Docking keyboards - Galaxy Tab 2 Accessories

With my original samsung 10.1, Newegg sent me a free docking keyboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875998866). Will this work with the galaxy tab 2 10.1? I hope so.

Well took a look at the thickness and it appears that the original tabs were 0.34 and the tab 2 is 0.38. Man that is close

Is the connector in the same place?

I do not have it yet. While I was waiting for a reply I did find a thread where someone stated they could get it in there but it was really tight. Not sure if I would like putting that much stress on it.

The dock Connector is in the same spot but it is a snug fit and it does need to be forced our it will not fit

Maybe some careful work with a Dremel would do the trick?

Not sure if I would want to do that. I guess when it comes in I will try it and see what happens. If way too tight I will just cry and move on.

Tried the samsung dock. I don't think it's worth it to try to force the tablet into the dock. I went out and bought a Bluetooth keyboard

Sorry to hear it did not work out for you. So which keyboard did you end up getting? I'm considering getting a keyboard also.

I'm going to try sanding an old dock with Dremel, as someone suggested. Will keep you posted.

I was on the road this week and used the OTG USB adapter and a small USB keyboard along with either a stand or my portfolio case. Here's the trick. Put the tablet upside down so the connector is on the top. The screen rotates so you don't care. You have to be careful not to put the device such that the volume buttons get mashed down, but otherwise that's not a problem. The USB port is now on top and you can plug the keyboard in and type.
Not perfect because you can't charge and type at the same time, but not bad for a "field expedient!"

Dremel did the trick
I did some light sanding, grinding and brushing with a Dremel tool, that worked perfectly. I needed about .9mm in thickness and .1mm in width. After about 30 mins work, I was able to fit my P5100 into a dock belonging to a P7500. It now slips in and out perfectly, and will not damage the finish on the tablet.
If you're not confident with a Dremel, you could also use some low gauge sandpaper, which will also work, since there's very little to be adjusted. Be sure to concentrate on the parts protruding from the surface for the corners of the tablet.

Ah, no pics?

I'll post some better ones tomorrow. As you might be able to see, the finish isn't all that great, but it is pretty smooth so it won't scratch the Tab. The tab fits completely clean, shaking the dock does not affect connectivity, all keys work. I'll work on that some more with a rubber attachment or a polisher and post some updates. Here's what I've done so far.

Makes me wanna get one of these instead of waiting on Samsung to release one.

Very nice!!! I bought the dock with my P5113 thinking that they were direct plug and play and didn't realize that the Tab didn't fit in the dock connector.
I've removed the piece that holds the tab in the dock for now and am typing on the keyboard successfully. I'll probably have to do the same thing you did to modify the dock for a proper fit as I'm intending to use the Tab/keyboard combo as a laptop replacement in college this year.

This isn't a docking keyboard, but this is what I finally decided I am getting. What sold me is the size (this is a portable tablet, why do I want a non-portable keyboard?), the fact that is has a mouse nub, and the nice case it comes with which doubles as a tablet stand.

I assume you referring the student edition that released that includes , keyboard and usb adapter.Judging from the pictures of the keyboard I would guess it will not properly due to that part where tablet docks. It sticks up a bit which seems like it would not allow the tablet case to close as the dock connector would be in the screen. That's only my assumption from the pictures I've seen.

Thank you for your speedy reply. Please forgive my ignorance, I don't know what you mean by "student edition". I am probably wrong but I thought the user would unplug the usb and tuck it in the spine area of the cover before closing it. Of course that comes from not remembering where the usb is on the SGT2 but thinking it would be a good habit in general. As I had said I haven't gotten this tablet yet, the check is in the mail as they say. I do have a Nook Tablet that I rooted back the end of December that will be going to my mother as I want to "move up" in my choice of tablets. I would prefer the Samsung Galaxy Note S. I am short on part of the money so that is another determining factor if I should forget the SGT2 and a keyboard and save for the Note and basically not have to worry to match about needing a keyboard. Again Thank You! for your speedy reply. I will continue to look over those pictures to see what I can understand from them.

Hey guys I just ordered this and will let you know how I go:
http://wap.ebay.co.uk/Pages/ViewIte...l?ViewItem&item=140460255965&autoredirect=off
It's a case for the Zt-180. I checked and the measurements of the Zt-180 and gtab are very similar. I am fairly sure it will fit and I can see in the pic that the corner loops look to be elastic as well.
It should effectively fit similar to that kindle one others have been buying but the corner loops will be more flexible hopefully meaning that there is no need to cut off one corner like the kindle one.
Hi BAM,
I'd love to know how did it go with your case . I've got the same idea but since you are ahead of me so can i get a bit of feedback please.cheers..
Is it this one?
eBay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/10-Leather-Case...ltDomain_0&hash=item483eb6c286#ht_1763wt_1139
$12.79 with free shipping.
Size: 10.6" x 7.09" x 0.59"
It has a stand built in as well. Since it's not that expensive, I went ahead and bought it, along with this bluetooth keyboard/touch pad combo:
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Rii-Mini-Wi...ltDomain_0&hash=item4cf4a653c5#ht_6664wt_1200
$38 + $10sh, $48 total.
All in all, $60 spent. I also bought two docks from it2steve, I'm planning on setting up one dock on my nightstand, and then another dock in my living room for my tv. Then I could sit on the couch and type/control the tablet using the bluetooth device above. That's my logic at least, we'll see how it plays out.
I can see that set up you have working fine except the HDMI picture quality is lacking. Wish it output a better 1080p image to the screen via the dock. I also wish we can have profiles for the docked and undocked state. Let's say we have a way of automatically disabling the Wi-Fi, Adjust the brightness, enable blue tooth and enabling the HDMI all when in the docked state...now that would be great. But I still do like the dock.
All, remember that the quality of the 1080p playback will depend on the encoding used to create the video on the gTab to begin with. If i remember several posts by Robeet and others, high profile will not work on the Tegra2 CPUs, and we've already condensed the quality of the original to scale down to fit the 10" screen.
If you are expecting the lower quality to be upscaled, I think you'll be sorely disappointed.
I just received this case and so far it's not bad. I like that it hides the buttons on the right that I'm always pressing by accident and getting kicked out of whatever I'm in. The stand is not as sturdy as I'd like but it works. For the price, this is worth it for me.

Nah its not that case.
I am still waiting on delivery as I bought it through ebay uk and I live in australia. It takes ages for UK items to arrive.
The case I bought has corner loops just like the kindle dx case but from the picture i saw it looks like the corner loops are half elastic hopefully eliminating the issue that the dx owners have had.
The measurements however look almost spot on.
Will definitely update soon. I expect the case to arrive this week. Fingers crossed!
Should look like this:
http://www.digibite.co.uk/ebay_img/10_cases/lc_no2_5 (Small).jpg
BAM
It fits perfectly! Like a glove!
There's no cutting stretching or modifying required. As I suspected the loops are part leather part elastic so it hugs the corners with enough freedom to access everything. Power plug still accessible, USB and sdmicro ok, and nothing else is blocked.
The leather is firm but feels soft. There's a slide in tag rather than a button/buckle to keep it closed. It works well and means your not pressing against the screen.
I'll post up pics in a day or so as I'm cutting into drinking time now.
ZT-180 case
I have an ePad ZT-180 (which died). I think it is the same as the aPad. It came with a leatherette folding case that has a built-in keyboard. It is an exact fit. Not only that but the USB keyboard works with the G-tablet. One of the clamps interferes with access to the USB port but a few nibbles with nibbling tool made a notch big enough for the USB connector an still left it functional for holding the tablet in place. - Jim
does it work as a stand?
No it's just a folio type case not doubling as a stand.
And i've updated the first post with pics to show how it looks.

Case that works for gtab

Hey thanks for the info.I was also wondering if anyone has tried a Motorola zoom case.It looks kinda close, but wasn't if would work or not.
The xoom is about 2 inches smaller so the cases dont work. I tried to put mine in a friends xoom case
How well does it stay in the notches when in an upright position and being used? I find my CLIP from ElectronicCrap doesn't hold the bottom of the gtablet well enough when it's in an upright position and the screen is being tapped. It drops out of the notch and falls to the bottom position. :-(
Its a very tight/ snug fit. The bottom of the gtab fits onto a pocket that is as wide as the unit. I have no fear of it coming out of this case.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Actually I meant does the tablet stay upright while set in one of the notches, not whether the tablet itself would fall out of the case when in this position. Based on the design I would assume so which is better then the CLIP case does. Just wanted to confirm. Thanks.

Thanks,
Got one!
I went to Best Buy and grabbed one. Price there was $39.99, but the G Tablet fits very nicely. I took some pictures (sorry for the low light).
The Gtab slides in there very snug and secure. The top left strap just falls in between the volume rocker. It's not too bad, you can still adjust vol up & down very easily. And that same strap falls in between the power button and the USB cover. You can stil access it just fine.
I love how the case feels. You can fold back the cover all the way back and just use the tablet straight on, or you can open it and place it in one of the 3 little slots to adjust viewing angle.
I like it, it's very comfortable to sit in bed in and use. The multiple angles allows you to have it on your lap very comfortably.

Thanks!

If you are going to pay that much, why not consider the clip case then, its officially made for the GTab and even allow docking while the tab is inside it.

Thanks for the reply.
I can't figure out how can you slide the tab in the dock with the case on. I mean its a "just fit" with only the tablet and dock, so when I tried with my own case the couple of mm's added thickness just made it impossible to dock the tablet.
Can you kindly post a pic with the tab docked while in the case ?
Canadian distributor for clip and targus cases discussed in this thread.
Does anyone know of a shop in Canada that sells either gTab CLIP case, or the Targus truss case for the Iconia?
I'm unable to find these products at staples.ca, futureshop.ca, or thesource.ca, and I don't want to pay a bunch of duty/brokerage/shipping fees getting it here.
Thank you,

I got the targus case too and I am liking it. Yaa it is a little bulky, but it feels well made and fits the gtab gr8! I love the three angles I can prop it. It also has some serious cushioning, making me less nervous about damaging my tab.
Got it from BB for $35 after a 10% off coupon for labor day.
Picked up rooCASE leather folio from Amazon, and it fits pretty well with the exception of the opening for the power button.
I got a handy candy case for the ipad. Great for carrying, I wouldn't mind dropping it a few times in this case. It also has velcro grips that can be adusted for propping the gtab up. Not great but definitely not bad.

I ordered one of these things from a different site too.
Only after I ordered did I realise that it probably won't play nice with a case, unlike the DK30 which has the removable insert.
I think the other port could be a pass through. It looks like it takes a micro USB input and has a USB output port.

Cool will be interesting to find out what the usb port is for
one thing is it takes some effort for the phone to be plugged in right, doesnt seem to fit tight into the charger , out of 10 tries i got it to charge once
Yeah.. I was disappointed when the dock arrived today. The problem is that the magnetic connector isn't secured. It keeps moving around. I broke 1 of the 2 clips holding the magnetic connector while I was playing around with it. However I found a solution.... I just super glued the entire fitting under the insert together so it doesn't move around. Then put the insert back. Now it doesn't move and I get a secure connection each time.

bummer - was hoping it was going to be better. I guess for the price and after the superglue fix its ok. Can't really justify paying $50 for the official DX30.
btw did you work out what the USB port on the back does?
I agree I cannot justify $50 either. But it's not bad after the fix. I have not played around with the USB port yet.

my wife was able to get it to stick by keeping a paper sheet behind the phone while sticking it in the dock
Just thought I'd share a bit in case anyone's wondering what's inside here.
I tore mine apart cause I was curious why I was only reading 0.5V on the terminals (Phone wouldn't connect after trying numerous times) So I decided to see what was inside.
The four screws on the back are under the rubber feet, and it appears all of them were stripped out at the factory due to metal shavings all over the adhesive on the backs of the pads, and the lack of a proper slot on the head.
After removing those, it appears that the connector sits on a hinge piece inside to allow it to move up and down while accommodating the phone in the slot. Unfortunately, the connector attaches with a slot and couple clips, which are fairly weak. On the plus side, there is a rounded holder on the back itself which keeps the plug from being forced too far down inside (hopefully)
The circuit board is very simple, and comes out with 3 screws, one hidden under the rubber square on the board.
There really isn't much there, it appears that the USB port is simply to power a second device. I tested it and power is indeed coming out of that port. I tested it with my laptop and it does not appear that it passes data through that port to the microUSB, so it is a power-only connector. There is also a small fuse on the board.
I reassembled my unit and it has the proper voltage on the terminals, perhaps a loose connection somewhere inside the connector was to blame. It works but does require accurate alignment, no throwing the phone on the dock and expecting it to charge, which is fairly inconvenient. The idea of the mag connector is to be faster and easier than popping a door open and plugging USB in, but here it takes me just as long. Maybe removing the surrounds on the power pins would help, but that would expose it to shorts, so not sure how good of an idea that is.
Anyway, for $14, it works, and seems to charge. If you need a dock, and you don't have the money for the Sony official, this one gets the job done, mostly.

Sharon Keyboard "case" - Tab Pro 10.1

Hi, I thought I'd share this keyboard I bought. I bought an "VSO Slim Smart Cover" (without keyboard), but as I use my tablet mainly at home, I quickly got frustrated at how bulky it was and abandoned it except for when travelling, but the magnet wasn't strong enough so it would open on its own. Also, I do need to do some proper writing on occasion, but not often enough to justify buying (and carrying around) a laptop. So I found this keyboard that acts as a screen cover, cost me 40 € on Amazon.
Fit is perfect, clips and unclips easily enough and completely protects the screen. The tablet can be propped up, though in portrait mode the weight of the tablet means it won't take much to topple it backwards (but it won't topple on its own). It even comes with a bag to protect you tablet from dust while travelling. It weighs about 225g so it's nice and light, barely more than my previous cover, and recharges via USB. I prefer this to a case with an integrated keyboard because when I'm not using the keyboard, I can just put it aside and use the tablet without it being weighed down by a bulky case.
I was a little disappointed about the key size, which is about 70 % of a PC keyboard. So if you type with 10 fingers it might be a squeeze, but for everyone else I think you can adapt quite quickly, and the keys are proper keys, not like the Microsoft Surface keyboards where you can't feel if you hit the key or not...
Mine is an AZERTY, but of course they make QWERTY.

thanks for the post as i am always looking to improve from the poor selection we have as 10.1 owners. i bought one reviewed in here with a specific Android keyboard which is GREAT for getting things done but since most arent Android keyboards you will really appreciate External Keyboard Helper.
not only does it allow quick launch keys for mail, browser, menu, back, etc... but it also stops the annoying small on screen popup keyboard that can occur.
Am I alone in really not liking cases like these? You can't use it like a tablet with that thing on there because it doesn't hinge to the back, you can't type on your lap because the tablet just sits in a loose slot rather than being attached. It seems to ONLY exist to turn your tablet into a desktop, to put it in a bag and then sit it on a table and type. The tablet attached that thing is completely non-mobile. It's portable, but no longer mobile.

i agree 100% with you for my needs but i see a lot like this out there so they have a purpose. i felt i had exhausted my search and did a final decision thread here.

I can't disagree with you more. Yes, like any keyboard, this transforms your tablet into a mini laptop, that's why I bought it. I have no use for a complete cover with integrated keyboard as they are heavier and bulkier. Plus they fully attach to your tablet, they're not meant to be taken off often. So whatever you're doing you have to lug the cover around with it. Sitting in bed reading comics, I have zero use for a cover. Playing angry birds, I have zero use for a cover. Browsing the web, I have zero use for a cover.
This keyboard sits on a shelf when I'm at home, because I have no need for it. But when I'm away from home, it's no heavier than a cover without a keyboard, and protects the screen better than a lot of covers. When I open it up, the keyboard comes away, so I can either choose to use it, to either prop the keyboard up or actually type, or put it back in my bag and just use the tablet. Again, this is no heavier than most of the basic non-keyboard cases, so it's not extra weight. For me, this type of case makes the tablet much more mobile as you get to use the tablet without a case...
So I'm sorry, I don't understand your objections.
You got a link to where you purchased this? Or a model # or anything? I am having an absolute terrible time getting a keyboard for my pro 10.1. I bought the logitech one thinking I might be able to modify it to fit. No luck. I bought a M-Edge Stealth slim case that seemed like it might work great, only to find that the home button ceases to function when in the case. Im just about 20 minutes from returning this tablet.

Well I couldn't see it on the US Amazon site. But here is the one I got (AZERTY) :
http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00I44XXO4/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and I found the UK version here (QWERTY) :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sharon-Sams...=1405779926&sr=1-5&keywords=sharon+galaxy+tab
They're made by Leicke, a German company.

Nexus 6 Desk Dock (Not NFC)

Has anyone come across a good Nexus 6 Desk Dock yet? I am a developer and like connecting my phone to my computer on a dock when I program so I can send an app to the device without the cables getting in the way or touching the phone. I had one for my Note II and while it looked crappy, it got the job done. I don't need anything fancy, Universal works, too as long as the phone is in portrait mode and the cable can be reversed.
I came across this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MUHUCBI/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p107_d0_i3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1AD2M7P2BPSP2AG056PN&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=1970559082&pf_rd_i=desktop
I think I'd like to get something a little more secure, but this would probably work well for me anyways.
Sorry... *Not Qi... Long day. Tired and mixed up the wireless techs in my typing...

Connector isn't facing the right way. Its not going to work with Nexus or HTX One. Thanks though.. That's on the right track!
I JUST ordered one on amazon. It's supposed to be really good and the looks are exactly what I was searching for. It's called Bracketron Nanotek Stand. Mine's the aluminum silver version. Weird how we are both thinking the same thing even though I have never really thought of getting one for any device before.
I found what I'm looking for... but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I guess the technical term is cradle.

Since it was posted on their site January 6th, I guess it hasn't made it out to retailers yet. The sell a universal one for the M8 that would work with our phones, but I'd rather get something that supports the device on the sides as well.
This dock is perfect! Has anyone been able to get it yet?

If you don't mind waiting, the same thing can be had for half the price on ebay. FYI I am using one as an iPad stand and it's working very well. Good thing is it works with or without case, bad thing is obviously you need to plug the cable in manually every time.

The only US distributer is Naked Cell Phone (basically an eBay store but they do have a website). I contacted them 3 weeks ago and they said 10 days they should be receiving them.... So that's 11 late now ?. I keep checking their eBay store daily to see if they get them in.
Sorry if I am dreaming
I need a dock or stand that can handle a thick case.
Size of Nexus 6 is 6.27" x 3.27" x 0.4" (159 x 83 x 10.1 mm), so it should handle 0.4" or greater.
Something like this:

I ended up getting that one. After bending to make room for a USB cable on the bottom and still allowing it to stay upright and not fall backwards, I still only kinda like it. It works if I don't have to touch the phone. If I have a button on the top half, it falls backwards.
Thanks. Do you remember where you ordered it from?

I got it from Amazon. Ended up buying the RND dock that recently came out on EBay. Gets here on Saturday.
I found this desk dock that looks like it would do the trick and it's cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Micro-USB-Desktop-Charge-Windows/dp/B00RWFVS1Q/
I don't have my Nexus 6 yet, but can someone tell me if or how this works with Daydream? According to this: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2818748?hl=en 'By default, your device may only Daydream when it is docked. If you want your device to Daydream whenever it is plugged in, make sure to set "When to Daydream" as "Either" or "While charging."'
Are the docks wired for the phone to know if is docked like the Galaxy Notes I have had, or is there another way? Are there special docks that enable dock mode for the Nexus 6? If so, I haven't been able to find any yet.
I bought one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IMOBI4-2I...t=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item43d6b7daf6..
It's properly made for the Nexus 6 and fits perfectly. You may not want the landscape orientation but it works well for me.
This is the one I'm using: http://fuzdesigns.com/pages/EverDock
Not keen on universal docks
I have to say that I am not a fan of universal docks like the Ever Dock. The bottom of the N6 is rounded and the lack of support at the sides means it can wobble while plugged in.
Sooner or later this is going to damage the USB port.

They have a thicker rubber part you can buy. That plus the case on the phone means the phone rests evenly on the dock.
That makes sense. I hate cases so I keep forgetting that a lot of people use them.
Has anybody found one that activates dock mode for Daydream?
