This means our Photon will be 4G WORTHLESS come Mid 2012, since we all just got the Phone and are connected to a 2 year contract, we are Screwed. This also gives Sprint the OUT it wants as far as Unlimited. Those who get these NEW LTE Phones will be surprised when they DON'T HAVE Unlimited Data. Very Sneaky Sprint. Assholes.
Sneaky? This news has been out for months, before the Photon, GS2 and 3D even came out. People could have waited. They have to make a change over sometime.
Zooomg no wayz new 4geeees?!?!?!
WTH. People ARE Supposed to wait on Sprint to make up heir minds. We Photon owners just Grabbed our Ankles. Bottom Line.
Well I am still under my 30 days on my photon so I'm just gonna take it back and the 200 dollars worth of accessories I bought for it....then lock into the simply everything plan and get grandfathered in

Nah, if you have WiMax coverage now, you will for a good long while. Probably until the hardware at the cell site takes a crap and they decide not to replace it.
If you don't currently have WiMax coverage, then you are waiting on LTE coverage.
By the time you actually get it you'll be close to an upgrade, and if not you could force the issue with CS and have them move your upgrade date so you can get an LTE device.
And if you are in one of the large markets that doesn't have WiMax yet, but will be getting LTE way before an upgrade date - like 8/2012 - (Do those exist?) I am really sure that Sprint would move your upgrade to get an LTE device since you bought a useless WiMax device in your area. Sprint has really good Customer Support and will do you right on it.
Now if your like me and live in the sticks, and barely get 3G, and can only get 4G with an hour drive....I'm some one who is a little upset by the fact that there is no 3G upgrades in the works.
#1, From what I read, Photon will still work.
#2, I had my Evo for a year and Photon like August 2nd, I have used 4G exactly THREE times. I know, I know, YouTube, Videos, Movies, Netflix...........I have a 55" and 40" LCD TV's, Laptop, Gaming Desktop, and 160Gb PS3. I really have no need to kill my battery.............(I just bought a Truck. GPS on 4G I might need, but I just purchased Car Dock so Battery is not an issue.!
Doesn't the photon support the 1900mhz frequency? Why would it not be compatible with Lte?

Because Sprint would prefer you buy a new phone then pay to write a new radio for it.

Just because Sprint is moving from WiMax doesn't mean you'll stop getting the service. They are just going to stop selling new devices at the end of 2012, and stop funding Clearwire for new markets. Current devices will continue to use the WiMax they do now.
This really doesn't worry me because I am not under contract on my photon. I am greatful for sprint actually doing something to make their network better but at this point I think it's too late for some people. If I had to guess 3g is not going to get better anytime soon. The focus is LTE and will continue to be.
Wifi calling would be a much better choice for myself to hold me over. I have a airave but that things is huge and drains a lot of electricity. I don't have the little airave because I wanted more than just the option to make calls. I wanted to be able to pull in data, which it does pretty well. I shouldn't have to have that thing running just to get cell reception in my house. I'll take the wifi calling for now and have the hope that LTE will come quicker than expected.
I think the biggest problem this will bring is the support for sprints current lineup. Why would motorola continue to dump money into developing for it's current Photon and same goes with the other manufacturers. If the phones cease to work on the new network, why would motorola keep making "older phone" current and up to date.
Y'all need to just chill. WiMAX isn't going anywhere for quite awhile. If you bothered to listen to the announcement you'd know that.
WiMAX = Clear
LTE = Sprint
If you want to know if your WiMAX phone is going to work you should probably look at what Clear is doing and stop dogging Sprint for building a BETTER 4G network in ADDITION to Clear's.
Not worried, by then I'll be on another device, sorry but I switch pretty often. Although this photon is just impressive so I might just keep it until I am convinced that I need to replace it, and the SGS2 is not it. Neither is another phone on sprint, nope not the iPhone either.
I probably won't be changing until a Quad Core phone comes out. At which point I may go ahead and do that. But for now. I'm square on the phone I have.

Obviously you haven't been reading the news about Sprint and LTE. It was no secret that Sprint was going LTE especially when Wimax was not expanding to new markets anymore. If you watched the Oct 7th conference, they said that Wimax will still be around and in fact they will continue to sell Wimax devices throughout 2012 and there will be support for Wimax for another couple years (my guess is 2015). In 2013, we will all be eligible for an upgrade and at that point I will grab a LTE phone since by Aug 2013, LTE on sprint should have a ton of markets.
Right now there is no news on which markets will get LTE starting mid 2012. I expect Sprint will announce those initial deployed markets sometime in April-May next year. Hopefully the initial deployment includes the big markets who do not current have Wimax support such as San Diego, Phoenix, New Orleans, Detroit, Oklahoma City, etc.
Yeah. San Diego would be great. But. I am not gonna hold my breathe.

No, easier to pick the points I want to complain about and ignore the facts so I can harp about getting screwed. If you want a screw job, try to get Verizon to set a price anywhere near what many Sprint owners pay.
FACTS:
- WiMax will be available for years, possibly beyond Sprint's involvement
- LTE is 'scheduled for completion' in mid-2013, around the time most Photon owners will be out-of-contract anyway, if it mattered in the first place
- The majority of users don't get a 4G signal to start with
RESULT:
-Sprint is taking my not-4G-service away? Darn.
I think what everyone is missing is the effect this will have on your phones value. I personally keep my phones looking brand new so I can make a profit when it's time to upgrade. I personally haven't paid for a phone in a long time because I sell the old to get the new.
With this upcoming change this will hurt value and will make all phones running 4g look like old news. Sure there are people out there that have no clue about 4g 3g and just want a phone but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot that do know about it.
For instance, if you were on a carrier and they got bought out and your phone was working just fine on your original carrier and then all of a sudden the new carrier says your phone will be obsolete once we swich over to another band...What would you say?? Would this be a simple oh well i'll be good for a little while longer and then I'll just buy another phone. I think there would be more people complaining then. Sprint did the old bait and switch and I can't believe the amount of people who sit back supporting it. They increased the cancel fee, the upgrade fee, took away upgrades yearly, cancelled discounts for premium customers at stores, taking away 4g next year and providing crappy 3g service. What will it take for some people to realize that your being bent over. I just don't get why some people just take it laying down. So we paid the $10.00 fee to build the 4g service (which I know it's not a 4g fee)..which we all know it was and a bunch of bull was pushed to make it look otherwise. Now they want you to build their LTE service because the F'd up.
I know someone will say, well why are you with sprint then? Well that might be changing soon. Also I have to pay a cancellation fee and that is not fun and that's why there is a delay up to this point. I posted earlier in this thread and after really thinking about all the crap sprint is doing, I think I just woke up. I had my eyes open before but now they are wide open.
The photon is a good phone but I really think at this point the manufacturers will be focused on building LTE phones and will dump support on these now aging phones. Motorola is going to be the leader in LTE and is working on building the first LTE for sprint. Why are they going to keep throwing all these updates at the photon?
For everyone's sake, I hope LTE doesn't end up killing the 100k download speeds we get on our unlimited plans from sprint now. Someone's going to have to pay for the big switch going on.
That's true. But I personally keep my old phones so that I can have spares/backups. Etc. That's just me though.

Depends on how long you plan on having the phone. If you are just gonna switch from the 3D to the SGS2 or Gnex, well there isn't really a big difference. But if you are looking to upgrade to something other than those 3 really soon, then you might as well hold on to the 3D and then upgrade to something like the One X, or SGS3 (whenever that comes) because those would be real upgrades.
Do NOT get a Gnex. It's coming May 15 (or june was it?) but it will have hardware from june last near (similar hardware as Evo 3D).
It's your choice to use the SGSII, I personally like it better, but when/if you get a new phone, wait for the wave of phones to be released.
The GSII and GNex still have better hardware than the E3D, though.
Their chipsets are much more powerful.
As for me.. If I were staying with Sprint, I'd stick with the E3D for now. And probably wait til Autumn to buy a new LTE device on Sprint. Heck, if you have the patience, wait for Sprint's 2nd gen LTE devices next Spring.
But.. I just bought a Galaxy Note. Waiting for it in the mail. As soon as it arrives, I'm having my Sprint plan terminated. Gonna go for T-Mobile's 30$/mo plan. Unlimited texting, unlimited data* and 100 minutes.
I plan on using wifi calling when I'm home and Google Voice when I'm out and about on T-Mobile's network.
I'm really tired of Sprint's rising costs and sliding quality. Back when I signed with them years ago, their service was on par with Verizon's and their plans were amazing deals (the mandatory 10$ premium data fee was when things started to change). But now.. They've made such a convoluted mess of things, with the Nextel purchase onwards, and their Network Vision plan is where all their eggs are right now. Their infrastructure has simply not been maintained properly.
Maybe if they manage to pull it together, I'll come back to them. But for now, I'm going monthly and picking and choosing where/what I want for whatever price I consider fair.
*This particularly T-Mobile plan is unlimited data but throttled after 5gb. T-Mobile's faux-G speeds are as fast or faster than all the other 4G/LTE offerings on the other carrier networks.
I ordered the international Note so I'm hoping work arounds are found soon so as to utilize T-Mobile's HSPA+ network but even their EDGE speeds are faster than Sprint's 3G!
Anyways, do what you feel is the most beneficial action for yourself.
As for me, I'm about to start saving 70$~ a month and going off contract!
Keep it till the HTC Two series comes out

Ok so my EVO 3D shattered today. So I need to get a new phone. I don't want a replacement I'm tired of the 3VO. So here's my dilemma (I'm currently on Sprint, obviously):
• My contract is up so I can choose to renew or start a new contract elsewhere.
• I like the Sprint Galaxy Nexus, I can get that for $200 but there is no LTE in Orlando (Or anywhere for that matter)
• I think the At&t One X is beautiful (love the white). I can get this for $150 (Radioshack) and the there's LTE in Orlando.
• I think the HTC EVO LTE is hideous (color and material combination). I can get this for $200, but again no LTE.
• I've been following the Galaxy S III rumors since I can remember and I like what I see from the leaks. But the truth is we won't get this phone, in the US, until at least 3 months from the Thursday announcement.
So do you guys think I should get one of the current phones available, if so, which one? Or should I be patient and wait till Thursday and see what the S III announcement is all about in terms of availability?
*One thing to keep in mind is that I already have an At&t contract with two lines on it. Maybe I can add a 3rd and get a nice family plan price?
It looks like it depends on your current sprint service. If you are happy with the current sprint service you get then get the Galaxy Nexus or the Evo 4G LTE. If you are not happy with sprint and like AT & T more then get the One X.
id like the one x, but no sd and no way to upgrade the battery for extended power is putting me off, but in the other hand, the sex appeal of it, is drawing me towards it, my missus has the s2, and i dont really like it
Thank for responding guys. I'm happy with Sprint but the lack of LTE coverage is turning me away.
Markospena. I'm in almost the same dilemma minus the at&t option. I am on a sprint family plan and don't plan on going to another carrier. Not having LTE isn't a big issue for me. I'm just torn between phones. My first smartphone was the EVO. Then I traded it in for the 3VO. Right now I'm between the GNEX and the 4G LTE. The GNEX is technically old hardware by now but the pure vanilla experience has me leaning in the direction of the GNEX. I've always ran cyanogenmod on both the EVO AND 3D. So I think I should just go with the GNEX. then I start thinking about its basically last years phone. So I don't know what to do. I'm not big on sense but sense 4.0 does seem to be a lot simpler and less bloated. Ughhhh haha I feel your pain.

One X, easy choice, battery is decent, your getting a day easy.
@anthrofear ...
You should take a look at AT&T's family plan. I didn't think Sprint really had one. I know with unlimited, another line is $10 less...But I don't exactly consider that a group plan. I'm in the same boat with this difficult decision but surprisingly I am leaving Sprint (early) and going to AT&T for the HTC One X. A big factor in it to be honest is the lack of 4G on Sprint for the HTC EVO LTE and the ugly design of the phone. Last, AT&T's family plan is actually going to save me about $10-20 a month. Right now I'm at $117/mo with Sprint because the EVO comes with $10 extra premium fee...Which is total crap. I can count on one hand the times I've used 4G because when doing so, the battery drains faster.
IF Sprint continues to charge a premium for 4G phones at $10/mo. ... They're horrible. Because their 4G network is mess and the EVO 4G LTE won't fall back like it will on AT&T from LTE to HSPA+. Plus AT&T has more LTE coverage than Sprint at the moment. Clearwire was a real bad idea for Sprint. I like Sprint don't get me wrong, but my usage patterns didn't prove to need an unlimited plan. 3GB and 5GB (on AT&T) is a real good amount of data. You really need to be streaming a LOT to hit that. I'm averaging 1GB/mo. on Sprint.
So if changing carriers makes a decision easier for you, don't be afraid of it. I was quite surprised that AT&T came out cheaper for two lines for my wife and myself. Plus they are unlimited too - just not to land lines...But the minutes roll over. So... I'm actually left to wonder what Sprint's edge is now. As loyal as I was...I want to actually use the phone I'm buying and save a couple hundred a year while doing so.
...And now...No fugly two tone black HTC One X and I get it Sunday
I should also note that my decision for the One X over the Nexus is that the Nexus's blacks are great and I believe turning off pixels promotes battery life, but the reviews show the One X with better (slightly) battery life, the camera is better (while I don't expect great photos, any help is great with smartphones for stability/low light - not for resolution) and most important is that the Nexus' whites look very blue to me. The tint is terrible and I'm not sure my eyes would ever adjust. I noticed it right away in the Sprint store without even holding my other phone up.
The other reason is that Google does not officially support the Sprint version of the Nexus. They are only choosing to work with the GMA versions. So with the Nexus on Sprint or Verizon you would be at the mercy of Samsung. The Nexus would be worth considering on a different carrier if my above mentioned issues are no issue for you.
One x of course

As it turns out I had to pick up a new number when I moved to AT&T today. So I still have my EVO on Sprint and the HTC One X on AT&T for a little bit.
I downloaded the speedtest.net app. Now I'm worried.
Sprint on 3G
154ms ping
798Kbps down
592Kbps up
Sprint on 4G (WiMax, not LTE)
75ms ping
7880Kbps down
1486Kbps up
AT&T on 4G (HSPA+ the fallback)
87ms ping
277Kbps down (though another test I saw 1100+ but it's unstable and takes a while to start, the graph in the app is erratic)
up? Who knows because it won't even start.
I did have LTE coverage outside so I'll run the test again in a different spot.
Pretty embarrassing that Sprint's 3G is actually faster...
Both tests were to the same server at the same time in the same location.
This really has me regretting the AT&T idea to be honest. I imagine I can just cancel but... I'll give it a fair shake and make my mind up before the return period.
I'm speechless. My major complaint with Sprint was that they wouldn't have LTE...But their 3G is pretty good! I know that'll vary based on where I am and all...So I'll do more testing from various areas.
sad face.
I regret leaving T-Mobile US for Sprint
I would RUN to the HTC One X
I stand (happily) corrected! I went outside and got 26.41Mbps down and 17.10Mbps up with 98ms ping.
WOW! I even saw a spike, in one of the tests, to 3100 some Kbps nearly 30Mbps!
I will never go back to non LTE. Which means even if data costs more on AT&T (I'll have to see how much data I actually end up using) ... It has the LTEs where Sprint does not =( and will not until this phone is old.
The HTC One X is the one you want =)

Thanks for posting this. I'm also in the same boat and was just going to wait for the White EVO 4G LTE to come out and make a decision.
However the fact still remains, I will not have LTE and not until maybe the end of this year if I stay with Sprint. I just checked my data and I barely go over 1gb and I feel that I'm always using sprints 3G/4G. I guess I'm not on it as much as I thought.
I'm now on Facebook trying to see how friends with at&t here like their service. It's a hard decision, since I only pay $50 a month for everything with Sprint. Decisions, Decisions.
Ok so my EVO 3D shattered today. So I need to get a new phone. I don't want a replacement I'm tired of the 3VO. So here's my dilemma (I'm currently on Sprint, obviously):

bump please Really undecided
Oh I know how you feel.
With the exception of not having a busted Evo 3d and liking the Evo LTE's design I am in the exact position as you. My Contract is up at the end of May and originally was thinking about the Evo 4G LTE. But am not liking HTC's recent history on Update wait times and the even more baffling root stance makes me think the Nexus is the way to go. But I do not like it's camera at all and am really sensitive to the pentile display on it. The S3 has the same pentile display and I am not sure how the physical home button on the S3 is going to work?
I really do not know what to do. Thankfully now that the Virgin/Virtuous rom leak has breathed new life into the 3D I can now get the better of my new device lust as half of that was based on lack of solid ICS build for the 3D.
Maybe I will enjoy the 3D for sometime now.
HTC Evo 4g LTE vs. Samsung Galaxy S3
Well, I am in the same predicament as you. I currently have the Evo 4g, and my contract expired May 1st. I have been so close to pre-ordering the new Evo 4g LTE, but stop myself every time because I am torn against the upcoming S3!
Now first of all, let me just state that Sprint's voice and 3g network in Chicago leaves MUCH to be desired! I have definitely contemplated switching to Verizon, but I enjoy unlimited data way too much, and I have been hearing great things about Sprint's Network Vision which should be launching in my area within the next month or so. So, I think I'll stick around for another 2 years... That was another hard decision that I won't get in to.
I love my original Evo and everything about it. I have even kept the original Sense ROM because I love that too. That being said, I was excited to learn of the May 18th release for the new Evo 4g LTE. I love the metal casing on the new LTE Evo, the dual-core Snapdragon CPU, the kickstand, the camera abilities, the HD Voice, and the ability to have access to the new LTE network.
I am also hearing that the new Samsung Galaxy S3 is going to be a game changer. It boasts a quad-core CPU (although I've heard that the Evo's dual-core is just as good, if not better), the new Siri-like voice command abilities, along with a bunch of new exciting features which are mainly software based.
Another deciding factor is when this device will ever be released on Sprint. Being a tech junkie, I am very anxious to get my hands on a new device (since I'm already contract-free). Being that there is no defined release date on this device concerns me. I look st how long the HTC ONE has been out in the market, and Sprint is just getting its flavor now. What if the new S3 is released to Verizon or AT&T months before Sprint... I want it now!
So I'm concerned of a few things... If I order the new Evo and get it before the end of the month, (and LTE is not available yet) am I screwing myself by burning the Clearwire bridge? I don't think I could handle using my 49kbs 3g connection. Will I be kicking myself if the S3 is released for Sprint in a month? Should I be concerned about HTC's slow bug and patch releases? Is the S3 even worth the wait? Will I miss having a wall charger for backup batteries that I carry with me every day (will I even need them anymore)? I am so confused, and don't want to have any regrets!
Does anyone have any input to help sway my decision?
Thanks in advance!
So I MAY get the HOX+ when the funds are available. I'm a broke ass college student and I am really interested in getting the phone to help out more around here. However, I'm deciding on what to get. I'm on T-Mobile USA and they are almost done refarming their network in the Chicago market so I can get HSPA+ "4G" on it. T-Mobile should also be rolling out LTE next year as well.
Int'l model - Logically, much more development since it is in multiple countries
AT&T model - Warranty will be easier to do if anything happens and it'll have LTE.
Steer me to the right direction. Please and Thank you.
I don't know how it goes in the US but in Germany LTE is not widely available yet, and also the costs are much higher than with 3G.
I live in the city and would have LTE available here at home and when out and about, but it would be 27€ more per month for 24 month. So, my usage profile would just not make sense. I travel a lot on the high spped train ICE and 98% of the time there is only 2G available anyways, with 3G only in stations along the track when it stops. 3G is more than sufficient when I am out around town.
So, for me LTE is a waste of money (27€ x24month contract=648€ on top of my regular contract)
If the costs are closer to a regular 3G contract in the US I would go with LTE of course, just to have the latest!

I originally was going to go with the Nexus 4 and just had it delivered but I ended up going with the One X+ (AT&T). I was the first to say LTE wasn't needed, but after a few days with the One X+, I don't know if I could go back. It is just so stupid fast, if it is in your area, I would strongly consider the AT&T version just for that...
Plus if I remember right a few forum members pitched in to get Lloir a AT&T One X+ for deving, so there should be some stuff on the way for it.

Even if I got either HOX+, I will be stuck on 2G until T-Mobile changes part of their network.
LTE isn't out yet for T-Mobile so I can't mention on the price structure for it.
What I am really worrying about it warranty. If it's a manufacturer defect, I can send it to HTC in Texas to get it repaired. I'm pushing towards the AT&T model since it is also a bit cheaper by ~$40
You should get the AT&T one. That would be the best for development in general. Especially for you US boys

I am getting the AT&T HOX+ over the weekend. The only difference between the two is LTE, but you have TMobile. If warranty is a big deal for you, get the AT&T.

I really wanna try LTE. T-Mobile has a great network so I know LTE will be a killer!
I guess I must've missed that lol. Didn't know they were pitching in for the AT&T model.

You should get the AT&T one. That would be the best for development in general. Especially for you US boys

Int'l models are usually more popular since it is widely available. That's why I hope the dev would be good.

Yeah. I was thinking about it. May just get the AT&T model when prices drop and I get more cash. I'm still far away from my goal in buying it lol

I got shut out of the N4 on Google's release day. But I had an S3 (sold it) and have LTE in my area so I picked up the One X+.
I am SO glad I did. It is one awesome device. Super fast and smoother than the S3. Better screen, camera, etc.
It made me realize that once you have access to LTE it makes no sense to revert back to hspa+. Take advantage of the technology as we are paying for the monthly service.
If I was not located in a AT&T LTE area, I would still pull the trigger because they are launching new markets like crazy. I have had LTE for months and they never announced it was available. They light up markets for testing sometimes months before they make it official and users.
Hope this helps.
The AT&T version seems to be the best bet! LTE is widespread
Thanks everyone!
Now, the issue is the money.

I'm considering the same thing too. It looks T-mobile will deploy the LTE on AWS band same as AT&T, so this phone is more "future-proof" than Nexus 4. How do I get it carrier unlocked if i get one from AT&T store though?
Those of us state side need a DEV that has our device. If someone wants to start a "fund raiser" thread to get you an AT&T HOX+ you can count me in for $50.
Edit: I also have a line that is early upgrade eligible so that would be $100 off the device if that helps. If we can get the funds up I have a way I can get this too you Hasoon2000. Just PM me.

I'd hate to burst your bubble. I'm not really a ROM dev. I know some basics. If you guys want me to learn and have it as a device to practice on, I wouldn't mind. However, do not expect quick results.

Last time I checked. XDA didn't give out recognised dev titles to people who only knew the basics I think your being a tad modest lol

Honestly if you were to start a donate post many would help you get one for your anti brick noob toolkit that has saved many from bricking their devices. You have contributed greatly to the android community and well deserving of the help, I myself even though not a noob have used it in the past for the convenience of it alone.

It would be selfish if I made that type of thread. If you guys believe in it, you guys can do it for me. I'll just wait to save up money or when the price drops.

I agree with this. The person looking for the device should NEVER start the asking. Nothing but trouble. Seen it before.

I completely agree. That's why I said if people would want to make a thread for me, then I'm fine with it. However, I won't ask people to give me money.
