Hey XDA,
I'm running Android Revolution HD 3.0.0 with S-OFF and SuperCID. I am using Mobilicity as my carrier. When I first installed Revolution HD, I did not back up my APN's (it didn't say to do that in guide). After booting up for the first time, I was unable to use Mobile Network until I posted here asking why it wouldn't work, and I was told to put my APN's in.
After putting the APN in for Mobilicity, Mobile Network began to work. Here's the problem though - my phone is trying to use 4G on a network that hardly supports 3.5G. Prior to installing Revolution HD, my phone would switch between using 3G and HSDPA to manage battery consumption better. Now when I turn Mobile Network on, it consistently stays on 4G, burning up more power than before.
I can tell you that 4G is useless on Mobilicity because my data speeds are about 2Mbps download (Speedtest.net App).
Could someone provide me with APN to disable 4G from turning on, or if a different APN is not the solution, provide me with an alternative method.
Thank you so much XDA, you've been great,
Robert
Actually ARHD is based on T-Mobile's ICS, which actually switches between 3G and H (on T-Mobile they label it 4G but it's actually H), as I was saying, it actually switches but T-Mobile had HTC modify the system files to show 4G whether the phone is on 3G or H, it just shows 4G all the time, so calm down.
Next point is, your phone switching between 3G and 4G, it's not a form of saving power, it's just your phone showing what coverage it has, therefore your phone is constantly switching between the two, so your power consumption isn't to blame on your coverage if you're in basically the same areas as you were before flashing and your coverage remains similar, but most likely on some programs you have running in the background or well, you just find the phone more usable with ARHD and you're just glued to it more than you used to be. APN settings have nothing to do with 3G or 4G, most if not all carriers use a general apn, it's upto the devices capabilities to determine what data type would connect and what data coverage they provide.
Alternative to reduce power us would be to switch your phone to GSM (2G) coverage only, which would be slow, compared to your current 3G.
Okay thank you for your reply, but I will dispute the fact that ARHD does not use more power than Stock (or just the same).
Using the built in battery monitor, it shows me how fast my battery dies based on the type of usage (it has that graph thing, i'm pretty sure most android phone have it). The phone remains pretty much stagnant with battery usage when its screen is off, but when I turn the screen on, BAM, the battery begins falling vertically. If I get a chance I will upload a picture of my battery usage.
It is literally the same as stock, I honestly get no better battery life with ARHD than before. Although I am not saying that ARHD does not have its advantages such as running the OS much smoother and ICS being awesome.
Robert
Check if your brightness level is too high, I use auto brightness, ARHD is basically stock, just tweaked and a few additions to make it better and smoother.
You can also check the Amaze Bible thread for tips and tricks on improving battery life, it's a general list, so should be able to help, at least a bit.

Hi all.
I have had my N1 for a little over a week now, and the battery life i guess is normal for a pda with this power etc, but i read over on modaco that by changing over the settings from CDMA preferred to CDMA only, actually increased the battery life loads! So I tested this and indeed it does nearly double my battery life..
I have also now read from an add for the new HD2 that the battery life is again increased by swithching over to GSM only! Look at the battery details quoted for the HD2 below.
Talk Time –
Up to 320 minutes for WCDMA
Up to 380 minutes for GSM
Standby Time –
Up to 390 hours for WCDMA
Up to 490 hours for GSM
I am now testing GSM only, and guess that the battery life is going to increase yet again, awesome..
this looks promising but T-Mobile has lots of 3G dead spots scattered around even a major city like NYC, meaning if I would set the phone to WCDMA only and put it in my pocket, I would not receive any calls or data when not in a 3G area.

u do know that with WCDMA you will get far better speeds than just plain old gsm right?
Setting it to WCDMA only will actually drain your battery faster if you are in an area with poor 3G. So only use it when you have optimal 3G conditions.

Faster yes. But noway worth the hassle of toggling it on or off. Unless you don't like to charge your phone each night then its not a prob. I use 3G/wifi,music,games and my battery easily survives a day or two.
Cheers..

Thanks for that Amon_RA, and a personel thanks for for RA-nexus-v1.5.3
I guess my phone usage is split 50/50, i.e 50% at work with a max 3G signal, and 50% at home with a weak 3G signal. I definately saw a massive increase in my battery life when on WCDMA only, so changing to GSM should benefit me even more. I live in the UK and am on the Orange network, overall the 3G coverage is not to bad.
I will report back after a couple of days testing.
Good news for me: there is basically no 3G coverage here so guess I'll be GSM all the time. Getting my N1 this afternoon.
Is it just me or am I not seeing a 200% increase? 20% maybe.
how do i actually choose which band to use? been trying and didnt see any options.
in your dialer dial *#*#4636#*#* then go to phone information > set it to WCDMA only (3G only). Default is WCDMA preferred.
thanks! guessed i learned something new today
Hi again everyone..
Well one day into testing GSM only, what a difference in the battery life..
This is my default setting definately when on holiday to save on power, and when I am not using data roaming. But the speed difference is bummer, i.e GSM only gives me GPRS slow-ish speed, and not fast speeds that 3G gives you, if you are in a 3G area that is.
I have now found an easier way to switch bands, well at least between CDMA preferred and GSM only mode's, and you don't have to switch off your N1 or even put it into flight mode anymore.
1-Swap your band to GSM only mode via phone keypad.
2-When you need 3G speed if available just go to settings/wireless & network settings/mobile network settings, and untick box to use only 2G networks. This re activates the CDMA preffered mode.
3-When you want to go back to GSM only mode, re tick 2G box as detailed in 2 above.
If you use GSM, and by extension GPRS, most if not all of your calls will go to voicemail. 2G only means your phone can do either voice OR data at a particular time - eg If you're browsing or reading messages or syncing you wont get calls. Conversely if you're talking on the phone you can't browse the web. This is why 3g is so much better - you can do both simultaneously.
You may already be aware of this but I thought I'd mention it just in case you weren't.

actually when android receives or makes a call on EDGE / GPRS it automatically turns off data to allow the call to get through.
This is a must solution if you are on AT&T, with the phone only being gsm capable for me it has increased my battery life by I say 20-30% and going into settings also and switching to only use 2g networks works amazing.
I wonder if there will ever be an AT&T nexus AT&T thats what all my family use..

AT&T doesn't support this (or didn't a year ago when I last looked into it) for incoming calls, so be careful if you're using AT&T (of course, if you're on AT&T there's no other option).
T-Mobile supports this, so it'll work fine.

thanks alot for this code it helped
I dont know why everyone is treating this GSM vs 3G battery life stuff as if its something new..
Those who remember, the iPhone 3G suffered from the very same issue...
wooo hooo!
Poll in..
Finished testing..
GSM only mode is a definate winner as far as battery life goes, but the down side side is the slow data speed side, and the fact that you can't recieve calls when say surfing, or when data is being downloaded in back ground, it just goes to voice mail... Try it.. change to GSM mode, phone yourself via a land line while surfing etc and see your calls go to voice mail.
The easy switching via the 2G mode does help, and you can swap as and when required, but as alot of my current N1 apps connect to the web for updates etc (beautiful widgets for weather updates, e-mail checking etc) I will stick to CDMA only mode for now, and just use GSM mode when I go on me hols abroad when I don't use data at all.

Receiving calls during 2D data transfer is a feature that needs to be supported by your mobile network. Your mobile operator probably needs to implement a Gs interface and change the Network Operation Mode. That way your phone can be paged during 2G data transfer and you'll be able to receive the call.
Which ones should we be using for the Tbolt?
So far from what i noticed...
LTE Only (when iuse this i dont get phone calls or cant make calls)
Global+LTE (seems to be the 4g Only mode to me? i canmake calls)
GSM/WCDMA/LTE (not for us? )
CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto (This is for full 1x,3g,4g)
Global (????)
CDMA w/o EvDO- (Guessing just plain 1x?)
CDMA/EvDo Auto (3g/2g? )
i assume we dont use the ones below:
GSM/WCDMA Only
GSM Only
GSM/WCDMA Preffered
I did a quick search but didnt find a answer..
Still Googl'in....
You want to use CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto
I find that i have to set it to CDMA / EvDO and wait for a 1x or 3g connection then switch to the CDMA+LTE?EvDO mode to actually get 4g.
I was hoping i can set it to 4g only again like with The sense roms to save on battery?
No sir
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
LTE+Global seems to work too.
LTE alone doesnt let me make phone calls.
My question now is.. what is "Global"?
I'd really like to have this answered as well.. I just flashed Cyanogenmod 7.1.1 and if I use LTE only (like I used on Sense roms) I keep getting sms not delivered errors (haven't tried making a call... but from this thread I'm guessing it won't work)
is Global + LTE our "LTE only" on this rom?
I like using LTE only because the 3g/4g auto choices like to chomp my battery.
(And I second the question: What is "Global"?)
If you're wise, you will avoid messing with those and just use the toggle button on the power widget.

I understand where you're coming from, however, the "4g" option on those types of toggles usually means 4g/3g auto, rather than 4g only. The reason we are looking for the answer for this is we want the 4g only option that will still get voice reception. I like to use the 4g only option to conserve battery (and it makes a huge difference to me, I'm at work for 10.5+ hours a day, and if I have it on 4g/3g auto, it dies pretty quickly. If I have it on 4g only, I can go home with up to 60% of my battery left!)

If you do "4g only" it's still going to fall back to 1x if LTE is not available. I don't quite see the advantage of it really.
Settings to Try
Cyanogen is built for multiple phones so a lot of these options apply to GSM phones not our CDMA phone, our phones are at their base a CDMA phone with an LTE chip added on for only data access.
so you don't use options that don't reference CDMA.
Cynogenmod doesn't have a CDMA/LTE only mode.
Don't Use
LTE Only - don't use this it turns off the cdma radios, ie no phone calls or texts
GSM/WCDMA/LTE - not for us, this is for GSM or World phones not ours
Global+LTE - (This is for full 1x,3g,4g), but I wouldn't use it, this for for verizon world phones that have CDMA and GSM radios, my guess is that a lot of unnecessary GSM code is running with this option
Global - this for for verizon world phones that have CDMA and GSM radios, my guess is that a lot of unnecessary GSM code is running with this option
Valid options
CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto (This is for full 1x,3g,4g) - this is what the vast majority should use most of the time.
CDMA w/o EvDO- (Guessing just plain 1x?) yes it's just plain 1x, if you really need to save battery life for calls this will save it, but your data will be basically unusable.
CDMA/EvDo Auto - If your in a 3G only area for a long time this can save you some battery life, because it won't constantly be looking for a lte signal that isn't their.
Anyone who has LTE care to compare?
Some say that the integrated LTE modem means that LTE won't drain your battery any more than 3G will. I highly, highly doubt it (just my guess).
Thanks
im not sure how clearly i can explain this so bare with me here and tell me if you have no idea what im talking about.
the 3g (cdma) and 4g (lte) radios are both built into the processor so right off the bat they use less power than usual but since there is no lte anywhere yet, no one can accurately say just how much it will use but from what i have been reading, people have been ball parking it and saying that it shouldn't use any more battery than the 3g. their reasoning behind this is the fact that the setting for 3g is tied to the lte so if you turn on the 3g radio your essentially turning on both at the same time and lte will connect and take over the 3g and switch to the lte network whenever possible. now you can set it to only use 3g when you turn on the 3g radio but then there is no other way to toggle lte. since i got my phone i have had it so that it turns them both on at the same time and since i have seen no severe drain i would have to say that if it was infact using the lte network that it wouldn't use anymore than the 3g would at any other time (if i had to guess)
to help explain what i am talking about with the settings, here is a few pics that should make it clearer.

That would be awesome. My Samsung Epic sucked the battery dry when 4G was turned on, so I never used it.
The goal with Sprint is to REPLACE 3G with 4G, and not just have it as a secondary like Wimax, or Verizon LTE is now. They are tuning is so much in battery efficiency so that it drains no more, if not less than 3G, since LTE can burst a dl quickly then go back into idle mode much more than 3G, when in use it should take less battery in theory.

I understand the theory better now, but in practice, it seems that the AT&T version of the One X does drain more battery? Although you can not turn off LTE so I'm not sure how people are comparing it to HSPA+.

I'm thinking the same way you are,no LTE here yet of course, but I do have it set to 3g,LTE mode not 3g only and have been getting excellent battery life.I'm assuming it must at least occasionally check for LTE coverage.
Of course, no actual LTE yet. But I have run full days with LTE on and off and have noticed little or no difference in battery life. Maybe a little better data speed even on 3g, but not enough in my area to prove it with speedtest.
I believe what it is is the Radio no matter what looks for a signal from CDMA or LTE either way BUT I believe the options only opts as to what type of signal is allowed to be USED by the radio as the primary signal technology. So basically either way it searches for both since they are both integrated into one on the processor but accepts the best one available according to the settings in OS(Best As In LTE if available and CDMA if not, not Best as in terms of signal strength).

Your defiance astounds and impresses me.
Believe that both 3G and LTE run on the 1900 radio, where the WIMAX used a 2500 separate radio that killed the WIMAX battery life. Plus the LTE phone battery life with the larger battery and ICS (and less HTC crapware polling the network all the time) has lasted all day with moderate use and power left to spare.
Was disappointed that there wasn't an easy switch to turn off the LTE like in WIMAX phones but then if both 3g and LTE are truly tied together that it would be impossible to turn off.
As the title suggests, my maxx gets hot on continuous usage of 3G data. Unlike a lot of people, i dont keep my 3G on all the time in order to save battery, use it only when i want browse and stuff, for whatsapp-like uses 2g data suffices. Moreover, here in India 3G networks coverage is not 100%, so in areas with poor 3G coverage battery drain happens due to network search. However, whenever, i use my phone to browse continuously on 3G, my phone seems to get pretty hot. Initially, i thought that maybe it was because of the ****ty stock OS but after changing to a few custom ROMs i noticed that the issue persists. Do all your respective phones get hot on 3G as well??? If yes what do you do? if no then what the hell is wrong with mine
Would you use a 3G only option if it was available on the G3?
I spoke to a Verizon Regional Exec today about the G3 and other Verizon phones that no longer have the option to run on CDMA only. The rep has an iPhone and regularly sets it to 3G only, especially when he let's his kids use the phone. He could not give me a reason why the G3 and other phones no longer has the ability to go to 3G only. He said he would look into this and see if it could be delivered in a future update.
Honestly I rather not have data at all then be stuck on 3G, just my opinion
I would like that option. There are areas where I play Ingress, for example, where the 3g Verizon signal is strong and uncluttered so its a much better option than LTE, which is either weak and eats battery trying over and over to reconnect, or is good but WAY oversold so there is no way to get good speeds on my unlimited data plan, much of the time.
One of the tricks we used to use on the VGNexus phones was select 3g only and save much battery life. 3g can sometimes be faster than 4g and it saves power by not running the rg radio.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
I can do this using com.lge.hiddenmenu. it has an intent that if launched will allow you to pick your desired frequency/bandmode. it includes lte only, cdma only, evdo only, cdma/evdo, and lte/cdmA/evdo as well as global.
i often have poor band 13 lte coverage and so it saves a lot of battery. sometimes it is nice to block 1x to improve speeds and force 3g if the signal is producing more speed then 1x. just my 2 cents,,,and if you get creative you can create a shell script to "su" then run the intent and then exit. place a shortcut on the homescreen and profit.
im reflashing my softbrick now or i would put the exact intent needed, maybe tomorrow if i remember but its network selection, network mode, something like that and way towards the bottom (last third) of the intents i viewed within hiddenmenu, apk
Please conform that the coma, option is available on works on the vs985

The GNex was one of the last phones to be affected by that. Since Qualcomm took over Android, their integrated LTE radios use no more power than 3G radios.

Basically. I think a full 3G signal is a little faster a very weak LTE signal, but at this point anywhere there's full 3G there's LTE.
Just download a massive amount of data and the carriers will throttle you down to 3G or lower, with occasional 4G use. As for some people saying that 3G is never faster, it depends on the carrier. Verizon throttles all 3G usage in an effort to convince 3G users to upgrade to 4G.
