USB not recognized, unable to send sms after rooting + CM9 nightly - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
i rooted my sgs2 i9100 with the instructions from galaxys2root.com. I installed cwm through odin and then a cm9 nightly. Soon i noticed that i cannot send sms from cm9 and tried to reset everything back. Now windows no longer detects my phone at all, when i plug it in, i get a message that the device is not recognized, and it has malfunctioned. On linux i was able to see the device in download mode just fine and used heimdall to put in a stock kernel from a zImage. Now i have no warning triangle, but sms and windows usb connection still doesn't work. I've done full factory resets etc, currently i have the rom i backed up before inserting any custom roms, which i got through cwm restore.
What should i do? I've tried almost everything I can find with 2 days of googling and searching forums (different pcs, cleaning, usb debugging mode, pda/modem mode etc).
Edit: Ok SMS sending problem seems to be caused by the operator. I just tried my sim card in a different phone and I get similar errors and I am unable to send SMS. So ignore the SMS part, now the only problem is that I can't connect my phone through usb with windows and use odin etc.

FIXED
Ok bois i finally got this stuff fixed. There's plenty of people with the same issue and lots of different replies. Frequently a tip came up with dialing *#7284# and switching the usb between modem and pda, leaving pda mode on. Well this wasn't quite enough. I did this, but finally got it working when i first put the usb to MODEM mode, then rebooted, then switched back to PDA mode, and voila it's working! So, in conclusion this fixed mine:
1. Dial *#7284#
2. Switch usb mode to MODEM
3. Reboot phone
4. Dial *#7284#
5. Switch usb mode to PDA

Odin won't detect i9100 in download mode after new kernel

Hi,
So I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S II, and I've been trying a few different ROM's found on this site. The last thing I did was actually revert back to a stock Samsung Kernel and firmware. This worked fine, but it unrooted my device, which I knew would happen, but now I'm not able to root it again because when I put the device into download mode, ODIN, or better yet, my computer won't detect the device.
I have all the drivers installed, and I also deleted them all, and Kies, and started from scratch again after searching XDA for similar issues.
I don't believe this to be a driver issue, since I was able to root my device, and swap roms before I went back to the official kernel and firmware. I'm with Bell in Canada, so the versions I went back to were not the official Bell versions, since Samsung has not made them available.
I have a Mac, but I've been using Windows 7 and Odin under VMWare. I can connect my device to either OSX, or Windows 7 when the device is not in download mode, and everything works fine, and Odin detects the device (Not that that does any good of course)
When I connect the device under download mode, the Mac detects the device and asks me if I want to connect it to my Mac, or to Windows (As it should) but no matter which one I select, neither OS acknowledges the device after that point, where as when I'm not in Download mode, both OS's detect the device fine.
After all my troubleshooting with my computer based off of what I found online here, The only conclusion I have left is that there is something missing on the device that allows it to be found under download mode, but that aspect of all this is beyond my current skill level.
Anyone have any ideas?
Are you pressing the Volume Up button to continue in Download mode? Besides, Virtual machine isn't recommended I think.
Yes, Once the Custom ROM warning comes up, I press the Volume up button to continue.
That wasn't even necessary on the Stock Bell ROM. The warning didn't come up at all.
VM has been working fine up until now, so I don't think that's the problem, but I have been thinking of trying this on my old laptop that runs on windows if nothing else pans out.

Have you found anyway to Make Odin recognize to phone in download mode?? Im still struggling with that. my phone is on stock kernel and not rooted yet, ODIN finds it fine when the phone is on and USB Debugging is on, but once I put the phone on download mode it wont recognize it, I dont know why..
Could it be because of the ''SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device'' driver failed to install correctly??
all other drivers are installed correctly.. I have tried to get the driver mentioned above to install correctly but it fails every time, with USB debugging on and off, i have wiped the phone and installed Kies and the drivers several times, Im clueless right.. anyone have any idea please help??
I myself am also suffering from this problem. However, USB seems to function fine while the phone is booted up or in recovery (For ADB). I'm wondering if necessary files may have become corrupted or deleted in reference to USB drivers (phone side mind you) that are used in download mode.
edit: It's also recognized in recovery mode.
Even if it can't be fixed I'd still like to understand why.

was looking for help on this and saw this thread, same problem too..
Connects to Odin and Kies fine when switched on "normally", can use USB mass storage mode Etc.
comes up with a USB device has malfunctioned message on PC when I connect USB cable when switched on and in download mode
EDIT:- just to add, if I try upgrading firmware via Kies it gets to the point where it switches the phone to download mode to upgrade it and has the same issue even with an official upgrade
Figuring download mode is outside the normal boot procedure, I hoped on an off chance that pulling my battery and sim for a few minutes would reset it. It did indeed. Download mode is now functional again, just to be certain I tested it right before pulling the battery to make sure it was still broken. And multiple flashes and reboots afterwards seem to confirm that it has returned to normal.
Anyone else who solves it with this method, please report back.

Galaxy Gio [BELL] does not connect to pc

Samsung Galaxy Gio [Bell] Canada. (locked)
Device: GT-S5660M
Android Version: 2.3.4
Kernel version: [email protected]#1
Baseband: S5660MUGKG3
The device simply wont connect or show up on any PC.
Tried installing KIES (lattest - Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4). Nothing shows up
Tried putting the phone in downloading mode and then in KIES selected emergency firmware update mode and still no device.
Tried using lattest Samsung USB Drivers (1.3.450.0)
Tried putting the phone in downloading mode and connecting it to ODIN which it does not show up in the COM PORT area.
Tried dialing : *#7284# to change the SERVICE MODE to either USB, UART
Including Toggling DBG MSG
Tried different USB ports.
All doing this with USB DEBUGGING ON and tried with it OFF.
There is no USB Setting in About Phone or in Wireless and Networks settings from the settings menu.
There are many other people with this issue I found but all possible solutions that I have been able to find are listed and attempted but to no avail.
Ive read that others are having no problem connecting to their PC seeing as theres modding / custom rom forums all over. So people are able to connect which leads me to think that this is a carrier specific issue.
THIS IS ONLY MY SPECULATION . NOT 100% SURE
I thought I could start this thread on here to get some more solid advice and help.
I managed to unlock my phone. Not that this matters but I still can't connect it to a pc.
Is there a way to flash my phone with the need of a pc?
Would clockworkmod recovery work?
Would there maybe be an .apk that can be used to install the usb pop up screen or to mount the phone and allow it to be shown on the pc?
Does anyone have any ideas..?
turns out it was actually the usb cable.
I was using a micro usb that came with an LG Eve android phone.
I borrowed my friends HTC Desire micro usb cable and to my surprise it worked!
I hope this helps someone else and stumbles on this thread.

[Q] Problem with SIM cards, USB Connection And Fligh Mode

Hi, my Samsung S2, it worked fine till a few days ago, but it has stopped recognizing any sim card (it even tells me to insert the sim card when it is inside), also since it doesnt detect the sim card, is stuck in flight mode.
I wanted to update the firmware to see if this fixed but i cannot do it because the pc wont detect it, (it charges but i dont get even a notification window that the cell was connected), (i tried 3 PCs and 3 Cables).
All other stuff works, i just cant use it as a cell phone or connect it on a pc.
I tried this with no results:
- restore stock settings.
- Master reset, formating data and cache.
- tested with usb debbuging on and off.
The Phone is a GT-I9100 with 2.3.4 (never rooted)
Help Please
I just noticed it says IMEI Unkown now, could this be the cause. if so how can i fix it if i ant conect it to a pc?
EFS corruption most likely!
Search for EFS backup or EFS restore, that will point you out to a number of threads.
Try to flash a stock rom via Odin, you can get into download mode, and open up Odin and see if it recognises your phone?
I just tried that, the pc wont recognize the cell even in download mode is there any way to flash a stock rom without pc?
Do you have the drivers installed on your PC?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
yes i installed Kies, and i dont get even a notification box that a device was connected to the pc. (tried 3 pcs and 3 cables)
Any more ideas? i just tried updating firmware by wifi but it ask for the sim card

[Q] Download mode appears to not work? (Custom ROM)

I'm trying to flash my S3 International (i9300XXUGMK6) to Cyanogen Mod.
The phone currently is running stock jellybean but was rooted some time ago with SuperSU.
First i tried the installer from the CYMod site, all went OK until "Flashing recovery software". The phone went into download mode but eventually the laptop times out saying unable to connect to device. Phone needs rebooting to get control back.
Second time i tried http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_i9300 instead.
Again instructions worked fine until the phone entered download mode. No "ding dong" USB noise from the computer and Heimdall exits with "ERROR:- Failed to detect compatible download mode device"
It seems at least as in download mode my phone wont "talk" to anything.
I've tried 2 different computers (laptop and desktop) and 2 different USB cables.
The phone works as normal in USB mode when not flashing ( to copy photos, view directories etc).
I've tried to redownload a stock firmware but i cant find a single working link now - they all use terraserver which 404s. I'm not even sure i can flash anyway as ODIN wont recognise the phone either with the same drivers off its site.
Any idea how to fix download mode or get it working so i can flash?

Samsung Galaxy S3 MTP and USB Debugging not working/ADB in Recovery also not working

Hello,
I have very odd issue with a S3 I got from my neighbour.
He brought this phone to one of those famous "Phone" Unlock shops here in Vienna,AT.
Well this guys rooted and made something wrong that even Samsung Update said it was very bad modified rom.
So I flashed the first the orignial Open Austria 4.1.2 Version and then 4.3 from December.
1.) I9300XXEMG4_I9300ATOEMG2_I9300XXEMG4 + Factory Reset
2.) I9300XXUGND1_I9300ATOGNC1_I9300XXUGNA8 + Factory Reset after flash
It start normal and when i connect it via usb to my PC it makes sound but MTP is not coming up on the phone neither the USB Debugging even tho I enabled that.
My S3 is not having this issue when I connect it Kies3 and device manager will detect it. Same cable, same usb port same drivers.
I also already tried to set URAT/USB *#7284# and checked also the setting of *#9090# but nothing wrong same as mine.
What else I could check ..I mean when i start it in download mode odin will detect it..if I start recovery mode nothing happens with seem the ADB is broken as well.
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance
