Losing Apps At Restart - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Has anyone experienced apps that become uninstalled because you restarted the phone? It has happened twice and both times the phone had been running for several days. If I restart it right away to try and duplicate it, it does not seem to happen. Doesn't seem to be related to apps that get installed into phone memory versus internal. Last time it happened there were about 20-30 apps that were uninstalled. They still have shortcuts on the desktop but would just pop up this app is not installed when I would go to use it. Very annoying to have to re-install that many apps! Thanks for any help!

I haven't noticed that but did notice some apps i freeze in titanium seem to unfreeze on reboot. Maybe the issues are related to the stock ROM somehow.
Random Uninstalled apps would be a lot more annoying though.

Thanks for the reply! It is very annoying. Would fast boot have anything to do with it?

I've also noticed a few apps uninstalling themselves.

Did it happen right after a restart?

Well, I think it is fixed but not sure which change fixed it. I uninstalled appBrain, app2SD and turned off fast boot. None of these were issues with the OG EVO. I wonder if app2SD was causing issues now that there is phone storage and external SD?

Well, it did it again. This is getting old fast. No one else has this issue? Guess it's time for a factory reset.

I've had this issue with the 3D and hope not to have it with this phone. Another restart usually fixed it.

I had that issue all the time with my Samsung Galaxy E4GT. I haven't seen that going on with my Evo 4G LTE.. Hope I don't start having it..

OK, so it will definitely fix itself if I reboot again. It's almost like if you try to use something too soon after a reboot it gets hosed. I have no idea what that is, but if I try to use the phone too soon after reboot it seems to have the issue. And the issue stays even if I wait a long time so it's not that it hasn't had enough time to read everything. Very annoying! Original EVO did not have this issue for me.

Well, this time restarting did not fix it. I restarted many times and shutdown. All the apps this is happening to are now shown as com.appname.xxxxx So com.pandora.android or com.google.earth as examples. So the system still has them in the apps downloaded under settings but if you run them it says they are not installed. Will try hard reset and if that doesn't work, back to the Sprint store it will go.

Did you try turning off fast boot? The speed of the fast boot, even during reboot, makes me think that its not a full cold reboot. The way that fast boot works is that it puts the phone in to a low power sleep mode, which some apps have problems with.
Are you sure the app is completely gone? What happens if you go in to the app management menu when the app appears to be missing from the app drawer? I have a problem like this occasionally where stuff disappears from the app drawer for ADW EX, and a restart of the launcher did the trick, which is why a reboot helps for sense, because that does force the launcher to rescan for apps present to repopulate the app drawer.

Are that apps that are disappearing happened to be moved to Phone Storage instead of Internal Storage?

You have to have the card GET formatted by the phone & move the apps using the built-in method .vs Apps2SD.
I think it's more of an ICS thing, I had the same thing happen to music & photos until I did the above.

Yes, fast boot is off. App still appears in the apps under settings as downloaded buy now either has a com. in front or an org. and then the app name etc... I can uninstall it at that point. The shortcut on the desktop just doesn't work and it is missing from the app area of the phone.

Yes, I believe all the apps this is happening with are in phone storage but it does not happen to all apps in phone storage. Many of them are fine.

I did try using only the built-in method the last two times and thought it had fixed the issue. Obviously it did not. I will try formatting the card with the phone before I do the hard reset. The apps are not stored on the card right? Only in internal or phone storage? Or can apps install themselves to the external? I don't see a way to move them. I am not having any issues with photos, music, etc.. on the external.
Can I just copy everything off the card, format it, and then copy it back on? Or should I only copy music, photos, etc.. and not system folders?
Thanks to all you guys for all the help!

OK, now I have erased all data on the card using the phone itself but I do not see anything to format it. Is erasing and preparing all I need to do?

Sense UI Force Closing, Phone Freezing

Just got my HTC Hero, and loving it so far.
However, with VillainROM 12 running at 691MHz, Sense UI seems to force close quite frequently.
Occasionally, the phone actually freezes and becomes totally unresponsive. When this happens, the only way out is to remove the battery.
Do you know anything that could be causing these errors?
Additionally, is there anyway to get an adjustable EQ for my music?
Thanks!
Also, the phone seems to keep damaging the MicroSD card, and I therefore keep having to reformat it. It seems to happen like ever other time I plug the phone into the computer. It's really annoying.
Gratz with your new Hero.
Anyways, did you Wipe everything before installing the ROM?
Could also try to partition the SD Card from the Recovery?

I did wipe everything as per the guides. And I also partitioned the SD card from recovery, once just as a straight FAT partition, and another time with a 512MB partition for Ext2 A2SD.
Really annoying that the card now lost my data again, because I was running A2SD and now all my apps have disappeared.
As such, the "love" has turned into hatred at the moment.
Okay, so it turns out the data is still somehow on the SD card after I booted the phone into Recovery Mode and mounted it that way. So it's just the phone "ignoring" the SD card if you will. It's quite annoying, really.
Update: Looking further into it, my phone was acting as a mass storage device even in "Charge only" mode. So I looked at why on earth it would be doing this and it turned out that there was an option in the DoubleTwist player, where it automatically enabled "Drive mode" regardless of the chosen method.
Could this have been causing my phone to think the card was unformatted?
It could be.
DoubleTwist player is still in BETA stage right?
Anyways, you should try the ROM whitout that player.
In VillianROM 12. i had some stability problems too, but after i updated the Google Maps app from the marked. The ROM worked fine.
Don't know why, but i worked..
Also, I've never had a SD Card problem with that ROM. So it can be that music player that's the problem.

Installed apps disappear

Hi, i'm having a problem with my installed apps. Some apps disappear from my app drawer, and in menu installed apps this apps have a system logo and system name, they are still installed but do not work.
I guess it might have something to do when I disconnect phone from PC USB, apparently internal storage is not mounted back correctly and corrupts apps, some time after the apps go back to original working state, and some others break. Did this happen to anyone? Does anyone have a clue about what's happening?
Many thanks in advance.

Had the same problem and used the same fix
Had the same problem once, restarting phone or launcher fixes the issue...
This problem is also for Galaxy S2.
I think that the problem born because you have 2 sd on the phone.
This problemi in my Atrix is very annoying.
In Titanium Backup, go into Batch>Move/Integrate and make sure that all user apps are on the Internal memory. Chances are your "disappearing" apps are on the external sd.
So if there is any number other than 0 next to "Move user apps to internal memory," run that batch operation, reboot and you shouldn't have the issue. My XDA app installs to external by default, which is stupid, and I have to redo this process for that app after every titanium restore.
Try going to the android market on a laptop or desktop. If you are loved in it will say if it is compatable with your device.
This problem happens often with ADW launcher for me. For some reason the launcher doesn't update its app list instantly and restarting the launcher is needed. I haven't researched the problem though.
It used to happen on my old phone (dell steak) it was not mounting and un mounting properly, even downloads were disapearing no matter what rom. Or computer I tried it still didn't work and it turned out that my SD card was f#$ked

disappearing apps
I noticed this on my Atrix when running Titanium backup. Rebooting the phone will restore the missing apps. If there are a lot of apps missing it may take 2 reboots, but they will come back along with their icons.
I just had to restart the launcher, then all is back.
I had similar problems in the past. My solution = Don't restore apps + data from titanium backup. This also caused 'rogue' apps that prevented my phone from sleeping. Would have to charge my phone at least twice a day. Completely wiped my phone and went back to Wet Dream and haven't used Titanium Backup since. Both issues were fixed.
I had this same problem once I started using jokersax's CM9 alphas. It turned out that, for whatever reason, a few apps were being installed to the SD card. Rebooting the phone or connecting to my PC (basically any time the SD card was mounted/unmounted) would break those apps.
So I can confirm that if the app has disappeared from the app tray, but you can still find it in Manage APPs (with a system icon and probably it's pacakge name (like "com.appname.something")) then your best bet is to uninstall the app, reinstall it, and double check from Manage APPs that it's installed to the phone (bottom right button will say "Move to SD card" rather than "Move to phone").
[tl;dr - apps don't like being on SD card, install to phone]
I've been having this problem for a long time now. Searched the web everywhere, xda, lot's of forums. I have not found a solution to this yet, because i have come the conclusion that it's an internal android problem. This happens to everyone that has many apps on their phone, but they don't realise that it's happening until they look for an app they know that is installed but can't find it.
This happened to me with:
Android:
* stock 2.2
* stock 2.3
* blur mod roms
* cyanogenmod
Launchers:
* Launcher pro
* ADW
* SPB Shell
* Go Laucher
* Blur Launcher
Root:
* When rooted
* When not rooted
It seems that the problem is that the internal drive, when mounting does not take the enough time to mount all of the installed apps, that's why if you plug you phone to the USB, after it get's unmounted and mounted back, the status of your apps change (people who had this problem, know what i'm talking about).
The only solution I found so far is with Cyanogenmod, becuase it's the only rom i tried that has the possibility to unmount the internal drive (as you can always do with the external SD card).
If you have this problem that you check the installed apps in the configuration, and you see that some correctly installed apps have the system icon and not the correct one, the unmount the internal drive and mount back, you will see all apps appearing correctly.

Thanks for the advice!!!
Greetings.
Fast Boot option may be the culprit
This is actually a long-standing problem in Android OS, going back at least two years (donkey's years in this technology!)
Something about the interaction of the OS and an sdcard formated for holding apps creates odd behaviours.
Lots of complicated suggestions have been made, including reformatting sdcard, reinstalling ROMs, changing launchers (the one suggested here) and such.
None of these approaches seems really to solve the problem even in most cases.
Mentioned here is internal phone storage -- I NEVER use it for anything related to apps or downloads (from what I can tell it can be much less reliable than an sdcard and much less portable or capable of being backed up in a timely way). I only use phone memory & sdcard, yet I have the same disappearing app problem everyone else has here. Avoiding apps on sdcard is not an option for me -- my phone memory is too limited for that (and again, I don't trust internal phone storage).
Also, worries about Titanium Backup mentioned here. But other backup apps and ROMS that move apps to sdcard appear to have the same problem. I have had no problems myself with Titanium Backup Pro, but I have experienced disappearing apps after mounting sdcard as a disk when USB cabled to a PC. Others have reported the same. I would bet the problem lies with the mounting process, not backups or ROMs
So ... What seems to be working for me (at least for the last week or so) is the following very simple tweak.
CUT TO THE SOLUTION BELOW -- SEARCH FOR ////
Some (not all) of my apps moved to SD (all by Titanium Backup Pro) have begun to disappear and (sometimes) reappear without warning after I began to add and delete large Virtual Machines created in QEMU from my 16GB SanDisc class 10 microSD card on my HTC Droid Incredible running rooted stock Verizon Android Froyo 2.2.3. I know this thread is far from my phone's "home base", but from what I can tell this problem with disappearing apps located on an sdcard is NOT determined by hardware or even Android version.
I also happen to use LauncherPro by Federico Carnales instead of the built-in HTC Sense launcher. I noted elsewhere on XDA that a user had suggested that because at least some (maybe all) launchers start before the SD Card that this may be a problem, especially if changes are made to the sdcard that the launcher did not perform, or was not active during their performance by other apps such as Titanium Backup. That fits my situation, because I unmounted the SD, physically removed it to a PC, and added/deleted large VM files to save (lots) of time. No problems of this sort before I did this, so there must be some connection.
I noted that other users have tried reformatting SD, substituting different brands of SD, using newer/older SD etc. None of these reliably helped. So I skipped these options.
//// The (simple!) solution I tried that SEEMS to work (only time will tell!) is buried in the main Android Settings (accessed from the Menu button while in Home screen). Under "Applications" there is a setting "Fast Boot" that I checked long ago and forgot about (it seemed like a good thing to do at the time). The text warns "Turn off to use some Market apps" (that shows the age of my 2-yr old used phone and Android OS -- ohmygosh!-- because it refers to Market rather than Google Play Store!) Anyway, I unchecked the option and rebooted the phone.
Yes, it took a bit longer to boot (maybe a whole minute!), but after waiting about another minute ALL my home screen apps had normal icons and loaded properly. Titanium Backup Pro batch scenarios confirmed there were no apps in a forced uninstalled state (i.e. I had not done the deed, the system somehow had done it or at least rendered the apps "invisible" to Titanium, which decided they needed reinstallation).
The only odd behaviour was that auto brightness was turned off after I unchecked Fast Boot and rebooted. Going into Android Settings > Display and rechecking "auto brightness" took care of that. No other oddities or strange behaviours thus far (but it has only been about an hour).
I will report anything further on this thread only (Samsung Fascinate > Fascinate Q&A > What just happend? apps on sdcard) if anything else requires reporting. Silence implies success!
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873670
(I am copying this post to other relevant threads, but will not post anything further elsewhere -- only there. This is a bit arbitrary (especially now that the chosen thread no longer is the most recent active one on this topic), but I hope this approach pleases the XDA sysops/admins) :angel:

I have not posted it here but before I forgot. I have found an app that has solved this issue at least the 95% of the time. Also if an app disappears, reboot, when comes back, move to internal and back to sd with this app, always. This app moves apps differently from other app2sd's apps.
It's called link2sd.
Can be found in Google play store and XDA forum.
A great life saver, for an unsolvable problem. Not the super solution, but the best I found so far.

Google play music app

My music is currently saved on my external SD card. Every time I restart my phone, my music does not show up in the Google music app. I have to uninstall then reinstall the app for it to show in the app again. Does any one know why this happens and how I can fix it? I'm rooted but locked.

I have this same problem all i do is go to app settings and clear the apps data and force stop. Works for me but i don't think there is a fix.
I highly doubt this is a fix, but do you have download songs wifi only checked? When I unchecked that all my songs were deleted a couple of times. But after a while it started to work again. I dunno but you might want to try changing that and seeing if it fixes it

This is what pissed me off most about this phone.
Solution:
everyones best bet is to do the sd card mount swap.
if u didn't root, this is the biggest reason to. This switches the places of the 10 GB phone storage and your sd card. there are 2 threads about this in our development section. Find my post in either one of the threads and follow the directions.
I am even now so sick of the sd card not getting mounted on boot. But oh well cause I only use that 10 GB for ps1 games now. I decided to fill it with the most useless, replaceable files that took up a lot of space on the sd card.how they partitioned, and handled storage space on this phone is HORRIBLE.
This is the best solution, but u are still going to end up dealing with the 10 GB of space not mounting almost every time u start the phone. But u can just go remount it in settings. And I almost never have to do that cause I filled the space with ps1 games and only have to mount it when I play fpse.
Everything I just said is all over the place but go find the threads in development, I wrote everything much clearer.

[Q/Help] CM9 forced reboots

Running current supermaster34's CM9 on gpy70 international 5.0, coming from his remixics. Device reboots anytime I try to access the applications AND the storage sections of the main menu. I have no apps installed on my external which is the culprit for some people. I cannot even try to erase app data because it reboots. Task manager apps also shut the system down. I've done several full wipes/clean installs, tried dirty flashes as well with no luck. Did not have this issue on remix.
Driving me nuts, any ideas? Could my titanium restore from my external have some part in this (can't see why)? What is accessing my external that's causing this? Is it my media? At a loss, any help would be awesome.

You can use titanium backup to wipe app data. I'll have to test this on or after wednesday as I'm pretty busy until then. I guess you could use titanium backup for app management for the time being while I check out this bug. Seeing as the issue doesn't occur on RemICS-UX then it might be worth sticking to that for a bit

Ok, new development on this issue. Apparently this has something to do with restoring apps from titanium, or atleast the shock to the system of all those apps being put back at once. So I wiped again and reinstalled, checked the application and storage menus and there was NO force close. However, after I restored my apps from titanium....bam, force reboots in both of those options in the settings menu. So then I tried removing my T backup from my external to my internal and did the whole thing over again...same result - force reboots. What I think is happening is that the system is locking up trying to read all of that data just thrown into the mix all at once. Would make sense being that both the application and storage sections both have the same reboot issue. Oh, and I also tried this on remixics with the same result, before when I mentioned that it did not happen in remix was inaccurate due to the fact that I never did a Titanium restore on remix.
So now what? What could be causing this? Is it possible that something is trying to access the external and causing the already known reboot? But what would explain the storage section menu doing the same thing? That's not a reported issue that I have heard of, as well as any task manager causing a reboot.
I know your busy, not pushing at all, just reporting what I am finding as I find it. Thanks again, SM34

[Q] Apps FC when connecting to computer via USB Mass Storage in CM10

Hello Folks! I've been lurking these forums for a few months now, but now it's time to join up! You guys are awesome.
I've got a question relating to the CM10 A2 ROM. Install went smoothly from a fresh SBF/Root/Flash. I got all my applications installed and moved them all to the phone. I have a problem that occurs when connecting the phone to my computer via USB. If I leave it in charge mode, no problem. Upon clicking the option to allow USB Mass Storage, I get quite a few apps that FC. The list is as follows:
sManager
AutomateIt Pro
App Protector Pro
ROM Toolbox Pro
TiBu
I get popup notifications that the apps' processes have stopped and upon going to the app drawer, the icons have been replaced with the Android Robot. The problem persists after disabling mass storage and the apps FC on attempting to launch them. The only thing to fix them seems to be rebooting. I know each of these apps have permission req's that read/write the SD card, is that what is causing the problem? Any way to fix? Thanks a bunch!

I cant think of any other reason why they would stop working in USB mode. Maybe there are certain things they use that are on the SD Card and not necessarily the app itself. It does warn you that some apps will not work when you select USB mode.
IMHO I think it has something to do with the new SD card directory. I've used almost all the ROMs for the x2 including the cm7 and cm9. This seems to only occur with cm10.
Edit: I noticed some of these apps have folders located on the internal SD. I doubt that has changed across ROM's, any idea why it would change with this one?
Sent from my MB870 using xda app-developers app
Alright. So it appears that the problem is caused by a new way the play store distributes paid apps to JB. From reading around in various sites, these apps are sent to the "app-asec" folder as .asec files instead of .apk. When connecting to USB, CM10 seems to go through some internal trouble (i.e. lots of screen flickering/redrawing and sometimes it seems to soft reboot). My theory is that how the play store is installing is causing the issues app developers are seeing. The app is attempting to start before the app-asec folder is mounted, causing FC's.
Edit: Other users have reported a workaround that if you restore the apps with TiBu or something similar it places the actual .apk file in the correct directory. The issue only seems to affect paid apps installed by the play store.

Sorry to keep posting on my own thread, but I've found a workaround. This also seems to have fixed the launcher redraws and screen flickering I mentioned above.
Navigate to the /data/app-sec folder
Make note of all the apps installed there as .asec files.
Using your backup program of choice (I used TiBu for the majority and ROM Toolbox so I could backup TiBu), backup all the apps you found.
Uninstall the previously mentioned apps.
Restore using the same backup program(s).
Go back to the /data/app-sec folder and verify that all the files are gone.
Go to /data/app folder and you should see the .apk's from the restored apps.
Hope this helps someone else!

Good to see you figured it out and also, good find. I noticed plugging in my device as USB and having it "soft reboot". Lately I haven't had the issue happen again. Your theory makes sense now since there is one app in that location and it is a theme I was using but lately, have not been. Ill move it as you suggested.
