[Q] Will EVO 4G LTE microUSB port support HDMI output? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I know there's devices that use microUSB => HDMI cables to output to TV's - is the EVO 4G LTE one of them?
That would be great if it is! Has anyone with a cable tried?

Yes it does, but you need an MHL adapter.
Here are several to choose from: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=mhl+adapter
EDIT: To clarify, you can't just use a MicroUSB to HDMI cable. You explicitly need the MHL adapter.

Thanks for the information, I was spoiled with my OG Evo and then MoPho. I remember looking at this when I briefly had the Evo3D.

Yeah the new EVO can...you can buy a special adapter from Sprint that connects to your TV and you can use it to WIRELESSLY stream videos from your EVO!

Mhl adapter, got mine $15 tmo website

I bought mine off Ebay for about $8 shipped. The quality is better than the EVO 3D, but not nearly as good as my TF101.
I bought one to use with my broken 3D in the kid's room. Neither of us want to give up our tablets so that she can watch Spongebob in her room. It might look better on 720P screens, but I don't have any to test it out on.

Theres a lovely site called Monoprice. Dirt cheap cables including MHL adapters ($10.20) and HDMI cables...

Unfortunately yes and no. The new Evo has one port that is micro usb and it will need a dongle. But when you get the dongle then you can use your old mini hdmi cable.
Also to clarify. This new type of connection will let you charge your phone through your mini hdmi cable. So its a great invention.

Yea the usb port on the Evo 3d will allow for more innovation, unfortunately it renders the old cable obsolete without an adapter

I think that the idea of HDMI output on a phone, although a neat idea has never been great for implementation but now with the bump in speed and 2nd core, its not a bad idea!

Sorry but the new micro USB to HDMI is the future. It allows charging and USB function and HDMI in one port. It has many advantages over just the HDMI port alone. Look it up, its very exciting.
Darn n i spent a whole 4 dollars on mine

Darn lol yea I spent 6 bucks on mine but it feels like a waste. But that happens with all technologies I guess :/
The money doesn't bother me as much as all the time I spent trying to find the stupid cable in the first place, and then trying to find one that was actually reliable, and figuring out which TVs it worked on.
I hope we don't have the same issue trying to find MHL adapters, and TVs that support it. I'm sure in the long run it'll be great, unless it suffers the same fate as micro-HDMI and gets replaced again next year.

MHL Adapter

I can't seem to find one of these for the Flyer. I have one that came with my Samsung Infuse but it doesn't work....the video never stope flickering. Has anyone been able to get an HTC one?
So you do get video out from the flyer through the usb port using a mhl cable but it flickers? That is an interesting find.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
wow...so do we have a video out through the usb port????? didn't know that!
Possible soluton to fix flicker using MHL cable...
Hi Kirbo,
Have you considered going into your advanced monitor/graphics settings? I don't know if this will work for the Flyer, but for my set up, I have dual 23" monitors, one hooked up to my laptop via HDMI and the other via VGA. Once in a while, my left monitor, the one with the HDMI flickers.
The reason it flickers is that it somehow reverts to 30hz instead of 60hz. I can fix in a few seconds by changing it back to 60hz. You may want to try that... Just a suggestion.
I am curious now about either finding an HDMI docking station or one of those MHL cables you speak of.
Take care!
My old.incredible.tv out cables fit the usb port perfectly but don't work. My guess.is there will be some cable.HTC will sell
the adapter from the infuse should work just fine. there was a YouTube review showing that they used the infuse MHL adapter with the flyer and it worked just fine.
Where can you get one of these adapters?
I have tested it with the adapter from the Infuse and it worked just fine for me. The adapter requires power, which is provided by the charger that came with the Infuse. The Flyer projects better video than the Infuse, at least for the apps. Angry Birds looked real nice on a large screen TV. I have not messed with any of the video settings.
The MHL adapter for the Sensation from TMobile works great.
You need to have a micro usb charger plugged in though.
No flickering. Woohoo
please, have you a link from ebay or other sites? I cannot find it

I ordered it just now hoping that you're right about compatibility, anyway...the official HTC adapter will be not available till august.
Would this work? Only $25 on Amazon... (Not in stock right now.)

(EDIT: Apparently it will not... MicroUSB vs ExtMicroUSB on the Flyer.)
I'm a little frustrated with accessory availability for my Flyer... Can't find the white dock, can't find the MHL adapter... (And if you can, the prices are kind of a rip-off.)
I ended up ordering the Fujitsu pen for $27 shipped from B&H. Screw $60+.

damn, I could not see any video signal. I know that it need a power, but plugging in a microsb cable from a pc or a power adapter (I used a motorola one) his led does not power on, but on the flyer "blink" the sign "hdmi connected".

Sprint has the HTC branded MHL adapter available on their website or in the stores through their Direct Ship process. $40 with a 1 year warranty.
I found something similar to this on Amazon yesterday... It was black, and HTC branded. Oddly, I can't find it now, but I can't remember the verbage I used in my search. If I find it again, I'll post it.

[Q] HDMI Out cable?

I've searched Amazon for the HDMI out cable (mini-usb to HDMI) and it came up with a lot of EVO 4G compatible ones, will that one work or not? I recall viewing a video review saying the hdmi cable for the EVO 4G isn't compatible with the 3D Evo, but I could be mistaken.
You NEED a micro-usb to hdmi cable. the ones for the evo 4g are JUST mini-HDMI to regular HDMI. Check the HTC website or wait until after the 3D comes out; there should be plenty coming out (it might even be included when you buy the phone?)

I have a Micro-HDMI for my EVO. I haven't read what size the port on the 3D is so I can't say for sure. From Monoprice you could buy both and still pay less than you would buying from Sprint or HTC.
Edit: Apparently according to this it doesn't have one, it uses some different method of USB to HDMI

It's a Micro USB to HDMI connection. The biggest benefit is that it charges your phone while connected. Biggest drawback, your TV has to have compatibility built into it.

Sorry, I should have clarified. You're right. I was just talking about video out from the phone to the TV. The charging stuff, I'm not sure about.
Your tv will support it, you will have a dongle that attaches to from the micro usb to the mini HDMI port that provides function to the TV. Its called MHL technology and its very exciting. Charging your phone while you watch movies on your phone on your LCD or LED television is awesome. There are many, many functions for this technology and they are just starting to test what it is we really need to get this working without the dongle that is required without the TV or monitor needing the technology. Youtube MHL Technology and you will find your answer.

Still learning about this myself but from what I've read with mhl v.1.0 you can't, it doesn't support it. I don't know if the port will eventually be able to support it with later versions of the standard. Also, if you buy a cable when they're first available it's possible they'll only support 1.0 and you might need a new cable when later revisions of the standard are finalized to support the new features (similar to HDMI).

Kind of disappointed that I'll have to buy an adapter for my phone to charge while using HDMI out, this technology is cool, but the downside is that no TVs support it (yet). And I just bought a 42" like two weeks ago.
Am I mistaken or will all the 3D pics/vids essentially will only be viewable on EVO 3Ds? Like you'll see them but they won't be in 3D, regardless of TV or monitor claiming 3D functionality.
So now that the phone is out, has anyone tried out a generic micro usb to HDMI on the EVO 3D?
I can't seem to find any tv-out cables specific to the EVO 3D, so I want to be sure any micro usb to HDMI cable will work.

Micro usb won't work. You need.an MHL adapter. Then a regular hdmi cable plugs into the MHL adapter, and you plug your charging cable into the MHL adapter so it charges while its mirroring hdmi.

This is a real disapointment. I bought a micro Genie cable for my EVO 4G. Now it sits there wasting away. I can't understand why they couldn't keep the mini Genie port on the 3D. Now I got to spend another 40-50$ if i want to hook my 3D up to hdmi.

Interesting - does that adapter also give you a port to charge while you do TV Out? It's impossible to tell from the small picture on t-mobile site and for some reason the "details" link doesn't work.

Funny, that thread was the first suggestion in the "Here are similar threads we found:" dialog when I created this thread.
Anyways, my question is pertaining to the last couple posts in that thread. They were talking about the official HTC AC M500 12-pin MHL adapter. I know it's the official MHL adapter for the Amaze, but what I'm wondering is why I'd spring for that adapter, when for just a bit less, I can get the official HTC AC M490, which is the 5-pin version? Not only is it cheaper, but it'll work with any phone that has a standard 5-pin USB/MHL port.
If you've tried the 5pin then you know that it disconnects almost all the time. Plus the charging while plugged in doesn't work too well. I have the 12pin and I don't have to sit there with a steady hand while connected to the tv and don't have to worry about the battery discharging while watching a movie from my sdcard. I prefer quality over quantity.

Yeah, I haven't tried any of them. I guess I've not had any problems with standard 5-pin usb charges staying in place, but perhaps the MHL adapter causes more strain on the connector. If I get the 5-pin it'd also work for my girlfriend's evo3d.... choices
It will work if the EVO 3D uses mhl. Don't get me wrong the 5pin will work but you will start to get really frustrated if the plug or phone or table is slightly moved and you lose connection. Lol

I use a 5 pin your right about the charging watched a movie plugged in the whole time batt was at %20 at the end. Wrong about the connection though you must of had a bad one. I can pick up the phone wiggle it around and never loose the picture.

What I have found out regarding which is the proper adapter, and you are correct it's the HTC AC500 12-pin Ext-USB to HDMI MHL adapter (its the same MHL adapter that the HTC Flyer tablet uses). The micro "Ext-USB" connection and the fact that its twelve pins instead of a 5 pin connector do indeed make a difference in terms of functionality, quality, and performance. Although, that not to say that other MHL adapters with 5-pin connectors like the HTC AC490 adapter won't work on the Amaze, cause they do in terms of displaying video on your TV. However, the 5-pin adapter wont charge the unit while its plugged in, even if you have an MHL adapter that has its own AC power source. According to HTC that is the case at least, and from reading other comments, I assume that HTC isnt bullshitting.
I was also told by the HTC rep via email, that when you use the HTC AC500 12-pin Ext-usb MHL adapter, it actually allows the Amaze 4G to open up or enable a feature where the phone acts more like a playback remote for viewing videos and photos, and so basically it doesnt only just mirror image the display you see on the devices screen on the TV (in other words, it enables an app where you can select the file you wanna view from the app on the Amaze, and then you can use your phone to control the playback of the videos/files etc). I also found out, not only does using the correct MHL adapter enable some pretty cool functionality & features, it also will greatly improve the HD image and sound quality being sent to your TV. All the while, the 12-pin adapter will charge your phone in the process ...
For some people, I guess, those additional features and the improved image & sound quality won't be a deciding factor for them, and will go for the cheapest adapter they can find on eBay. For me however, I'd personally rather spend the additional $20-30 for the official HTC AC500 12-pin adapter.
... Only problem now though is, I can't for the life of me seem to find them anywhere, but you can get them direct from HTCs webstore. Only problem is HTC doesn't operate their official online Accessories Store in Canada ... and neither the US or nor the UK stores will ship items here. Poo

Menotek MHL adapter
I'm late to the thread but I thought I'd add my experience with a similar MHL adapter. I got one by Menotek from Amazon [sorry, can't post links yet]. Short story is that it works, but far for perfectly:
- it does not charge the Amaze while it is connected to my TV via HDMI
- if you unplug it and plug it back, it will not detect the phone and TV connection anymore. I need to restart the phone in order to re-establish the link
- it works great for low res graphics such as youtube, fpse (PSX emulator)
- it sucks for hi res such as netflix movies
While my main use for this MHL adapter is to play PSX games on my phone on by big screen TV, I am disappointed that it doesn't give high quality video from my netflix app.
I wonder if I should buy the aforementioned 12-pin MHL adapter which is also available from Amazon. Does anyone have personal experience with this adapter on their Amaze?
I got mine off ebay for about 8 dollars and its never disconnected on me, I can even play games on it... works great!

Dont remember which seller they were one of the top rated sellers though and the mhl adapter supports 25-75hz. It was just one of the many 8 dollar ones on ebay... Idk how many pins it is, its just a regular micro usb port that plugs into the phone and it charges. Never acted up on me on stock on and still works fine on Speed Rom 7.8. These new postings for mhl adapters on ebay for 8 dollars claim to be capable of outputting 3D but in reality that is a requirement of 120hz. I don't know if I can believe that (well maybe it can output 3D but not good 3D video)
I havent tried netflix on my phone to the tv yet, last I remembered the quality wasn't that great even streaming to a phone and watching family guy... Is there anyway to adjust or even trick net flix into streaming higher quality for tv use?
I just got a Sanoxy MHL cable and it works great I have a USB to micro USB from my computer plugged into it and the phone charges faster than it drains. I tested disconnecting the phone from it and then reconnecting to see if the TV would pick it back up and it did. I had Bluetooth GPS and WiFi going while running a linux rom over the TV browsing the internet for about a half an hour and my battery percentage was even higher when I was done.

I tested disconnecting the phone from it and then reconnecting to see if the TV would pick it back up and it did. I had Bluetooth GPS and WiFi going while running a linux rom over the TV browsing the internet for about a half an hour and my battery percentage was even higher when I was done.

How well does the battery hold up with local video, streaming, gaming?
I haven't been doing much gaming lately and I don't have netflix anymore and the only videos I have on the phone are short clips for showing friends, so I'm not sure but if I get Netflix back or decide to game out on this thing I'll let you know.

Good MHL to HDMI cable?

With the news of XBMC coming to Android I feel I gotta invest in one of these cables hahaha. Anyone test any out yet? I see a bunch on amazon but I'd like to hear from someone who has the same phone.
Picked up a PNY for $10 haven't had any problems....

Is it cutting out at all? all of the ones I found on amazon have at least a couple people saying that they cut out every once in a while.

Mine has never cut out. And is pretty much lag free. Just wish I could say the same for the medialink HD.

Just wanted to reiterate here. Bought three of these, used em with 4 HTC phones, work great, no problems.
The ones they sale at the TMobile store work good also.
Another +1 for the Monoprice link..
Ya just ordered it. Thanks!
get the media link from HTC. It's around $50-70 but it is wireless and has an hdmi port on it. Supports 1080p and it reflects the phone entirely on the tv.

YES.
According to the description on the monoprice site, the adapter has a micro-USB charging port on the side of the adapter.
I bought this one from Amazon since I have prime:

I have to have the regular usb power cable plugged into it for it to work with my TV and that charges my phone.
So it can also function as a 6ft power extender for charging if you don't use the HDMI part.
Happy with it for the price.
I have the HTC MHL adapter and I'm getting CRAZY lag when I play video games. I'm thinking it's sense, but I'm hoping it's the adapter.
Can any of the guys who bought an MHL cable try playing an nes/snes/genesis emulator while plugged in to the TV?
ya I'm getting a bunch of lag while playing HD video and audio cutting out with the Monoprice
update: seems that was a player issue? Was using MX player. Now I'm using Dice and and no lag.
monoprice....got that and a bright yellow hdmi cord for dirt cheap.
Anyone knows if those cables work on AOSP roms (cm10)?
