[Q] Formating Micro SD Card - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my S3 Pebble Blue is on it's way & I want to put all music & stuff on to my 64Gb Micro sd card.
Do I....
1: Format on the pc, if so which format & would the S3 still want to format when I put it in.
2: Format it in the phone & then remove & insert in to PC to transfer all my music & stuff?
I am familiar with android & formatting micro sd cards. I just wondered if being a 64Gb would be a different matter.

I also just received my SGS3 and inserted the SanDisk 64gb micro sdxc card.
I didnt format it, because it just seemed to work fine without formatting. Now I put all my data on it, but after a restart of the phone the card is suddenly corrupted...
In my phone it recognizes the card, but says its corrupted and needs to formatted. It then ejects the cards for safe removal. In my pc it doesn't recognise the card at all.
Does anyone have an idea on how to recover the data on it?
And what is otherwise the best way to format it?
Thx

RE:- 64GB MicroSDXC errors
I would use a external compatible Micro SDXC reader and connected it to your computer and try and recover the card on the PC. (first)
i) what operating system are you using on the PC.
ex-fat format problem in windows xp. If you have windows 7 it should be able to read ex-fat cards natively.
If you have xp you can try and install the
search for the knowledge base article 955704 on Microsoft Technet support package to enable xp to read ex-fat cards.
In the past I have used my external 9 in one reader to fix corrupted cards to recover the files from them using recuva or similar software it will restore the files onto your pc hard disk.
let me know how you get on.

Thanks a lot for the quick advice.
I don't have an external reader yet, so I ordered one just now. I have win7 on my pc, so I guess that will be ok. I'll try it later this week when I have the reader in.
Once I have it recovered (or not), what is the best practice for setting up the card? What's the best way to format it?

Free PC program Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva mount via USB or scard adapter.
Or even try Hexamob (need root) our some other file recovery app
When done, best and easiest to format through phone.

How to format micro SD

Hi,
I would like to format my micro SD card, but I don't know how to.
I know that there is an option that says " clear storage" but it is for internal storage only ? or can format as well the sd card?
I haven't any card reader on my pc, so I have no idea about how to do it from Hermes itself. .

Keep your micro sd in card reader , you can format it only from pc.(buy one card reader)
if you want format micro sd from device , you need a 3d part application , but from pc is better.

The resco explorer, has a format storage card utility
I have done it already, and works fine.
pocket mechanic works well, also finds errors, cleans up, makes coffee etc
If you're on XP, just right go into disc management, find the card, right click, and choose format...likely a similar method on Vista, but I haven't used it.
No third party tools needed, etc.
Edit, oops my bad, I misread that you didn't have a card reader for the pc.
Another vote for Resco explorer btw, I couldn't live without it.
Well, I got 4GB Micro SD. Formatting (FAT32) done through PC but never been possible through Artemis by any of the softwares mentioned here. The SD works fine under windows, but I gatta take it out in every new ROM or Radio flashing. Is there any way to make it being seen by Artemis DOS system?
Thanks

Delete the folder "MSMETADATA" on your storage card and do a soft reset and that should work
Unless of course the sd card has failed... I had one or two do that... All you have, if the pc won't recognise to format, is a lump of plastic.... You'll have to get a new one...
phone no longer recognizes sdhc card
Okay, guys I flashed my hermes this morning with this
http://rapidshare.com/files/2179382...1.255.1_102_6275_1.38.00.10_108_Ship.exe.html and now it no longer recognizes any of my micro sd nor my micro sdhc cards. They come up on the computer but not on the device. I even installed the sdhc.777 cab and it still doesn't work. Help please...
refuse2bstopped, try a different os... If that doesn't work you may have a broken or misaligned pin in your usb reader on the Hermes. It may also just be dirty or have some corrosion on it. If you want to clean it use a cotton bud and some isopropyl alcohol (surgical spirits). DON'T USE METHYLATED SPIRITS... It leaves a residue.
Cheers...
sir...
im just wondering if my mini sd is busted and it has no use anymore..
why can my camera still recognize that there is still a memory card installed in to my unit that its even asking me to either save the picture's towards my unit or mmc
im just wondering if it can still be recognized by my unit can i still fix it/format it so that i could use it again...??
i know your the expert on this that's why i thought of asking you this..
thanks for reading my msg'
I like to look at things step by step
1. SD card isn't recognised by Hermes - not even detected...
2. Camera detects it - did you try taking a few pictures and seeing if it actually wrote them to the card? I had a phone that registered the card but kept throwing up "sd card corrupt" every time I tried to use it.
3. Does a PC recognise the sd card when inserted into a card reader? If you don't have 1 I'd make this a priority to get, a friend of mine bought one off ebay for $5 AUD including postage...
If the pc recognises it maybe you should reformat it fat32. remember to backup any data first...
4. If the pc and camera have no problem then I'd start suspecting the Hermes... I have two sd cards so I have no problems testing but you may need to either get a smaller card - I use a 512 for flashing the os, or find someone who can lend you theirs to test. If the 2nd card reads then either the card is bung or the Hermes has a problem with it (incompatibility has been known to happen). Clean the card reader as best you can with isopropyl alcohol and a piece of cloth. There may be some type of corrosion or dust on the sd card reader contacts.
These are the steps I have taken to work out if the sd card or Hermes is a fault. Generally I find its the card (happened once to me and once to a friend).
Hope this helps...
Cheers...
Been through this. Very recently, actually. Like, last night.
I don't have a microSD reader and I found myself needing to reformat my microSD in my Hermes to FAT32. I was trying to do SD flashes. Long story.
Anyway, know what I did? I used WM5torage. As long as your ROM is functional and your SD card isn't wasted, activate WM5torage and have WinXP format your "USB Mass Storage Device" for you through My Computer. It only affects the SD card.
I mean, it worked for me.
sd 2gb
i have i sd 2gb card, my pc can see it and use it but only on fat format. i cant format fat32, i get an error(not able to complete). i cant see or use it at all on my phone. (the only selection i have to format (on my pc) is fat,fat32, default unit size)
please help, so i can use the card on my pc and phone
edit:i have searched and the only thing i saw was prog. to format sd, that prog let my pc to see the card, but lost the ability to see it in my phone. (sorry i dont remember what the prog was)
A very good (shareware) 3rd party programm comes from softwinter (storage tools)
rgs
If the PC picks it up, right click on the sd card and select format. Make sure its fat32 though. Easiest thing to do... NO 3rd party apps needed...
i guess i wasnt clear enough. my pc comes up with an error "not able to compleate" when i try to format my card in fat32 (that is when it is in my pc), but i can format fat (but thats no help for me). if i put the card in my device, it doesnt see it, so if i link my device to pc, pc doesnt see the card. so still cant format via pc.
i tried 3rd party as noted, as i thought, if my device cant see it the app cant see it.
thanks for trying, but still in the same boat.
it is a new card too, im woundering if i bought a bum card and i should return it for a new.
any suggestions welcome
Reboot pc then try again... I've had this happen too and a reboot seemed to fix the problem. Just a psychotic computer problem...Sometimes pcs can be..... TROUBLE..
Cheers...
i tried that again, still doesnt work. but i did see autoplay run this time, i think that may be my prob.. 2 progs. trying 2 run on the same source at the same time. now trying to find a way 2 shut it off (like i really need it anyway)

Transferring files from internal to external sdcard

I notice that I have been getting corrupted pictures. Has this happened to anyone else but me? Or is it the SdCard?
Is it a brand new micro sd card? what's the capacity? When I first inserted my brand new 32gb micro sd card it wasn't recognizing it. So I formatted mine via pc as fat32 and it didn't give me any issue after that. Try that and hopefully it works for you.

It was my first microsd card, 32 gb Gskill class 10. I formatted via SDformatter on PC.
Try to format the card on the phone itself. With my new 64gig card, I try to do so on my PC and gave me problems at first. After trying it on my phone it has worked flawlessly thus far.
Be sure to unmount the drive properly in Windows. SD cards can corrupt when you just unplug the phone without unmounting the drive first.
Alternately, on your phone you can switch to 'charge only', which does the same thing.

[Q] MicroSD card issue

Hello there,
I just bought a 32GB Class 10 Samsung MicroSD card.
After inserting it, I made sure the phone sees it, and the computer sees it.
So I started transfering files to it...
Every time I try to transfer files to it, the cards sort of unmount, the computer stops seeing the External/Internal storage drivers info (0/0 KB and no files).
I realized I might be needing to format it, so I went to recovery and formatted the external card. Still no good...
If I don't try to transfer files, the internal sd card still works fine.
Am I formatting it wrong? or some other issue? Did I buy a faulty card?
Thanks!
P.S. Some info incase needed:
Using Galaxy S2 obviously, Resurrection Remix ICS 4.04
My PC is running XP SP3

Added some pictures to demonstrate what I mean.

Pic 2: The error I get, doesn't mean much except that the pc doesn't recognize the storage device, but just for the heck of it.

If unsure about the quality of your SD card google for h2testw. It is a Windows test software you can use to test your SD card.
Tried formatting it... still no good.
And h2test tries to copy a file repeatedly and after some time it also gets stuck like I do manually...
I was running into the exact same issue as you with an SD card awhile back. Tried many, if not all of the suggestions listed here. Sometimes, the cards just die on you, especially at the most inopportune times...

Open CMD
Type format [letter_of_external_card]: /x
ex.
format E: /x
and wait.
Then format again (through Windows Explorer) with this settings:
FAT32
default allocation size
fast formatting checked
and share the results.

Failure of h2test is normally due to defective hardware.
For SD cards I do not really know but when it comes to USB sticks there are many around that are just cheap crap. You could for instance buy a 8GB stick that will happily accept 8GB of data but only store 4-6GB!. This is where h2test comes into play: it will not only write but also read and therefore check if the data written was really stored in the flash.

Class 10? That card might be just too fast for your hardware.
I'm using Sandisk 32GB Class 4 and never had any problems.
I have tried some Class 6 and Class 8 cards with very various results.
Only class 8 card I found correctly working in my device was Memorex, but it was only 4GB.
So I gave up on fast cards...
its fake or corrupt, did you buy the samsung off a retailer , you always test flash with h2testw before you use it, speed is not the issue,i got a class 10 32gb i had many 16,256,4gb fakes, only 3.7 gb usable droped down to 1kb write then windows couldnt read the storage so you reformat again.

[Q] Strange Ext-SD problem

Hi all,
I've got a very strange problem.
my ext sd card gone crazy today.
I'm currently using the lates official stock rom and didn't have any problem untill this morning.
When I press either home or turn on button the lock screen turn on in 2-3 delay and got the following messages in the statusbar:
"preparing sd card"
"sd card removed"
"empty or corrupted sd card"
and the phone doesn;t recognize my card.
Sometimes I need to reboot, sometimes just use the home butten when lockscreen applied and ok.
I've got a genuine Sandisk 32GB class10 microsdhc.
What do you think guys?
That is more common that it should, unfortunately.
Your card is really corrupted, and I've had it happen to my about 4 times with the S II and once with the S III (with different brands and sizes of uSD cards)
What you should do is:
- turn off the phone and remove the uSD card
- using a card read (of any kind), insert the card in the computer
- Windows (if that's the case) will detect the card is faulty and will ask you to format the card. SAY NO.
- try to copy/backup whatever file you can from the uSD card to your computer
- after that, backup the uSD card using FAT32
- copy the files back from the computer to the uSD card
- insert the card in the phone and turn it on.
There's two ways to fix this eitger by replacing ur current sd card or formatting this one using a computer.

So the card is almost empty, because I use dropbox and everything will be saved there,so I dont care if I loose everything.
what do you mean when you say"backup the uSD card using FAT32"?
how can I do that? I know how to format the card to FAT32/FAT etc but this is not clear for me.
1more thing:when my phone says"sd card corrupted" and remove it from the device and plug in to the pc the computer not recognize at all.I have to reboot my computer to recognize it...

sorry! I meant: format it using FAT32. don't do a quick format, but a full format (even although we aren't supposed to do that to flash media).

ok,thanks and I'll give it a try
tried all the supported.formats without any success...
phone keep saying "sd card removed" sd card empty" however if I connect to the pc while I got these messages at statusbar the sd card starts working the oc recognize it,I can copy/paste read to/from the card and when I unplug it from pc it works untill I use the lockscreen...and all the **** starts again...very annoying.
just tried with my old gs2 and works flawlessly...
Similar issue solved with chkdsk /f
I realize this thread has been inactive for a while, but I found it by doing a search in Google after having the same "SD card damaged" error and thought someone might benefit from some extra input.
I solved a similar issue with my SD card by mounting it on a Windows PC (which did recognize it, however as unformatted) and running a "chkdsk /f" command from the windows command line (note: my card was already formatted as FAT32 before the issue occurred). CHKDSK did the trick - it now mounts again flawlessly on Android and I am not missing any of the 20GB of data on it.

[Q] SD-Card Failed - Not Recognised

Hello Guys.
I own a Samsung Galaxy S iii and I have insterted a Micro SD 8GB Card, which I was using for quite a while.
The other day, while on a trip and taking pictures, the SD Card got full and from that instant forward the phone stopped recognised it for some reason. It gives the following message: - SD Card Blank or it has an unsupported file...
I have also used an adapted to connect it on the computer, but the pc does not recognise it either.
Therefore, my question is: Is there some way I can retrieve the data (pictures) from the SD Card?
Thanks.
Download the sd formatting tool and use your pc to full format the card, if that doesn't work then bin it and buy a new one.
As for the data, the file allocation table probably corrupted when the card was filled. If you search on Google there are programs for the pc that might repair parts of it but I doubt you will get much back, it's like trying to unscramble eggs.
