in recovery-mode should i delete user data or cache data ? after boot up the only thing that moves is the pull down menu but no response from it at all.
i have put the root update zip in place but reluctant to root..
I would recommend using Odin to get back to stock. Then get root using your update.zip file and hopefully you have a backup with Titanium backup to restore.
Let me know if you need any of the applications as I have them saved just in case.
What app was it? Are you able to uninstall it ? Also, if you can get there, try resetting your phone to factory. That might clear it up. If not , try ODIN, here's the tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=810130

it was a livewallpaper app that had screensaver attatched to it, but it was not in the livewallpaper folder.it wanted permission like a launcher and when i gave it it locked my phone up..my task manager wont kill it.it's some sort of malware im sure..i have odin on my pc but never backed the phone up..never rooted
The best part about root is Titanium Backup. I had root for a while before running any roms etc just to be able to backup all my texts, apps and settings. It paid off when the JI6 OTA soft bricked my phone and I had to Odin to stock.
My wife just received a x2 as a replacement for her x. It has froyo on it, if I root it to restore some apps with ti backup from a previous back up, and then do the gb ota will there be any problems other than losing root.

If I understand correctly you will not be able to use titanium backup to restore what you back up if you lose root, so backing up seems like a waste

You should sbf back to Froyo and update to gingerbread pre-root if you don't wish to lose app data.

Haven't done the ota yet, still running froyo. Was going to, root, restore some apps that are no longer available in the market, and then ota. She does not care about having a rooted phone, she just doesnt wamt to lose those apps. If I knew how to pull them from the phone I would just do that, but I'm no developer. They're books mostly. I have a thundercrap, so I'm not that familiar with the moto stuff.
Titanium Backup is a root app. If you backup with Titanium backup, do the OTA to GB and lose root how do you plan on restoring what you backed up?
Like EvilTim said earlier, what is the sense of backing up if you do not plan on running GB rooted?
Already have a backup from old phone, am going to use old sd card and restore from ti before I do the ota. I just want to make sure if I do the ota over a rooted froyo all that will happen is lose root. On the tbolt if you flash an ota over some rooted roms it will brick you, and I don't want that to happen. If this won't work can someone tell me how to pull a market downloaded app from the phone so it can be installed on the new phone. I have root explorer on the old phone if that helps.
Verizon recommends you do a factory reset before upgrading, while this may not be necessary, if you encounter an issue after upgrading you will most likely have to sbf and start over

I have never done a factory reset before an ota, but that's a new one to me. This was somewhat helpful, I think ill just tell her it's not possible to save it.
what apps is she trying to save? if it's not available in the market, you can always find the apk on the net. if it's books, save the books from your sd card to your hd and then put them back on the sd card after you update to gb.
It doesn't seem people are understanding what your're asking.
If you have a rooted Froyo phone you can restore a Titanium backup of apps from another phone (using that phone's SD card). Then you can do an OTA update to Gingerbread. Those apps will still be available, but you will lose root.
You may want to use P3's rooted GB though... there may be other apps she wants to backup/restore in the future with Titanium.

I'm pretty sure that in order to restore those apps into the new GB phone, you'll need root. Titanium Backup will not run without root, as it needs to make changes to both system files and permissions.
It didn't work, exactly. However, I improvised. By going into the ti backup directory and going through the files I extracted the apk files and that turned then them into installable apks. Lost the data, so games were started from beginning, but they were installed.

So, you're saying you restored the files to a rooted 2.2.2 phone and then did an OTA update to 2.3.3? That should work for keeping apps.
If you didn't restore before going to OTA 2.3.3 then I don't think Titanium would work for you.

Im trying to do the OTA update to gingerbread on a rooted Droid 2 Global. I have removed a lot of bloatware on there, restored some, but the update is still failing every time. Id rather not flash back to stock as I dont want to lose my contacts, pics, etc... is there a way how I can see what the update is failing on? Or, alternatively, how can I backup all my data and restore it in gingerbread?

Contacts can be sync in using gmail, picture is saved in SD. OTA normally for unrooted phone. You can the titanium backup to backup and restore your Apps.

If you are rooted the OTA update from verizon wont work. You would have to SBF to froyo and then do the update.
You can download pre-rooted SBF files from team black hat that will get you around the problem also. They have an app on the market where you can download them.
So my droid razr updated today and it appears to have unrooted itself. I have tried running doomlord's unroot program followed by his root program to re-root my phone and it has failed. Additionally, some of the apps that come stock are not located in the apps menu anymore. Prior to the update, I used Titanium to freeze (not remove) these apps and neglected to unfreeze them before the update. These same apps cannot be unfrozen now because I don't have access to titanium because my phone has become unrooted. Please help. If you require more information, don't hesitate to ask.

I'd like to update to MI1 but I get an error after the update is downloaded when it tries to install.
Before I try anything, I'd like to get some advice on how to restore the bloat I'd deleted....
Will a regular factory restore do it?
Any advice on the best way to fix so I can take the OTA?

You will need a copy of all the factory file you removed.
You can then use root explorer or es file explorer to put them back.
No a factory restore doesn't do it. It only wipes settings and does not restore deleted stuff.
