Hi,
My S3 is acting up. The first 24 hours it was okay, but out of the sudden it has developed a habit of not playing SMS and ringtones all the way trough, it plays only the first ½ second.
Tried selecting other SMS and ringtones, with no change. Restarted / powercycled the phone. Check that no other apps are running (taskmanager)
What might be wrong?
Getting the same problem as you my friend
I believe others are having the same trouble as us. . . .
One solution was to make the vibration last longer as it might be the problem.
I made a new vibration pattern but this only happens with a call.
Hopefully someone will find a solution soon . . . It doesn't always happen which is more worrying.
Yea, this is exactly the same issue. I don't use vibration with sound enabled though, but it seems different how long the phone plays the tones. If i select the "KNOCK" sms tone, it might knock 1, 2 or 3 times - randomly.
Got the same problem defo seems like a bug I'm sure Samsung will be releasing bug fixes soon

Just reset my phone. SMS and ringtones seems to be working fine again - for now... I'd hate to do this every 24 hours.
BUMP. My SGS3 just started doing this earlier. Has anyone found a better solution than resetting the damn phone?
tried above suggestion of making a new vibration pattern and it seems to be working. will update thread to confirm if fix is permanent.
update: only a few hours after the supposed fix, it's acting up again. sigh.
Mine was doing the same. Found a solution i think... copy the desired tone eg ur .mp3 into all folders such as ringtones, media > audio > notifications, notifications folders. It must read from one of these folders but not sure which one so i copied it into all n tested a few times by getting some1 to sms me and it worked. Hope this helps out. Don't know why it started doing this all of a sudden though
Ok that wasn't it...but now found another thing. If u have the option in msg settings 'delete old msgs' n u have reached your limit, when you have received a msg from that person which the limit he been exceeded, the tone won't play or it will only play for one sec like mine. 2 options to fix this: 1) untick that option or put a higher number in woohoo

Hi! Sometimes, when I get a call, first my trackball starts to flash some times and VERY LATE (after about three flashes), my HTC Hero starts to ring.
I once had a program, which read out loud the name of the caller. I removed it and after that time, the ring came very fast for a while but now the problem starts again and I do not have this program installed. What can I do to solve this problem?
Just that you know, I have root and can see every file in my mobile, if there is a special logfile or something... But before I analyze my problem in the files with root, I ask you if there maybe is a very easy solution. How for example can I find out very easily, what my mobile does, while I recive a call? And if you want to know, I have about 200 Apps installed.
Thank you for your help!!
Martin
I have this issue but its mostly when i'm using a memory heavy app or loads of things running in the background. i now use task killer to kill all of the unnecessary programs that are running in the background & for the most part it works tip top. anybody else finding this too?
Yep, I have this - it's incredibly annoying. It's a phone after all and it seems to ignore that fact. I don't have many apps installed and don't tend to have much running in the background either.
Dave
When I first had this problem I got approximately 5 seconds of ringtone to answer (due to the lag in ringtone starting). Although it in no way fixes the problem, you can aid the situation by extending the delay before your answerphone kicks in by phoning your network.
same for me here, unfortunately this is also when not having ANY application running in background (just after phone startup).. takes at least lets say 4-5 secs until da mp3 is played, thats really sucking
Try not using mp3 as ringtone. Use the original HTC ones. The ringtone delay will decrease considerably
I am sorry but that's not a proper solution, has anyone reported that to HTC ?

I do use the originals - it doesn't help
what bout converting my mp3 filez to wav format?
OF COURSE i mean just converting da ringtone mp3 ;-)
I am using the MoDaCo leaked ROM (HTC Generic 2.73.405.5) and the response to incoming calls is much quicker, with the ringing starting shortly after the first flash of the trackball so I guess that you will get an improvement once HTC release the update and you install it.
J
I'm also using the Modaco 2.2 ROM and I've just tried calling my phone from a landline. I heard 4 rings in the landline receiver before my phone did anything with the trackball or the ringtone. However, less than a second after the track ball started flashing my MP3 ringtone started playing. 4 rings is quite a long time, at least 5-6 seconds, surely that can't be normal, can it?
That's not good no.
How about an experiment ... reboot your phone, give it a minute after booting to finish its initialisation stuff then try ringing again. Better or the same?
<apologies for double post>
Apparently this has been resolved on the forthcoming Donut release.
Cyanogen reports this as now working correctly in the new builds he is making on the G1 and Magic using some of the newer Donut code.
Has anyone been having an issue with there ringtones/notifications/alarm sound settings changing?

I have had similar problems and for me it was because the ring tones i was using were on the sdcard and if I got a cal or text while using the sdcard in disk mode it would go to the default ringtone I solved this by copy the ringtone, alarms and notifications that I use to the phone
mines doing it without using the SDCARD as a disk but that makes some sense, I guess ill put them on the internal memory...
stupid problem to have it seems though? ha
I have same problem, my rings was changed sometimes itself. I have all rings on SDCARD, because I have STOCK rom, so I can't write on internal storage. Rings was changed especialy after reboot, but sometimes it was changed during running device. I tried to restore device to factory setting and load all my apps back, and problem is still there. Any advise? Sorry about my english
That's weird, my buddy at work and I have been having the same problem only recently. Maybe the last two weeks. I'm rooted but haven't changed anything for close to a month. My buddy isn't rooted and he has only updated the visual voicemail app.
Comcastrated
Random ringtones stink at work
My wife has stock stock stock. She has this issue.
I have rooted stock. I have this issue.
We both use Go Launcher. All sounds are on the SDcard but neither of us goes into drive mode much at all, if ever.
We have many audio files on our phones. Maybe the system is running into a max limit of files?
Also, sounds change on Go SMS, gmail, and G+, as well as phone defaults.
I was in a meeting at work and it switched randomly to the iphone default ring (didn't even remember I had it on there). I let it ring because couldn't be me...I don't have an iphone! Yeah, it was me. I was the jerk with the ringing phone.
This has happened only within the past month or so. We have had our E3ds for a year or so.
I will never again buy anything with Sense or without very solid, and very open kernels. This phone screws up really simple things. Multitouch stops working sometimes, the phone reboots at random sometimes, and now the ringer switches at random? Man, a Nexus sounds nice right now.
Hi Everyone,
I have switched over to the Galaxy S2 a little over a month ago. I moved from a Blackberry because of its own issues and having to reboot the phone etc.. but that is neither here nor there...
Before i updated the phone with ICS my Sms and Email notification sounds would work, all the time from what I remember. But now the phone sometimes plays the notification sounds and sometimes it doesnt. All my sounds are turned up full.
I am waiting on a loaner phone from my provider but until then I was hoping to fix it myself.
So today I did a factory reset and the phone did its thing. The notification sounds were working for the most part of the day and now I have a recieved a few texts and emails and the notification sounds didnt sound.
I have searched this problem and really have came up with nothing on this issue.
A few things i did notice though, after i did a factory reset on the phone that when it completed it still had the ICS op on the phone, shouldnt the factory reset have "re-formated" the phone and brought it down to gingerbread?
I apologize if this is lengthy but it is better to tell the issues and what I have done to try and rectify the issues incase some of the things that I have done is what would be suggested.
Thanks for any suggestions and help
Ok i figured out the problem... in the developer options i had selected kill processes after use. When i unchecked it the sound notifications for sms worked properly again.
Problem solved.

Guys I have an issue that I don't believe is rom related but I'm not sure (I'm on the collective's cp3) or it might be be a random act of insanity from my phone.
My phone has started changing the default ringtone and notification sound on its own 1-2 times a day randomly. This just started about 4 days ago and I've been on cp3 since the 2nd (this leads me to believe it's the phone not the Rom). It always picks the same sound for each. I have tried a couple different methods for my own tones. I have loaded my tones into the system / media folder and I have also used tone picker, but the phone reacts the same either way. I did a full wipe re-flash to see if that would fix it which did not.
Edit:
The phone always chooses scarabaeus for the ringer, usually after messing with the volume levels.
Has anyone experienced this issue and / or have any suggestions.
Thanks
2nd edit: just wanted to post in case someone else experienced this..... I think the issue is the app volume ace, when changing profiles it reset the ringer, but messing with the volume levels through settings had no effect on ringer. I uninstalled and hopefully this will fix it.

I Know its been along time but I am having this same exact problem with my Galaxy S5. Did you ever get it solved by uninstalling Volume Ace? I use the Volume Ace as well so I think its the culprit as well. Let me know couse I love the app and don't want to uninstall if its not the problem.
In my case it was definitely the app. I've never gone back to it due to the issues I had.
Hey all,
A few days ago, I noticed my phone was only vibrating during incoming calls. I checked the Ringtone section in the sound settings and found that the selected "Tone" was "Silent."
I've tried changing the ringtone to various different sounds, but it continues to revert back to silent. The ringer, itself, ISN'T on silent. It's just the ringtone that seems to get changed somehow.
Anyone else encounter this issue and know how to get it resolved?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Are you trying to set it to one of the built-in ringtones, or a custom one you added? If it's a custom one, is it on the SD card? I've had problems in the past with phones "losing" ringtones that were installed on the SD card, rather than internal memory.

I thought you might be on to something there, so I made sure that all of my ringtones and notifications were copied to internal storage and deleted all sounds from my SD card.
I rebooted, setup my sounds again, and had my wife call me a few times over a period of about 2 hours. Rang every time.
Then, just now, I noticed I had 3 missed calls from clients. NOT good. Checked the ringtone settings and it was back to "Silent" again! Infuriating.
It's not the location of the file. And, now that I think about it, if it HAD been the issue, I would've been experiencing loss of notification tones in all of my other apps too.
This problem has seemingly arisen out of nowhere. The ringer worked perfectly fine during the first few weeks I've had the S9+. It just started doing this to me a couple of days ago. I'd really rather not go through the annoyance of a hard reset...
Damn it, this is getting REALLY annoying
HaaaaLP MEEEEEH!
I'm having the same issue on my Samsung Note 8. Began happening after the device received the Android 8.0 update. I've tried everything and it seems to happen completely randomly. HELP!
Mine is working fine. I have mine on the internal storage in the Ringtones folder /0/Ringtones/ it's an mp3 less than 2MB in size. Not that I know any of that makes any difference.

I hated doing it, but I just performed a factory reset. Been setting up my phone again for hours and I'm not yet done.
So far, it's ringing, but I'm going to be really disappointed if it reverts to silent again. I'll keep you posted.

Tried that too. It worked for a while then randomly went to silent again. It will stay on the ringtone I set for sometimes as long as a day, but eventually it reverts to silent.

So far so good. I've had 7 incoming calls and the ringtone I've selected has stayed in place. For me, before the reset, it would revert to "Silent" after the 2nd call. Fingers crossed.
Same exact thing is happening to me on my HTC U11.
It started happening right away after a full wipe and install of Bad Boyz ROM (Android 8.0). No one else in that ROM thread seems affected.
I have tried just picking a built in ring tone too, and that will also revert. Sometimes it happens within a few minutes, sometimes it takes hours.

That is exactly what happens to me. Custom ringtones make no difference. I've assigned rintones to all my important contacts and those ring through no matter if on silent mode or not. Like you, sometimes it stays put for hours and other times it changes back after a few minutes. Rebooting seems to help it last longer, but I find myself checking my phone all the time to be sure it hasn't gone to silent ringtone. Frustrating!

I don't believe anyone is *blaming* Samsung although the thread did begin in a Samsung forum. We're just trying to find out why our phones are behaving badly and hoping to find a way to fix a really frustrating problem. Do you have a suggestion on where we might look?
Well, I think it's safe to say that the hard reset did the trick. Ringtone is sticking now. Hooray.

Glad to hear this seems to be working, but not glad that the answer is factory reset. I really, really don't want to go through that. I think I'll suffer along a bit longer and see if someone comes up with a work around or perhaps an app that can lock the ringtone. One can hope.

Yeah, it was a bit of a pain in the a$$, but worth it. Reset definitely did the trick.
I have the same problem on my S9+ since the last update. the basic sound settings revert to Silent as do custom settings. Has anyone contacted Samsung to dee what their excuse is?
Hi Folks, I've been having the same issue since 3 weeks ago. Called Samsung and was told to delete my customized settings. That DID NOT WORK. Finally a Fix. I wipe my cache partition and it worked.
Turn off your phone. Turn it on while holding Power, Bixby, and Vol. Up buttons until you get the menu. Use volume down to get to Wipe Cache Partition (NOT wipe Personal data/factory reset.) Press PWR to accept.
This does not erase anything and it's worked problem free for about a week. I read in other forums that changing the SIM has fixed this issue, but changing your SIM will clear the Cache as well.
Hope this works for you.
The solution is to quickly remove the old ringtone and replace the new ringtone for the phone
