Hey guys
I've noticed if I'm in an app for a while and hit the home screen or go back to the launcher it refreshes. I see a blank screen (wallpaper only) and I can see the icons and dock get redrawn. I've had the galaxy note before this and that phone never did it. It takes between 2 and 3 seconds to redraw.
It happens with other launchers too.
Anyone know why? It's quite annoying.

Confirming. Maybe a software issue.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
My best guess would be that the system is low on resources and kills off the launcher. The launcher's OOM value might be too high.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
So best hope at this stage is a custom Rom which addresses the issue??
Sent from my GT-I9300T using XDA
Yeah, some sort of "keep launcher in memory" would be nice to have. We won't get this until we get better custom roms though.

Post to confirm as well. I have also some app lock ups.
This post solved the problem for me. Haven't had the Launcher reload since (Requires Root):

Try using Apex as that has a "keep in memory" option, Im on Omega v3.0 aswel which I advise all of you to do!
Good luck guys
Post to confirm im facing the same issue

Does anyone know if the Custom ROM 'Omega v4.0' for the Galaxy S3 has the option (like Apex Launcher) to KEEP IN MEMORY..?
The ONE and ONLY reason i want to change ROMs is because my homescreen widgets and icons are CONSTANTLY re-drawing whenever i exit an app, and its WINDING ME UP!
Does the same for any other launcher!!
Apex launcher (whilst kept in memory) seems to be better, but i would prefer the stock launcher so was thinking of changing to the Omega ROM.
Can the Omega v4.0 ROM be 'KEPT IN MEMORY'..?
No, it does not include a keep in memory function. You could try the SuperCharger script though to make your launcher hard to kill.

This works for me.........
Faster home screen scrolling; change value 256m > 128m ;
dalvik.vm.heapsize=128m
Force launcher to stay in memory; add to build.prop
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
Doubt it's placebo, but seems to be working Very little redraw with TW Launcher
Edit: Just make sure you still have ONE clear space as the last line after editing with the in-phone text editor and reboot for changes to stick.

Made these changes, been going for half hour so far and FINALLY noticing a difference! Time will tell obviously but for once things like exiting the Market (Play Store) arent making my launcher need to re-draw widgets and icons!

No problem at all.
Credit though to whoever first discovered the tweak, just sharing and trying to help out. I've previously cooked these tweaks (and others) into personal ROMs, and also found in allot of custom public released ROMs I've flashed on various devices here in XDA.
I don't think its placebo, and can see greatly reduced TW Launcher redraw. Clock/weather widget is much better.

I started a thread based on this tweak and later came to know that those build. Prop tweaks won't work on ics and hence deleted the thread. Personally I felt the redraw reduced to some extent, may be a placebo effect

Personally only tested with TW launcher. Seems to do a better job than without, but not always.
Were you using with TW or market launcher?
Secondly, did you use capitals (where required) and reboot after?
Placebo, who knows, all I can say it appears to lessen redraw on TW, never implied eliminate.

Confirming I also have this issue.
I've read some people saying the new firmware update should fix this issue. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
If not, then I will probably have to look into rooting my phone, getting a bit tired of freeing up RAM every 1½ day.
Perm solution is to increase the ram
That should be the reason why they increase the RAM from 1GB to 2GB
I will be doing it as soon as i can source the 2GB RAM from eBay.
Anyone know this?
1. firware upgrade does not fix this issue
2. if this doesn't happen on the S2 then there is no way this is a ram related issue. it's a software related issue maybe not managing ram correctly. but it can be fixed with a software solution.

Just wondering if the wicked rom can be changed to 4by4 icon grid rather than the 5by4 icon grid it came with.
Also it has barely any samsung apps/widgets wondering if particular apps such as readers hub and widgets such as the stock weatger widget can be reinstallled some how. These were things that i used before rooting and installing this rom.

yes, go to menu - launcher and set the desired grid size.
yes, samsung apps caan be downloaded and readded again, check the forum it usual has samsung apps on first vpage as a zip file.
You should have read the rom description before using as custom roms try to eliminate all samsung apps. you should then stay with a stock type rom which has your required apps.

Thats not completely true about no settings in TWLauchers. My ROM comes with TWLauncher which lets me put 5 icons on the bottom tray and TW4Launcher which lets you change the amount of rows in the app draw.
First and second screenshot TW4 app draw settings, third screenshot TWLauncher 5 icon bar.
Has Any1 done this i dowoaded and flashed the hubs now when i try to use readers hub i have to install the book reader. However it says server will be available soon i mean what gives before custom roming it it always updated and installed instantly is this an app error or a rom error.
Thanks

Not if the camera isnt modded or the ROM doesnt have a mod file you can flash via CWM to do so.
Could you elaborate cooza i just want to have the option to turn of shutter sound stock rom could. What do i need to flash.

yes, siyah is good for battery life.
If you are rooted use CWM to flash the zip file after copying it to your sd card. cwm- recovery-install zip- choose zip from sdcard-yes install, wit for it to finish, reboot phone.
other wise use ODIN, flash the tar file.

If you are on stock ROM you cant turn it off.If you are on a custon ROM the dev normally modifys various apps so that you have more options or you can download a file to flash and modify each app personally as you choose. If you are on stock then nothin,if your on a custon ROM ask the Dev or on the ROMs thread if there is a Zip file or CWM file that can mod the cam to turn off the sound.

The problem is that your phone sometimes runs out of memory so it closes the launcher to make up for it. What launcher are you using?
when i check my free RAM, i always see more than a hundred.. I actually tried ADW, ADW Ex, Launcher Pro Plus, and Go Launcher EX.. all the same.. it just randomly hangs up and FC..
EDIT: I think I solved the problem. Probably because of the script conflict. hehe I had Lagfree and at the same time the SDcardSpeedFix. I just deleted the SDcardSpeedFix. My phone became fast (I guess).

Yeah try even 4 bg procceses . Have you noticed that when you exit a game you wait around 5-10 secs to launcher to show. When you press teh app drawer every app is there. That means that the launcehr is succesefully locked by (ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1) but when you game you have 1bg process witch is the launcher. Then you have gapps on background there are 2 and smthing other till they are 3 bg process. so that why i use 3 teh standart limit is 1 so the launcher is locked but its to active... if you get it xD. Also try ading Zipalign apks at boot. It will also help for more free ramhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266735

Still does it whether on custom roms or whether you apply any and all the tweaks on the forum, it also happens with all the launchers.
Serious problem that needs to be addressed.
You will also notice multitasking is a complete no no as all the other apps reload too.
More ram is needed or many many less running apps.
Go launcher doesn't seem to redraw if you can stand such an old launcher.
Peace.

Couldn't disagree more, I don't get any redraws using checkrom. And when it comes to go launcher, it's probably the most bloated and clunky browser there is albeit highly customizable. Nova and Apex are probably just a good as each other. Touchwiz seems to use less resources than other launchers but it is lacking in features.

I don't think so.
The only options would be to flash newer firmware manually with Odin (may our may not help) or use market launcher such as nova or apex. They have option in settings to keep launcher in memory. It can help, but not always prevent launcher getting killed off.

hi guys,
I got my S3 about 3 weeks ago, (a noob in android) i recently flashed the rom to an unbranded version because i hate the bloatware but one thing i noticed is that my ram is really high on the device and when scrolling through the homescreens there's sometimes a delay in response or goes to the next screen with lag. when i go to task manager my ram is always above 500mb of 779mb. Even when i clear the memory it goes down to about 400 but then comes back up.
what could be the issue. don't really have anything running in the background. i did download go keyboard and go sms pro but I'm pretty sure that is not the cause of it. it even happened when i had the branded version of the firmware installed.
any ideas?
Thanks

RAM usage is supposed to be high. Please read the link in my signature. The lag must be something else. Possible drawing issue on whatever launcher you have.

The GPU may not be very good on the sIII, the GPU controls video, scrolling, animations, ect. But my guess would be that its just a badly coded ROM. Go on the forms for that ROM and see if its a common issue.

you need to be rooted, edit /system/build.prop using root explorer or es explorer (the /system file system needs to be mounted read/write first)
you have to reset permissions from cwm (clockworkmod), again this needs root

So I restarted the phone again and it didn't give the problem again and the movement does seem much better now thanks for that. I so know it comes to my next question that when you I exit an app the home screen redraw, and this is why I'm wondering why is my ram usage so high when I'm not using much I can the background or not using any launchers. I'm using beautiful widgets super clock screencast button and spanner month with a live background surely those can't use up 500mb ram can it?

I use stock lfb with APEX launcher, I get no issues with lags, I use siyah 1.3.7 (for uv and better sound) I've removed loads of Samsung bloatware and phone is great
