[Q] Setting up Tbolt to send faxes from W7 laptop? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'd like to use my HTC Thunderbolt as a wireless fax/modem for my Fujitsu laptop, which is running Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit).
I can connect via Blue Tooth and as a wireless hot spot. However, when I run the laptop's fax program, it does not see the phone in the list of connected fax/modems.
Is what I want to do doable? Currently running Thunderstick Full Blown Sense 3.0 custom ROM.
Thanks!
Robert

I use a paid service and fax thru email, 7.95 a month. Its ring central, works fantastic

Doesn't really solve the issue I was specifically asking about, but thanks for the reply anyways!!

I just checked into this. The Thunderbolt does not seem to have any documented (official or unofficial) support to be used as a modem, so faxing with it would not be possible unless you used a third party service like donnyp1 said.
Some "old school" cell phones, like my old Kyocera 2325, would show up as a modem in Windows with a COM port and everything when connected via USB - allowing you to send faxes. I also experimented with this myself and could not get it to work. Also, the Bluetooth modem/COM port service is not there either. Bummer!

Thanks for checking it out. Too bad that was the result though. I send faxes so infrequently, that paying a monthly charge for the service wouldn't be worth it at this time. I'll just have to look for an RJ-11 express card for my laptop instead.

[Q] Has any one got the Moto software to work?

I spent three hours with Moto level two tech support to try to get either the phone portal or the media sync to work on windows 7 32 bit pro running Chrome 15, EI 9, and firefox 5 to work correctly either via usb or wifi. I keep getting security blocks (insecure content) even though I whitelist the IP address/port and no program is blocking it.
When on USB media sync just sits there trying to connect with the phone until it times out.
I have had an Epic 4g work, A HTC EVO3D work and it strikes me that the Moto software just sucks. What Level two said was to go back two to three generations on my browsers to try that as that is what they developed it for. Great, the wonderful software development team at Moto did not test the new product on anything remotely close to current software.
Plus I can not get the damn thing to recognize the unit on any powered usb hub. I have to dedicate a port directly from my computer (never had to do that before even in the Palm days).
I left Samsung due to their ineptness in software development for the Epic 4g waiting for updates but now I wonder if I made an even worse choice with the Photon software capability.
Phone portal is working great for me on Wifi. That's all I've tried.

Is it possible?

Currently to me ubuntu running on top of android is pointless but intriguing. Is it possible to connected an external Usb wifi adapter to the phone and have it recognized in ubuntu? More simply put can the phone allow the needed data through the USB interface? I cannot be the only one considering the joy of running Airpwn on a mobile phone... Any thoughts? If the wifi adapter is possible it opens up a whole new box of abilities for the phone.

Went ahead and ordered http://www.amazon.com/Alfa-AWUS036H-Wireless-Long-Rang-Panel/dp/B003YI4HRM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
And a couple microusb to Usb adapters to test with.. I'll let yall know if I'm successful when I get everything.

I've been thinking about this since i got the Note. Glad to see someone is thinking along the same lines.
I'm looking forward to seeing your results.
I should have the wifi adapter this week but the damn 50 cent microusb adapter will take until the 1st. Some odd reason I didn't feel like paying for shipping on something that costs 50cents.

Funny I just ordered an Ethernet to usb adapter for similar purposes. I want to see if I can use Android to do network testing so I dont have to carry a laptop with me.
Looking forward to seeing your results. I will post mine as well.
PS. How do you get Ubuntu to run on the Note?

Never thought of that. Now that I'm its a bit scary from a network security standpoint. Having a small easly hidden device hooked into an ethernet network and just running wireshark or ethereal. Lol

It is possible to get Ubuntu running via a virtual machine setup (emulating Ubuntu on the phone inside Android). The other possibility is a remote desktop option.
The two problems however:
1. Most USB devices require power - something I dont believe the phone puts out thru the USB micro port.
2. Getting direct access to the hardware (required for most of these types of tools to work) is not likely possible via a VM or Remote Desktop situation.
My guess is, this wont work, but Im a glass half full kind of guy.
A little OT but does anyone know if Ubuntu (via Ubuntu installer free app) works on SauRom?
Tried to get working but I couldn't start the shell. I'm thinking the bottleneck is the kernel, not sure if it allows multiple loops or something like that

1. I thought about the power requirements after I bought it and so far I haven't been able to find any data on how much power the phone can supply through the USB port but seeing how the MHL requires additional power I might have to get creative to get power to the wifi adapter.
2. As long as the phone recognizes the wifi adapter as a host I don't think I'll have any problems with it inside the ubuntu VM. If I do I might be able to do alittle kernel work to make it communicate properly.
I'm trying to be optimistic as I really want it to work. Plus if integrating the wifi adapter directly fails I have a back up plan... Arduino to the rescue.

I'm not an expert on all things linux, but the chroot method isn't a virtual machine, it should be full fledged linux on the hardware.
Android runs all processes in a VM. But anyways I have it all working.

I have all the needed drivers for my wifi adapter cross compiled one set for the current ICS and one for GB. The ICS you need to manually install the drivers from terminal and the GB is already included into my custom kernel. If anyone is interested let me know. At this moment I do not plan on putting it out in the public in the development forum...

[Q] Wired Tether

Is there free wired tethering available for this phone?
is there a free supported app?
The computer im using doesn't have a wireless network card( it's an old computer).
and im wondering if there is a way i can get my phone to be its internet until i get a card.
I want to turn it into a FTP server.
Any help that helps, THANKS
Relative to the wireless part. I have a couple of these that I got just for this type of purpose.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
Cheap, FAST and very handy to have around in the case someone brings over a computer without wireless access.
As for using your phone for the internet, that works good for browsing etc... but you will have a hard time getting your phone to provide services like service (FTP) since the IP is NAT'd....

The phone will definitely not be a permanent fix. I'll still want to use the phone haha, i just want to set it up and see how it goes first.
the router isn't that far away, but it's a floor above so it will be going through at least 1 wall...
and thanks ill look into that
would
http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/downloads/list
work? ill try it out in a bit but was just wondering if someone has tried before...
Edit: that links app does NOT work for the leaked ics kernel
I thought you could just plug the phone into the usb and select internet???
No verizon made a fee, id rather go though our guy's for wired tether you know, i just need to get a little usb wireless dongle thing then i guess
I use pdanet
Easytether works fine for free as long as you dint visit any secure sites

THANKS SO MUCH!
Glad to hear PDAnet works. I tried the Wired Tether on the Google Projects page with no luck on CleanROM 1.7.5 or CleanROM 4.2.2.
Seems to be a kernel issue I think the one from Google will work when we get aosp or cm working. Maybe the ics official release will let it work on sense roms. The PDA net app works fine currently.
I use ClockWorkMod Tether. Love it.

Note not being recognized by Mac

My Samsung Galaxy Note is not being recognized by my Mac. I have the CM10 Nightless ROM on it at the moment. I also have Android File Transfer installed on my Mac.
Why do you have any extra software installed on the mac? Get rid of that it should just pick it up after you mount it. Try different usb ports/cables. My GF's mac picks up my PA CM10 just fine. Try that?
Mac address issue in the CM rom ???
Check the Mac address field in your network settings in the rom to confirm that you have the correct Mac address......g

if you want to think about it that way sure... or you can think of it this way.
custom built pc to your liking, install win/lin/osx. SAVE TONS OF MONEY
OR
spend 2000$+ extra to have an apple stamp on your tower.
i dont see how buying a pc is downgrading when you can do so much more with it
thats like saying "you bought an android? whyd you downgrade from an iphone...*
well, after having pc's for 20 years, custom building most of them, BTW, and dealing with windows builds that ranged from horrible, to ok, I decided to go MAC in 2006; things were great at first, but the last 2 OSX releases, Lion, and now Mountain Lion have been major disappointments to me, let alone my disgust for the childish lawsuits and other bull that Apple is now focused on, instead of building better products..
I'll probably go back to windows machines, once windows 8 is fully out there..
BTW, my custom made PC's were always more than $2000.00!!
Sorry about hijacking this thread with PC "Stuff"!
2nd post in this thread will help you out

I would really look into using airdroid though I have used that since I first downloaded it , dont connect with cables anymore !!
I was afraid that this might turn into a PC vs Mac thread haha. I'll look into the over the air method when I get home. Thanks for all the suggestions and help

Its a known issue with JB and Mac. If you use TWRP go that route for a USB connection. Its really easy and a lot quicker than over the air.

What to do with my 3D?

I moved from the state's to Germany and am trying to find a good use for my 3D running Viper Rom since its Sprint CDMA and doesn't work in Europe. I currently have the HTC One X quad core.
I was kind of hoping USB OTG has been hacked to work on it so I could run it as a small pc (monitor mouse and keyboard) or something, but I could not find any info to get that working (searched and searched).
Its not worth me selling since it has a bad esn and only would sell for 100 USD or so. Then minus eBay and paypals fees. Bla bla... Too much work cor not enough pay..
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance!

OTG works fine on the Evo 3D if you use a kernel like ButteredToast that supports it.
You might also look into GrooveIP that uses Google Voice and works pretty well over WiFi and the international calls are pretty inexpensive over GV.
If you really want to use it as a mini PC there is a thread here that discusses how to run Ubuntu Linux on it.
And worse comes to worse, you can download some 3D movies over WiFi and connect it to a 3D TV via an MHL/HDMI adapter.
I plan to keep my Evo 3D's around for a while after I upgrade for these and other reasons, and the development for it is still pretty active for this device.

Ok, I tried the buttered toast kernel. What Rom do I need? Does that link point out everything that's needed?
I was going to try the google voice thing, but I couldn't set up a phone number since now I have no US cell number to confirm a text or something like that. I don't remember exactly because its been a little while since I tried it.
Thanks for your input!

The OP of the OTG thread has most of what you need to get it to work. Make sure you use an OTG adapter that will let you supply power of use an active USB hub since the Evo 3D doesn't provide power to the OTG device(s).
You can get a new US phone number from Google Voice when you sign up and it doesn't have to match your cell phone. GrooveIP will be able to receive calls on that number in addition to making outgoing calls.
Good luck!
