[Q] Battery and Baseband Version - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having problem with standby eating up my battery. I would like to start a thread with everyone stating their baseband and the amount of in % being used by Cell Standby, and the total no. Of hours of unplug. Here is mine:
baseband: xxlef
Baseband %: 25
Unplug time: 15 hours
I know this is not the most objective way as there are also other variables, such as screen time...etc, but this should help to identify the most efficient baseband...
Thanks..

Baseband: XXLE8
Baseband %: 65
Unplug time: 29 hours (55% remaining)

Giving the remaining % is also important. I left that out as I assumed all will have pretty much used up the battery when reporting.
LE8 seems real good with 29 hours standby using around 29% (65% x 45%) of the total battery.
For mine, I get 15 hours with 25% of the total battery.
Thanks

Best way to work it out is this (this is using my current stats)
full battery (100%) - battery remaining (33%) = 67% / 100 = 0.67 x cell standby (27%) = 18.09% used by cell standby / time on in hours (13 hours) =
1.4% an hour used by cell standby

Well explained, thanks. We should all try to state % per hour used by cell standby figures for the different basebands so the figures are easy to directly compare.

No problem
Only thing it doesn't take into account is signal strength but its close enough for now

Agreed, but it'd still be nice to have collection of figures so a 'Normal' range can be established.
My value came in at 1.65% an hour used by cell standby
I'm using the LE9 firmware (which uses the XXLE8 baseband)

Just for reference a Samsung Galaxy SII on 3 (the wifes phone) works out to
full battery (100%) – battery remaining (62%) = battery used (38%) / 100 = 0.38 x cell standby (10%) = 3.8% used by cell standby / time on in hours (22.5 hours) =
0.17% an hour used by cell standby
A shocking difference and that wasn't on wifi for most of the time so its not just a GPRS connection like mine is sat on at the moment.

This is good. Keep this going.
Mine uses 1.7% per hour.

It might pay to also note down your country and network.
Can someone who feels that they have high battery drain from cell standby install BetterBatteryStats and tell me if under Kernel Wakelocks there is something called secril_fd-interface - this is related to Fast Dormancy

My country and operator is listed under my name on the right. I'll install better battery stats now and see what comes back.
I have just switched from O2 to Orange (GSM900 to 1800Mhz) and the drain seems the same from the short time i've been on orange anyway. So i highly doubt the operator or signal strength has any major part in it.

Folks, I may have found a solution to the battery drain....
I found this on www.androidnz.net

and I am testing it now. It is on turning off Fast Dormancy..
I will report back after a full day use tomorrow.

good news, i hope this weill help. i have "secril_fd-interface" too,

so is it better?

I can report that I get about 1-2 hours more, approximately. I used to get around 15-16 hours for each charge and now around 18 hours.
So it is better but nothing extraordinary. The battery reporting is still messed up, according to a thread in the General section.

[Q] Battery Drain

Hello everyone,
I've been using Htc Evo 3d for one week. So far only the battery life makes me upset. For generally, i am happy to have this phone. I don't play so much with this phone however at the end of the day it dies so easily. For example today i took this phone from charger at 12 am and now 12 pm the battery is dead now. 12 h with moderate usage. 10 minutes phone call, 10 minutes web searching, all the time whatsapp, no taking photos, no game playing. And i discover some strange thing. At some level of my battery it is consumed much rapidly and some point it stops. Especially, the last 10 percentage the consumption is very low. In order to drain the battery i play games. To sum up, is it a calibration problem ? Is it a system bug ? (I use wifi all the time, 3g is mostly shut down, gps never open, brightness manual and when i am indoor it is almost zero). Mostly display consumes the huge amount of the energy of the battery. In order to improve my battery what can i do by physically. For example can i recalibrate my battery ? Because the consumption level is so different at some certain percentage. For example my battery never fills up to %100 always starts from %99 even the green light turns on it is always % 99. The voltage when the device is plugged always getting higher and at the end of the charging process it reaches 4.340 V. I guess it is very high degree.
What should i do ?
You probably have an application causing a wakelock. Get Better Battery Stats from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 and use it to check
I actually don't know much about android phones. I use stock rom and the software never modified. I tell you about my battery usage.
My battery status is %18 and the usage:
Display: %46 = 1h52m
Voice call: %25 = 32m
Google maps: %8= 4h25m
Cell standby: %6= 12h10m
Phone idle: %4= 11h18m
Wifi: %1 = 3h11m
Did you face same problem ? Actually i don't know it is normal or there is something wrong about my phone. If you think there is an unusual usage, i will bring the phone to the tecnical service or if you think this is normal Htc Evo 3d battery usage, i am thinking to sell it someone else.

You are complainging that you are getting almost 2 hours of display on time? That is pretty decent definetly if you still have 18%.

Well...lets see...from I can see on your usage:
Display: %46 = 1h52m (decent)
Voice call: %25 = 32m (normal even though you said 10 minutes)
Google maps: %8= 4h25m (there is something wrong here)
Cell standby: %6= 12h10m (what about your time without signal?)
Phone idle: %4= 11h18m (normal)
Wifi: %1 = 3h11m (so out of 11 hours, you were on wifi for only 3?)

[Q]What is normal battery life on the S2?

Hi all,
I was wondering what a "normal" battery usage is for the S2.
Mine (cm9) 10% per hour, pretty much idle.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
There is no "normal" battery life. There are literally a million variables and thus no answer.
In terms of expectations - you would expect more life per charge from Stock GB, Custom GB, Stock ICS, Custom ICS in that order. Remember that ICS by its nature uses more resources generally and will not match GB for battery life.
Also, ignore wild claims about many hours with the screen on - it is a trick - they have the screen all black so no current draw...
Last time i was using Ressurection remix v1.3 AOKP i was getting 7 hours per 3% Phone was idle all the time Now i am using Thebyan 4.2 and battery drops 6% per 8 hours (idle all time )
And I am getting around 4:20 hours of battery life with normal usage ( screen on all the time plus Browsing via WIFI) Brightness - 10 percentage.
And while playing HD Games only 90 minutes !!
Well i prefer screen-on time over idle time

^^ this. Probably the best answer I've seen on here all week. No such animal. Just like there's no way you're going to get the same 'performance' with a given rom or kernel as someone else; which makes the "What's the best rom for <insert criteria here>' questions redundant and a waste of time as well.
This morning from 100 to 78 in 2 hours using edge and tapatalk xda forum. Screen at 50, GPS on, little Facebook. on formula one rom
Four days less if i switch the phone on .Even less if i use it .
jje
I get about 2 hours per 1% battery. That is with wifi on and screen off. If I have wifi turned off and airplane mode on I will get about 7 hours per 1% battery.
I always have my phone in airplane mode turned on, and wifi turned on, as I don't use the mobile network, and I am always in range of a wifi network
Cheers corey

CM9 and a lot of AOKP roms drain battery faster. Anyway my battery drain when idle is roughly 1% every 7 hours
well i get a decent life ,iam fully loaded an always install something, android is power hungry,so i don expect much of batt life...but i turn off wat iam not using like data,,,an in the night i listen to dubstep so i keep in flight mode an in morning switch back,so yes neva measured batt life, but happy....

[Q] Battery Drain on CellStandby

Anyone with a telecom New Zealand (9300T) can you check your cellstandby for battery
It is using more than the screen is.
yesterday phone was at 30% with only 2 hours screen on.
Cellstandby used 67%
Can anyone else confirm that they are having the same problem on the S3 or is it the telecom nz firmware doing it.
If so I will root and flash another providers firmware

This is NOT an issue. The numbers have to equal 100% as its a measure of what's been happening since your last charge so if its doing nothing then cellstandby gets the highest percentage. ITS NOT A BUG.

That means that it has used 42% out of the 37% that have been used during those 8,5 hours. 42% out of 37% = 15,5%
Hence, cell standby, only used 15,5% of battery during those 8,5 hours.
15,5/8,5 = 1,8 % an hour.
Not an issue, as stated previously.

Go away with your baboon logic. There's people posting 5h screentime battery statistics with cell standby having almost equal percentage as the screen. Either it is a very bad reporting error, which I doubt because people are reporting bad standby battery life, or there is something wrong with the modem firmware which has already happened on other devices.
It is an obvious issue, and please go install Badass Battery Monitor or something else to view the absolute µAh draw so we can stop the lame excuses about how things need to sum up to 100 and other flawed logics.
Hence, cell standby, only used 15,5% of battery during those 8,5 hours.

And since when the hell is 1.8%/h pure modem draw been acceptable? The Galaxy S2 with the predecessor of the exactly same modem hardware is getting 0.5%/h total standby draw usually.
I'm on Vodafone nz. With pretty heavy use the figures were just over 7 hours screen time out of 12 total and cell standby stood at 14%

It drained over 8% of my battery in 5 hours today. (Battery at 78% now in 5 hours - was 100% this morning)
Having this problem as well. Phone wont last me throughout the day with minimal use and you can feel it hot when placing it in my bag.
I wont start talking about the % use of cell vs screen. But when the battery lasts 10 hours with only 30min of screen use throughout the day, then there's a problem !!
I had this problem with Galaxy S. Changed modem firmware seemed to help a bit but still isnt as long as my previous phones.

Seems something is wrong with your phone. Mine has had medium use for over 20 hours and i have 36% battery left.
Mine is at 61% now and it's has 09:30 hours use. My screen has been on for 1:30 hours so quite heavy use.
The weird thing is:
My phone radio started out with 55% power use the first 2 hours and dropped to 30% power use and is still dropping. No idea why tbh. I didn't use my phone more or let my screen on for more time..
My screen is still around 50%
My app use is 21% now. (with sygic taking up 10% while the app is not even on)

you have something else going on i lose 2% overnight...try airplane mode see what happens
I think your charger may be broken lol. You charge it every night yet your phone is at 53% when you wake up? Anyway, assuming you sleep 8 hours and that your phone was at 100% that is less than 50% on 8 hours. You probably get 17 hours standby time, not the best but not the worst. Try airplane mode

Coming home with 80% left....
what says your battery settings? what stands by "battery in standby"? How much takes "android system", how many apps are listed in total? Do you have battery save mode on?=> Try to turn it off. Do you have auto brightness? Turn it off, set the display to 40-50% and make a widget on home with settings to 100% so you can read under heavy sun. You are outside the day?=> turn the wifi off....
Tell us more and post your results, the comment that your device is a bucket full of crap is bull**** because the S3 has one of the best battery and settings in smartphone business!...

I still suspect this may be router related though. When I had my crappy Netgear, I would get strange periods of battery drain on my SGS2 when WIFI was left on. That just about all disappeared once I upgraded to an Asus RT-N16 running Tomato, and now, I don't get any drain on my SGS3 as well when I leave WIFI (set to "Always On" under Advanced WIFI Settings) idling.

I too think it's router related. It can possibly be due to Wifi dual banding in some routers that support it. Faster internet with less battery life.

XPERIA P Battery Life

The reason i start this post is to gather experiences and facts about Xperia P's battery life.
Sony was advertising that the compination of Novathor and Whitemagice results to almost 50% less need in power energy for the mobile and for that reason the battery of 1305 mAh is enought.
My opinion is that Sony has ultimately failed in this part.
My phone:
Rom : 6.0.B.3.162 (i dont have the signal drop problem)
network : WCDMA (3g)
Data: always on
Ayto sunch: Always Off
Live Wallpaper: No
Battery life: 10-13 hours
I usually use my cellphone for calls / texting / whatsapp/facebook. The thing that use my battery the most is always Display (always 60%-70% of battery) and the hour that the dispay is active, is 1h 30min to 2h 10mins. The average talking time per charge is 30m - 50 mins.
I usually charge my phone twice a day but if i use it for games or internet or photographs i have to charge it three times per day.
I m waiting for the ICS in order to see some battery life improvement . If i dont , then i ll sell it.

10-13 hrs is good by your usage..
If you've rooted your phone, you could reduce your clock speeds to reduce battery drain
May I ask why you have your data turned on most of the time?

I dont think that 10-13 hr is good by my usage ... My previous phone SE Arc was up to 17-20 hours with heavier usage.
I have data all the time turned on because i use Whatsapp and facebook messenger instead of SMS .
Even though the WhiteMagic and Novathor combo does give the impression of being more energy efficient, but at the same time, Sony guys could have thrown in a 1700-1800 mAh battery which would have been brilliant!! After all, of what practical benefit to the customers is making it more energy efficient left, if they cut down the capacity to level it up with the same backup as earlier with less efficient chip? !!
