This is mainly a placeholder as I haven't yet started development, but I am going to make a custom kernel for the Xperia U.
I have plenty of experience creating custom kernels, to list a few:
Darkforest Kernel GB - Xperia Play
Darkforest Kernel ICS - Play
KeiCS Kernel ICS CM9 AOKP MIUIv4 AOSP KERNEL - Play
DarkMIUI Kernel - MIUI GB Kernel
Wildfire ICS Kernel - HTC Wildfire
And a few ROMs too.
I only work with one device, so you will have my full development attention when I get the device in three or four month.
When Sony kernel sources are released, I will start development,
Keiran

nice! if i may ask for one more thing, and this one would probably be tough, but would we be able to change the partition sizes of the internal memory? 2gb for system and 2gb for apps seems like waaay to much 1gb or even 500mb for system and 1gb for app data would be more than enough....would we be able to change it from kernel?
Keiran i may follow you to the U when dont get the sola. =)

would changing the partition sizes be possible? also, when using usb otg, if the device sucks up too much power when plugged in, an error pops up saying device consumes too much power, and it cannot be used. would you be able to remove the limitation?

I hope there is development about rooting without unlocking bootloader
But I'll wait till your kernel released, I'll unlock my xu no matter if the warranty will be void.

Just wait a week. Official MIUI based on ICS will be released for the Arc, and will likely be ported to the Neo too within another week.
Check out Zdunex25's thread in the Arc forum.

Here we have the Xperia Play port of the official ICS ROM from Sony!
Thanks go to expeacer & kamarush for their mini pro port which this is based on.
It is still a work in progress.. network signal is not working just yet.
Everything else does work to my knowledge..
Please post any bugs you have.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. FLASH SONY ICS BETA USING FASTBOOT (SYSTEM.IMG + USERDATA.IMG)
2. FLASH DOOMKERNEL ICS v2
3. FLASH .70 BASEBAND USING FLASHTOOL
4. INSTALL .ZIP FROM SD CARD
5. REBOOT & ENJOY
(FIRST BOOT TAKES AROUND 10MINS!!)
___________________________________________________________________
DOWNLOAD ROM:http://www.sendspace.com/file/4f8b2f
USE DOOMKERNEL FOR ICS BETA:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1573184
You have to use the .70 baseband - flash this FTF with flashtool:http://www.wuala.com/ExPeacer/4.1.A.0.562/XPERIA_2011_4.1.A.0.562_Baseband.ftf
Previous basebands such as -36 or -64 will NOT work.
I will work on this more over the weekend.
If anyone can get signal working please let me know,
I think its a problem with the .70 baseband
Click thanks if you like it!
Hi Pricey,
This is great to see so many developers working on various ROMS.
Can you let us know what differences would it be compared to ICS++, DarkForest, KA12?
I know this is not a rite one because each has it's own customization, my question is whether it is geared towards High performance gaming or good eye candy...

If he got it from the arc then it certainly is NOT the same rom Sony will be giving us. I was under the impression that Sony was making plenty of PLAY specific tweaks to ICS to make using the control pad and playing games just as smooth as gingerbread.
Its a port from the xperia mini pro..
Thanks to expeacer & kamarush for their port
Im waiting. What time will be ready this rom ? (Sorry for bad english )

There is just no reason. The u8500 board is very new in the Android world, and we'll need to do a lot to add required HAL and kernel bits. If we do it now with CM7, we'll have to forward port all the changes to ICS very soon, and that's also a lot of work.

And before someone asks why, it's because they use the same NovaThor U8500 platform, and because of that, much of the code for kernel drivers etc can be used on all of these nice little devices.

Well that sucks.. If my memory serves me well while I had my handset prior to my XPU, in a time before
a bootloader unlock for the device was finaly found we had Cyanogen Mod et al. with OC capabilities
etc (p.s. this was on the Sony X10 Mini), we did not gain custom kernel support untill much later on.
There is porbably a way around it..
Kind regards

Canonical released Ubuntu sources for NEXUS phones last day.
And the portal says "Porting Ubuntu Touch is as Simple as Building CM". I think Ubuntu Touch can be built based on CM10 for XPERIA devices.
Reference : http://www.xda-developers.com/android/porting-ubuntu-touch-is-as-simple-as-building-cm/
There would be a lot of support if any of the Developer would kick-start this project.
We NXT guys were discussing over it yesterday....
1.We need a cm 10.1 to use as base, which we have but its still a bit unstable.
2. We need a 3.4 Kernel to get the best user experience and performance or else it will be more like miui jb! (lags a lot!!)
3. The version released right now is just a dev preview, hence many features aren't working on it yet!
In the end we all decided that we will port a better version! Which won't be long as the ubuntu devs will give updates fast cause they wanna make it the best os for every platform as they said at CES!
Thus, we will wait

Yup, its just Dev Preview, lot of things aren't working as I seen in most of the Videos out there. Ubuntu is collaborating with XDA Devs to make it work on different phones.
It just needs CM10 as base (I mistakenly wrote CM9 too which now corrected). Lot of devices are on the way for the build including SONY XPERIA T (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices).
Hope to see Ubuntu Touch Build from you.

Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure that it was 10.1 and not 10 !
However we still need a 3.+ kernel for best performance!
