You must be rooted, for more information google search "XDA Motorola Photon 4G AIO Root", also you need to use, I believe it is...

Just google it and add .apk to the end if your search terms.

I have been doing it a little different than what was posted so maybe you can try it. May not make a difference but works for me.
**Someone else figured this method out and gets all the credit. I can't find the original post to link to.
1) Download Wireless Tether app and then Data Enabler widget from Market.
2) Set in WT app:
Device Profile --> Google - NexusOne
Setup Method --> Netd (master)
3) Toggle Data Enabler widget off --> turns off 3G/4G connectivity
4) Start tethering in WT app.
5) Toggle Data Enabler widget on --> turns on 3G/4G
Device should immediately show up as WAP and connect via infrastructure mode.
Works great for me. Hope this helps.

Thats crazy - I downloaded this and it tells me my "kernal will not allow the access-control, access-control disabled"...
I tried changing the device type, etc as you guys stated above, but it still won't start up the tethering.. any ideas?

odd - okay - will give it another try at home.. I had a couple guys try to find the wireless signal with their phones and no one could find the network. Will post back when I figure out if that is working or not.

Are you trying wireless or wired? I always had Luck with easytether for wired and wifi tether beta for wireless. Google search wifi tether and it should come up, I'm using beta 10 I think. You have to change thedevi even profile to a nexus device and then type to netd(master) to get it to work

Pretend your talking to an idiot, matter fact, dont pretend......what is thedevi? profile, netd?
Are you using windows vista? It has problems with wifi anywhere, not just tethering. Try repairing your connection. If that doesn't work try setting up a new connection. Look in development . Download the latest version here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Then place it on your SDcard and install. Make sure your phone will allow unknown sources by going to settings > application settings > and check unknown sources.
After the app installs open it up. Hit the menu soft key and select settings. In the settings, set the "Device-Profile" to Samsung Galaxy S2 and then set the "Setup-Method" to Netd (master). This will somehow enable the built-in mobile hotspot, which will give you infrastructure mode, which pretty much all computers like.
I also have MSS clamping checked. I dont have the Routing Fix checked. You can change the SSID and security settings if you want. Now, exit out of the settings and start tethering by touching the symbol in the middle of the screen. Now get on to your computer and find the network. Everything should work from there.
Good luck.
One more option
I just tried with "open garden wi-fi tether" on Stock with Jokers Higpro kernel and it works just fine.
If I remember proper when I ran the stock kernel tethering would connect but not transfer data. Kinda sound like what your problem is.

They still have PC/Laptops with Vista? SOB, I thought the FCC, FBI, CIA, Homeland Security and Sarah Palin all sued them and forced MicroSoft to purchase back all copies for MicroSoft's failure to disclose it was a POS? Even the drug cartels forced summlgers to use Vista Laptops for directions, they figured if they got caught, border guards would laugh so hard they could excape anyway!!!

By the way, I am also stock and rooted. Running 198_7 straight up with some bloat removed and wireless tether works fine for me.
Hey guys, I have searched and tried alot of apps and setting to get wifi tethering with my phone. I am rooted, VIPERDNA ROM, S-OFF, and all the apps i use either crash or they try to use the stock tethering which states i need to buy the service plan.
Anyone have anything they use to wifi tether with their DNA? I would really like to do this but I am not going to pay that extra $ for it.
Thanks
P.S. Got a friend to come from his ThunderBolt to the DNA- He loves it!
I use WiFi tether version 3.2-beta2 ***BETA*** with device profile set to Generic ICS/JB (wlan0) & Setup Method to Netd-Ndc (master). Works flawlessy. DNA is stock rom, s-off, rooted. Also enable routing fix. I believe it's the same one in the Play Store. It has the yellow wifi logo (not the green one.)
*EDIT*
With that set-up, I can get other Android phones to run on it.
*EDIT #2*
Not sure when it was updated but now I use version 3.3-beta2-06102013 ***Synergized*** Settings are as follows:
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Netd-Ndc (master)
Send Ntd Max Client Cmd: unchecked
Enable WiFi-Encryption: yes
Mac Address Spoof: unchecked
Don't disable Bluetooth: checked
WiFi-driver reload: unchecked
WiFi-driver reload 2:checked
Enable Access-Control: checked
LAN Section
MSS clamping: checked
Routing fix: checked
Miscellaneous Section
Enabled Update-Check
Disabled Wake-Lock
My DNA is completely stock, no custom ROM, no custom kernel, nothing. It is fully S-OFF & rooted. While these particular settings work for me, others (phones, roms, etc...) may need to play around with the settings to find the perfect fit. Best of luck to all.

Wireless Tether on CM10.1 4.3.3 Razr XT912?
* This is REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT for me. My Samsunng Galaxy Tab 1 10.2 has a nice big screen for watching HD shows and movies, great for maps and navigation, and fun for games. Not to mention video chats and other things where I need a much bigger screen. I have unlimited data so watching HD Movies all day would not cost a cent, whether it is on the phone or granted access by the Wireless Tether for rooted phones. Verizon charges $20/Mo for that "service" whether you use it or not. I used to subscribe to the service until i got hurt and had to take disabliity. Now I still need it but no way have the money to pay for it. Stock Verizon Blur ROM Android 4.1.2, WiFi tether version 3.2-beta2, worked "right out of the box" Woo Hoo! Somebody answer please, tell me where to ask this question, ask someone else, or anything. It sure is lonely way down in here. Like having a naked swim party at your own mansion, plenty of hot women, live music, drinks, anything you want or need, just ask. And nobody shows up!
I use WiFi tether version 3.2-beta2 ***BETA*** flawlessly with all settings on auto with my Motorola Droid Razr Maxx XT012 when I run the stock, rooted ROM. Android 4.1.2. Now I want to get off stock and use a Cyanogen ROM. I cannot use 10.2 because Data is not supported for this phone in that ROM. But CM10.1 works fine, I get data (4G) and of course my phone works. But I have yet to get wireless tether to work at all on this ROM. I tried the settings that were suggested, it shows up as running, but I use a tablet with WiFi Manager on it. It has an auto-updating radar screen on it. When I turn on tether, it shows up right away, on the correct channel, with the correct SSID (Network Name). But in this CM 10.1 ROM, it does not work at all. All wifi tethers I have tried so far do not work on this ROM. Check screenshots for ROM info.
Man I got to go to bed, just fell asleep at the keyboard for a few seconds and found I had typed in 736 w characters. Time for bed, 'night y'all!
Anybody get Wireless Tether for rooted phones to work on this ROM?

As for coolpad's, I have no experience with those. I only have HTC's: Droid Incredible & Droid DNA. Try changing the rom settings within tether.

I tried & tried as well, looking up apps, going to app store, if they worked then Sprint would have already had app store tell my my phone it was not compatible. Plus the large amount of just BOGUS apps on playstore.
This hotspot on my phone, the one the laptop is hooked to right now is as fast or faster than my router on home network! You have to choose either HOME or WORK before windows 7 will map it out. Saw no internet connectivity past my named hotspot but after restarting the access to hotspot (& hotspot) a couple times it popped up on phone, red windows shield icon with x and had to okay it in the dropdown before it hooked up and worked.
Thanks for this!!!

Hi All - coming to the LGOG from the SG Note which had no problems stock rooted - wifi tether working - just changed profile to I think nexus or something can't remember.
Has anyone consistently been able to get hotspot to enable on the stock ROM? what are the settings you are using in wifi tether? Assuming that is how you were able to get it to run. I am rooted on Jellybean - i have tried what google suggested and forum search suggested with no joy.
Tried - device profile SG3, generic ICS / JB (lan0)
It launches but no devices see it broadcasting? HELP!
Need this feature - want to stay with stock ROM if possible?
Thanks

Works with stock as well. Use netd-ndc (master) and you should see your Wi-Fi ssid available. Choose an alternate lan if you can see the net but not get a connection. Search these forums, there is a little more detail posted.

Ok - tried that and it did get me broadcasting but when I tried loggin into the device on my laptop it BSOD'd my laptop (tried it 3x and got same result) on Generic ICS/ JB lan0 and lan1 would not broadcast? I did search before and came up with no confirmed working settings? Any thoughts or can anyone sticky this or add working confirmed WIFI tether app settings that work on rooted unlocked stock?
Do you pay monthly for tethering service?

Is it undetectable if you are rooted or running a different ROM

Yes, didn't mention it because it was what you said (Generic ics/jb wlan0).
Did you try a different lan selection? I don't know what about it would make your laptop crash - sounds like an issue with your laptop that is incompatible with something in the AP settings.
You might need to try the netd max client cmd option too.
I also have a method (no sexy app, just a few commands I put into a script) that lets me run a socks proxy on my phone while my phone is a regular wifi client on my network (just brings up wifi without disabling data), and I can point my pc's web browser at it, thus usable even with wired pc's on my network. You can go a step further and apply the iptables rules the way wifi tether does, point your default gateway at it, and be tethered too.

the centrino driver on my Laptop gets a BSOD when connecting to the wifi hotspot with this phone and nexus 4 i guess- it is an identified issue on the Intel wireless community some people installed older drivers for their chipset to get it working, but mine does not have older drivers it is an ASUS UX31a (love this ultrabook) - final solution was to disable N mode on the advanced tab of the wireless chipset. Connects now no problem and stays connected.
my work laptop OLD intel chipset has no problem and hooked right up to the tether
Settings:
Wireless tether
Device profile - (Generic ics/jb wlan0)
Device Set-up method - Netd-NDC (master)
Lan- 192.168.1.0/24 (thanks Jdoc i did change this was defaulted to 192.168.2.0/24)
Hope if anyone else is in a quandry on this it helped - thanks for the support!
Cool - do you get the data display on the wifi tether screen (amount transferred and speed)? I had this but it seems like the JB update made it go away - maybe their method of collecting the data is incompatible with JB or maybe something else got trashed in the update.
Thanks for posting your solution.

and while tethering works fine, I cannot get wifi back after stopping the tether and closing wifi-tether. I can't get wifi back until I reboot the phone. I've tried a number of device profiles (generic, generic ics/jb (both of them), SGSIII) and they all behave the same way. I didn't have this trouble with the stock ICS, this just started with the at&t jb update.
anyone get this working?

That's what I had to do too. Wifi wouldn't turn back on unless I rebooted. I'm not sure how to get it working, considering I'm on Rootbox now.
Is it possible to tether a rooted droid incredible 4g running the stock HTC Sense image that STILL has the unlimited data plan (I got the phone just before they killed it last summer)? I have a stock droid incredible 4g (Android 4.0.4) that I simply unlocked the bootloader on and installed/flashed SuperSU from TWRP. I apologize if my terminology is off as I am new to this. I have installed both WiFi Tether and FoxFi and have had no success with either program. I may be configuring something incorrectly or it may not be possible given I'm still on the unlimited data plan. I assumed that rooting my device would somehow allow Wifi Tether to bypass whatever verizon blocks on the unlimited data plans to prevent tethering. I have googled everything I can with regard to this issue and have attempted all the recommended fixes with FoxFi (rename the SSID, reboot the phone, disabled WiFi, etc...). I do not know how to configure Wifi Tether (tried the defaults and a few combinations I found on google) and have found very little to assist further with it. There are multiple device-profiles and setup-methods to choose from in addition to a bunch of other options, and am hoping someone know specifically what I can do or have a combination that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Simplified Questions:
(1) Is it possible to teather on a droid inc 4g with unlimited data?
***These Questions assume '1' above is true***
(2) Can this work in FoxFi, if so, how do I configure it?
(3) Can this work in Wifi Tether, if so, how do I configure it?
(3a) In Wifi Tether, I would need it set up to do a 'hotspot' not an ad-hoc network connection, no clue how to do this...
(3b) In Wifi Tether, which device-profile and setup-method should be used?
(3c) There are a number of options in WiFi Teather, which ones should be selected?
Solved
I continued to search and try settings and figured out what worked:
(1) Phone must be rooted
(2) Download WiFi Teather
(3) In Settings -> Choose HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM) as the 'Device-Profile'
(4) Leave the 'Setup-Method' as 'Auto', which is the default
(5) Optional: Use 'WiFi-Encryption' if you'd like
(6) Set the SSID
(7) Check the box for 'Wifi-driver reload'
(8) Ensure 'MSS clamping' is checked (was by default for me)
(9) Ensure 'Routing fix' is checked (was by default for me)
(10) Start Tethering
The above should work...
Simple, if your on a sense based ROM just use open garden https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=og.android.tether
And in settings select either generic ICS or rezound I forget its been a while but I know it works flawlessly
On cm which I am just use the built in tethering very simple
I use WiFi Tether (currently using 3.2-beta2). Works great. Fast, no drops, etc.
While I am running ViperLTE, I see no reason why it won't work with rooted stock.
In fact... I'm using it right now

Which wifi-tether app are you referring to? From which author... As there are many different apps in the store. Thx
I also suggest freezing mobile hotspot and tetheringguard using titanium backup.

I believe the full title is "WiFi Tether for Root Users". For some reason, it seems to appear and disappear from the Google Play Store at random.
The best place to find it is at the code project home here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

i still don't seem to have gotten past the throttling... i have frozen these apps with not apparent change.
tethering works - i just don't get the same speed results when comparing my phone vs laptop. :dunno: i also note my area doesn't seem to have very fast 4g speeds compared to results i see posted on the internet.

I have found that signal strength/area is everything when it comes to speeds - tethering or otherwise. At work, I have intermittent 4G and my tethering speeds are so-so. I have to carefully put my phone in the right spot to get 4G, and that spot varies depending on the weather...
However, at home my signal and 4G are rock solid. 4G speeds, including tethering, are faster than my WiFi connection.
hey

Thanks - I'm on Viper 2.2.0 and this is what worked for me. Before I updated the ROM a few weeks ago, I was able to use the older settings with the generic ICS profile and without Wifi-driver reload.

I also have the Inc 4G Lte and just loaded Viper LTE 2.2.0
Using the above settings, I still can't get it to work. It runs and my other devices can see it and connect to it but there is no traffic.
Anybody got any ideas.
