Everyone - HTC EVO 3D

Hello, everyone
What is it that you expect from a kernel developer? Also, do any of you run gingerbread as of the moment? I only ask because I am trying to take on the task of being a new contributor to this site. I want to contribute by giving you folks kernels. I'm nowhere near done. I am learning, but I feel like I should ask this now. To reiterate, I'm a noob trying to learn, and I’m curious as to what you guys want/see.
i simply want to know what you folks see in a kernel developer, and what you expect from one. While I am typing this, I am fairly nervous of the future responses. I already understand that I violated the rules of XDA by posting this question in general. I am willing to suffer the consequences for my actions as well.
I am simply curious at what you guys think.

Wow, I think its great what you're doing. Thanks.
I'm still running GB because everything works. I guess that's what I'd want in a kernel. A kernel that will run ICS where everything works including all 3D.
Your avatar is cool.

I think it's awesome that you're stepping up to the plate, I think you should make one to your liking 1st & then branch out from there.
If I could muster up the free time to study, I'd like to do the same.

Just be careful if you make something truly amazing.....
Just saying...

I'd say make stuff for you and not what other people want. If YOU want a specific feature put it in there.
The problem with making it with what other people want, is their is essentially less motivation to do it, the works harder, and you get regular users complaining about your work because it's not how "they" want it.
Enjoy your learning man!

What chad did was this: he made a kernel the way HE wanted it. He shared it with a few others, who about 1 month later pushed him to post on xda.
Bottom line: make it the way YOU want it

I think most people are concerned with battery life and performance. But...like everyone said, make it how you want it. What do you want most out of your phone?

So far only two kernel's have impressed me the most.....RCMix kernels (from the desire HD days) and anthrax kernel on the 3D, nothing else has even come close to those two in my opinion.
That's what -I- expect from a kernel.....
what you give will benefit the community surely, so don't let individuals dictate development.....the developers should do that, because at the end of the day....after the dust settles and all is done, it will be the same as what we all want (apart from things like usb host), so welcome and if anybody gives you a hard time, just stick the treasured two finger salute

since you asked... stability. no bs that makes your phone a million times faster or adds couple megapixels to your cam while at the same time adding features that don't even work on most roms.
personally just a kernel that focuses on battery that will be awesome.

I would agree with the consensus: make something that:
1) is reliable
2) has great battery life
3) has good performance
The order is important.

Definitely this.
Sadly most of xda do not have the same opinions for what makes a great kernel.

hahahaha my psychic powers right there =P, now you're already my fav kernel dev on xda before you do anything =P
they were brilliant on RCmix ROMs and ARHD ROMs

IMO
You won't make everyone happy as the little bugs that make something work for one phone, but, borked for another.
Secondly, I prefer ICS over GB. Just preference.
However, you asked, and this is what I like:
1) Stability
2) Performance in the area of smooth graphics (choppiness sucks)
3) Battery tweaks
4) Something for GSM and CDMA users.
In that order. I don't overclock simply because it's not really needed. I run a stock speed and have smoother graphics with the LeeDroid tweaks on Booster Shot ICS than I did with LeeDroid tweaks on any overclocked GB ROM I ran. Why go 100 mph when going 70 gets you to the same destination and in roughly the same amount of time and using less gas?

I would like to tell you something like this:
1. All things working
2. Great battery life
3. Smooth and fast
4. Compatible with both gsm and cdma..
Does it look like too much request?

Issue with video recording on XRon
i've been running Xron RC1 for about a week and was stunned to find that everything was working perfectly! Sure enough last night i attempted to record a video of my kids with the standard htc video recording app and I get FC's every time I try and start recording.
I can however use qik and it seems to record and store it well.
thoughts? / suggestions.
Evo 3d
Rooted, rom'd, themed.
I think all the ROMs are about the same speed wise. The question is do you want it to look stock or do you want something thats been themed? Some are heavily themed you wouldn't even know it was the 3D. Others are just a few modifications to better the look. Also the other question is what apps do you want some ROMs are completely striped of everything others are untouched and yet others have just the apps the DEV feels are necessary.
So those are the things you really need to look at and some can only be addressed by actually flashing the ROM and using it. Example flash a ROM and everything is great then you realize that the "Recent Apps" is gone from the Notification Pulldown that maybe a deal breaker for you.
Flash them all take notes see what YOU like and what gets the job done. At the end of the day only you can make the final call.
Ignore the trolls.. last I checked this is the Q&A section guess questions aren't allowed either. Its one of "those guys" they made a mod and some people have left because of it.
Of course I like my ROM the best

Exactly. You will find so many people that like Variable 'X' ROM, and other's that love Variable 'Y' ROM.
There are so many great ROMs out there. It's up to you when it comes to your favorite. Just try keep trying different ones until you find one that you love.

AOSP PB9 from Deck. All working except Camera, 4G nad 3D. HW is about 90%, Wifi, 3G, BT, all is working very good. OC up to 1.94 ghz. Good ROM to try
Sense: inbREDed ROM is smooth and fast, MeanROM is another one. Both have all stuff working without problems. MeanROM is more stock look while inbREDed is a fully themed ROM, ledroid tweaks, 2 MPx in front forced. Also, OP is working on 1080p recording

The two ROMs I use:
Mean ROM: everything works. Uses the Ziggy kernel which is stable with great battery life. Very active dev (new release every few days) and very active user community. Has Beats working without the headphone hiss. This ROM looks mainly stock with some addons included or flashable.
Nocturnal Adrenaline: everything works. Uses the Anthrax kernel which is slightly worse on battery, but a little better in performance. Active dev (new releases about once every week or two) and active community of users. Less stock look since Leedroid tweaks are built in and some of the widgets and apps are inverted.
I flashed version a 2.2 ZR3D rom and it is great. Really sped my phone up!

X2. I am not new to rooting, but just recently finally rooted my Evo3D. Tried several different ROMs. I found that Mean ROM was very stable, very quick and snappy, everything works, and very active dev, as stated before. Many that use Mean are changing to the Anthrax kernel to go even faster, but the Ziggy kernel that comes stock on the ROM works great, and is a huge improvement over stock.
I AM looking forward to an ICS ROM that has everything working. Every time I try a ROM with something as a know issue not working, I think it will be no big deal to do without. Then I find that is the feature I miss the most. So I choose to stay with fully functional ROMs. Just my opinion...

I installed MeanROM 0.3 last night before going to bed. Today I went from full to 60% faster than I expected this morning, but since then it has gone from 60 to 30% much more slowly. I am definitely going to give it a little time to "settle in" and see how it goes. Plus, given Mikey's history, it'll be on 0.5 or 0.6 by the end of the week Which is why you can't say one is "better" than the other right now - both are still evolving pretty rapidly.
But, maybe I'll give Flex360's a try right now as a point of comparison.
I've run pretty much all of the roms available and am on mean rom since last night..it seems to be running well..I ran omjs for a while and that was nice and smooth ..imho I dont notice much difference between them but maybe that's just bc I dont know what I'm looking for? One thing I dont like is the show JavaScript console bar and do.t understand its usefulness...and it blocks out my status bar even at the top ..

Precisely. Anyone claiming one ROM is the "best" ROM at this point is just biased. They all are based on the exact same software--except for AOSP--and do virtually the same things and have the same tweaks. There isn't enough diversity at this point to crown one ROM "the best."
i think right now i think that pkmn rom is ahead by a little bit only because it has a leetroid like app that allows you to customise the look and feel of the app. lots of things you would normally edit something for is just a checkbox away

Why root?

Now I came from htc EVO category and rooting was the norm.. The biggest reason was because the froyo rom looked terrible.. other Roms sped up the EVO and increased batt life.. On this phone however the ics is amazing the batt life is great and the speed is fine... So why tweek and accidently break something while rooting?? I've looked through the dev roms and they all seem the same..

If rooting isn't for you and you're just gonna talking about the risks then why are you here? You already know what comes with root and the things you can do..if you're happy without it then that's great. it isn't necessary to bang on anyone who chooses to root for whatever reason they choose.
Most people who root aren't gonna run into issues with "system updates".
I root because I like to have control of what apps are on my phone, whats running and what isn't. What's jacking my data and killing my battery. I like using adfree to block some of the more annoying ads .. I like the tweaks, I like the option of de-bloating, I like (if we get it) AOSP options like CM9 and MIUI, I like the ability to theme and change status bar icons/notification pulldown etc etc. I root more for the customization than the performance boost, because honestly, there isn't much but it is there.
Later in the life of the phone, I really enjoy the ports from newer phones and newer software..gives me a taste of what another phone might be like and if it's worth my time. The funny thing is, the Sense4 port on the evo3D ran better than this phone at first..but it has settled down and cleaned up since, with the help of root.

Most the bloatware on this phone isn't that problematic.. it doesn't chew up CPU usage or batt life from the graphs I monitor?? Why am I here? To stay up to date with any new things for this phone, to check out the new accesseries for the phone.. Matter of fact I found the cruzerlite case thanks to these forums! Many things to do on these forums than just find root links...

The risk is worth the reward. Free wireless tether is the only reason i needed to root.

Indeed. This and titanium backup is enough for me. Although I like being in complete control of my computers so I'm sure that adds to it.

Would you reroot if you bricked your phone? I just don't know the devs good enough to trust there roms are brick free.. I haven't seen any devs from EVO yet to work on this one

The #1 thing that leads to bricks here its not reading the OP as long as you do that your fine, All of the devs that are here were the best devs for their previous device so why not trust them?? And I've seen a couple of EVO devs here too Team D.I.R.T baby!

Phones don't brick because of devs. They brick because of stupid users.
These devs are class acts. Trust them.

Flipz was on the evo. Did you know the Evo devs before you flashed their roms? This is my 4th android phone, all rooted. I wouldn't hesitate a bit to root again even if I somehow bricked my phone. I know the risks, you have to do something pretty silly to hard brick your phone.
This isn't some unknown bootleg pirate website, XDA is legit as it gets and most devs are recognized in one way or another.

You know that these phones have auto correct right? I'd make more use of it seeing as how accesseries isn't a word. Anyway I found that ad away is more than a good reason to root.

I came from the 3D, and before that, the original Evo 4G. I rooted my 4G a few months after getting it, when I discovered the development community. I then proceeded to install just about every ROM that got released, regardless of what it was. I ran that poor phone into the ground with the amount of flashing I did.
I then moved on to the 3D, which I rooted just as soon as it was charged enough. I got lucky and got an hboot 1.4 version (I bought the phone right after this last Christmas). By the end of that day I was running on Warm 2.3. The following weeks found me trying out tons of different ICS ROMs, and whatever was available. I stuck with that phone until this phone released.
When I first got the phone, I wasn't sure whether or not I wanted to root it. I knew that there were some benefits to rooting and installing a custom ROM but I just didn't feel that it was worth it anymore. I used to flash a ROM (or two) a day, but now I don't even feel like rooting my phone. Why not?
I got tired of the hassle involved. It's great fun to try different ROMs, but it's so much to keep track of that it makes using the phone almost like a chore. Having to check for tiny updates every day in order to get the best experience is cool at first, but after a while the effect started to wear off on me. At this point I don't really see the merit in installing a custom ROM that will give me a couple of extra features. Sure, quick settings is cool. But I haven't had a single performance issue, the multitasking doesn't bother me, and the battery life is stellar. My benchmark scores are just about the same as other ROMs, and I'm sure my battery life is as well.
Rooting isn't for everybody. It certainly is something that I enjoy, and I am sure that I will eventually root this phone. But I've found in this past month or so that I can enjoy my phone just fine without changing every little bit about it. This phone is a great device, that I believe doesn't require rooting to enjoy. I personally feel that the only potential that can be brought out is in regards to Jellybean, since it is a step above ICS and we don't have it yet.
All of that being said, once we have a somewhat stable JB build, I will root and install that, because I want to try it. But OP, don't feel bad if you don't want to root. It isn't something you HAVE to do in order to enjoy your phone. Don't let other people tell you that you're stupid for not rooting it. Sure, it's a nice thing to be able to do, and I love it, but if you can't find a reason to root on your own, I would suggest that you don't do it. I know I won't until I can find that reason (JB).

Whenever I see terribly butchered posts sent from phones, I chuckle. These phones have auto correct, and their posts still look like that. Imagine if they were posting from an actual computer that didn't fix their mistakes. O_O

I didn't know I was In English class all over again but thanks for the heads up.. This topic was a mere curiosity to why you root. I know myn, virus, a lot of great kernal devs and ive yet to see them migrate to this particular phone yet. I rooted my EVO for performance issues. I don't see any issues with this phone. Now if your broke and want to illegally WiFi tether more power to ya.. Class dismissed.

nothing to do with being broke,i make plenty of money. Its the damn principal.

What's the most stable Rom with everything working?

I dont really need sense 4 or best battery life I'm always next to my charger so that's fine I with or without sense is ok not really needed but stable download speeds is a must cuz I do some hardcore torrent downloads thanks and performance is a must to cuz I'm a hardcore gamer so basically I'd like a Rom for gaming and downloads I know the terms about you can't really say what's the best Rom cuz everyone is diff but I just need to know of some that are good for gaming vipersense is out no offense I love the the Rom but shadowgun kept freezing my phone and adownloader wouldn't download anything I left a download on all night it only downloaded 30 mb out of 7 gb this would probably give you an idea of what kind of Rom I'm looking for thanks

Umm from what you are describing as your needs you should just stick to stock experience because you will always run into small random bugs in virtually every custom ROM that most people who are experienced in flashing can easily fix or make workarounds or do relevant searches regarding their problems. Since battery life isn't an issue and complete stability is what you desire stick with stock/rooted debloated ROM or just flash faux kernel on top of stock ROM and over clock it using system tuner pro (for intense gaming if you feel the device is underperforming). Good luck

Since everyone is going to give you a different answer that won't be correct for your phone, we generally close these type of best/fastest/mostest threads whenever we see them. Like now. As stated above, try them all until you find the one you like.
Also, you might benefit from taking some time to read some of the stickied guides. I see you are new here and I understand the excitement and rush to post and ask everything at once, however, I believe that many of your questions have been asked and answered before so a little reading time might be the fastest way to pick it up.
Thank you,
