Galaxy Note: switching to Paranoid Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys, brand new to this forum.
i left iPhone to enter the android world via the Galaxy note....well, what to say, great change, great device, nice system....BUT, FOR GOD'S SAKE, THIS GUYS AT SAMSUNG DON'T HAVE A CLUE OF PROGRAMMING UI!!!!!
so i decided: i switch to the best, meaning i go to install Paranoid Android....
yes yes yes, i know there are a LOT of guides and infos everywhere about that, but, what i want to do is just simply applying step by step procedures and give a feed back to you all...
what i will do is getting here all the infos related to the Galaxy Note Paranoid android rom and installation, making clear and easy how to do the switch, so any new android user like me could know exactly what to do....
here i need some cooperation, senior members and experts: help me out on going on.
i have a rough idea of what to do, but i think the best way to find a way is to walk it ;-)
i'll post down every step i'm about to do, i'll give few hours to everybody to post suggestion then i'll go.
hope that's clear and somebody will follow.....let's star.
1) i'm going to downgrade from ics to Ginger Bread....
specific suggestion and/or guides about that are welcome, i'll start the procedure in 2 hours....see you later!
here i'm, back with a GB version installed on my note.
everything was smooth and easy, thanks to a very cool guide of an italian guy... here is the post: marchintosh.net/2012/02/guida-come-eseguire-il-downgrade-del-firmware-sul-galaxy-note/
follow this site, really rocks...if anybody need that translated, just ask me.
so now....kernel and root....i'm going via odin on windows.
as usual: i'll go in couple of hours, if anybody has something helpful leave that here :-D
see you!

[Q] to root or not to root

i have no idea what kernels, roms and modems are, yet i want my phone to be as fast as possible with the least amount of lag, to be able to download better apps (root required), and to uninstall bloatware(?). will "voiding my warranty" be beneficial to me and make me EXTREMELY happy with my vibrant as opposed to just fairly happy with it, or does it involve things way over my head that wont be worth my time and possible risk (bricking it)? to root...or not to root...? thanks for your opinions and advice!

IMO the benefits of rooting your phone does outweigh the benefits of leaving it stock (for warranty purposes). It looks like you know what you can achieve by rooting but before you decide to, I really do recommend that you read up on every sticky there is on this forum. I did tons of lurking and even when I joined, I literally lived in the reference threads before I decided to root mine and my husband's phone. Personally, I did it because our phones began to lag so much and my hubby's phone was in desperate need of reflashing to stock (it was crashing randomly and relocking itself after unlock - it was a good thing I had saved our codes). Just having ROM Manager and Titanium Backup saved so many butts on this forum when unfortunate things happen while experimenting.
Take my advice...
Rooting your vibrant can be "glorious"... if you follow directions.
First read some "first time" threads... get familiar etc..
Some advice.
1. Use one click root, or some other "one click solution"
2. After rooting, start small by installing clock work mod.
MAJOR: Make a backup... NANDROID BACKUP SAVES EVERYONE!
3. After this, start applying some mods like lockscreen etc...
4. Then start by flashing kernels. (start with voodoo... this makes the phone fast)
(then flash bali, you will get 1.5 days worth of battery life, with 10% to spare)
5. Then flash roms! They can change your phone experience!
Be sure to read directions, and don't be afraid to ask 10000's of questions on threads to make sure you know what you are flashing (just make sure it hasn't been mentioned on the first post)
do i only have one kernel and one rom at a time or can you have mult kernels/roms installed?
Op, I would encourage reading the guides in my signature. Let me know if I can help.
Rooting is the best thing you can do for your phone in my opinion.
Bro take a look at some post and you better follow directions... its the best thing for your phone, just like a new girl u have and u ask how the hell you could get her.. lml get familiar with odin because it will be your best friend to unbrick... also get z4root app to easy root, search in the bar for it cuss its not in the market... anything just ask me brother..... but first get familiar with all about rooting this phone ... gonna skip some bricks like happened to me when started

If you root the phone try using my rom lols
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Root is great fella read up on it. You can always unroot and what not if you need to take it back
I use swype so expect bad grammar and errors
And I would say the exact opposite about one-click roots.. your choice man. And this phone is incredibly (incredibly) hard to brick...
You guys are talking to a phone!

Actually, just in case you won't to look at options...
here is a guide I typed up for someone last night that lists the steps of going to ODIN > Root > CWR > Flash
Here are the steps.. again, I have more detailed guides but this shows you the process pretty easily.

Yeah, be sure and read some and then if anything doesn't make sense or you question the process, just let me know. Then go back and read again... you will be confident in the steps. It's not hard.
Telling someone not to read because it's boring is so uncool.

[Q] DUMMIEs for Android!

Hi, Everyone. i am BRAND new to android OS. i've been using IOS until recently i got Samsung Galaxy S2 i777 ATT--running android 2.3.6 gingerbread, for $9.99 (gre8t deal huh)
1) can someone PLEASE give me Step-By-Step guide on rooting/unlocking my device?
2) what is the VERY 1st thing i should do with my phone before rooting?
--also i dont have any MicroSD--i dont use tons of App or anything so is there a problem me not having MicroSD?
--also i am Wi-Fi cover 100%, 99.99% of the times and NOT wanting to use ATT Data
once rooted--will my Internet work (must hav for myself).
3)what are ROMs (i kno little abut them) but, which one are best & how should i keep up-to-date with it?
4)once unlocked my phone, can i continue using WITHOUT paying for DATA?---like i do with my Iphone (turning 3g & cell data OFF)

I get the feeling that some (myself included) will question this part. There are guides in this forum for nearly everything you asked. Search and I'm sure you'll find them.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1511999
Read, Read, Read is my first tip.
Start here, you will find everything for rooting.
Just a heads up as well, the search button and google should become your best friend. This forum is a self service forum, people don't take to kindly to those that don't do their research before posting.
SORRY!!! like i said i am DUMMMY to this android and really Fresh outta boat here. ive read alll the posts but, get very confused --sum say internet dont work after rooting....
If you are still confused after reading the link yoderk posted, then maybe you should not mess with your phone.
Just spend some time reading. Read more and rarely make new threads. This phone has been out for a while now so if you have a question, it probably has been asked before and answered.
1. It's in the link posted.
2. Turn it on
-no
-yes (unless you fuxxor it up)
3.a Did you google it?
3.b no such thing as "best" or else there would just be 1 ROM and everyone would be using the same one.
4. wifi? sure

Internet will work fine after rooting.
If you just got the phone, I would seriously recommend taking about 2 weeks to read up and figure out what you are doing. Everything is fairly simple once you know the terms and common lingo. Don't jump in and come out with a nice paper weight.

I suppose my previous post was less than helpful. 'pologies.
1) There is a thread that will give you step by step instructions for rooting your phone. "Zedomax" has videos available as well. Check out galaxys2root.com under the AT&T section. Yoderk's post will prove helpful, should you read it.
2) The first thing you should do is turn the phone on Kidding. Backup your apps and data, just in case. Backing things up is usually a good first option no matter what you're doing with your phone.
-- No MicroSD card, no problem. Your phone has a few gigs of memory built into it. Just buy one if you need more storage space on your phone.
-- Internet will work just fine if you root successfully. Same goes for Wifi.
3) The best ROM is the one you like the most. Try them out and see for yourself.
4) I'm not sure what you're asking with this one.
THANKS everyone, & once again SORRY---lately thats what i been doing READIN everything i can about Android
but one thing thats keep bothering me is, i saw zedomax's video and they have OLD 2.3.4 gingerbread & i have 2.3.6 gingerbread....
can i still proceed with old files? or there are upgrades that i keep missing?

I wouldn't recommend using that method, I would flash entropy's stock package that includes root and cwm via odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
you can find it in the op of that thread.
Ok, thanks
i am sinking all the info now, gettting hang of it
one more quest. is Titanium backup free? and wht is most imp things to back up besides Apps?
I would suggest using it stock for a week, see if it does everything you need it to.
If it does, then just run stock.
That way there's no risk.
If you do decide to flash then like everyone else is saying, read and reread. Spend some time, several days just reading because there might be some little bit of information that you might miss, but is critical to a successful flash.
Good luck and welcome to freedom.

Well you can get the free version but I highly recommend getting the pay version as it saves time hand over foot as it will bulk install all of your apps. As far as apps, maybe sms if you need them that's all I do. Just a word of advise with TB never restore system apps to a different rom, it'll give you a headache.

A little help - Install Clockwork and after android

Hello guys. I have a touchpad and want to install android on it. First of all i want to know if i can keep webos on the tablet and dual-boot with android?
i need a step by step to install clockwork...after that's made it's simple to install android...or i hope so it's the same as on my htc phone.
Thanks in advance, Stefan.
I'm just going to send you here:

Yeah, seriously...there have been like lots of other posts asking these same 2 questions. You might try reading through the forums. You would find your answers pretty quickly. Or use google. Look here for some answers.
It's not the same as installing Android on your HTC. It's actually easier. And thankfully (because believe it or not there are a lot of idiots out there) it's more difficult to screw it up. Anyway, you'll find good tutorials here. And that guy is much nicer than I am about dumb questions.
You can thank me by using Google next time, or the search forum feature here. It's a little button up near the top right.
thanks for the help guys
Ps: for those that think that i'm lazy...i'm not...i searched for some info and wasn't sure about some things. it;s a forum and it's better to ask for help instead of making your device result in a brick !

Hello everyone! I'm Wolf!

Hi everyone!
Anyway, my name's Wolf (that's what people call me) but my username is Bad-Wolf, obviously.
So, I got this phone for my 13th birthday. Best present ever. Never gotten anything like it. I used to have a HTC Wildfire S, but unfortunately, it got stolen. Link in the description. So I was left without a phone for a few months, depressed, and angry. And I was inactive on XDA for all those months. It felt like I lost my place here. I was quite known in the WFS forum, and I even developed a simple ROM, but I'm not going to name it because if I want to make a ROM here then I want to use the name again. I was also (trying) to make a simple kernel, but then it got stolen so there was no point. I'm quite a noob by the way.
So, I'm going to be here for quite a while, looking at threads and learning. Which is going to be really difficult because there's like a million threads. So if there's anything you think I should see, please tell me.
I applied to be a mod quite some time back, but I didn't get accepted. But I was informed that I would've got the job, because my application was awesome, but they're keeping me for reserve, and I might get picked if they need mods soon.
Also, let's talk about my (social group) TDOT. Which stands for "The Devs of Tomorrow". This was a group that I made a few months ago, and now is growing, and has 50+ members. It's for kids like me who like developing, or want to get into it. I'm currently making the website, and we're still working. But it's a great group, with great people.
I suppose the only work I've done with Galaxy phones is I quickly rooted and unrooted my Mum's Samsung Galaxy S, and I nervously put stock ICS on my Dad's Galaxy S2, using Odin. I was really scared, because I had never used Odin, I didn't want to brick it, and it was my first flash on that phone (after like 100 on the WFS, lol).
I've heard about all the Apple v Samsung v HTC drama. Apple has had a truce with HTC apparently. And I've heard of Samsung jigs, read a bit about them. They do something like force the phone into download mode or something, very useful for resetting the flash counter, and other stuff like that. Also, they can get you out of bricks, if you got a bad situation, maybe even a USB brick (not sure about it).
I want to learn as much as possible.
That's all I can remember to say for now (I'm forgetful). Anyway, I hope I can make good friends here, like I did on the WFS section, and maybe get into the small developing scene.
Sorry if this thread isn't in the right place. Sowwy. So I made up for it by writing all this!

Hello, aleays nice to see new young devs, I hope you feel at home with us
To root you will want to flash cf root in odin to do this dowbload the package, extract the zip once (it includes odin).
Put the phone in download mode, open odin and end all kies processes, connect the usb and odin should say added. Click the pda button and add the .tar file that was in the zip, make sure repartition is NOT checked and click start when it reboots you will be rooted.
To reset the binary counter use the triangle away app either on play store or free on xda.
I'll add links when I'm on my laptop until then search and thou shall receive

Completely new to rooting.

Hi all,
I am very fresh to this forum. Even though I got my account created in 2006 on this website I never used it.
All over the internet and the forums people mention about rooting the phones. I never really cared about rooting my phone out of the fear of bricking it. So I always put that option away. Now its serious time to learn it, as I am understanding the real benefits of it.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Note LTE SGH -i717D which is from the carrier Telus in Canada. How do I start of with rooting on this device? What is the latest version of Android available for this device for rooting? Are the custom ROMS really flawless?
Somebody please kindly help me get rid of the starting trouble I have.
Thanks all.

Thanks all.

This has got to be the easiest method of rooting. It's what I've used on a few different phones and has never failed me!
Custom roms vary in stability. If they are based on source code they are going to be more stable than others. They will say "built from official source". Other roms can be just as stable depending on the developer and how much effort was put into the rom. You have to read the threads on the roms to compare issues if any, then pick the one you want to try.
The best advice I can give you is before you install or flash anything you verify it's for your device, and read the instructions at LEAST twice!
Welcome to xda ... I suggest you first read the xda rules. This is the general forum. Not for questions. There is a Q &A forum to ask questions in ... After searching.
That said ... Super everything thread is for you.

That link works basically for all i717's but the OP has a Canadian Note and it requires another step.

Admin, my intention isn't to hijack this thread. But I thought I'd ask prior to starting a new thread since I having the same concern, and before I get flamed. Please let me know which approach would be suitable to ask more questions while staying on topic.
I've been researching and reading tons of information everywhere. However I reached the conclusion that the more I read the more confusing it became. Whenever I thought I was ready to take the plunge, It's so overwhelming even figuring out what's current or what's outdated methods and files needed - I simply can't catch up without direct assistance.
OP: Thanks so much for starting this thread. For me, being a long time Android OS lover, yet entirely newbie when it comes to rooting jargons - I couldn't have said it any better - you took the words right out of my mouth!!!... The only tiny difference is that I have the SGH -i717R (Rogers).

Hi Lousk,
I know its really hard for a newbie to even think of where to start when it comes to rooting, because there are tons of information on rooting all over the internet and moreover confusion too. I learned it the hard way and I am glad to say now that I came out with flying colors. As with each official update, my device was getting totally sluggish, non responsive and out of all very little battery life. I couldn't stand this at all, one evening I sat on the internet, took the whole night before starting to do on anything with my device.
I didn't install any custom roms, but I rooted it which in turn helped me turn off a lot of services running in the background and also uninstall all the Samsung bloats, mainly the touchwiz. That thing is really resource hungry. Now my device is working at lightning speed and I have a feeling that it wont be obsolete in another 10 years.
I have all the files and also the instructions on rooting on my drive, unfortunately XDA is not allowing me to paste the link over here unless I have made 10 posts. They say it is just to prevent spams. If you are willing to give me your email id I can sent the link to you.
Go ahead and root your device to get the full potential of your unit.
Good luck,
Sumesh
