Random No Service Error ? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had this Galaxy S II since launch and everything was fine upto the first ICS beta firmwares, after that I just keep getting random no service which is starting to get annoying.
I've tried reinstalling older firmwares which didn't produce this problem in the past but it still happens and I've tried different modem files.
It's not signal strength as it's usually very strong.
Any suggestions guys? I could really use some help.

ive had similar issues on three uk.
My problem was my phone was picking up 2 cell towers and automatically connecting to the one that was furthest away, thus a crap signal all the time and sometimes nothing.
I solved it by going to the mobile settings, doing a manual carrier search where indeed three appeared twice, i tried them both to see which was the better one, then i manually registered to that one.
Since then ive had no problems at all.

I'm with giffgaff and I selected O2 manually, still getting no service.
Thx for the suggestion though.

Bump
Would like to sell this phone soon, so need it working normally.

[Q] SGS2 3G Hanging

Hi,
I've had my SGS2 now for around 2 months and thought it maybe be a firmware bug, but have recently upgraded to the latest via Kies which is KE4 and still notice from time to time that the my 3G just wont work.
If I try and access anything via 3G for example webpages you just get page cannot be found, but strangely enough what I have noticed the is H symbol will have a Green UP arrow active but nothing ever happens. In order for me to fix it I have to disable 3G via apndriod and then turn it back on again, as soon as this is done the 3G works as normal. Does anyone know of a fix for this?
I'm on the O2 network if that helps but I think its more than likely a bug with the firmware/phone.
Cheers in advance.
Davey
I've noticed it happen once or twice... but I just hold the power button, and then de-activate and then re-activate the connection from the popup menu. Sometimes when it has hung it can take a fair while to kill it after de-activating as well. But its literally only happened 2 or 3 times in the whole time I've had it; I've had catastrophic battery drainage more often which is a lot more annoying.
I've had the same issues on my phone aswell. I just got mine back from the repair shop and the problem still remains. The guys on the repairshop said it worked fine when they had it, but now its the same again. I dont know if it is my network operator who has problems with my phone staying online or what it is. But its damn annoying, I to have to disable / re-enable the 3G connection for it to start to work again.
I've yet to find a fix for this.. I'm on a network called OneCall, in Norway.
Any tips would be great
I had the same problem when I disabled fast dormancy.
Hello. Since about a week ago, I have this problem PERSISTENTLY. My phone is 3 months' old, I bought it new and unbranded from a store in town, and never rooted it. Only thing I did was upgrading the firmware through kies to the latest version available in my contry (KE7 if I'm not wrong). I have adroid version 2.3.3.
Well, I have found no solution to this problem that is absolutely unbearable.
I shall get rid of this phone as soon as I can because I am really annoyed by discovering problems after problems. I never had any iPhone, but I will try buying the iPhone 5 when it comes out. Hopefully it will work better. After all, it can't be so difficult to make a phone better than this one!
By the way:
I have 2 contracts with vodafone, one on this phone and.the other on a Nokia n95 8GB. Tried swapping the sim cards. Reault is that after the swap on the nokia there still are no problems whereas the SGS2 is still hanging on 3G and H.
So it isn't a problem of the operator, neither it is a problem of sim cards (also because they are different, one is 32k and the other is newer, and 128k).
Now, before throwing this absolute crap of a phone out of the window, I'd like to try a factory reset. But the question is: will I have to reinstall feom scatch every single app, after the reset? Is there a way to back up allbthe installed apps and easily reinstall them, without rooting the phone? I absolutely don't want to root the phone because I'm pretty sure I will end up selling it and so I don't want to loose the warranty.

Factory reset will mean you lost all data, everything on the phone that you dont backup.
But that might not fix it, your best bet is to try a newer modem, as its more a modem issue not a rom issue.
Thank you, veyka.
I just seem to habe found the solution! I disabled fast dormancy by dialing *#9900# (there's a hidden menu).
So far it's working great! It appears that my mobile network is not optimised for that protocol, therefore it must be disabled im.order to get proper internet connection.
So... anybody with this problem, try dialing *#9900# and tapping on "Disable fast dormancy" it is a fully reversible action (just in ca se...). Im fact, it cam be re-enabled at any time from the same hidde menu.
POST NOTE: No. This doesn't work. I spoke too soon...

This problem has been around for a while and I read somewhere that Samsung said they were working on a fix for it. I have had the problem from day 1 and it still does occur with Fast Dormancy disabled. I don't know if some of the newer Firmwares have fixed this or not. I am running official UK KF3 Firmware.
In fact, the fast dormancy trick worked only foe a short time. Now I'm back on wifi. What a disaster of a phone.
I talked to my network operator last night. They told me to go to settings->wireless and network->Mobile networks->Network operators and set it to manual, instead of automatic.
After this it seems like the problem wanished, but it might be just for now. Will test for a few days and come back to this!
Hey this is certainly a good suggestion! Maybe when signal is poor the phone starts searching for other networks and drops the connection. Good point indeed. I will make some trials as well.
Cheers

Roaming Constantly

Hey all! I have a very odd issue with my SGS II i can't figure out.
I bought a SGS II from Telstra outright and rooted it, installed CWM, installed CM9 and had been happy for about a month. Last night i flashed a few different roms to try them out (being a massive MIUI fan). Anyway, after flashing a few roms and playing around a bit i realised my phone was no longer connecting to the Telstra network and the signal icon was grey and no apps could use data and only rarely would it check for messages, often getting 3 or 4 sms's at once.
So i flashed back to CM9 today and still have more or less a mp3 player since it refuses to connect to telstra.
I have tried many many modems including all of the telstra shipping ones and wiped before and after each to make sure they stuck. (An idea from whirlpool in my readings).
Also i have tried many different roms.
Can anyone shed any light on what is wrong? I should get full reception from telstra in my room, it being the dominant network in Australia.
Also, when i choose search for networks it just keeps saying it is looking for networks until you quit it, and i have full bars on the roaming network, presumably optus or vodaphone.
Thanks!
Okay, turns out i just needed to re-seat my sim card (remove and put back).
So yay! Fixed!

Keep losing data connection.

I have an unlocked unrooted S3 on Vodafone UK. This issue has been happening for the last few days whereby i have full 3G/H+ connection, but absolutely no data is working. No email, no websites loading, no whatsapp, nothing. The issue goes away as soon as I restart my phone, but then it comes back after a few hours.
Has anyone experienced this, and if so, how have you fixed it?
Go back to your network/phone provider .
Or flash different modem .
jje
I am having this issue too. I may be wrong, but i realise this happens if i turn off my Wifi, the 3G will not want to connect to the 3G network.. Anyone else having such problem?
By the way mine is International version (Location: Singapore)
I'm having a similar problem where I have a good 3G/H/H+ connection but data seems to drop intermittently across all applications - I get the same sort of error message in browsers/facebook/twitter that you receive when you have no signal.
Anyone have anything similar and know of any fix?
I am not having such issue so far. I been updating my SGS3 using over-the-air update. I guess the MODEM has been updated as well.
Go to market and download "fast dormancy"(by gorkhanmoral) then disable it and reboot.
Check if your speed has improved,if it got worse then enable it again.
U need ROOT to use this tool.
I it didn't help, then flash a different modem
This is good modem
Cwm flashable

have you got any battery saving app like juice defender installed in your phone?
Is mobile data working at all? or is it constantly "uploading" but never "downloading" (up arrow lights but not down).
If what I just described is your issue then this is a network issue relating to android in general.
Basically your phone will be connected to two radio towers and gets confused as to which one it should use, rebooting or flight mode may help force it onto one tower or you may have to speak to your carriers "high network technical team" or whatever they are called for you to get them to force it onto one tower.
I had this issue on the HTC hero (a long time ago now) and it took 9 months for Orange UK to work out what was going on.

Congrats. Orange Luxembourg (my gf's network provider) still hasn't got a clue.. But they seem rather clueless about everything except writing invoices.
Flashing an Asian modem on her S2 made the issue far less prominent since they seem not to get confused by antenna ping-pong. (Tango Luxembourg, my carrier, has this issue too in the main city)

[Q] 3G not working

Hi there.
I have Lumia 920 Black on EE in UK.
Last month when Amber (french one) got leaked, I installed it and tried straight away.
It wasn't big difference to me in fact it had a bug where if I create an all day calendar entry using google account (not tried with Live account),
it will save the even entry as day before?
It bugged me so much so I decided I will install EURO Dev version.
So I did and everything seem to work fine untill I go outside my house.
I kept on getting no signals. And when I had signal it was constantly on EDGE. Never on 3G.
I did reflash and restart and all it doesn't seem to help. When I restart the phone I get 3G briefly for seconds until it loses service totally then come back with full EDGE signal.
I have found a old firmware RM821_1232.2109.1242.1010_RETAIL_eu_euro1_342_10_97021 and flashed it. And did update through OTA.
Still no 3G. I called EE today for help. They told me it could be the sim.
So I tried on my old iPhone 4 and its all good. I get full 3G.
Anyone know what may be the problem? And if EE offers a repair, will they found out that I've playing with flashing the device and tell me its not covered by the warranty?
Thanks you all!

I know the issue exist on the ATT Dev Rom, you just have to go into the Access Point app in the settings and pick the correct APN, (the flash defaults it to the wrong one. ) but I don't know if that's the case for the EE version. I suppose is possible, it can, and is suppose to load, the APN from the Sim, so if it worked with the iphone sim then check those settings.
Thanks for you reply. Did what you said but it did not help at all. It's not like my data isn't working. It's just on EDGE all the time. Sometimes I don't even get calls through and later get message from EE saying I had a miss call. Called Orange (runs on EE) about it and they said maybe its my sim. So tried it on my iPhone and I get 3G straight away. Need to ring them again. But their call waiting time is ridiculous. Called them yesterday and call queue was 2 hours!!

Emergency Calls Only / No Data SIM - Three UK

Hello all,
I am having an intermittent but a strange signal problem with my wife's OnePlus X and I suspect that this is some sort of software issue with the modem firmware and not a hardware fault.
Basically if you reboot the phone, 9 times out of 10 there will be absolutely no signal whatsoever on the 3 UK network, the phone will just state emergency calls only. This happens on both 3G and 4G, but we usually have 4G turned off as there are not many areas within our region that support 4G yet. If you search Available Networks 3 doesn't show up.
Usually leaving the phone for hours the signal will come back, but sometimes it can be fixed by going into the Test Menu by putting *#*#4636#*#* into the dialer and going to Phone Information -> Toggling the Radio off and On a few times, but this doesn’t work every time. My phone is also on the Three network, so I have tried putting both SIMS's in the OnePlus X at the same time and the same issue occurs in both SIM Slots. If I put a Vodafone SIM in as well as the Three SIM, the Vodafone SIM works absolutely fine, regardless of the SIM slot it goes in, but it maintains a signal each time. The problem isn’t signal in the area as we have full signal in our house. If I put my wife's SIM into my LG G4 it works absolutely fine 100% of the time.
Three will not help us as the phone isn’t supplied by them, this is getting to the point now where this phone is becoming unreliable to use because if you have to reboot, chances are you won't have any signal for hours on end.
This happens on OOS and CM13 and has done for months.
Has anyone come across this issue before?
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?

I have the same problem and solution is nowhere to be found...
Did you find any solution to this? I've got this problem with my OPX.

My wife ended up getting rid of the phone a few months ago, she couldnt put up with it any longer as it was just the same. I don't think it was a hardware fault with the phone as it worked fine on any other network but Three. The phone supported all the frequencies that Three offers, so I have no idea why it didnt work right but certainly something wasn't right.

When I had recently visited the UK, I had trouble connecting to the Three as well(through my home SIM as International Roaming). It didn't work so I ended up buying an O2 SIM that worked just fine.
I fixed it by putting some scotch tape over the back of the sim card, My OPX is almost 2 years old and the sim card is not in good contact with the phone inside I think.
