Notification sound cuts off . . . - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all
Like title says everytime I get a text the notification sound plays for like 1 second then goes off.
Had the phone since release day and it hasn't done that before.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Have you enabled Sound+Vibrate? I found that the SMS notification sound was cut to be the length of the vibration - got around it by creating a new, longer vibration (handy feature that).

Yeah I have got vibration on . . .how do I make a longer vibrate for text message??

Settings > Sound > (Ringtone & notifications) Device vibration > then create a new one. After hitting create, keep pressing the screen to get the length or number of vibrations you want.

same here ...
I'm having the same issue with my new S3. I have created a longer vibration pattern as you suggested, and this seems to fix it for stock notification sounds. But if I try to use one from Zedge for example, it happens again.
I'm going to assume this is a bug they are going to fix the 'inspired by nature' sounds are ok, but I'd like to be able to set my own - with vibrate activated.
Will keep an eye on this thread, and update if I hear anything. Cheers.

still happening here stock sound or not ... hopefully patched soon :-( .... I was beginning to wonder if it's related to any of the apps I have installed, but unlikely as this happened right after a factory reset with no non stock apps installed .... (**I had imported my SMS history from a backup**)
Ok ... so a little more diggin found this on another forum ...
I figured it out, figured I'd post in case someone else comes looking for the same information.
For me, SMS's were causing this. Specifically the problem occurs when conversations began to get very long. I realised after a friend SMS'd me and it played the sound perfectly fine, but cut off while playing it when my partner SMS'd me.
TL;DR: Caused by long conversation history for whatever reason, delete messages to remove the notification issue.
i deleted the long history between myself and my wife ... and it's working properly

I've the same problem.... You have the sensor move "intelligent notification" enabled or disabled???

I have it turned on, but like I say in my previous post, once i shortened my message history, the problem went away ... I don't know how many messages start causing the problem.
My SMS history retention solution is:
limit thread length on phone to 150 and use SMS Backup+ from market to back up everything. That way when the phone drops a message due to thread size, I still have a backup in my gmail account.
hopefully that's it fixed.
Have you tried the suggestions above?

Yes, I limit to 100 sms, but the problem is not fixed....
Now I turned off the sensor move "intelligent notification", and seems to be fixed...
Please, try and send you feddback...
Thank you....

Not just me then.
I'll try these tips one by one and see what resolves it. I have limited the text history to 100 to start with, lets see.

@marcus46
I don't have the problem anymore, so cant replicate it.
I assume by intelligent notification, you mean 'smart alert' under the 'motion' menu?

Whit 100 sms on phone, the problem is not fixed.... now I try with 50 sms....
It's a bug....

I have the same problem with my notifications. It cuts off the sound, sometimes almost instantely, other times I get all of it.
Will try to turn off smart alert and see if that fixes it.

my suggestion would be to back up and then remove ALL conversation threads. Then test. If it works then re-import you sms history and test again.
At least doing this you will know one way or another if it's related to the sms history on your phone.
.... worked for me, but that's not to say it will work for everyone, may just have been a coincidence, but seems too much of a coincidence to not be related.
Good luck!

Ok, I've found the bug... If i have selected the limits of message and "delete old message", when the conversation is "empty" the sounds cut off.... If I don't selected "delete old message".... It's all ok....
Sorry for my bad english....

Thank you. This has indeed solved the notification issue.

Thanks for your reply. Just for clarity, which solution worked for you?

Untick delete old messages in options. I'm guessing when you hit the limit, a new message triggers delete old message and messes with the notification sound.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA

So your SMS history just grows unchecked? or do you have another way of managing your thread sizes?

[Q] [REQ] Leo sms scrolling more smoother

Hi guys.! i saw that when i open a sms's topic in my phone, after the load of all sms, i notice that the scrolling up or down is very stuttered and slow...so, there is a method or registry tweak that speed up this scrolling operation.?
i have the same problem , like whenever i go to my sd card it takes so long to scroll down it like freezes up for a second
Just delete some of them. I noticed that when I get around 75-100 messages from one person that when I reply back there is like a 5 second delay for when I can start typing. Deleting the messages works for me.

He's right. I've read that this is the HTC Messaging Client flaw and there's nothing can be done except for changing your default messaging client. Yeah, sometimes the lag is so bad I can hardly type.

But XDA-dev can write an application that can solve this problem.? or try to fix it in any mode.? (es. with registry modification) i think that this is a bad problem... I found here a post where a developer added an encription page for the message client, but nobody do an application that solve this stupid lag. I hope that there will a solution soon..in the other side, the HTC support doesn't do nothing for this. And for a phone as HD2 is a big bug (i think so). Any suggestions.?

[APP] TexTab [Updated: Released to Market!]

Update: TexTab has been released in the market! Thanks to everyone who participated in the beta. Download links:
- Full Version
- Lite Version
TexTab is an SMS app for Android tablets. It allows you to connect your Android 2.1+ tablet to your Android 2.1+ phone over Bluetooth and send/receive SMS messages on your tablet as if you were sending them from your phone.
I've been working on this app for some time now and I feel that it is ready for public beta testing. I encourage everybody to download and install the app on both your phone and tablet, and please provide feedback here.
App Features:
- Honeycomb optimized, though not required
- Push menu button to connect devices via bluetooth, with option to select a device to automatically connect to in settings
- Conversation threads use your Google contact information to display contact info
- Widget with button to enable/disable service, and displays connection information
Known Bugs:
- Messages not saving to outbox on some devices
- Sometimes unable to connect from one device. Seems to fix after turning bluetooth off then on, on OTHER device.
- Delivery reports are not always reliable, when messages are sent or received very quickly
- Visual issues/ghosting when using Swype keyboard in portrait orientation
- Performance issues on Samsung Galaxy Tab 7"
Future Development/Requested Features:
- New layout for 7" tablets
- Wifi functionality for increased range
- UI improvements
- Option to sync contacts with phone rather than cloud
- Sync sms history with phone
- Option to mute phone notifications
- Mark incoming messages as "read" on phone
- Popup dialog on received message when app is not in foreground
- MMS support
- Ability to use existing SMS app (GoSMS, Handcent, etc) to send/receive messages on ANOTHER phone
- suggestions?
Installation and Use:
Download the attached zip file and extract it somewhere on your computer. Copy the extracted file, TexTab.apk, onto both of your devices. Find the .apk file using File Manager or your favourite file browser and run it on both devices to install. Once installed, you can access it like any other app, and you can long-press on the homescreen to add the widget.
Once in the app, push the menu button to connect to a paired bluetooth device. If your devices are not paired, simply make one of them discoverable using Menu Button > Make Discoverable and then on the other device use Menu Button > Connect a Device > Scan for Devices to pair the two devices and establish a connection.
Once a connection is established, the devices should show their proper views. If not, click the settings button and change the Device Type. Under settings, you can also select the option to automatically connect to a paired device on startup. You can also enable or disable the bluetooth service under settings, or by using the button on the widget.
To send a message, either type a phone number into the Phone Number... field, or tap the Send To... button to choose a contact from the cloud. Type the message in the Enter a Message... field and tap send. Received messages will automatically show up as long as the app is enabled.
I look forward to any feedback/bug reports/praise/insults you may have!
Changelog:
See attached text file
This sounds awesome! Thanks a lot man.
Could you maybe throw up some instructions for everyone...
Edit: works great so far. Looking foward to the updates!
I updated the OP with installation and usage instructions. Let me know if they're not clear!
Cant wait to give this a try! Awesome
Will deffinately try this, sounds like what I've been looking for!
You say Future Development for WiFi, 2 ways I could suggest to have that.
1) If the tab is tethered to the phone for data (this is how I get my WiFi only tab to have data at work)
2) If they are on the same WiFi network, say I'm at home. Phone is connected to home WiFi and tab is connected to home WiFi.
Just some thoughts
*Edit*
Ok, tried it out and thats pretty cool! I like how the message shows up on the phone and the tab. Is there a way to pull down recient conversations (say from the last 24 hours) incase you wanted to continue a previous conversation? Also, if read on the tab or phone, could it show read on the other device?

This is exactly how the wifi support will work. It will still require the connect to device step, but the range will be limited by your wifi network rather than your phones bluetooth signal.

I've toyed with the idea of syncing sms history with a contact, unfortunately though any operations which involve using sms history are unsupported in the Android SDK and could break my app in the future. Marking a message as read is subject to the same problem. I'll look into it some more.
I appreciate the feedback, keep it coming!
I wanna suggest something, look at the app called texter, and the chrome app, then take a look have they work. They work by signing in on your google account on an app on the android phone, and the signing in at the same account on chrome, npw you can sms from chrome throw your phone and recive them, no matter where your phone is, it just need 3g connetion. This is like chrometophone. If you could get it working in this way it would be awsome! And the ofc still the bluetooth or something other when the tab not have internet connection
Loving this app so far, just wanted to report a bug. When a new contact sends a text, it seems to duplicate the view of prior conversations. I have one conversation that's up to three alternate views!
Edit: After a reboot, the duplicates disappeared.

Thanks, added it to the list. As a temporary fix, tapping the settings button and then tapping back will reload the contacts list and they should disappear.
Also I can't seem to delete conversations by long pressing. Is there another way?
I haven't implemented this. I'll consider it a feature suggestion! Are you wanting to delete specific messages within a thread, or whole thread for a contact?
I was actually working on something exactly like this. I did not end up getting much work done though. If you would like any help, just let me know.
Dude, your App is awesome ! ive searched for days for something like this. the only other option is syncsms and that one doesnt support "push", only "all 5 min sync". But your solution via bluetooth is just awesome
ive allready installed it on 5 different transformers for my friends. we are all very happy and would like to donate for your work.
As soon as your App is final, you should totaly put it on market for 1-2$ or more. you will be rich buddy !
Greetings from Germany, keep up the good work. ive allready bookmarked your thread =)
PS: Could you implement the function to mute the notification sound?

I won't name any names, but there is at least one other implementation of this idea. My app goes about it a little bit differently.

Just a contact thread. Specific messages would be a good option if you want this to be a full fledged texting app, but then the deletion wouldn't propogate to the phone without some magic. If this app is intended to be a messenger though, an extension of the phone when the tablet just so happens to be around, I'd like the ability to keep that interface clean and current so its not bogged down with out of date texts.
Edit: Keeping with the 'extension of the phone' idea, you could have an option to clear the text database after a certain amount of time disconnected from a device.
a friend of mine just told me that his phone is acting wierd.
he installed the app and send me 5 texts over his pad and i got them all. but his phone wont show what he wrote and in his phone there are only the sms from me and not his. we both use the lg optimus 2x.
and also his phone send 2 sms to the number "555555555" with text "default body". right after he installed the app and tried to send texts over his pad.
any idea?

I have an idea about what's happening here. As I mentioned in an earlier post, any operations that involve your phones SMS history are unsupported in the Android SDK. It sounds like your particular phone model doesn't access SMS history in the same way as other phones, so the app is unable to save sent messages in your phones SMS history.
The number "5555555555" and "default body" are used when there is a problem saving the data to your phone. The phone was told that a message was sent to that number; but no SMS was actually sent.
I'll try and find a workaround for this phone.
Do other people using this phone model have the same problem? Or any other LG phone?
No one else have that issue.
we both use the same lg and we both use a modaco rom. the only difference is, iam using modaco version ~16 and he version ~19. so the problem should lie in the difference of that roms. he just got furios because he tought the app had send 2 sms to a pricy number...
after reading your explanation we saw that everytime he sends a text to me he got a 55555555 sms with default body, so its realy the fact that his phone cant save the textmessage into the threaded sms history. its send, but not saved. on the other hand it flawlessly work on my phone. i can send a text on my pad and see it almost directly on my phone in the threaded history. funny tho =) now we're gonna flash his phone to another rom.
i'll keep an eye on this thread. it would be realy cool if you would mention it somewhere when u think u found a workarround. we will test it then =)
ah and we found another bug just now. when i want to write a new sms to contactB i have no choice to choose the number to send. so my girlfriend for example have 3 different numbers, and the app want to use the first number of the contact, in this situation its her home number.. no way to send a sms to that one ^^

Thanks for the clarification. It must be an incompatibility with the rom then.
I'll repeat for clarity: when you see a message to the number "5555555555" its simply a problem with the phone not saving the information properly. An SMS has NOT been sent to this number.
Please let me know if flashing a different rom fixes the problem!

[Q] HUGE Annoying Messaging Problem On Stock

I have a huge and annoying messaging problem on stock. Here's my problem. I text somone and the conversation is formed. When they text me back their message pops up on top of mine and says I've received it at a completely different time! When I text back, the message appears directly below my other message I sent... and so on.. So the messages get all jumbled up! This is REALLYannoying.. HELP?
ANYONE????!!!!
Which ROM are you using and which messaging app?
I'm using stock ROM (2.1 Update 1 with sense).. with the default messaging app.

Ok. One thing to try. Go to 'manage applications ' then delete data from messages app. This shouldn't delete your messages but you may want to back them up first. Then restart your phone. That is all I can suggest, unless you have thousands of messages, in which case I' d suggest to delete quite a few. Other than that I don't know unless its a carrier problem.
Just thought of one more obvious answer. Go to date and time settings and see if 'network provided values' is checked

[Q] Blocking mode not working with whatsapp?

Hello.
I'm using a German version of the Galaxy S3 with stock 4.1.1 ROM.
I own it since few days, coming from iPhones and I'm still learning how to use it.
One very useful thing I've found is the blocking mode. I use it at night to stop notifications sound and to permit only my family calls to go through.
Whatsapp notifications, though, are still coming through and I'm forced to manually reduce the notifications volume to zero.
Is it a bug or am I missing something?
I've tried setting the blocking mode with both time range and "always", but no differences at all.
Thanks.
I was woken up this morning by whatsapp messages, so if anyone has an answer it'd be appreciated.
I am having the same problem.. i think the problem is with whatsapp itself it must be a bug as when u go to notification settings the "ringer" whats comes up as default tone not the notification tone.
hope this get resolved quick! i have emailed whatsapp but got standard email template... delete app ... reboot re install ..etc
No one has a solution?
I have the same problem but a month or two before it did worked. I guess that maybe an update of whatsapp has disabled this. It very annoying waking up because of that horrible whatsapp noise.
Update
Just installed JB 4.1.2 and the problem is still there.
So it seems to be a Whatsapp problem, and it's a very stupid management of the notifications.
The notifications should be managed by the system and if the system says "shut up" ALL notifications should comply.
For me this is a point in favor of iOS.
P.S.: not a fan boy of course. I own both devices and it's normal I compare them.
WhatsApp uses a different method to sounf notificiations, this is why it can sound notifications even playing music (other apps would mute/pause the music for the notification)
I guess someonr could patch WhatsApp, my smali knowledge isn't that good to do it myself.

I understand, but if Google implements a kind of "do not disturb" mode it should know that some apps can use music as notification sound and block that too...

[SOLUTION] Blocking Mode WhatsApp Sounds
First of all, I do know that this is a fairly old thread, HOWEVER, it is still the first result on google for "blocking mode whatsapp", so i figure this is where people look. So i hope you will forgive me.
I have found a solution to the very annoying problem which many people seem to suffer from.
I have found a way to include the whatsapp sounds under the android blocking mode.
You will need the LightFlow app, (which i believe is a must have app for the S3 anyways (OP said he uses a s3)).
after you got light flow:
1: In What's app:
- disable notification sounds for incoming messages(not in light flow, in whats app). set it to silent or disable at all
2: The go to light flow and:
- enable sound notifications for whats app
- set what ever notification sound you would like to have for whats app when blocking mode is NOT enabled
- under Sounds-->Volume control method-->tick "Android standard notification volume"
Now it you enable blocking mode, it also blocks what's app sounds and if blocking mode is disabled, everything is normal.
hope that helps....took me quite a while to figure it out.
edit: oh and i do not have any affiliation with the light flow app or their developers!!! i just used it for changing lights and came across the sound feature by chance!!!
its a shame. other blockers block it, why can't the native JB also do it?
furstrating. didn't want to install another software on the phone when the block mode works so well, except for whatsapp of course.
Does this exist with 4.2.2 as well?

Yeah, I've got a Nexus 4 on 4.2.2 and the issue is on that as well. It's a problem with the way whatsapp handles notifications, not the Android firmware version.
Thanks Tyler D for the solution, will be testing this later today.
I am experiencing the very same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S4 running 4.2.2.
Do you have any news? I tried to email whatsapp support a few days ago but I am still waiting their reply.

Mysterious problem with notification sound on incoming text messages

I used to use a HTC One Max. About one month ago, I started getting no sound when a text was sent to me, at least 90% of the time. I tried multiple things to fix it.
1. Tried 4 different SMS apps, with only one being installed at any one time. This is including the built in system one.
2. Checked all sound and notification settings, both in the SMS apps, and in the Android settings.
3. Did a complete factory wipe of the phone.
On Sunday, I got a brand new LG V10. The problem continues. . WTH!!?? My V10 was setup manually, no restore from a backup, and has not been hacked, rooted, etc. Is it possible the problem is with Verizon? I know there are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum, so I thought I would ask here! Any and all help would be appreciated!! :good:
PS: When this happens, the phone will also not vibrate
Wow! I must be the only person in the world that has this problem!
My phone updated to Marshmallow last week, and this problem continues. Does anybody have any ideas? I find it difficult to believe nobody else has had this same problem here . I did a Google search and I find others with the same problem, but most of them were caused by a setting on their phones. Verizon, at least one of their reps in the store where I bought my phone, also did not have an answer. Anybody??
I think people are not sure what your issue is.
Essentially you are not getting notification sounds when a new text arrives?

Have you checked the volume settings???
Thanks everybody! The problem is when I get a text message, most of time my phone makes no noise and will not vibrate. I have checked every setting possible. On my HTC, I was using Mood SMS and it worked great up until the last month I had it. On that phone, even after removing all SMS apps I installed from the Playstore and using the stock app. the problem continued. I will say that when I first went back to the stock messaging app, the problem initially went away, but returned the next day. On my V10, I have only had Mood and the stock app on it. I had Zedge installed, but removed it after downloading a few things from it. I read where other people had problems with apps like Zedge, but I have used it for a few years with no issues. Today I went back to the default SMS app on my V10, and so far it is working. If it stays working, great, but I will miss Mood. I really liked that app! I could factory reset my V10, but really do not feel like it!! Maybe other SMS apps do not do so well since you cannot remove or disable the stock one without rooting. I normally do not root my phones, but I guess since I pushed Marshmallow on it, I could not do it anyway.
