I just had two SGS2's side by side to compare. A completely stock one (GB) against my rooted SGS2 with HyDrOG3NiCs rom and latest siyah kernel (Force GPU 2D rendering + Overclocked GPU profile) and the stock one was just smoother and snappier while scrolling between homescreens and through the application menu. I have some apps installed (1 time widget +2email widgets + 4 shortcuts on the homescreen + 8 shortcuts on another homescreen). While the other one is completely stock (and seems to have just as many apps in the application menu as me)
I've tried several ICS ROMs so far and they all seemed the same (speed wise). Does everyone experience this? Wasnt ICS supposed to make android f aster?

ICS was slower in the beginning but I can say that now it is smoother than GB! The only thing that is better on GB is battery life
ICS = lags - slower than iphone 4
Stock GB = smoother than iphone 4
I tried many different ROMs like wanamlite/spike pure ICS/resurrection remix/MIUI/and now on hydrogenics... not one of them was as fast as GB...

AOSP based roms have sticky scrolling and GB roms have free flow scrolling
That might be the reason you find one slow and one faster
But honestly ics is not yet fully optimized as android 2.1 was slow but 2.2 and 2.3 brought HUGE difference

id suggest you change your ics rom
ics used to be laggy, it isnt anymore and the samsung roms have the same scrolling as GB did.
Yes I agree, I have stock ICS now and before a few days I saw my aunts SG2 she doesnt update it usually so she has GB and I realised its much much smoother , but I think with time it will get better.

So i have to flash only stock samsung ROMs to get the smooth experience? Isn't flashing a pure ICS rom supposed to be even lighter (hence faster?)?
And if you suggest I do so, change my rom to what?
I've been using Android since 1.5 on the g1 have since used many different handsets and versions of Android. for me, scrolling had never been as smooth and responsive as it is now on my gs2. I'm using aokp foxhound and it's definitely better than any gingerbread ROM I've used on it. It's especially better than my step moms brand new stock gs2. Sorry to disagree.

Correct, Samsung-based is way smoother than AKxP-based Roms.

well i never said only to flash stock samsung roms, i said roms based from samsung are smooth. Personally ive found vk rom and neat rom to be very smooth and fast but each rom im trying on XWLPD, XWLPF and XWLPG seem to be pretty smooth to me. Im not gonna get into a whats the best rom discussion though, just need to read through and try some.

If the scrolling smoothness of GB is what you're after may I suggest the excellent Fluxxi kernel found under Original Development. You can change the scrolling behavior to mimic that of GB. Read the faqs, flash it on top of your aosp rom of choice, and off you go

neatrom with vertumus ics theme, apex launcher and siyah kernal is perfect for me
you need to remember the system requirements for ICS, its a lot more powerful, ive got an htc one x quadcore and that runs ics sooooo smoooooth.
Yes, gb is smoother, but gb is also less demanding and buggy, i do still prefer gb, but to balance it out, ICS is now at a point where its an acceptable daily driver with very little in the way of issues, its pretty smooth, its nice to look at and it works a lot better than gb on the internet tethering side which i use a lot, so, Ics would deff come first for me.
Forget ics, the big question is what will jellybean bring to the table, and will the s2 run it comfortably or not, i know were not far of seeing JB roll out to the first devices, i suspect the likes of the Note and the S2 and the S3 will be on the list for an update, from what ive read its due sometime end of the year.

Hi,
I have got an solution for Slow menu scrolling.
Just edit your build.prop file and change following value...
ro.max.fling_velocity=4000
Change 4000 to 8000 and see the scrolling.
Enjoy

Hey.
Typing on CM7 is so smooth and fast, compared to stock.....
I mean that there is no lag or sometime the keyboard stutters while typing fast for me on checkrom or stock rom.
I am using gingerbread keyboard, I have tried both the market and the one that comes in the kitchen app, and both of them are not as smooth and fast as the CM7 keyboard.
Someone know why that is?
lag isn not only in KB.. it lags like hell while trying one contacts and message app..
samsung stock roms are crap
I use roms based on stock releases and never suffer lag. Try different roms or kernels.

I'd say the opposite. CM7 is crap and laggy compared to stock roms. Though I always use custom roms based on samsung firmware.
CM7 can't match the speed of it.
I can't say about the keyboard, maybe it's faster on CM7.
for me custom roms are slower than stock samsung roms
the smoothest stock rom ive used is the KJ2 rom
cm7 is also pretty amazing almost fast as KJ2
currently using cm9
nothing is faster
Im currently using CM9 latest nightly, but as much as I love AOSP, I never feels as smooth as samsung based roms. Why is that? Kernel? Drivers? Optimizations?
If its kernel, which is (Opinion based) the smoothest available?
thnx
Im looking for the smoothest experience, is there a kernel or any t

ATM cm9 roms have a bit touch issue, so it feels like its not smooth
But when their wasn't any touch issue then people said its much smoother than stock
once you taste aosp ics you never go back
just wait till it hit stable and samsung rom wont even come close
^^^ Thats how I feel. But im kinda picky, thats why I brought it up. I noticed the touch issue and its part of the issue IMO. But can Exynos drivers/optimizations also be contributing? because stock ICS roms get much better framerate in the GPU tests than CM9 (never mind the overall score) So maybe the CPU isnt being used to its full potential
I flashed a buddys Vibrant with Passion ICS and also noticed that a single core 512mb ram last gen phone felt smoother than my exynos monster. Same goes to the Vivid when i tried one at the ATT store that had the ICS update. When i flipped the homescreen carrusell in Sense, it was like when I first saw a motionflow 120hz TV
Hope things get sorted out because I love AOSP and would never want to go back to the cartoony TW

Hey guys, I've seen that lots of people have been having confusion between the ICS roms and whatnot.
1. TMOUS ICS LEAK
Stock Sense 3.6 with Ics 4.0.3
2. Android Revolution HD 2.x.x
Same as TMO Leak only with improved performance and battery. There are NO visual changes whatsoever in what I've seen. Completely stock look.
3. Energy ROM build April 27 and forward
Based on TMO Leak. April 27 build is much like Android Rev HD, only with some tweaks put in by NRG. New build that is on the way is themed and has more tweaks. If you haven't used the Energy ROM before, expect a heavily themed ROM just like the earlier GB builds of the ROM.
4. Speed Run 2.x.x
Currently in beta testing. A senseless ROM, with ICS lockscreen and Stock ICS look. If I'm not mistaken, Sense launcher/Rosie is removed and replaced by another launcher, more specifically, Trebuchet or Nova for example, which are built on the Stock ics launcher with more features.
5. RevolutionizedNonSense
Based on ARHD 2.1.0. Similar to Speed Run, with much of Sense removed. Rosie replaced by Apex.
Hope some people can make good use of it

Can someone please post AnTuTu scores of the different versions. I am probably going to flash one of these (Energy probably as I am used to his GB ROM) soon as I am tired of all the TMobile crap, and I need the quick settings that NRG has in his version.
I am currently on stock ICS, rooted with ext4 installed. AnTuTu has given me scores around 6500 (last run was 6558) and I have seen someone on AndroidRev has a score of 6666. If any of these ROMs are significantly faster, I will go with that option. Anyone on Energy, please? I cannot post in the Android Dev section because I have never posted much here. But I am absolutely loving ICS so far, and might even try and get into development since I have a little bit of coding skills.

I hope u don't base which rom to flash by antutu benchmarks. Honestly, it doesn't take but 10 min to do a backup and flash a rom. I always download each rom and make a backup so I can just switch between backups. It's always best to try a variety and see what u like best.

Not to whore out my rom but.. well wait, I kinda am.
You can add RevolutionizedNonsense to the list- it is based on Android Revolution HD(which has a ton of tweaks you should note on the OP) but has all of the sense removed, and uses aosp(Lockscreen,Browser, mms, gallery, email, calendar, etc) a lot like the speed run does(I just chose a better name )
But so far it has been super smooth, everything works.. and because it was built on top of mike1986's Android Revolution it is snappy as hell, and so far really good on battery life.
Really, I couldn't ask for a better rom unless I made it myself.. which I did.

I've just been trying out GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100XEULP5.tar from Infratech's stock ROM thread for the last day or so and have found it slow. Often I'll touch the screen and nothing will register or it will take a full second or so to respond. Starting apps can sometimes take up to two seconds before it seems to register. Scrolling long lists in various apps can sometimes show a small amount of lag on Gingerbread, but on this ROM it's horrific.
This can't be right can it? Is anyone else finding this? If this is progress in the name of ICS, I'll stick with GB.

I've been on cm9 for the last few months, and I have just dual-booted lp9 Samsung ICS rom yesterday, and I just couldn't believe how slow and laggy everything was in Samsung ICS rom compered to cm9 and Samsung gingerbread rom. The browser was horrendously laggy compared to Samsung gingerbread roms and the same issues as described by the OP. Also, the scrolling mechanism was just screwed up beyond belief. I really like the idea of switching between cm9 and Samsung roms when I feel like change, but at the moment I find all ICS Samsung roms, just unusable after using cm9. I hope Samsung fixes this mess in their next major update.
ICS 4.0.3 is not 100%
ICS 4.0.3 is not 100% perfect couple of issue are there.
Waiting for Samsung to Release 4.0.4 which will address many issues that are present in 4.0.3.
cm9 to me is draging ics behind it, when ics is improved cm9 will be mint ,im still on Gb but will flash when it gets up to 4.1.0 etc, i dont want these bugs in my daily life.
I'm using LP7, tweaked some cosmetic stuff, and I find it very fast and responsive. A friend recently changed from GB 2.3.6 to ICS 4.0.3 official via Kies and said (his words, not mine): its a whole new smartphone.

ICS is smooth for me, very smooth. Don't use AOKP roms since lgcamera doesn't work well with them yet. Battery life is worse than sammy based roms as well, plus no dialer codes work. The only LAG I've gotten is with Quickpic. Don't know what the difference is between Quickpic on GB and this one on ICS but swiping across photos lags like hell and yet the stock gallery is now smooth like cream
For me, ICS is smooth as a baby's bottom, as long I stay on stock kernel. Once I flash a custom kernel, smoothness goes south. For this reason, although I like the fast charging feature in Siyah, I have to stay on stock.
dialer codes are working for me

yes, it is laggy. little better using Siyah.

I found a ROM that was receiving a lot of praise, called AndyX. It's using Siyah kernel if I remember right. I tried it and it was actually very good, nice and smooth, no complaints. It also has the ICS look I was expecting to see which was quite nice. You mention lgcamera not working on AOKP ROMs - I'd never heard of AOKP but have just done a quick google and may see what's kicking around for the S2. I know this is the wrong thread, but it's thanks to you I can now record video in 720p without in looking like a slideshow (lgcamera tips in another thread)
So, in summary, my initial choice entering the world of ICS just turned out to be a dud and there's hope yet.
EDIT: I may well go back to AndyX for a bit.. I had to restore to my normal GB ROM because I changed governor in AndyX and now the phone freezes before I can unlock it

AOKP is based off CM9 with other mods flung in (Look at Resurrection Remix or Hydrogenics) and they both run smooth. However I NEED lgcamera unless I get horrible FPS in the camera (looks like you know what I'm talking about lol). Just so you know, 1080p does work as well without lag just in case you didn't notice. I do prefer 720p though. No automatic zoom in like 1080p. I used to be on AndyX rom, quite some time ago actually
I came from Gingerbread KL1 & updated to LPG, gotta say even though I had the phone for 4 days (on GB) the lag is very much noticeable on ICS! The phone was just blazing quick everywhere but it just *feels* different now...

I have been looking at my girlfriends brand new S3 with stock firmware and i have noticed that ICS is actually smoother than every JB leak i have installed and also smoother than my Omega 26 Rom. My Omega 26 Rom has all of the bloat removed and it doesnt make any difference.
In fact i would go as far to say that hers is smoother than mine!
Im starting to think that all this Rooting and Flashing causes more problems than it might solve!
Smoothness doesn't necessarily mean speed though
Eg. Reset transition speeds to 1 if you have them on 0.5 is a good way of demonstrating what I mean

I kinda get what youre saying. I have 3 devices on which I have the new cm10, dli8 and lh1. LH1 wins in all categories except for jellybean smootness of the dli8 leak. ICS is still king.
remember, these are still leaks, may still be bugs...
No. The jellybean is smoother. And cm10 is waaaay faster
People just have different ideas of smoothness. Some people think the Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean is smoother than the GS3 with ICS, not a chance, Some stupid people even think that the Iphone 3Gs is smoother than the GS3, which is just plain retarded. Some people think that the iphone 4 and 4s kill even the high end Androids in smoothness, wrong again. Some people think that sense 4.0 isn't a stuttery mess and that the One X is actually close in performance to the GS3, you guessed it, wrong.
Just go with your eyes.
If i were to hazard a guess. AOSP probably has about 30 frames of animation that just cycle every half a second, locked at 60fps. While touchwiz has like 40 frames of animation or more that is usually locked 60fps but not always like JB. So yeah, during the times that ICS touchwiz is at 60 fps, it should appear smoother.
Basically if ICS doesn't drop below 60fps or have memory que issues then technically we wouldn't see project butter. We don't even technically see it. We only notice it when the system chugs, and if project butter kicks in properly, we won't even see that. lol
Well its subjective, you need to ask yourself what do you mean by smoothness? For me its fast respons when opening apps and having no lag or stutterings. For this JB leak li8 does the job
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
people keep raving about how smooth the iphone is but it's noticeably slower than android, esp the high end ones.. the smoothness is just there to cover the lags
I have owned 5 iPhone's and I can tell you now that ios strongest point is the consistently fast transitions. You can move around the OS 10x faster than android. Android is filled with loads of pointless animations and transitions that just make it slower.
I found my problem to be a widget called application manager. It caused a stutter in my transition from Page to Page. I minimised this and now it's smooth.
But I'd still argue that there is no difference between my girlfriends ICS and my JB
