i did format the usb thinking it was the sd and i screwed myself

Mount storage to your PC and download a program called Recuva. Might give you a chance at recovering files but no guarantees unfortunately.

i have downloaded recuva but for some reason my pc is not picking up the phone as a drive and the program will not recognize it.

Try another computer.

Does Recuva work on USB mass storage or MTP devices? I thought that was for local drives only.

External or internal storage? If there were stored on microsd card, google Aeaseus Data Recovery, plug in the sd card to your computer and let the software do the magic

I'm guessing it was the internal, which is why I don't think Recuva would work on it by just plugging the phone into the PC via USB.
MicroSD on the other hand, might have some options.

[Q] Micro SD

Not sure if this is the correct place for this thread but I recently purchased a 32GB Micro SD and it has an issue when I go to write stuff to it via USB from phone or adapter into front of PC.
When I put things onto it only certain things stay. For example, when I copy my music folder # - Bs get written on it and if I try to put on pictures nothing happens.
It goes through the process as if it is writing the files but then they go away whenever I remove the device.
Any ideas or thoughts?!?!?
THANKS!
It may be a faulty sd

If you bought a cheap off-brand card, it's probably just the fact that it's a crappy product. If it's a well known product that gets good reviews, it's probably a defect.
Try formatting the card and see if that helps.

It's a SanDisk 32GB.. I formatted it to FAT32. I don't know if that the correct format or not. Heard anything about SanDisk?

What do you mean by format it in mobile phone? How do I do this?

It's in Settings somewhere. Browse around the options - it'll be in a menu titled storage or something similar, or possibly in about phone if there's storage info there.
You should also be able to do it from recovery.

Question about Storage...

So I stuck my 16gb card in my Note, and when I go to storage I have SD storage (obvious), USB Storage 10.xx gb free, and system storage 1.88gb free
wtf is "usb storage" and how does this phone work. Does this mean I have like 10gb of random storage I can use and about 2 gigs I can use on apps? can I use the "usb storage" for apps and stuff too?
I are confused on this issue.
anyone know?
The note comes with 16gb storage ..10 as mass storage,4 as system, and 2 for applications.
You can then add a microsd card to enlarge the mass storage size, up to 32gb more I believe.

So the "USB Storage" is basically like an internal SD card?

Yeah it makes no sense, I can't figure out what it does.
Yes that's what it is...non removable storage...that you transfer files to over USB connection.

So it's got 2 gb free of application storage, 11 gb free of internal storage (like the galaxy nexus, or iPhone) and an SD slot too, lol, what a crazy phone.

Can't mount External SD Card

I've tried my S3 with 3 types of card now, 2gb SanDisk, 16gb Kingston and a 32gb Samsung Ultra Mobile. Each of varying classes.
I have used countless ROMS from stock to CM10 and AOKP/AOSP and I can't get the option to mount my card in the storage menu to highlight.
I have formatted them on my laptop as Fat32 and exFat but neither have worked yet they have worked in other Galaxy handsets.
Can any of you guys think of something I need to do to solve it or is it a case of a faulty phone?
Thanks in advance

If the card works with other GS3 but not yours then it is very high possibility your GS3 is faulty. Send it back to Samsung.

Tried it in different phone's and formatted it again but still didn't work???
The s3's faulty for sure. Get an exchange.
Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and send it back. If I get a chance I'll see if I can get someone to try it in their S3.

i have the same prob
Got my 64GB working
I upgraded from 32GBPNY to 64GB SanDisk. Couldn't mount the 64. Tried many things, but in the end, I formatted the 64 to ExFat because it became damaged and I don't have the fat32 option on my mac. Next I put in the 32, and made sure it was readable and mount/unmounted twice, just to make sure, then I put in my 64. After I saw details (card cap, and available), I went to the dev options and set "protect external SD" to on. Rebooted to Recovery and backed-up to ex sd. Once the back up completed I rebooted, went into the settings / more tab / storage. I am now able to mount and unmount at will. Hope this helps!

Assume you still cant place files larger than 4GB on the sdcard?

Tried to copy over a 9gb movie, no go obviously. :\ Given no expansion SD slot, there is no way to work around this is there?
Doubt it. Storage is formatted using FAT file system which has a 4 gig file limit.

It is not formatted in fat. It is ext3 I believe that's why we don't have usb mass storage.

You could attempt zipping files in your computer and then unzip them in the phone. Alternatively, i heard that OTG is possible which will allow USB to be hooked up.

For those of you that are looking for extra storage, you might consider checking out this project of Kickstarter before it ends. This adapter allows you to use a microsd card with your One and also comes with a Micro USB to USB adapter to connect to your computer for file transfers. The adaptor is small and has been confirmed to work on the One. I've got one on order now. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/andyfei/mini-microsd-reader-for-android-smartphones-and-ta
just picked one up in case. thanks man
9gb movie... Wow, want to use every pixel on that screen huh?
That kickstarter project is definitely your best bet. Or a similar usb otg cable and a usb drive.

ext3 supports files much larger than 4GB. If the phone won't let you copy a 9GB file to it then it must be another problem. And UMS is discouraged by Google I think as it doesn't allow concurrent storage access to both apps and the computer attached though USB.
When Samsung added JB to the Note 2, the MTP driver blocked copying files >4GB. They seem to have fixed it on the SGS4 as I just finished copying a 4.3GB movie file to it.
split the file up
MTP is pretty awful; if you're at all comfortable with the command line, use adb instead and save yourself some trouble.

Can't see SD Card

Hi guys,
All the sudden noticed I can't see my SD card on my phone.
Plugged it into my Linux machine and it said it couldn't read the device and my Windows box wants me to reformat it. On the S3 it says the card is blank or the file type isn't supported.
Any suggestions?
format it
I'm trying to recover the photos from it though.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Unlikely you will. The file system is corrupt. You can't even mount it without formatting it.
Sorry dude, most likely it's all gone.
Tip for the future. Use foldersync to backup files to online storage or a computer that's always on.
...or dropbox auto upload...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Ok thanks. You think if I reformat and then use a tool like recuva I might be able to get some stuff back?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Maybe. These programs work independently of the file system. Depends if just the fs was corrupt or the data too.
Prepare yourself for it not working though
