[Q] Is it possible to unlock my phone without another SIM card? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an HTC Inspire 4G that I'm trying to unlock (because a buyer wanted it unlocked) and I called AT&T and they gave me the code to get it unlocked, but I don't have a T-Mobile (or any other company) SIM card that I can use to enter the code.
Is there any way to use the code without using another SIM card?
Also, will the code expire?

No, to use the simlock code you need another SIM card (your buyer can lend you one, I think).
The code doesn't expires.

Well he lives in Canada, so I guess I could just send him the code along with the phone. He said he was having some trouble with his carrier, so I didn't want the code to expire before he could use it. Thanks for the info!
Does it need internet access to unlock it?

Does it have to be an active SIM card? Like if somebody here at XDA sent me an old T-Mobile SIM card (that didn't have service anymore), would that let me enter the code and unlock it?

I'm not sure, but I think yes. The SIM card of another carrier is for the phone asks for the unlock code, so I think that it works without service.

O2 recently sent me an unlock code, but I only have O2 sim cards, so I went over to the t-mobile site and just ordered a free sim from them

I tried that, but it wouldn't give me a free SIM card without signing up for a contract.
I ended up just buying some no-name SIM card on Amazon for $0.66 shipped.

Well I got my $.66 SIM card from Amazon and I put it in...and it doesn't request an unlock code. It even says up at the top (where it normally says AT&T) "Simple Mobile".
What do I do??

Question about Thunderbolt SIM Card

I plan on selling my brand new, unopened Thunderbolt. I haven't even activated the phone yet or opened the SIM card.
It's been a while since I've dealt with SIM cards (been on Verizon for over 10 years). Question is, when is the SIM card linked to my phone number? Only when I activate the phone with the SIM card in the phone?
Can I call Verizon and tell them I won't be activating the phone on my account rather than activating then dis-activating?
well if you used an upgrade to get the phone then you only need to accept the customer agreement and contract. the phone itself does not need to be activated. in fact if u do the automated phone activation after you agree to the TOS it asks if you want to activate ur phone now or later. just pick later.
Yes, i used my upgrade.
So if i simply agree to the TOS and don't activate the phone, there should be no problem with selling the phone with the sim card?

The sim is useless, it is tied to your phone number only. So if you sell the phone so be it, the new owner can get a sim from verizon for free for the time being.
Well, like i said, i haven't opened the sim card yet, so it's not associated with any phone number yet. I called verizon to verify.
So yes the sim card is not worth much because you can get one from verizon, for free?....not sure about that but I'm guesting it wouldn't be much.

Pretty sure they scan and assign your sim card as it leaves their warehouse. But try it let us know how it goes.
I also believe the sim is assigned to your number. If you sell it with the phone and the buyer activates it, it might transfer your number to that phone. Sounds like it could be a mess. If I were you I would keep the sim card.
I can assure u that the sim card is free

All sim cards are blank until they are activated.

that is correct. My grandma has an account and doesn't use upgrades ever so i used her upgrade, agreed to the contract extension but never activated the phone on her account. then i simply called 611 and activated it on my line and only then did i stick the sim card in.
The SIM card is not tied to anything until you activate it on your phone. You are free to sell it with your phone as long as you have not activated it by calling Verizon, putting the SIM card ID into Verizon's website, or getting it activated on the store.
I'm pretty sure that Verizon will just give you another one if you ask.

So the card is not scanned and linked to the account once it leaves the warehouse (as some have alluded)?

Yea i think we were wrong about that...i was talking to a csr person on the phone...said i would need to call back when i get a new sim card...so i can phone swap....so it must not be tied to the line per se until you place it in your phone and power it up for the first time
The sim card is basically the phone... And the phone itself is the shell. I learned that first hand because of a dumb ass at best buy. I used an upgrade on my account for a different number, and I told him that and he put a different number on my SIM card AND used the wrong upgrade.

use X10a without SIM

S'up guys, just won my boss's X10, its locked on Rogers and I already own 2 Android based phones.
I'd like to know if there is a way to use it as a media player/web browser (my son would love to play with this one!) without the sim card or without paying for an unlock code??
I heard of te "bootloader bypass", can this be a solution for me??
Well, can't you remove SIM card and turn it on?
No it wont work that way. i had rogers locked x10. it will show u imergency dial pad only. u need unlocked phone as per i know.
Search the market for wosim. Will do exactly what u want

My unbranded and SIM locked Xperia X8 works without SIM card. Maybe Rogers' branding disables functionality without SIM? Try flashing generic firmware.
Ok, wosim...... all writen in chinese.......
For flashing generic OS, dont I need access to the phone first???
buy a sim card and just don't set it up.....
buying a rogers sim is more expensive that unlocking codes.........??

Unless it changed by a new method, you need a SIM card from another network to unlock it anyways no? Get one on eBay from AT&T for a dollar if you want to unlock it.
Wosim worked like a charm, thx kieronw3
Sim cards are only like 5 or ten bucks

Thx alot for all your help!

How to unlock with only att sim card...?

So I have a sim unlock code I paid for, but there doesn't seem anyway to input the code unless there's a non ATT simcard already in the phone???? Even my old Nokia e71x didn't have this limitation.... If anyone else has done this in the US, can you please share how you went about unlocking your atrix?
I havent SIM unlocked my Atrix, but couldnt you just pick up a T-Mobile pay as you go sim card and use that? They're only $7.

I agree....or just borrow someone's sim for a min...
I suppose I could buy the sim for another $7, but that's really inconvenient.

Its my old sim card but I dont think its asking for the sim lock code. its asking for the "SIM NETWORK Unlock Code"
Have you finally found the way to unlock sim network lock? I've bought my Tablet S from Japan and it's sim network locked. I can't find any solution at the moment. Please let me know, if you found the way. Thank you!

Nope, I called em and asked.. they said look for a third party as its illegal for em to give the code to me.,
there where number generators back in the old sim unlocking days, you need imei, phone type, and serviceprovider where the tablet came with.
Dont know if they still make that kind of generators but you can always try

Come on it's totally rubbish!! they should be able to give you the code upon you providing them with identification! This is what service providers doing here and I got my forgotten sim unlock code once from 3. The code prevents improper/unauthorized use, e.g. someone stole your phone and put the sim card in his own mobile phone.
Or you can try reporting loss of your sim card and ask for replacement card with the unlock code.
Hope this information helps.

Thank you for your advice. I think you misunderstand here. We are not talking about 4-digit "PIN Code". We are talking about "SIM Network Unlock Code" which is locked by a provider who don't want us to use other provider's sim card with the phone.

I know it's not the 4 digit PIN Code. Misunderstanding maybe. Here we only have two unlock code set by the service providers, the first one is as described in my previous post, the other is the device unlock code to lock the phone and will only be disclosed upon contract expiry (some service provider will not provide this code to clients but simply unlock the phone upon contract expiry).

Thank you again for the suggestion. I think it's difficult in my case because I bought the Tablet from Japan but I'm using it in Thailand. So, I might try to contact DOCOMO to ask for sim network unlock code.

Same thing here, Mine is also from japan and locked to docomo. I saw this site that unlocks the device it costs $64

I have sim-unlock code. Anyway to do it without a sim card installed?

So AT&T provided me with the unlock code but it isn't very easy to come by a nano sim from another carrier. Can it be done without the sim card installed at all?

Not that I am aware.
Maybe go to another carrier's store, and ask to use one of their SIMs for a couple minutes? If you tell them why, I would think they wouldn't mind doing it.
Maybe offer to buy them a coffee or something!
I had the same problem with a HTC One M7 just off contract. ATT gave the unlock code but I didn't have the "other sim", went to a Verizon store, gave my story and bought a sim for $2.00, well worth it. Unlocked just fine . Also if your around a Walmart, I understand they sell prepaid sim packets for about $10 maybe one of those might work .
