I'm having a really strange problem with my Samsung Galaxy S3.
My phone is not announcing when I get a text message, with the sound I've selected. It just stays silent, and the blue led starts flashing.
The phone volume on the clicker is all the way up. In settings>sound I have:
Silent mode: Off
Volume: All four are 3/4 or above
Default notifications: Whistle
Sound and vibration: Ticked
I'm getting all the other sounds from the device, just not the text message one. It's weird. Please help!

there's a seperate message notification setting in the message app. open your message app and hit menu>settings and there's an option in there. select different ones to make sure they play.

The only one I can see is at the bottom: Notification settings. It is ticked, and the notification plays.

I have installed a lot of stuff.
This was the same for me but i got it sorted today. went in to messaging then settings from here. that brings up messaging settings. Scroll to the the bottom and untick the notifications box, then restart the phone. When it boots back up go in to the messaging settings again, tick the notification box and choose your msg tone and it should work. Did for me!
I, too, have got it sorted. I hadn't got the notification icon activated from the top drop down bar.

factory reset or you reinstalled the rom? I have no sound either.
I've just uninstalled Handcent and I get no notification sound now when I receive a message, neither do I get a preview of the new message in the drop down bar. The phone only turns on the screen for a second, vibrates, and goes dark again.
What the hell did Handcent break?
I tried the suggestion regarding unticking notifications in messaging, restarting, and enabling again... didnt work.
I also tried to restart once more, no dice.
Anyone got a clue whats going on?
Running rootes stock Rogers rom...

Hey!
OK, I got it figured out...... If this is happening to you, go to the App Manager, then Messaging, make sure that 'Show Notifications' is ticked!
Seems LOTS of people are having this trouble, some go as far as factory resetting the phone.

Hello,
When I receive a notification for a reminder i have set in Google Now, I can swipe it away on my watch but it remains present and blinking on my phone. Any other message or card that I dismiss on the phone is removed correctly from the phone tho.
Is this supposed to be? Anyone else noticed this?

I tried this and I don't have any issues. For me it correctly gets dismissed on the watch and the phone like any other notification. I have a Nexus 5 on stock 4.4.4.
Meh weird.. just tried it again "remind me to do this then", notification pops up at the correct time, i dismiss it on the watch, keeps blinking on the phone and remains in the notification bar...
Happens to me too
Any way to turn off Auto Call forwarding if you have a standalone device. The stupid yellow notification stays in the upper left-hand corner of the watch face and I cant get rid of it....any ideas?

Presumably you have tried Gear - settings - call - auto call forwarding??

Yes esseff, that's the first place I looked but the option to turn off will not uncheck. I instead get the error message that I must reconnect to a bluetooth device to turn it off. Being a standalone device, which I stated above I obviously can not do so....that's why I was looking for a work around. Thanks for the help though!
I've searched everywhere on how to do this but can't find anything -- When your screen is off and you get a text the screen turns on...Where is the setting to turn this off??? My notification LED is enough for me to know I have a message, don't need my screen always turning on.

I don't have my edge yet, in the mail so I can't tell you on the stock messenger app, but on my current phone i use the app Textra (which is great, I highly recommend trying it out) and in the notification settings there is an option specifically for this. Can set it to turn the screen on when receiving a text or leaving it off. there is also an option to turn the screen on except when the phone is set to silent.

I just posted this same question, I've turned off the setting in the message app to "turn off pop up display" but the screen still turns on with a pop up message...I don't know what's going on lol.
I've been through the settings a dozen times. There doesn't seem to be a way to stop this from happening on stock messenger. I can confirm that using a 3rd party (I use go sms) stops it from happening once you set it as default messenger.

Yeah. I ended up getting Textra before you posted this - liking the customizable options so far. I've always used GoSMS in the past and Hangouts but this one is a bit cleaner.

Double confirming this. With Samsung's Messages app the screen turns on for me, as it did when I had the S3, though it's more bearable now that I can unlock the S6 with my fingerprint. Using Verizon's Message+ screen does not turn on. This is really the only strike against Messages for me. Message+ is a little more sophisticated, but not as clean looking. I think I still prefer Messages because it's cleaner and I like the vibration notification better (two short bursts instead of one long). Again, the screen turning on isn't a deal breaker for me because the phone stays locked without my fingerprint.
solution
This issue is because Samsung put in their own text messenger called messages rather than using the Google made one called messenger while using the same icon. You can download the original messenger off of the Google Play Store just search messenger and look for the one by Google. Once you switch to the one by Google that should not turn your screen on anymore, you may have to change a setting to make it that way. Since I installed it haven't had the issue at all.

go on to notification settings, scroll to messages, turn off allow notifications.
then go on messages app. click more then settings then notifications and turn the setting off.
the screen will no longer light up when you get a message.
the LED will flash though so you know. also if you use nova you can set the badge app notification so it will show when you receive a message but again the screen will stay off.

I bet what you're dealing with was my problem too. I would send a text, turn the screen off but leave the messaging app up and then when they responded the screen would come back on and the phone would think I read the message since it opened right back up to the same conversation. The only way for me to fix this was to turn instant lock on so when the screen came back on it went to the lock screen instead of completley turning on the phone. This is a stupid feature from Samsung IMO and they have always done it.. Problem is that I like their messaging app (especially the quick reply and favorites at the top) so I don't want ot switch to something else... hoping someone comes out w/ a modded app like they have on other Galaxy's. Just not sure if I'll be able to install it since I have the Verizon varient and likely will never get root.

hmmm. one thing ive noticed is my watch would get notifcations and wouldn't vibrate if i didn't have the app set to vibrate on my phone. IE Bleacher Report is silent on my phone so I get a card but no vibrate on my watch. not sure if it's supposed to be like this though as I'm new to android wear.
Guys I think I've figured this out!
Okay so my text my messages are set to vibrate only but I only get the vibrate on my watch if I have a ringtone set. If its on silent it won't work.
SOLUTION:
To fix this set your default text messaging app's notification to "default notification sound" and your main notification sound under your phones main settings to "silent" ever since then my watch vibrates and the screen lights up every time!
When I receive text message, the phone but nothing shows up the screen.
Then when I turn the screen on, then I am able to see the message.
Is this normal or is there some setting that I screwed up with>

Check the settings in your text messaging app. Some of them give you options for what happens when you get an incoming message. Some don't give a heads up notification if the screen is off.
If you have not made any changes whatsoever and your phone is just fresh out the box I would say that that's a problem and would return the phone 4 Exchange
Do you want the screen to turn on when you get a text message? There is a setting called ambient display that will turn your screen on when you get a message. If that setting isn't activated your phone will vibrate or make your notification sound and blink the led but will not activate the screen.
