After reading this forum for quite a while, am i the only person who's sitting on the fence when it comes to ROMs?
All the ROMs which i checked out have one problem or another.... either not stable, slower than stock, buggy, or lack in one department or another. I don't really see the point of updating to any ROMs if there are some unresolved issues.
Is there any 2.0 based roms which are not buggy and which have all functions working perfectly? Or should i wait until the official ROM comes out?
copying my thread?

Didn't see your thread... sorry. Seems like we are in the same boat.
that is why i stay with modaco rom xD faster then the original & keep those most function with speed boost.
Seems to be the sae reasonas to why im also trying to dig into customising roms. Though, thus far, any un-official rom i have tested thus far seems to be atleast just as stable as any official rom, except they tend to be alot faster. Might be worth it to try and get some sort of guide started once i know how it all works. One of the issues i didnt manage to find anything on yet is signing a modified rom .zip-archive.
One thing ill definately share when ive completed it will be a very stripped down sense 2.1 rom, and then try to see where i can get from there. Im currently in-between villain rom and the 1.6 beta rom with cooker app, switching back and forth from one another...
Atleast that tought me how to backup and restore things should i keep you all updated if anything changes?
How do you like villain? have you tried kagu? I'm undecided between the two..
i'm using ckdroid ... it's quite fast. very stable and fulfills all of my needs
if you don't really need / want a 2.x rom you should definitly go with modaco for the great tweaks and speed improvements!
also, the first ported roms from cyanogen are being released!
most of present quirks come from drivers not being available for 2.x roms from htc because they haven't realeased them in their own 2.x rom yet. just be a little more patient.
there are already rumors of an official 2.1 htc rom with sense coming out in the beginning of march

As the Villain chef, you'd possibly expect me to promote my own rom. However, I find Kagu to be an outstanding rom. lox has done a great job with it. If I wanted a quick, Vanilla, feature-rich rom, I'd go with Kagu.
I love Sense UI though... hence Villain.
Kagudroid is good, CKDroid is awesome, but they are both Vanilla roms.
I like Villain ROM much better because of Sense UI, even though it's still a bit buggy and is a little slower. totally worth it for me.
You've obviously not been 'round the Dream parts of the forum...
Hi, wasn't sure whether to post this here or in development, so feel free to move it if necessary
I'm currently running Villainrom 12 and love it, but I'm the type of person that Constantly likes to upgrade, and gets bored of things rather quickly.
I've noticed villain have now got a 2.2 ROM out, but my only worry is that it does not include Sense UI. Can someone please point out the main differences between having the Sense UI and not?
and possibly conclude with there opinion on whether i should stick with Sense, or bin it for the new improved 2.2 Rom...?
cheers for any advice.

I believe you've answered your own question
but while I'm always looking for something new, I also want it to be Improved .
Ive flashed many ROM's before (Mainly Villain) and all Include Sense, but just want some advice on whether I should switch.
just some opinions and maybe a comparison of features/usability would help.
Could even start a small debate about the 2 different types of ROM's .
I've tried different Roms since Sept 2009, but I've always found stock ones are the most stable. I'm currently using stock 2.1 found un villain forums with a2sd and root. Very fast and with sense. Vanilla Roms tend to drain the battery very quickly. I'm a very heavy phone user and at work coverage is poor. Try them out, you might disagree with me. Oh, and let's not compare specific Roms, they're too different to one another.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I also get bored with certain ROMs quite quickly and am changing constantly. I started off with Sense and then moved to Vanilla, have been back to Sense and then back again. I'm currently running Vanilla as like the look and feel of it. However I am thinking of going back to Sense, once I can find a good theme as I personally dislike the stock Rosie theme. That's the one thing that puts me off. That said the integration with Facebook and the widgets are a big plus. I know there are other apps and Launchers out there that can do similar things but not quite sure the integration is as good.
Another thing is that Sense UI was designed for the Hero and that means that with a good sense ROM all the hardware works as it should, meaning the LEDs (for notifications). I find these don't work with Vanilla ROMs as yet, although they're getting there.
If you want a change from Villain check out SenseHero. It looks great and is very fast and stable. The guy who created it is currently working on a newer version also.
God, that was long

Everybody looks for different things and holds different features as priorities or essentials for themselves.
I think the best approach is to get yourself all setup to be able to flash/load different ROMs and be able to test them out. The first one you try might be your favorite, or the 5th. Really hard to say.
If you take some time and read through each ROM OP, you'll see what they emphasize for features and how often they update/make changes/improvements.
Also, once you are setup and familiar with the flashing ROM process, it should become quite simple to move between ROMs gaining valuable personal experience.
If you have any questions around the logistics, let us know! Hope that helps! Welcome to the world of a rooted Android!

These are two of the greatest different in ROMs, mainly due to their base. The sense ROMs are all based on HTC's stock sense ROM code and the AOSP ROMs are all based on Google's straight plain AOSP code.
Quick brief description .. to get a full range of ROMs, probably best to try at least one of each to see the difference. Most popular AOSP ROM is usually CM7. I'm not sure what the most popular custom Sense ROM .. dev board should show ..
Sense! i just love the widgets and all that fancy stuff from HTC

I like infected eternity roms. I just flashed the update which is 1.4.2. Great so far, but the last couple releases have been right on for me. Basicly themed stock but has a infected tweak section in settings for change a few things. Also spot hotspot is enabled. I run stock kernal and get greqt speed and battery. Quad scores for me can hit 3000 linpak 75ish. Has been my daily driver for awhile because i cant do with sense.

Viper rom once all the kinks are worked out
I'm currently rooted (with htv dev method) and i'm considering rom'ing it up. I see there are 4 or 5 roms currently being dev'ed for. I hoped i could get some user info on some of the pros and cons of some of the roms you guys have tested. What you like and don't like, issues and things like that. In the past i've used CM, MIUI, Stock sense, and AOKP. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Flash them and test for yourself

I used Fresh ROM back in the Hero days and really liked it (currently using it on my EVO LTE with no problems). So if you like some of the Sense stuff, it's a good ROM to try from an experienced dev.
I'm running Viper with some mods, and couldn't be happier. It's sense and rock solid with great battery. I already have have over 4 hours of screen on time for today, and still have 54% of battery left. All of the roms are great in their own ways, so flex was right, read the threads, flash the ones that look good to you, and see what you like.
yea thast rite.. everyone is diff.. a rom im diggin u mite not like so deff try a few out.. another thing is all phones run diff.. a rom that runs perfect on my phone mite not on yours.. just flash away u will find one u like
Its all the same

only one rom really stands out right now and thats PKMN simply because of the tool it has to customize the look and feel of the ROM. it only has a few bugs, main one is having to manually edit a file to remap menu. the rest of the roms are practically the same. one might be updated faster than the other, but they all have the same "tweaks".
If you want to stay closer to stock, use the "Stock with Goodies" rom. otherwise pick any rom you want ELTE seems more up to date, Viper seems to have more additional mods to flash. Mainly the kernel tweaks
There have been a number of threads started here asking what is the best ROM for the Evo 3d. Those threads are not allowed in the Evo 3D forums and this one is not intended to answer that question. What it is intended to do is help users that are new to custom ROM's on the Evo 3D get some idea of what is available and what might fit their needs based on what they think they want. Then they can try the ROM's that interest them and make a decision about which one suits them best.
If you want feedback on ROM's that might work for you please supply as much of the following information as you can:
1. What model of the Evo 3D do you have (CDMA/GSM, Evo 3D, Evo V, Evo 4G+)
2. What ROM are you currently running?
3. Is your Evo 3D rooted and/or S-OFF?
4. What is important to you in a ROM (features, customization, performance, battery life, etc.)
5. Do you plan to run a custom kernel to OC/UV or for additional features like USB host?
6. If you have a preference between Sense and AOSP ROM's please include that.
7. Indicate if you are looking specifically for a GingerBread, Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean based ROM.
8. Must have features that don't work on all ROM's like Wi-Fi tethering, WiMax 4G, and 3D camera.
For people giving information and advice in this thread, please refrain from stating what you think is "the best" ROM since it is up to each user to decide that for themselves. And most importantly, please don't get excited if someone else doesn't appreciate your favorite ROM since we want things to be civil so we can keep this thread open.
Thanks to the mods for being willing to give this a try.

My wife got a used e3d [cdma] a few weeks ago and is experiencing wierd things, the touch screen is non-responsive, it freezes, the proximity sensor goes crazy, etc...
What is a decent rom, where most everything works fine? I don't care about 3d, but wimax and regular camera are necessary. I was just going to do the htc unlock as I don't really care about s-on or off for her phone.
EDIT: I would prefer a cm9 or cm10, but it looks like cm10 hasn't been updated in almost 2 months, and i can't even find a cm9 thread... you're dev forum is packed to the brim, lol.

I'm transferring this information from the Q&A forum for sparticuz so he can get some feedback here.
I'll start by saying that if the phone is having touchscreen problems you might want to flash the RUU for the Sprint ICS stock ROM to make sure it's not hardware.
You will have to relock it before running the RUU, then HTC unlock it again and flash a custom recovery, and then you will be able to flash custom ROM's of your choice.
Given your preference I would suggest you try the JB custom ROM's that are in active development, which includes a variety of CM10, MIUI and AOKP ROM's in the Development Forum. Most of them have working cameras at his point (though not 3D). None have WiMax 4G yet but it's being worked on.
You might also want to try some of the Sense based ROM's like SOS M that are mostly "de-Sensed" to remove the bloat but have everything working and still offer the look and feel of AOSP based ROM's.
ramjet73
It's running stock right now. I was thinking about doing a reset to factory, but I also wanted to address the finicky proximity sensor and the freezing at the same time. I was hoping for something that is stable at this point, I won't be 'flashing the latest nightlies' on it or anything. What would be the best fit for me for a stable ics rom, i don't care if it's sense or not, where 4g and camera work, (again, i don't care about 3d).

Is it for you or your wife?
Because honestly if it's for your wife you may just be better suited to stick with a sense rom. There are a few ics ones that run smoothly with no issues and even some that are made to look more stock Android like.
I only say that because, unless she is hard core like most people on here she may not truly want bleeding edge, just wants it to always work. Although I consider cm10 stable for myself and have been using it as a daily, it would be far too unstable for my wife. Does that make sense? I have been through situations like this with my wife while she was on Android, I finally gave in and bought her an iphone.
Running MeanROM ICS at the moment. I Have the Sprint Evo 3D. I care about 3D (display and camera), Wimax 4G, tethering, HDMI out, speed, and stability. I have s off. I don't care about Sense because I run my own launchers and widgets. I also use Link2SD because the phone doesn't have enough internal storage.
Any ROM suggestions?

Some ROM's that come to mind given your requirements are SOS M, which you may have tried already, the d3rpICS Bareback version, and the Senseless AOSP version of SolidROM.

I agree about SOS M as it is basically just MeanROM without Sense. I also think that Common Sense AOSP and Desensification (both by beneath a burning turtle) are worthy contenders to add to ramjet's list. Both have most of the sense stuff removed as well.
Good thread Ramjet73. Since I don't dig around and actually try different roms (I read about them when I can), I will post here for some feedback.
Currently:
1. Evo 3D CDMA (Sprint)
2. MeanRom ICS v2.6
3. Rooted / S-OFF / 2.89fw & Hboot 1.58
4. My ROM Priority Order: features, performance, battery life
5. Running Athx 3.6.6a-MR, for OC/UV at 1.62Ghz, Sweep2Wake, & USB OTG (OTG is so cool!)
6. The only thing from sense 3.6 I have kept/like is the Weather Lockscreen with its App Shortcuts and Caller ID. (ADW Launcher Ex)
Looking for:
7. I am interested in a solid Jelly Bean/CM based ROM if it's available.
8. My must have features beyond the basics that I like from MeanRom (4g and 3d Camera not req'd)
- Full Data Roaming
- WiFi Tether support (Need for tethering the HP Touchpad with CM9)
- Exchange ActiveSync "Sync While Roaming" can now be enabled including push (update schedule) while roaming
- HTML message format unlocked in Exchange Mail settings
- Roam Only option in mobile network settings
- init.d support
- LeeTweaks (or similar non controversial version/features)
- MHL (TV out) support (may give this one up temporarily)
I keep expecting to see something that makes me want to trade the features/performance/dependability I get on MR 2.6, but haven't gotten the impression that JB development for the 3D has hit that milestone yet. Please redirect me if I missed something.
Thanks

Wow, that's a tough one.
To be honest, I still haven't found anything better than MeanROM ICS, especially when you consider the roaming and Outlook features, along with the other fixes that Mike (mikeyxda) made to the Sprint ICS base. JB ROM's are still solving camera, WiMax and MMS issues, and I don't think they have even started to address features like roaming control and Outlook customizations. Agrabren's Disarmed Toaster CM10 ROM is probably the farthest along on the Evo 3D, and an update is expected soon that should narrow the gap between AOSP and Sense ROM's for our phone.
Cool ICS and Common Sense both offer some things that aren't integrated into MeanROM ICS (Google Now and other Jelly Bean features, custom kernel, enhanced YouTube) but as you already know those features can be added to MeanROM ICS with a little extra work. The d3rpICS ROM (Sense and de-Sensed) is another option to consider, and one of the few with ongoing updates available via SVN, but I haven't checked its features recently.
As far as AOSP based ROM's go, there are a bunch of new ones recently released, but development is mainly focused on camera, MMS, WiMax and other basic functionality, with hardly any discussion of roaming and Outlook features.
I still use MeanROM ICS as the daily driver on my primary phone, so I'm not really the best one to answer your question about alternatives, especially AOSP based options. That's why we started this thread so hopefully someone who does use an AOSP based ROM as their primary will jump in.
BTW, my favorite JB based ROM so far is lens_flare's MIUI, mostly because I've always enjoyed the feature integration and themes that MIUI offers, but that in no way addresses your priorities.
Thanks for the inquiry. Hopefully it will get this thread moving again.

ramjet, i need your help
1. What model of the Evo 3D do you have : CDMA
2. What ROM are you currently running? : Viper3D_02Nov12_1459_r218_s
3. Is your Evo 3D rooted and/or S-OFF? YES
My Phone cannot gain root access
can you solved my problem? thanks!
Hello,
1. What model of the Evo 3D do you have (CDMA/GSM, Evo 3D, Evo V, Evo 4G+)
CDMA, Sprint Evo 3D
2. What ROM are you currently running?
SOS M
3. Is your Evo 3D rooted and/or S-OFF?
Rooted, yes.
HBOOT 1.5 S-ON
4. What is important to you in a ROM (features, customization, performance, battery life, etc.)
Stability, battery life
5. Do you plan to run a custom kernel to OC/UV or for additional features like USB host?
No
6. If you have a preference between Sense and AOSP ROM's please include that.
AOSP. Since I use Go Launcher anyways, I'd prefer not having the bulk of Sense
7. Indicate if you are looking specifically for a GingerBread, Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean based ROM.
ICS or later
8. Must have features that don't work on all ROM's like Wi-Fi tethering, WiMax 4G, and 3D camera.
4G and wifi tethering are required
3D camera (while I rarely use it) isn't something I'm ready to give up. So I'd prefer it to work.
My main concern is I haven't updated my firmware ever (because I'm S-ON). So I'd like to use ROMs similar to SOS M, that use a kernel compatible with my firmware, hboot, etc.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Thanks for posting here. I was thinking of this ROM by Gruesomewolf. It is sense 3.6 so everything works, but also has a desensification option in its installer.
