[Q] Should I buy RAZR over RAZR Maxx if cheap? - Motorola Droid RAZR

The manager at our local Verizon store has offered us what I think is a really good deal on 2 RAZR phones. He says he can give us 2 RAZRs for $185 with a $100 MIR (so 2 for $85 after MIR). If we wanted RAZR Maxx instead it would be $295 (for 2 phones with no MIR).
What do you guys think? I know the RAZR and the RAZR Maxx are basically identical except for the battery and form factor. Is the battery in the RAZR sufficient that we should just go for it since its such a good deal? Or should we consider something else completely like the Nexus?

If money isn't an issue, go with the Maxx. But the regular RAZR is still a good phone.
Sent from my Android powered coffee coaster.

It comes down to one issue- battery life. If you're a heavy user, the thin Razr will need to be charged a couple times a day. If you're looking for a super-thin phone and won't spend a LOT of time using 4G data, watching movies, etc, the original Razr would be a good deal.
But, me personally, the fact I can go 2-3 days between charges with a LOT of use is very important. I get paranoid about running out of battery and the Maxx gives me some peace of mind.

I'm just trying to sort out if all the hype about the RAZR Maxx is solely because of the battery life or if the phone itself is worthwhile. In other words, if the Maxx were not on the market, would the RAZR be the top dog?

i like my razr, the maxx was out when i upgraded but i could'nt find one anywhere, today my phone has been unplugged for 6 hours and i still have 76% battery left if you play with it for a while you will get battery use comparable if not better than most smart phones, and i believe verizon still has a 14 day exchange policy, all that being said if money is not an issue the maxx would be the better choice

First I live in an area with no 4g,
Get the maxx the battery is killer. I text, facebook, web, netflix and can skip a day for charging (mostly wifi). In 25 mins it will go from 30% bat to 70-80%.
imo
rooted
cwm
voodoo
adaway
2.36 cmda 181

If you're upgrading or adding a new line, I highly recommend buying form Amazon Wireless. The Razr is currently $0.01, and I think the Maxx is $100.

The battery is really what sets the MAXX apart. While my MAXX has been the most stable and smooth Android phone I've had (both of which are shared equally with the RAZR since the battery has nothing to do with it and the software is identical), I'd have a tough time getting the RAZR over the Rezound or even the Galaxy Nexus (both of which I previously owned). Honestly, I think if the MAXX was never released, I would have ended up keep the Rezound over the RAZR and the Nexus. But the MAXX is just the best all-around phone on Verizon right now, hands down. And the battery has a lot to do with it.

If you're not a heavy user and you want a cool looking phone, get the Razr. If you use your phone heavy, get the Maxx. There's no phone that can compete with the Maxx battery life right now. I've had both. The only differences are the way it looks and the battery life. But for me, the Maxx is so worth the money. I don't have to do all those battery saving tips and tricks previous of owning the Maxx. I can leave the house in the morning in confidence knowing I won't have to charge my phone again until I go to sleep......With heavy usage!!

Considering to buy a Razr..

Hello
I am atm considering to buy Motorola Razr. I really don't know why but the design appeals. Just wondering how many people have problem with: The screen (very yellowish colour, is that true?), sim-card losing connection, headphone jack stop working etc. I can buy the Razr brand new for 615$ (without contract) is it worth? Previously owner of: SGS, ZTE Blade and HTC Desire Z. Horrible build quality on these phones imo. I know the Razr have pentile but does it really matther? My brother owns an SGS atm, I think SGS I9000 also have pentile but I never noticed it. Any suggestions? please feel free to comment
NO PROBLEMS HERE JUST PURCHASED THE DROID RAZR MAXX....I highly recommend it if you love your battery, it lasts really long

$615 for a Razr and not the Maxx, bummer. I was the fool that just bought 2 razr maxxs for retail because the droid charge sucked that bad. Verizon wouldnt do anything. Go 2 more days to see if they might change out contract date.

I have the Maxx and love it. Have had good luck with Motorola. Only difference between the two are battery. Same software. Dont know much about LG.
alright mate. I really hope Motorola unlocks the bootloader, after that the phone will be completed. I will hopefully order it today or tommorow.
I just got me and my wife both razors and i love mine alot so far. Wife is just getting use to a all touch screen phone but she likes it so far. Great phone and my batery lasts with using it for work and play lol
Don't consider buying a Razr. Get a Razr Maxx. By far the best handset i have used in looooooong time. Battery life, connectivity, and overall it really is a great phone.

I would totally agree, as someone who's owned 5 droids (eris,Incredible 2, Droid X, Bionic, Razr, and the Maxx) the Razr Maxx has smoked them all in battery life and quality all around.

Not available in EU
I have a standard Razr in the UK and never had any problems with it at all. Had it nearly 3 months now and it always makes me smile and impresses people, some of which have Galaxy SIIs and various other models. I think the bootloader thing will probably happen eventually and ICS is not far away I reckon. I also have a HD Dock, which is cool.
The battery life is pretty much the same as any smartphone in the EU as we don't use LTE networks (which seem to be one of the big battery drainers). I charge it when I go to bed every evening but it lasts easily the day with wifi, data, GPS all on and a couple of hours music, surfing etc.
I'm loving my Maxx. It lasts all day without me having to worry about running out of juice or jumping through any battery-saving hoops. Leave WiFi on, Bluetooth, GPS, whatever - use it all I want all day long and plug it in when I go to bed, no worries.

razr's the best! use it in stock rom with no problem at all

I love my Maxx.

I've had a lots of phones in the short year and half with Verizon and I can honestly say the Maxx has really got a spell on me. I love this phone.
It's battery last me over 4 hours on LTE which is something my old Nexus could never do even with the a 3500ma battery. The speaker is loud, and the camera is great especially video.
This is the only non vanilla ui which I actually like. It may not be stock but it's only lightly skinned. I don't even feel a need to root the phone.
I just wanted to put that out there.

Right there with ya!! I had the GNex for 8 months prior to switching to the Maxx, and I too love this phone! Notifications I can hear, crystal clear phone calls and a super insane battery!
~~ Tapped from the 7th dimension~~
Root for ti backup and undervolting in my case. Undervolting might not be necessary for battery life, but the phone is also cooler under volted.

I just got a plain RAZR as a replacement phone after 3 Galaxy Nexus. I haven't sent back the Nexus yet but think I will stay with the RAZR. It is a nice piece of hardware and the radio is definitely better. Now all I have to do is get past the development side and I will be all set.

I have AT&T and had a GSM Galaxy Nexus for 6 months. Finally snagged a GSM MAXX on eBay and am selling my Nexus.
It's pretty awesome, even with missing Jelly Bean.
The Rezound I had died and the only replacement they could offer was the Maxx. Much easier phone to use. In my research the specs were better on the Rezound so I went with it, real world use of the two showed me the Maxx was better.
I have not even had the desire to root it like I did my Dinc and Rezound. But I miss TB and Adway.

New RAZR owner coming from Galaxy Nexus....

what can I expect? I suffered unfortunately through 3 replacement phones...my original phone overheated and had touchscreen issues, the 1st replacement had no microphone, the second replacement had bad data, and this last one was great, strong data, everything worked....until three weeks later, it won't charge anymore (luckily i have 2 batteries and an external charger) and my volume rocker crapped out on me...doesn''t say much about the refurbed units VZW is using in their replacement program...so I was offered a Droid RAZR MAXX for my troubles...and will be receiving it on Thursday...now I had an OG Droid, but have since had an HTC DInc, Sammy Fassy, and now the GNex...I'm a little out of the Moto rooting game, and trying to catch up on all the info since the RAZR MAXX had been released is a little daunting to say the least...
1st, how is the phone, radio, call quality, speaker, speaker phone...i can only expect it to be as good if not better than my OG Droid.
and 2nd, how strong is the dev commmunity for this phone and what really can we do with this beast?
I am a little excited to get back on a Moto device, and definitely excited about the RAZR MAXX HD which i was going to get as soon as it came out, but i'll have some fun with this phone for awhile first!
Locked boot loader... kexec roms are rolling out though ( custom kernels). Beast battery life, screen pixel density is better on nexus but the colors are better on the razr. imo. Best data/call reception a verizon device has to offer. Hands down...

is that beast battery or best battery? lol...either one would be correct IMO...
great to hear about data/call reception...Sammy has horrible data...their hardware has weak signals...they claimed it was reporting to the OS wrong (signal bars in notification bar), but that was never cleared up...dbm has always been lower than other phones
is there a panoramic mode for the camera? that's the one thing i'm going to miss from my GNex...but going from 5mp to 8mp is a nice thing. panoramic mode is an ICS thing though isn't it?
what's the best root method...i see a couple out there

Go to droidrazrroot.com and follow the instructions, it always works and is simple.
Outgoing voice quality is the best of any phone currently made GSM phone (not sure about CDMA) which is why I have one. I'll be comparing to iPhone 5 when it actually is available for testing though.
Worst Decision you could of made. If i were you, I'd throw your Razr on a railway track and watch it get ran over.
Razr never gave birth to a decently sized dev community.

Razr has panorama. still wouldn't recommend it over a Nexus though
I had the GNex for about 2 weeks and dumped it for the Razr Maxx back in April. I've been very happy with the switch. At first it was a little disappointing because the Razr was still running Gingerbread. But after the ICS update there wasn't really anything I didn't like about it. Screen is a little smaller, but it's big enough. Reception, both voice and data, is much better on the Razr.
And the battery life will blow you away. With the Gnex I'd go to work and by noon I'd be down to 30% battery left. And that was with the Samsung extended battery. Now I get home at 5PM and I'm at close to 60% left. It's a pleasure being able to get through the day without having to plug it in. It's a pleasure to forget to plug it in at night and not have a dead phone when you wake up.
I dumped my GSM GNEX, which is arguably much better than the Verizon GNEX. Don't regret it one bit. I love the GSM RAZR MAXX. Just put ICS on it (or get the carrier ICS since Verizon has it out) and enjoy it. No more futzing with low volume, short battery life, etc. It just works and lasts forever on a charge.
I'm done rooting and kernel surfing. The MAXX works great for me and I always have my Nexus 7 for JB goodness/pure Google stuff. The MAXX is the portal to that device and I wifi tether to the tablet all the time. Works great.

Most versatile device I've ever seen
Motorola RAZR MAXX - XT912 - .215 radio - SimplexROM 1.2 - Wigdetsoid - Tether - Linux Installer w/ Ubuntu 10.10 - Otter Box - Safestrap - Chrome - Tweaked Camera - AIDE - 80gb Storage w/64 removable

I think the post above misread it without the M, if you're in for performance, get the M, if you're in for the battery get the Maxx.
If I were you though, I'd get the M, the Razr is aging and if you own one you'd realise that out of the box the Razr is rather slow in performance compared to other devices, and JB is most likely the last Major upgrade that you'd get from Motorola apart from minor bug fixes although one may also argue that custom ROMs are available, this might also be the time that someone highlights the locked bootloader. So id get the better hardware since both of them have locked bootloaders
Did you pay retail for it? Maybe wait for the Maxx HD and get the best of both words?
I think that the MAXX is better because of the Battery

I thought "m" was a typo. I'd definitely choose the RAZR M over the old Maxx.
If you can get and keep signal, keep the M. Otherwise send it back and get the maxx. I had the M and LOVEEEED it!!! It was by far my favorite phone ever to date. However it is known for having poor signal reception, which mine did have. Mine switched between 1x and 1 bar of 3g at my house. I was forced to trade it in because of this. I now have a razr maxx and get 3-4 bars of 4g at home. But it is noticeably slower at computing. I can't wait for the razr hd to come out, i hope it doesn't have the antenna problems like the M. If the antenna issue is resolved, i will be getting the HD and giving the maxx to my wife. I just hope rooting support comes out with the HD.
P.S. The razr M battery is fine for average users. It's bigger than the original razr battery. I'm not a heavy user, more like average. With the M, at the end of the day, i still had about 30% battery. With the maxx, i have about 60%
I dont Know price razr and maxx in your country
in my Country ,price range betwn razr and max is to high
razr + powerbank = razr max (is just my opinion )

Droid Razr or S2

I am thinking of getting one of these. I was first looking at S2 but its build quality and its battery life held me.
How is the battery life of Droid Razr compared to S2?
Anyone who owns or have used both of these, can put some light?
Thanks
Get the Razr MAXX instead, u wont regret it
I have a razr and my dad is using s2.
When I was helping him to setup the phone, I regret buying razr. S2 has better battery life and performance in ics.
S2 has terrible voice quality, RAZR has excellent incoming and outgoing voice quality. That may or may not be important to you. Most people seem not to care at all.
Imo S2 has more custom ROMs than in Razr
If it's the regular RAZR then I'd go with an S2. If it's a MAXX, go with that.
Source: Owned both RAZRs.
Sent from my RAZR MAXX
Build quality, design, call quality, battery life: RAZR
Video/Camera quality: S2
Overall, I would choose a Razr over an S2 without thinking twice.
The screen in the Razr = S2 and is a little bit bigger (0.03 inches or something like that lol).
Battery life, after trying both devices, I have to say Motorola is better.
ICS, yes maybe the GS2 has a lot of developers and custom roms, but the Razr stock ICS is the closest thing to a vanilla Android device.
Last but not least, actually the main difference which makes the Razr much better is webtop. HDMI port + Webtop on ICS is impressive.
Razr isnt a piece of plastic

One thing if anyone can help me with. The battery.
If I use the Razr for like 30mins call, and almost always on 2G or 3G internet, data connection with decent brightness, how many hours can I get? Possible to get around 12 hours?
In short, Razr has better battery backup than S2? Yes, mAH-wise and duration wise also?
I Googled it, but different sites gave different answers.

Well, battery is good. Motorola has an app called Smart Actions which will save battery by turning GPS and Data off when the phone is not being used. With Smart Actions, and moderate use, I got 40% left at the end of the day.
But I noticed that I was using the app wrong, so I decided not to use it. When I didn't use it, I still got a day with moderate usage.
S2 battery is 1650 mAH
Razr is 1780 mAH
If you can get a MAXX, it would be even better, but from my experience, the Razr battery is fine.
Eh..XT910 got the bigger battery, and the higher score with lower price.I perfer XT910.
Sent from my XT910 using xda app-developers app
The wife has the s2, I have a Razr. Til the ICS update I would have been leaning towards the S2, but now I am pretty fond of my Razr once again
Both are great phones, but I think the Razr has a superior build quality and endures daily use just a tiny bit better.
The design could perhaps settle things for you? The Razrs look is not for everyone whilst the S2 is pretty mainstream.
If updates matter to you there is a good chance of the Razr getting JB whilst the S2 probably will stay on ICS.
Then of course there is the company service to consider, and that would two months ago have prompted me to advice you to run from Motorola as fast as possible, but now Google has finally taken over so hopefully change is on the way.
Bottom line.:Take the phone you feel most inclined to, both has their soft spots but are killer deals right now.
BUT if you can sving the ekstra bucks for the Razr Maxx the choice is bloody simple. Buy the Maxx.
