on .

Does ICS actually run anything on the GTAB?? EG: Netflix and Winamp/Pandora and such....? I thought it was just a barely-functional OS on GTAB......I must be out of the loop...

Video Issue with Vegan GE RC1?

I have install the lastest version tonight and I loaded a few videos and none are playing anyone having this issue??? I tried the standard Videos Program and also doubletwist and mVideoplayer? Any suggestions???
All Gingerbread based ROMs are going to have some issues with video playback because there are no hardware drivers for the Tegra 2 chipset that the GTablet is based off (Harmony dev board).
So you will get software decoding only, hardware accelerations isn't going to be there.
All my videos work but when im in the web browser using flash 10.2 fixed it plays the video in slight fast forward no sound on hulu
If you haven't already done so you need to post your issue in the ROM's thread so GoJimi will be aware of the issue if he doesn't already know about it.

i would but i can't post in the developers section
Aside from the hardware acceleration issue, have you tried Rock Player, or Vplayer, I've had much success with those two.
I have actually had a random audio issue since day one so I'm RMA's mine and I flashed it back to stock now got super irritated last night with the Audio issue and then not being able to play any videos that were playing in Vegan 5.1.1! Wanted to love the tablet but I seem to be at my wits end with it! We'll see what happens!
The only videos I can get working are MP4 videos that were converterd for my Iphone.
I tried xvid, wmv, mkv, and avi. None of these will play on any of my video players(Act 1,mVideo,RockPlayer,VitalPlayer). This is the first android tablet I ever modded(VegAn-Ginger edition). Maybe I'm missing something.
Until full hardware acceleration exists, your best best is a Froyo mod like VEGAN-Tab or Brilliant Corners.
However, even those mods may disappoint you. Remember, it's not container support thats the problem (AVI / MKV / MP4 are containers), it's audio / video codec support. People confuse the two, but it's why some MKV's play and other don't, or why some have audio and some don't.
Honeycomb is even worse - my Xoom couldn't even play back WMV's that my GTAB could. But in Android's defense, it's not like the iPad is a heck of a lot better - it's OOTB support is pitiful. Granted, there are a lot of third party players, but some of them aren't free.

[Q] Youtube HD (720p & 1080p) video stutter even on froyo

My first post on forum, my first tablet and first android device in general =)
First of all, thank you guys for all that great job.
Now the question:
I flashed my G-Tablet with vegan-tab 5.1.1 + supplement update + pershoot's OC Kernel 1.4 (set it with setCPU)
Tried to test HD video on youtube (720 & 1080) but it is laggy as hell (image stutter, audio/video asynchron.), tried stock browser and dolphin HD. 480p plays fine.
I know that froyo ROMs shouldn't have problems with hardware decoding or flash video is another story and all that is normal for g-tablet?
Thanks for quick reply
I don't think hardware acceleration will help with flash content. But I could be wrong.
thank you
anyone else?
I've been wondering about this myself. Is there a native YouTube app that has an option for HD playback? I know there are froyo/gingerbread "YouTube HD" apks floating around from a few of the EVO roms.
It seems ridiculous that a Tegra 2 chip wouldn't be able to handle downscaling 720p to our 1024x600 screen.
I have gtabcomb 3.3 on 1.1 and I have the same problem
Is there an hc from that work?

[Q] What's the most stable Froyo ROM?

I currently have 'VEGAn-TAB ROM BETA 5.1 FINAL' installed as of yesterday and it's already crashed while I was watching a video. I know Gingerbread doesn't have video acceleration so I would like to avoid that if possible.
They're all pretty darn stable. And they're all listed at my site.

It may not be the rom that caused this...what video player was being used? what file format was the video in? when did you select if you were given the option of hard coding or soft coding? Where there are plethora of apps running in the background? What exactly was the "crash, forced reboot, lock up, video/audio distortion? Did the video file play properly on another device, ie your computer?
There are many players out there, some work well, some work kinda "eh." Some can't handle some video formats, some can play them, but not properly. Some vieo formats require decoding, hard or soft (I like hard when speaking of ice cream, but software decoding ususally works for my videos).
I'm using BC (the 1.2 version of VEGAn 5.1.1), and rockplayer to play video. I've been thinking of trying moboplayer, since it seems to have received rave reviews on this and other forums. I've been able to play .avi files with software decoding. MP4 files play fine, but the quality isn't as good..they're made for mobile devices with really tiny screens.
When I rip or download a movie, I almost ALWAYS make sure that it runs fine on my Acer netbook (same screen size) to get a general idea of what I can expect on the G-Tab.
in a nutshell, your issue may not be the rom at all...VEGAn 5.1.1 is probably one of, if not THEE most stable 1.1 based rom out there.

[Resolved][Q]About that little thing called hardware video acceleration.

I understand due to the lack of driver source code that Hardware acceleration will not work on our tabs past 2.2(froyo). But I am currently running Calkulin+Clemsyn 1.5ghz Froyo Combo VERSION 6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1024120 and I have tried at least 20 diff videos and diff formats using hardware codec and not one video played. I know you can use apps to play videos with software codecs but when you start going into 720p and 1080p videos the video slows way down. So is there something I'm missing? I thought the tegra 2 could handle 1080p decoding? If there is another ROM that can do HD decoding better please let me know cause video playback is what I use my tab the most for. Thanks for any help and sorry for the wall of txt lol.
Will punch the thanks button!!!
Edit: Ok after several trial and error's on trying pershoot's kernel I decided to go ahead and re-encode my videos using Freemake video converter. It works and the quality actually looks better! This program is free and it has Android presets for our tablets so that you get the best video quality at our resolution! Now I would still like to use pershoot's kernal but I can't find any froyo roms that has his/her's kernel already packed into the rom. If some one could please help me with finding one that would be super! Thanks soooo much!!!

Hmmm....well I guess I'm gonna have to choose between video acceleration or a stable ROM? :/ lol is there a custom rom with hardware acceleration? Thanks so much for the answer
I used Calkulin's ROM along with whatever current kernel Pershoot had and I never had any issues with and HD videos. You might want to give one of Pershoot's kernels a shot.

Why not re-encode to a lower resolution? The GTab can't even play 720p without resizing, which is what's killing you.
1024x600 - that's the screen size. Re-encode your HD video to be under that. It will play like butter. And be considerably smaller.

Why would they say you can play up to 1080p video, if you really cant? lol Also does it matter if its 600x1024 or 1024x600? The reason I ask is because I see it different all the time lol And one more thing, What program would you suggest to re-encode? Thanks so much for everything!
Edit: Ok so I tried pershoot's newest kernel out and I love it! I get some video acceleration back and it also fixed some sound issues I was having. The only problem is that after I install the kernel it boot's up fine but if I reboot, it gets stuck in a boot loop. If I do a factory reset it will boot back up again. but if I reboot then it gets stuck in a boot loop again. So with that said I don't think this kernel is meant for this ROM. What is the best froyo ROM that includes pershoot's kernel? Thanks for everything!!!!

[Q] Daily driver with solid VLC and Skype support?

Right now I have my GTab running Cyanogen 7, which is a solid daily driver. However, it locks up when I try to set the internal memory as the primary device. More importantly, the VLC I have running is quite studdery on high quality movies and refuses to play some formats.
Most importantly to the rom I want running is Skype support. Video in and out, sound as well. I see a very limited number of Froyo roms with a Skype fix. Has this been brought to any other versions of android? Obviously I would prefer ICS with VLC and Skype, but I see the roms out do not support the camera.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you will want to go with a Froyo rom for now to get what you want. I am sure they will get the camera working for ICS soon, but right now it's not working and who knows if Skype will work when it does. I like CM7 for it's stability but no HW acceleration means no HD video and poor gaming.
Since you are running CM7 are you on 1.1 or 1.2 bootloader? There is a new version of CM7 for the Gtablet, but I don't know if Skype works or not. My favorite Froyo rom for 1.2 is Beasty, very fast and stable. You can use any Froyo rom that doesn't include the Skype fix by flashing this kernel in CWM.
For better video playback in non Froyo roms, try MXPlayer. It can use software decoding that is optimized for ARM7 (Gtablet) so video playback is much better without working hardware acceleration. By the way where did you get VLC from?
Sorry for taking so long to reply. I'm going to flash Beasty when I get my hands on the tablet again. I'll apply the camera fix as well if need be. Any recommended tweaks to Beasty other than that upon a fresh install?
CM7 RC3 is out now as well, if Beasty isn't all it's cracked up to be I'll load it up. I'm kind of excited for Beasty though, looks great.
Also the VLC version I have is admittedly a little outdated, so I'll definitely be trying a new one. MXPlayer was studdery as well on my CM7 so I'll try on Beasty with overclock.
