[Q] Suitable rooted kernel for LP4 ICS...? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
So... a little while back I updated my SGS2 to the official ICS through Telstra.
It is an LP4 kernel, and I looked around for a rooted version of this to suit my new firmware... never found one so I tried rooting using LPS - which worked.
After a little while I am starting to notice some strange and very frustrating behaviour (frequent reboots, bad battery life, lagging/freezing, etc). I am not sure if the LPS kernel is to blame, but I am just wondering if someone can please advise me if there is a more suitable rooted kernel which matches LP4, or if someone can let me know where i can download the official LP4 kernel (telstra) so I can flash it back and see if it fixed my issues.
Thanks for any help.

Factory reset, try root method with out insecure kernel.

Looks pretty good thanks man. I would rather just flash back to stock LP4 instead of factory reset.
Any idea where i can get the stock kernel?
Thanks again man.

Yup that's the one,
And if you can't find the kernel, guess you have to flash again

thanks for the reply mate.
i hate to pester... but can you please break it down for me step by step on how to do this?
Ive tried a bunch of different things but i cannot get K-tool to find my .ZIP file (the one I downloaded from that link). Do i need to extract from the .ZIP file? Rename? Where do i put it on the sdcard? etc.
Rookie questions i know - but im struggling to find a good guide/tutorial.
thanks mate.
Also... will i loose root if i flash this way? There was another root method i have used... where i flashed the insecure kernel, then flashed the secure (original/stock) one over the top with certain settings and it allowed me to maintain root.
thanks again.

I think root will be ramined after flashing the stock kernel from K-tool or CWM manager,
you have to unzip the file until you get "Zimage" file, be carefull when you handle this, dont mixup with any earler zimage file which may already be on your SDcard or PC, because the file name is same "Zimage" for all the kerels once its extracted,
before flashing the Stock Kernel, you dump your current Kernel with K-tool, you will find a "Zimage" file on the root of SD card, cut and paste that from SD-card to another safe location, inside any folder..
then paste downloaded and extracted Zimage of the Stock kernel, and select flash..
you will be able to flash rooted kernels from CWM Manager (Zimage) again..

thanks again for the help ZACQ8.
Followed your instructions, flashed the alternate kernel, maintained root. Magic.
Now ive just got to monitor the system behaviour and see if i can notice any improvement.
Thanks so much dude.

Anyone know how to do this with an unrooted LP4 telstra phone?

Gday mate,
I did as follows....
Root using the LPS kernel following the instructions in this thread (Instructions - ODIN (long)).
Then flash back to original LP4 kernel using ZACQ8's instructions as above.
The idea is that you temporarily flash to an arbitrary kernel - simply to obtain root. The you flash back to your original kernel to ensure your ROM/firmware doesnt get bothered by a different kernel.
Cheers.

Hi [email protected]
I just used kies to upgrade my firmware and noticed that I have similar build as you SGS2
I am also using Testra
My build after upgrade:

Can you please help me with this, your input would be appreciated.
Are you using the kernel listed under your description or is it the LP4 and what is your experiance ( modem effectivness)
I also installed and tried ktool 1.56 and when opening the app gave errors (no root access)
Did you have the same issue.
My aim is also to stay with this Firmware but get root access. any thoughts

You don't even need Odin or kernel again with the above method since all your are looking for is root access only.

Hi sparkrat,
Sorry for the confusion – yes, I had reverted back to the stock LP4 kernel using ZACQ8's method from post #7. I just forgot to update my signature.
Checkout my post #10 for a summary of the instructions.
Simply put… you have to flash an un-secure kernel to obtain root… then you can use ktool for flash back to your current kernel. That is what I did. And it worked fine and maintained root.
After a while I started getting data drop-outs and a few force closes and random reboots, so I smashed the phone over my knee. Not sure if the issues were due to the rooting/flashing.
Not my finest moment.
Alternatively… Jokesy’s method looks really good – if it works. So thanks for that Jokesy.
Good luck mate, let me know how you go.

Rooting i9100T Vodafone AU

Hello
I've been searching on how to root my Galaxy S2 for a while now, one of the main reasons is to remove the pre-installed Vodafone apps and start up screen.
I was planning to use CF root but am not sure what kernal to use?
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9100TDUKF4
Kernal version: 2.6.35.7-I9100TDUKH1
Build number: Gingerbread.DUKH1
I read that its no longer possible to use SuperOneClick with 2.3.3?
Also someone in a similar situation rooted with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH1-v4.1-CWM4 and had problems with their GPS?
Thanks.

I'm with vodafail and I rooted with the above kernel you mentioned. GPS works perfectly for me.
After you root I would recommend flashing the xxKI3 or KI8 2.3.5 rom. Battery life has improved and screen colours are much better. I use this with hellcat kernel. He has bln implemented.

So what kernel did you end up using to root?...
flash stock xxki4 with odin then root it with cfroot xxki4

1) You are correct in saying that you can root your device by flashing a Chainfire kernel. This process takes 1 minute and will set you up with Superuser/CWM/Root.
2) Kernel does not affect GPS. Modem does. I am on Vodafone (AU) and using I9100TDUKF4. The GPS is perfect. I found with Vodafone if I used KI3/KI4 modem it would not perform very well...

Do NOT do this, it will give you network problems.
Just match the lash 3 digits of your current version (KH1) and download the CF root for that version. That will do the job. No problems with GPS.
Also, unless Vodafone releases a new baseband you should never flash a different baseband on the 9100T. DUKF4 is still the latest.
Ok sweet, thanks for the help.
EDIT: Rooted it just then, yay! What apps do you recommend I install and what to do while rooted?

Thanks. I went to install Metamorph but before that I installed Busybox, I got the message that it may have installed multiple copies? How do I remove Busybox or check if its installed correctly?
Also with setCPU for the screen off profile should I set max to 500 or 800 and use on demand or conservative governor?
How would I remove the Vodafone start up screen/logo?
One last question; the GFG 2011 app that is pre installed by Vodafone, I pressed uninstall using Titanium Backup but the app is still there? It doesnt work though it just the button.

Download Odin3-1.85 at the bottom of the first post. Unzip it.
Disconnect your phone from your computer.
Start ODIN.
Download the correct file.
Unzip it.
Open ODIN and click the PDA button and select the CF-Root folder you just unzipped.
Turn off your phone. Hold down the volume down button, home button and lock button. Press volume up key when prompted.
Connect phone to computer by usb.
Click start on ODIN.
Wait for phone to reboot.
Done.

Busybox is part of CF root.
If you change the screen off profile in setCPU you may notice some weirdness on the lockscreen. Music widget might not work properly and the screen drag unlock may be a little unresponsive. Just experiment and see what works best.
There's a folder in /system/ (could be /system/bootani). Have a look in there maybe you can change the images or delete them and see what happens (make a backup first!)
Using root explorer (or similar) browse to /system/app and delete it. You can also use adb or terminal if you don't have a root file manager app yet.
You can PM if you want, I check it more often than threads.
Hi there.
I've got a Vodafone I9100T which I use in the Telstra network. Incidentally Telstra also sells the I9100T. I have created packages for myself that are the latest CF-Root stock ROM's but use I9100T-compatible modems and generic UK CSC's so there are no bloatware.
Is this something you'd like me to upload so you can flash I9100T's in one go?
I'm thinking of starting an I9100T thread just for this.
i have the same situation with you.i got my i9100T from vodafone au this July.
however the hardest thing for me to root my galaxy s2 is i m using MacBook and can't coonnect the network using Boot camp. i have been find the right methods for my device for such a long time.are there any ideas?????

[Q] New phone. Best approach to root and go to ICS? (version problems?)

tl, dr: brand new SG S2. Want to get CF-Root v5 CWM5, CM9, Siyah kernel 3.
I've been reading a lot of threads here lately, but I'm still confused about some things.
I'm new to android, but not so new to most concepts mentioned as I'm a linux user.
So I have a brand new SG S2 and want to root it and install CM9 (ICS) in it.
But before that, ideally I'd like to backup my phone (rom + efs). But to do that I have to flash CF-root, which itself modifies the stock kernel. So I'll lose my stock kernel.
1) Any work around to this? In linux?
My understanding is that this will get me the yellow triangle. And on CF thread he explains how to get rid of it. But the problem is that I checked the stock kernel thread here and I don't see my firmware there.
(4) Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)

My firmware is PDA: I9100BUKG2 and PHONE: I9100BUKG1.
Do I only need to care about the KG1/KG2 reference? And which one is more important the PDA or PHONE?
So for example would XWKG1 do the trick?
There is also the issue of CF-Root upgrade. For my phone only CF-Root v4.1-CWM4 is available (I have PDA *KG2 and PHONE *KG1).
2) So after I flash CF-Root v4.1-CWM4, get root, backup my phone with CWM and k-tool, can I upgrade to CF-Root v5? Or am I stuck to v4?
Chainfire said:

Other kernels
Replacing CF-Root with other kernels and vice-versa sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't have a list.
When going from CF-Root to another kernel, root will usually stay, while CWM will be lost (unless the other kernel also includes it), but there should not be issues. The CWM Manager app may remain, but probably won't do anything useful.

3) Does this means it's impossible to upgrade to CF-Root v5 or to use the Siyah kernel?
How can I solve this?
Sorry if this post is somewhat confusing, I'm a bit confused myself
Thanks for any help.
Pmed u dude
Mod or Die
1.) There are a few BUKG2 on samfirmware.com. Not sure which one your provider is though. Once you upgrade to ICS (CM9(, you can use the triangle away in the original development thread to remove the yellow triangle and reset counter (works only for ICS) so that is one option for you.
Regarding the kernel, go under settings, about phone and see what it says under kernel (KG1 or KG2).
2) Once you root and get CWM, you can just flash a different kernel with the updated CWM to get v5. You could also just install the siyah kernel from V4 as it comes with its own version of CWM.
3) You will be fine with flashing most kernels from CF-kernel. Most kernel for the i9100 in xda includes CWM or sometimes its own version of CWM.
I used zergrush exploit to root my gf her i9100 with 2.3.5. Used root explorer to grab efs directory.
Then i had root so i could use mobile odin. Now phone is on litening 4.0.3 ics rom probably still with gb bootloader.
No triangle yet
Gonna flash ics bootloader through odin and move to cm9 nightlies tomorrow.
Verstuurd van mijn GT-I9100 met Tapatalk
The zergrush exploit requires
(1) make sure u have installed adb drivers for ur device
Click to collapse
What exactly does this mean?
Do I need to install the SDK? Or do I only need the adb executable file? Or is there any SG S2 specific file that I need to download?
Thanks
EDIT: in linux it only requires setting up a udev rules file
developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html
Also went with the zergrush, and after that kTool to flash CF-root CWM kernel.

[Q] Help! Impossible to Root - SU Binary will not install (ICS / XWLP7)

Hi,
Hoping some of you guys can help me out. I've just taken ownership of an unlocked/unbranded SGSII with the following details :
Model : GT-I9100
Android Version : 4.0.4
Baseband : I900XXLPS
Kernel : [email protected]#3
Build : IML74K.XWLP7
I've flashed CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5 via Odin without any hitches. I see the warning triangle indicating the insecure kernel, busybox, cwm are installed and SuperUser app appears in my app draw. However, it seems the SU binaries just will not install... therefore no root access. Current version shows as vNull and the update option in SuperUser fails as a result.
I've tried flashing the su binary zip via clockwork recovery but it just won't install. Complains of an error with the zip and aborts with status 0! I know some threads recommend to just "keep flashing till it works" for this type of error... but I gave up after about 10 tries... there's something else going on here.
I've even tried the speedmod-kernel-s2-ics-k3-18-Odin kernel ... same problems.
Even 'S2 Root.exe' complains... ROOT ACCESS DENIED!
I've repeated all this a number of times (kernel flash counter up to about 10 now) and even done factory rest, wiped dalvik, reset data etc etc. No luck.
I've read forum after forum and I'm completely out of ideas so hoping for a hand. Even if it's just to say it can't be done for whatever reason.
For now i've just flashed back to stock samsung kernel to get rid of the warning triangle.
Any help appreciated
immedeately after flashing the CF-root, before doing anything you have to open Super SU application once for automatic binary updating...
Flash CF-root LP6 or LP8 from ODIN,
also you have options to flash other Root kernels too like Siyah..

Thanks for the reply. Just tried flashing Siyah v3.2.3 exactly the same results.
SuperUser app refuses to update binary because it can't detect/see the current version and reports it as 'vNull'. Again, no amount of manual flashing of su binary works.

Root is not required for ODIN flash...
Among the latest ICS official versions it is reported that DXLP9 is the stable and bugfree, normally on unbranded phones, region doesnt matter if you are using english language for setup.
you can pick the best one from this thread after reading review posts in the same thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
or
if you only need a rooted Rom and not require to flash any rom further from CWM, you can try any latest from this thread, these are pre-rooted odin flashable ROM with stock recovery not the CWM

[Q] Downgrading from ICS 4.0.3 to Gingerbread 2.3.6

Hi,
I am on stock ICS 4.0.3 , baseband version DDLPA, kernel version XWLP7. I recently rooted my phone following instructions on XDA. Was successful in doing that. Somehow i am not satisfied with the overall experience using ICS 4.0.3 and i would like to go back to stock Gingerbread 2.3.6.
I have searched and gone through a number of posts here and i must say that they are helpful However, there are some questions for which i could not find answers, hence posting this thread.
1) What are the points i need to keep in mind before i downgrade to 2.3.6?
2)Would i be able to get a zip file for stock 2.3.6 which i can flash using CWM? I dont want to use ODIN, though its an option i would consider.
3) I read in one of the post that i would lose root. Would be better is someone confirms once again.
4) I would like to root again once am on 2.3.6 and would like to do it using CWM. Where would i get the required files?
Appreciate your help.
Thanks,

1) do choose the correct firmware(ginger bread) from sammobile.com.
2) u wont get stock GB firmware that can be flashed thro CWM for sure, so the only option for u is to use ODIN.
3) yes once u flash a stock firmware ICS or GB ur going to loose root as the firmware will unroot ur phone automatically.
4)after installing the GB rom u fallow the earlier method u used to root ur phone back and install CWm.
Mobile ODIN
I did it several times... I guess the best way is using the Mobile ODIN, cause you will not loose its root.
But if you haven't the Mobile ODIN, you must use the desktop version (pay attention cause you must apply a stock rom which contains the PIT file and check the re-partion option).
It's easy find on Google.
No need for pit file I believe. Only a PDA file and CSC (optional). Remember to format data and /system from cwm before flashing via Odin.

If you also want to flash a custom rom later, go here and find the correct PhilZ-cwm6 modified stock kernel to flash from stock recovery. Also very easy
That is good advice. It really is stupidly easy, just copy the zip file to your phone's memory (internal or external, doesn't matter), reboot in recovery mode, then install the zip file. That's it, your phone is rooted.
Note that once you're rooted your device is modified so OTA updates probably won't work and Kies may refuse to do firmware updates any longer.
Therefore you might consider invest in a copy of Mobile Odin Pro. That enables you to flash firmware updates straight from your phone, and to retain root during the flashing. Super.
It's easier to flash Siyah v5.0.1 kernel via odin and use triangle away app

Best option.
How can that be easier than downloading a zip file to the phone and flash it in recovery? You don't have to use triangle away that way...
Maybe Siyah kernel is better, and maybe not for a noob...
Siyah kernel is better for a noob because its universal, you don't have to match basebands
Also by the time you have downloaded the right file and put it on your phone, i'd be already rooted with siyah
