[Q] Wifi causing battery drain (15%/hr) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
For the last month or so I have been unable to use wifi because it drains my battery too fast. I have had this problem with Litening rom 3.1-2, Sensation Rom, running the stock rom, using stock kernels, litening kernel, siyah... I have no idea what else to try. I have wiped data, all of the caches, reflashed, bricked, fixed the brick, and still dont know what to do. Does anyone have any advice?
Thank you in advance.

Given everything you've tried, that's obviously a router issue. Maybe update your router firmware or try another router. Definitely not a phone issue. There's something in your router settings causing it, you could also do a factory reset on the router as well (make a note of all your settings first) & remove all encryption, then add back settings one by one in order to try and isolate what's causing it.

I dont have a problem with my computer or any other devices on my home router. And the phone has battery drain when wifi is on, not necessarily connected even... The one thought i had that might be connected to my home router is that it disconnects and reconnects every 5 seconds when on my home router.

Try this...on your wifi settings go to Advanced then on Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep. choose Only when plugged in or Never. This will turn-off your wifi when your phone is sleeping.
Also, the drain can be caused by other applications not necessarily your wifi. Use BetterBatteryStats to check the wakelocks.

This is from the fluxi kernel thread:::
Q: Wakelocks "wlan_rx_wake" wake up my device constantly what I can do about it?
A: The problem is neither Android nor the kernel, but the router and the (Windows7) network. In the network properties, uncheck "IPv6", disable the service "IP Helper", "Shell Hardware Detection" and "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service", which provide ongoing Traffic. Then they scored again 98% of deep sleep.

Have You tried a ICS 4.0.4 CM9 nightly??? They are very stable and muuuuuch better than the stock ROMs. I've got WiFi on all the time and still can reach over a 24hrs with screen on for aprox. 4hrs..... Maybe this will work for You.

Im gonna try this next. But why do you think that the problem only just started in May? Ive had the same router set up since November...

[Q] WiFi intermittent

Since unlocking and rooting my Rez, my wifi works intermittently. I have the stock ROM and Sense 3.5.
At least once every day, none of the programs using a wifi connection will work--weather, internet, etc. The status bar shows a strong wifi signal but nothing will connect. The only way to get it working again is to toggle the wifi off and then back on again. Then it works again for awhile.
Any thoughts about how to resolve this situation?
check router settings, restart router, check phone wifi settings in case you want to fine tune the sleep options. if problem still occurs then backup your data, wipe everything except external, reflash and you should be good
if I helped then hit the "thanks" option

Tried your recommendations but it is still doing the same thing.
Any other suggestions?
well if did a clean install after a wipe then either your wifi is borked or you didn't reset your router by unplugging it for a minute. might be your router depending on age and wear/tear

I did power off the wi-fi and it does work on the wi-fi. It just goes off for some reason. Again, if I toggle off the wi-fi and then toggle back on, it might work for several hours before it doesn't work again. Also, it shows full signal strength in the status bar. Then, toggle off and back on and I'm good to go again for several hours.
I'm having this exact same issue so it doesn't seem to be isolated to just your phone. However, to get my wifi working again I actually need to reboot the phone as turning the wifi off and on again doesn't resolve the connectivity problem for me. I'm curious as to what would cause this, my roommate also has the Rezound using the current ICS leak, non-rooted (I'm non-rooted as well) and he doesn't seem to have any issues with his wifi connection.
FYI for me it isn't isolated to just one wifi network, happens to me on any wifi network I try so it seems to be directly related to the phone and not a router config problem.
What type of security settings are you using on your router? I used to have the same problems that you are having until I changed it to WEP.

Yuk... that really can't be the issue... if it is, you need to replace your router.
Stock Rom and everything I connect to is WPA2 without issues.
Occasionally the phone drops WiFi (like it gets turned off), but then it is using 3G/4G. Not sure why it does that, but it does. Doesn't prevent data access unless you have to 3G/4G access at the time. It doesn't do what the OP is reporting though.

Braking connection via WiFi and freeze on lockscreen caused by WiFi

Hello,
I became a proud owner of S3. As it usually happens to me there is the problem. Namely, from time to time problem happens to me when I'm using any web browser or anything that requires an Internet connection. Say for example Opera. I'm browsing pages and suddenly ... BOOM ... 3-5 second pause in the connection over WiFi (energy saving is off and in WiFi settings - I did it via code, in the service menu). Sometimes Internet connection breaks when I'm browsing menu or writing an SMS. For example: I browse the menu and suddenly I see - WiFi stamp disappears and after a while there is info about that phone is connected again. This is the first problem.
The phone is lying, WiFi operates in the background. When I Pick up the phone and when I'm clicking home (or power) button I get the lock screen and. .. freeze. Phone is disconnected from WiFi and only time the phone reconnects to WiFi I can unlock the screen.
On what ROM were the problems? On the Stock LF2, ROOTed LF2, Omega 7.1 - 9.0 and AOKP Milestone6.
And also it does not work automatic refresh of weather (at 1 h interval) on stock widget (the Samsung weather widget).
Sorry for my bad English.
Why couldn't you have just set your wifi to never turn off in settings, wifi, advanced.....it's practically the same thing....I wouldn't be messing around with the service menu. I would wipe data/factory reset and start again bud but this time, stay away from the service menu as it's for technicians and phone repairs etc I've not once touched the service menu....
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Premium HD app
I found the same problem ever since I upgraded to LH3 (the latest official release at this moment). The lock screen is frozen if: I had the WiFi Switched On, screen off either manually or timeout, then disconnected (say if I walk away from the wifi service area). When I press Power or Home button to wake the device, the lock screen is frozen.
Seems no freeze if wifi remains connected. Seems no freeze if wifi power saving mode is off (disabled via *#0011# (but setting won't stay if unit is power off).
Did both Cache wipe (didn't do factory reset) but makes no difference. Tried "never turn off" also makes no difference (probably because it will turn off anyway when connection is dropped)
The upgrade seems worser than before...
Any hints please...
This seems to be common but not always the same fix, my wifi constantly drops out and reconnects immediately (ruining any downloads/streaming) , i have tried the service mode, factory reset, different kernels, sleep time, static IP's, JB vs ICS Roms / Stock roms, you name it i have tried it and it STILL is doing it. Weird thing is..dont think it dropped out and reconnected when i was stock and unrooted, but as i said, tried stock rom and to no avail
Any ideas?

Hi, I am having the same problem again after not having this problem for a month or 6.
I qas having this problem on my note when on gb and now on cm10.1 but the problem never occured in an custom ics or jb rom.
So I recommend; use a custom ics or jb rom to solve this problem

I have this issue on my galaxy note N7000, and only recently for like a month now and on various different ROMs all JB. Any updates on what the cause could be?
Go full unrooted stock and send the phone in for warranty repair. It's the smartest thing to do if a problem persists after lots of ROM switching and factory resetting.

That's would be the smartest thing to do, indeed. But... Warranty expired centuries ago.
Any clue what is causing this not uncommon problem?

Try visiting a(not crowded) place with public Wi-Fi, and see if the issue persists.
If it starts to work fine, get a new router, preferably with 802.11n support. If you buy a N compatible router, check all of your Wi-Fi capable devices for N support, and if one of them doesn't, make them N compatible(if it's a computer, get a new N compatible Wi-Fi card or USB reciever, if it's something else, well, you can't do anything else other than buying a newer version of it with N support, or not using that device's Wi-Fi feature at all) because your router will operate at an older mode even if one of your devices doesn't support N.

samsung galaxy s3 wifi not auto connect to home network

Please can anyone help.
Up till a couple of days ago my s3 would automatically connect to my wifi signal at home as soon as I walked into my house, haven't changed any thing but it no won't connect until either I reboot or switch wifi off and then back on again . Tried rebooting phone which works for the first connection but subsequently won't connect again after sleep or at least the phone not being used for a while. Also switching wifi off and back on again works but as before once wi fi shuts down it won't reconnect by just swiping the screen and taking the phone off of standby.
Hope that was clear enough lol
Many thanks Ian

Reboot the modem/router and try again. If that doesn`t help press your wifi connection in settings and reinsert the password and reboot.

Yes I've found plenty of things relating to wifi issues on the phone but none specifically to this one so if anyone could help I would be grateful.
I assume you've tried forgetting the network and re-entering the details.
Also try playing with the Wi-Fi sleep policy, in the past this has caused some problems with the stability of the connection. Settings, Wi-Fi, menu, advanced.
Also it might be on the router side. Try changing the channel on the router, and if it's dual band set it to 2.4ghz instead of 5.

Back up data. Factory reset.
Update firmware.
Change kernel.
That's three possible fixes.

I cannot seem to get the WIFI Sleep to work at all. Even when set to NEVER on when asleep I can see in the battery stats that WIFI has stayed on the entire time. Any idea why this is?
can you tell us the ROM and kernel you are using (if you are using custom)? I have never had any issues with stock kernel myself.
also, did you hide your wifi SSID? in the past, it might cause some issues...

I was having the same problem, try this.. Setting - wifi - advanced - keep wifi on during sleep - Always.
I haven't noticed more battery use,

if you want another option besides backing up your data, doing a full wipe, and reloading your data, try a different kernel...easy fix that seems to fix these problems most of the time...the kernel is responsible for your wifi, gps, bluetooth, cpu, gpu, etc...so swapping it out should fix an issue like that

Losing network signal while charging

I use a lot of internet sharing (wireless). I noticed that when I start charging battery my phone is dropping signal network after a while. When I switch the screen back on, signal comes back. it's very annoying and it doesn't happen when phone is not charging. At first I thought its rom/kernel/modem related but problem remains with different combinationsb of above.
Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

I guess so. Usually I use modem provided with rom. It looks like phone was going to deep deep sleep that it even loses network service and it wakes up when screen turns on. But as I said it happenes only when charging and, I think, only when I use internet sharing.
edit:
just checked with getril app and it says unknown ril so cant really tell if they match. I've put a NEAT rom 3.5 just today and didn't have chance to check wheather it still there or not but i guess it will still be there.
Your RIL and modem can change. The modem is up to the rom maker, they decide which one to use wheras your RIL stays the same from what you had on stock rom, unless you changed it of course

First of all, sorry for asking the same question twice (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1489237), but this thread seems to describe my problem even better.
I am using the latest Cyanogenmod 10 nightly on my Galaxy i9100, and it appears as if I have a similar problem. When I start charging my battery, the signal usually drops after a while. This is quite annoying, because I use my phone as WLAN hotspot. Rebooting the phone (charger connected) does not solve the problem. Instead, I usually have to unplug the cable and after that the phone quickly picks up a signal again.. I also tried to switch the airplane mode on/off. But then I cannot switch the airplane mode off again, so something really seems to be hanging. In these situations, the baseband version shows 'unknown'.
I have just used the app GetRil to confirm that the Ril and baseband version are matching.
Has anybody solved this problem? Is this a hardware or software issue? Are there any things I could test or should I provide more information?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Guys' though I've never experienced this issue with wi-fi hotspot, I do know why the wifi turns off when your phone is charging.
So to settings > wifi> press menu button> choose advanced
you'll see an option what says "keep wifi on during sleep" or something of sorts. The default is set to "never". You guys need to change it to "always".
Cheers

Sorry for the confusion, but I think you got me wrong. It is not the WLAN connection that drops. It is the mobile network connection that drops, so I cannot make/receive calls or use the 3G connection anymore.
Update:
Didn't find solution, flashed back sammy stock rom with custom kernel and all problems vanished. Using stock rom since than and never had this problem again.

Just for the records: I could also solve this issue by flashing a stock rom again. This must be a problem of Cyanogenmod.

I had this problem too and all I had to do was turn off fast charging in the settings
I think it turns off or lowers the strength of the network so it could charge faster and that's why it does this
I don't know much about tech so it might only help with my phone ( which is the Samsung a12 ) but I also hope it helps you too
Good luck

[Q] Wifi problem after MM update

I come from Italy and I updated my device on March, as everyone, I think. My device is now perfect except the wifi. The wifi disconnect during the stanby and it connects only using the static mode. I also have this problem even if I changed the wifi option for the stanby in "always". Another strange thing is that the wifi is reported as one of the main cause of consumption, as it is shown in the screeshot
I'm having WiFi issues as well since MM. It's set to Active on Sleep, but whenever I wake my tablet, it's disconnected and having much difficulties to re-connect.
I assumed it was some Xposed thing I'm running, haven't tested it 'clean'. Also, I'm on AndroPlusKernel v22. Not v22a yet.

Same problem here
Version .163
Stock kernel
Wifi standby settings to "always"
5Ghz wifi
Sometimes (not always) wifi disconnected after standby
DHCP working here
Maybe it is linked to wifi router problems during standby. I had wifi problems already before MM (! sign at wifi symbol). Maybe the difference now is that it isn't reconnecting in standby anymore after wifi failure. But just a guess...
At least it's not how option "always" should work...

Hi,
Maybe it's related to your router lease time that send a new DHCP address after lease time. Check if the lease time is set to "permanent"

I have the same issue but I actually have the turn off wifi in sleep enabled but it still shows up that its being used in sleep when I look at battery
The problem:?*
I connect it to the Wi-Fi and it works fine for about 5 minutes. As I'm watching YouTube videos every 5 minutes the video pauses and starts to buffer until it eventually say connection lost. Meanwhile the tablet still claims that Wi-Fi is still connected and with full connection. This also happens with web pages and apps that require and internet connection.
Temporary fix:
Turning Wi-Fi off and back on again fixes it, but only for a few minutes.
What have I tried to fix it?
I've tried everything from a factory reset to a software repair.
OS: Android 6.0 (Marshmallow)?*
Build Number: 32.1.A.1.185
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advanced.
