Does S3 has black crush problem? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I was watching the "Iron Man 2 Trailer 2 (OFFICIAL)" on Youtube using my new Note.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNQowwwwYa0
At around 1:46-1:48, the video quality is very ugly. Can you try it on your S3? Anybody knows how to fix this problem? When playing the same video on my desktop monitor, it looks nice. When I played it on my iPodTouch, the quality was not as bad as the Galaxy Note.

looks perfect on my GS3 I have to say

I heard that the problem becomes more obvious when you watch the video at night or in the dark. Could you please test again?

This is an excellent test video for black crush: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cay2dnuhcs
To see what black crush looks like on an affected phone, see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a8aIGeLERg
This is why I returned my Galaxy Note and am considering a HOX over the GSIII - that kind of screen issue, whether it is software or hardware related, is unacceptable. It has been too long for Samsung not to have ironed out these production issues by now.

According to Supercurio they've improved panel production in the S3, but black crush still present and is a software issue. He is working on a fix and sounds like he's nearly nailed it.

In case of the Note, is it a software issue as well?
Does the fix require rooting? I prefer to use the stock GB at least for the time being.
Meanwhile, shall I return the note for a full refund (got a few more days to do so), keep exchanging until I get a better one (heard a guy for a good one after 5 exchange) or keep it with the hope that there is a software fix that does not require rooting nor increase in power consumption?

That would suck if true! It was so annoying when I had my note

I watched this video on my Note in a dark area. Strangely speaking, the image quality was excellent (crystal clear). No blocks of black images as I saw in the Iron man video. Am I missing something?

You know you can be rooted and still run stock right?
Not trying to put you down but it always amazes me when I see people on XDA who are not rooted. For the longest time I assumed everyone on XDA was. Guess that just goes to show how popular XDA has become. Seriously you should look in to rooting your device, you will not regret it. Also most Samsung devices are as easy as pie to root, and also unroot (if your in to that type of thing lol). Personally I would root if for nothing else than to remove carrier bloatware and unwanted apps to increase phone performance and battery life.

I watched them on my note. It is disgusting to watch these videos.
Extremely crushed blacks.
I hate my note for that.
That's another reason to give up note.
I ordered a s3 hoping no issues on that one.
I will immediately return it back if there are any screen issues.
But just one person answered op's question here. What about the other s3 owners and those videos in this thread? Any issues?

Sorry for stupid question, but how does one get that fix? Will that fix be included in some official update as well?

The app Display Expert will be able to fix the problem.
But it is not finished yet and requires rooting of the phone.

So, if I am willing to root my Note, the up-coming app will fix this problem in a satisfactory way? I have a week to return the Note. It will not be easy to return it. I failed to get an exchange/refund today. Samsung Brand Store in HK refused to admit the problem. Even ICS as several problems, the Assistant Manager keeps saying that there is no problem at all and he has never heard of any complain. (I am on GB) I went to a branch of a retail store where I bought the Note. The sales compared his and my Note. They both showed poor images in that movie clip. He said that he was not sure if my Note had any problem because his Note behaves the same. He asked me to go to Samsung Service Center to get an approval before his store would consider an exchange.

The app may not fix the problem on the Note.
Supercurio mentioned it's possible to do more fine tuning on the Galaxy S III
screen:
https://twitter.com/supercurio/status/208636123365392384
The problem is also more complex on Galaxy Note.
But it's better to ask Supecurio on his Twitter:

I just took a video of the outside view from my apartment. Very bad black crush problem during the entire video playback. However, when I used Screen Adjuster with system brightness set to auto and contrast at -80, black crush problem disappeared. The video just did not played back as nicely as it were played on the computer. The Screen Adjuster app removed the black crush problem of one video but not the iron man 2 trailer 2 video. Some frames of that video look very bad on my Note.
Is this what we have to put up with for the time being?

Are you using the Galaxy Note or the S3? Which version of the OS are you using?
My Note is the pink one which was released recently. It runs GB. Thanks.

Att note getting hot in the back and slow

After use it for 2 days. I've noticed it getting much hotter in the back panel compare to my Att Galaxy S2 and also the performance is worse than the S2. Got lagging. Anyone have this?

I'd expect it to be a little slower with the different processor. Maybe you should give it time to settle in and build caches? I'd expect it pan out after time.

Mine gets a little hot under heavy use, but I've not experienced any slowness.
The snapdragon s3 processor in the note might not benchmark as high as the exynos, but in terms of usability you shouldn't be able to notice a difference. In fact, there have been several reviews with side by side comparions of the ATT note and Intl. version, and some folks are even reporting that the ATT note is snappier feeling.
Lag? I haven't seen any at all... and heat? Are you tethering or downloading large files?

exactly where is it lagging at? just when scrolling things?
Used international note for over a month and so far, this AT&T variant feels much faster. Just my 2¢.

I had 2 different Skyrockets. The first was awesome. The second one got hot and had fast battery discharge. I took it back and they gave me a new one and all was great again. Not sure what the problem was but pretty much the same phone as these. Just fyi

I am running mine at both CPU and GPU overclock with 1.83GHz on the CPU(s) and not seeing additional heat generation. Perhaps you got a unit with an issue?
My skyrocket running 54mhz slower generates more heat than this (presumably due to less surface area to dissipate heat) - there may be a heat spreader internally that isn't seated properly causing heat build up in your unit?
Coming from the Skyrocket my new Note has some lag that I had never experienced before as well.
That being said, I don't believe it's the phone.
I uploaded a short video showing the lag that I get while using the twitter application, but then when using Tweetdeck you have essentially none, it scrolls like butter.
I've also experience some of the same lag like the one on the twitter app in the Gmail app as well.
It's not anything that I can't overcome, just slightly annoying.. Overall though this phone is absolutely KILLING my Skyrocket in every other facet.
The video might take a few minutes to process, but here is the link:

No issue with lag or heat on mine. Even when tethering it only gets a little warm on the back.

The white is beautiful.
. . . the official twitter app was loading images, while tweetdeck had loaded them all already. This situation may not speak to lag due to the device's fault, but rather the efficiency discrepancy between the two apps.
I've noticed a bit of lag in Tapatalk but that's it. Everything else is silky smooth. It gets warm, but definitely not hot.

I've notice serious lag on a few Craig list apps. But everything else has been smooth. Cept tried out go launcher. That lagged big time when trying to go to the app drawer. Notice standby times are awesome much like my skyrocket. So far even stock the note is awesome..i ran my skyrocket stock and rooted an Prolly the same for the note as its my work/personal line. Gonna sell my skyrocket. And keep my atrix to get my flashing and stuff to tinker with.and as a backup.

That's what I thought at first, but it's not the case, it just simply doesn't pull up the images immediately. I'll upload another video in a few to explain what I mean. The images are loaded and there, but whenever you scroll up and down they disappear and reappear.

I've used it on my SGSII, Skyrocket, Infuse, HTC Vivid.. none of them had that issue. I could be wrong, but I think it might have to do with it trying to force into the Note's screen resolution. Again, I don't necessarily think it's the Note's FAULT per se, but it hasn't done it on any other phone.
EDIT/UPDATE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WsMLsrnvhQ video I said I'd make showing what I mean.

All i know is none of the phones mentioned above had the same issue.
Again, I absolutely love this phone, and I don't think that it is the phones fault. I'm just stating that this app worked fine on every other phone I've tried but on this one its unusable. I've since downloaded Twicca and it works pretty well.

(Q) Questions re galaxy s3 prior to purchase - upgrading from note

I am thinking of upgrading from my note to the s3 as ive had enough of the laggy ics releases (its that bad im back on gb)
I have a couple of questions if you can help prior to ensure im not going from one pig in a poke to another.
1. Does the ics on s3 run smoothly?
2. How good is the camera? is there any pink spots like on the note?
3. Is the screen as good as it looks? i have a little banding on my note is this the case on the s3? also do black backgrounds look black or grey?
4. Will i regret it?
5. Is there any downsides to the phone / firmware?
6. Does the voice software work as its advertised unlike siri?
Just to let u know whilst i love the note i dont use the pen so ik not gonna miss that also the size of the screen there isnt that much difference so i can live with it
Thanks in advance

Well, I upgraded from a Note and I have never looked back...
I will try to answer your questions:
1. Yes, it runs very smooth, much smoother than the Note..
2. The camera in itself is just as good (or bad) as the one of the Note, but the S3 has much better camera software (instant shoot option, etc.) and therefore you will most likely get better pictures. Unfortunately occasionally you will still see pink spots.
3. The screen is really much, much better. No black crush problems and only minor banding.
4. I guess most people wouldn't regret to upgrade to the S3 from the Note as the S3 has so many advantages over the Note (for instance the S3 also has much better audio quality, longer lasting battery, better touch screen sensitivity, RGB-LED, NFC, ...). But of course, the screen is smaller and there is no stylus. So you might miss this nice 'small tablet feeling' that you can have with the Note.
5. Downsides? Well, honestly I haven't noticed any major downsides yet. Maybe one downside is that it feels quite slippery, like a peace of soap, in the hand. But you just have to put a nice rubberized case on it to fix that little problem.
6. Don't know how the voice software works. Have never tested it and do honestly regard it as a useless gimmick.

1 yes the ics on my sgs 3 runs as smooth as butter. I hav my phone since a week now and I have never experienced lag.
2 The camera quality is good. No pink spots.
3 The screen is absolutely gorgeous. You will never notice it is Pentile.
4 hmm that depends.. the SGS3 is definitely more future proof than the note.. it depends on how badly you want the SGS3.
5 Even though there might be a few software glitches.. I'm sure Samsung will release fixes through firmware asap! Btw the blue SGS3 has pink tints in some devices. I have a white model. No tint in mine.
6 As far as s voice is concerned.. I feel it could be a lot better. Hard to pick between the two. Siri is still in beta!
Hope this helped

1. Yes, very smooth.
2. OK, nothing mind-blowing. No pink spots for me, others have reported them.
3. Excellent screen for video playback. Colours are a tad oversaturated, whites are never really white, but I don't mind that.Banding very visible when scrolling through settings etc. Blacks are very, very, very black.
4. No.
5. Opinions will differ. Audio quality for recorded video is rubbish, slight lag when pressing the home button are the only two I've really noticed, but they don't worry me. Edit - redraws/reloading of icons with TW. Various fixes have been posted. I use ssLauncher, runs perfectly.
6. No, S-voice is about as reliable as Siri for me - i.e., not very.
The s3 is a nice phone, the note is more of a tablet. I upgraded from the note also. I really miss the big screen but the lack of black crush is a major plus.
The S3 is as smooth as possible so I don't regret the upgrade.

is the smoothness/fluidity equal to an iPhone 4 at least?

No Edge? Resolution not true HD?

Hey people... I had the Galaxy s 3 and wonder why there's no option for edge? Being on 4g 24-7 actually kills the battery bad! I truly feel that people with these 12 hours etc aren't using their phone
and another thing... the settings and in other parts of the phone, text is HUGE... the PPI is 306 i think and because the screen is 4.8, it takes away from the HD quality a bit.. the galaxy s 2 was annoying because of the huge font sizes.. and yes I know about the settings pertaining to font on the s3 but it's still huge when going to settings etc.. doesn't annoy anyone?
and another thing.. I dare someone turn on some music, (hopefully your base is working good), record a video with your gs3 and play it back.. you'll hear how muffled the sound is.. so terrible man

I don't actually have the phone yet, but did they remove the option under Wireless Settings --> Mobile Networks called "Use only 2G networks"? That's usually a stock setting. If they did remove it, guess it'll be available via CyanogenMod soon. :]

Did your previous smartphone have a decent microphone for video recording? In my experience, no smartphones have microphones capable of decently capturing bass... heck, even point-and-shoot cameras tend to be terrible at it now. I agree that it's lame, but this isn't a specific fault with the Galaxy S 3 as much as smartphone mics in general.
As far as battery life goes I have zero problems at all with it... I mean idk if your screen time is like 6+ hours with heavy usage or what.. I came from vzw and comparing it to any LTE phone I had on their network the S3 has great battery life..

Sucks to hear that - but I can confirm that the original Galaxy S (Vibrant on T-Mobile) had one of the worst microphones I've ever used on a device. Any recordings I made at concerts were completely inaudible and unusable.
You returned your phone over poor camera audio quality? How often do you record videos with your phone? You could buy a 1080p-capable Canon PowerShot that takes better video/audio for between $100 and $150.

If i do get it back.. i will definitely just use my REAL video camera now to record stuff.
The large text is one the reasons ppl say touchwiz looks "cartoony". The icons have always been oversized, as well as the text, and combine that with amoled colors that look under life like, and things do look as if they're right out of a cartoon. Samsung has the best hardware available, but their UI could look a little more "mature". I think Samsung is aware of people's disappointment here though? Unless the one x makes it Tmo, I don't think you'll do any better than the gs3. But, you could give the note a try, the video on it is very good, and I don't recall the audio appalling me, but your probably more critical in that area than I am. Also, the icons and text look slightly smaller on the notes 720p display because of its larger size. Good luck Bro, I hope you end up with something you don't have to settle for.

I really like the looks of this phone, hardware on paper looks pretty good as well, but after reading few posts here on xda it looks like phone is very slow with lots of bugs and choppy UI, on top it seems ICS update has made it worst.
It has got me worried whether i should buy it or not. I can't afford to make mistake as i will be using this phone for next 2-3 years. Please help me figure out!
So, I have few questions please answer them.
Q.1 Is this phone really slow with choppy UI?
Q.2 Does this phone have any hardware related bugs? (I've heard menu, home and back keys are not so responsive.)
Q.3 How much ram is available to user? (After gpu etc. taking its share)
Q.4 How much space is available to user for installing apps?
Q.5 How's gaming on it?
Q 6 Is ICS update an improvement of deterioration.
Q.7 How's video playback? Does it play divx/xvid?
I'm really sorry for asking so many questions but it will certainly help me decide. Thank you very much for your time.

Don't worry, I was in the exact same position as you. I was torn between buying sony X S and S2.
Before I reply I must tell you that internet reviews/forum posts don't mean much. You have to go to a store and hold the actual working phone in your hand to get the real feel.
I really wanted to buy S2 because it was cheaper than SXS by about 4000 INR back in April. But once I held the Sony SXS in my hand and looked at the superb display, my mind was made up on buying SXS.
Q.1 Is this phone really slow with choppy UI?
Nope, I am running stock ICS 4.0.4 works perfect.
Q.2 Does this phone have any hardware related bugs? (I've heard menu, home and back keys are not so responsive.)
Again untrue. The menu keys etc are fine, once you get used to them they will never annoy you. But you really should go to a shop and see it for your self.
Q.3 How much ram is available to user? (After gpu etc. taking its share)
After installing about 50 or so apps plus keeping GPRS data on most of the time I have about 225-150MB ram available. But remember that this is not a windows OS, so you don't need free unused ram.
Q.4 How much space is available to user for installing apps?
more than 25GB on internal memory + ~2 GB on phone memory
Q.5 How's gaming on it?
I play riptide which has 3d graphics and can push the hardware to the limit, never had any problems.
Q 6 Is ICS update an improvement of deterioration.
Definitely an improvement over GB in a lot of areas. The UI on SXS is much better than touchwiz provided by samsung.
Q.7 How's video playback? Does it play divx/xvid?
I play both Xvid as well as x264 encoded MP4s without any problems on the stock video player.
Lastly: samsung has been fooling Indian consumers by selling 9100G model which is technically inferior to 9100. so beware before buying.
Thanks a lot, your reply is a big help. I will checkout Xperia S at Sony showroom tomorrow.
One last question if you don't mind.
Have you ever experienced stuttering music playback while using maps or any other hardware intense app?
(Someone mentioned something about stuttering music playback when Bluetooth or GPS is enabled.)

S3 is unfortunately out of my budget.
No comparison really IMO. The XS screen alone will make you forget Galaxy SII. Even the Galaxy SIII screen is inferior to XS screen.
I'm very happy with my SxS, I still have it running on GB, I'll wait for the next ICS update-cycle before upgrading (or perhaps that will immediately be Jelly Bean).
But on GB, this is by far the best phone I've had or seen by friends/co-workers. There is also nothing in the ICS update I particulary want or need and I haven't seen (or wanted to use) any apps that require ICS yet.
I have seen the Galaxy S2, but it does have a lot of bugs in the GB Rom. Not sure about the ICS Roms. So I would definately go for the Xperia S. Also Sony support is really good, they read their own forums and really do fix their bugs, imho. Not saying Samsung doesn't, but for example LG is really crap in this area.
Despite of having some doubts i am going for SXS. Let's just hope for the best.
Thanks for your help guys!

I have stuttery music playback on GB and that can be if I've simply got a browser open in background.
To OP, my advice would be to get the SGSII because, in my experience, this phone hasn't lived up to expectations whatsoever. It might be because I got the phone so early after it was released, but then again it might not be.
Obviously the choice is yours, but I'll put it simply.
If you want a better spec phone with better graphics for gaming, video playback etc, then go for the Xperia S. If you want a great reliable phone to last over the 2-3 years, then the SGSII is your best option

My experience has been great with the Xperia S. I recently sent back a Galaxy Nexus because of the poor samsung build quality. I would never buy a Samsung except maybe a galaxy 3. But it is too expensive and still not worth it. Sorry but the Galaxy S 2 is not even a comparison to the Xperia s.

For general usage, my experience with the phone has been great and I can't fault it. It's just when it comes to being a heavy duty user, that it just isn't capable of working to the extent it should.
It also depends on how long ago you got your SXS because I got mine on the 2nd day of release in the UK, whereas if I was to have only got it over the last couple of weeks, I probably wouldn't be having these problems with it.

I would consider myself a heavy user and it has been really good so far. My buddy had a Galaxy S2 and had nothing but problems. The S can only get better too, because Sony has been release updates for it pretty quickly. If anything the op should consider a Galaxy Nexus or the Xperia S. Galaxy S2 is terrible.

So basically you guys are telling me there's bug in early builds of this phone?
^
Yes early batches (some of them) had the yellow tint screen issue. But all that is solved now in the fresh batches since May.

Yep, That problem was solved long time ago. People who got defective pieces, were replaced by Sony service centres.

Note 4 Pro Global Edition Motion Blur Display

Hey guys,
Does the note 4 in general has a problem with motion blur while scrolling through the screen? I experience this while using it now with latest RR Nougat ROM. As I only had MIUI for a few hours I can't tell if it's a ROM related issue or if it's hardware related.
I noticed it because I have a note 3 with RR and don't have that issue.
With bootloader unlocked official and installed TWRP, can I flash official MIUI marshmallow and stay with TWRP ans unlocked bootloader?? Someone has a guide for me? AS xiaomi.eu Rom is only on Nougat im afraid i will Run into Problems.
heres a video i made with my note 3 pro ... autofocus gone mad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxkBIMV2RO8
Thank you
Aida64 says it's a tianma panel. Could someone check if their tianma panel is always blurry too?? It looks like LCDs when they get cold outside.... Slightly blurry when in motion.
I'm in the exact same situation as you. I'm on the latest RR, I've got a tianma panel and i notice the blur when scrolling, expecially on reddit is fun while CF Lumen is active
You notice that blurry effect even while pulling down the notification bar icons?
Yesterday I flashed xiaomi.eu ROM. But no noticable improvement.... Today flashed lineage same blurry effect. As I don't know if on original MIUI ROM this effect occurs I'm thinking about flashing stock ROM with mi flash.
I ordered a second 4x in black which should arrive in 2 till 3 weeks. Im considering to sell this one already. Note 3 pro display is totally snappy against the n4

Yep, it's definitely there even when pulling down the notification drawer
No motion blur on my brand new Xiaomi redmi note 4 global edition nt35532 dsi panel.
Tianma panel here Note 4 global no blur whatsoever.... or should i say ghosting? It is snappy and works perfectly, currently using the last build of AEX Rom
okay, im already selling my note 4. what a pitty.
Ya, I have it too. I have a tianma screen.
do you guys with affected motion blur display have global version of the note 4? or note 4 mtk?
I have the global version (band 4 and 20) with qualcomm 625. I was thinking about buying a replacement screen from china and changing it.
Is it really that annoying to deserve to be changed? im just wondering because for me it doesn't sound that bad, but of course i would be mad if my phone screen comes like that on a brand new smartphone.

I used an app to change the screen colour for night viewing, and it goes a darker shade when scrolling. It's mildly annoying at best but not enough to ruin your experience. I think if a person is picky enough to change phones because of one small thing they can't live with they'll never find a good phone.

Yes it's that annoying. Everytime I scroll the text becomes white and lite and looks blurry.

well, for me the display is everything. i dont care about cpu, gpu etc. when viewing content on my device is awful. so everybody is different, maybe the most of the people wont even recognise it. but i cant stand it. so i will stay with my note 3 pro. ive ordered another note 4 in black, i will check if this has the same behavior.

Too be honest i couldn't see anything... and i gotta say i'm really picky when it comes to screens too... Like i would inmediately notice ghosting if i play a game with a monitor with low refresh rate.
Come on ... As I said I recorded it with my note 3 which too has a bad camera. I know what I've seen and asked for people who has the same problem. Nothing else. If you don't have a faulty screen please feel lucky but don't question what I can see on my faulty phone.

Chill my friend I'm just saying I don't see anything but if you do then you have the complete freedom to do anything you want with the phone, after all it's yours.... Never take an opinion serious more if it's on the internet.

It's more noticeable and annoying actually looking at it in person too.
