On screen time with web browsing. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I'd like to know how much "on screen" time do you get with web browsing and only web browsing from 100% to 0% I know the HTC one X can't go over 3 hours stock and tweaked it's hard to hit 4-5 hours. What about the Galaxy S3? I want the best phone on the market with good multitasking, good web browsing and good battery life. I'm talking about the international edition, since I don't have LTE in my area and anyway I'm data limited I don't see the point of getting the US version. Thanks!

I don't know about just browsing but playing nova, browsing and doing some other stuff, but I got a screen on time of 4 hours and 50 mins!

Yesterday I hit 6 hours after near continous use of the web browser, was a little bit of gaming but the browser was the majority.
http://pic.twitter.com/XvA1u4Ai

Last time I bothered to check was well over 6 hours. Can't remember exactly.
I do run app "custom autobrightness" and config for lower brightness settings under normal and low light conditions. This is the biggest saver.
No other mods or tweaks installed that really affect the battery life.
GPS, wifi on, wcdma only, exchange and push emails etc etc

6 hours with 15% left on wifi. I get 1gb free cellular internet so to preserve it all of my time is on wifi.

You need to be clearer in your question next time so Users can reply without wasting their time.
If you world like to test trial and error, You can download and flash various modems that may give better signal quality/stability/speed etc
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300 download link "M"
Or extract from full firmware here:
http://www.samfirmware.com/
As I said previously, the biggest battery killer is by far the screen.
Thanks, You're welcome for the feedback/help

How many here have their phone using 3g constantly, and what kind of battery life?

I bought my phone cash, thinking that if I did I wouldn't have to get the 25 dollar per month internet, but the guy who I was dealing with on the phone trying to get the basic internet working was talking smack about "Why would someone NOT want 3g on their smartphone?!"
So I ask you guys, do you leave 3g on constantly, why or why not, and if you do what kind of battery life do you get? The 10 dollar internet never worked for me, and I rarely use 3g because of battery drain, just for tethering or big files, though I seem to have wifi around half the time anyways. EDIT: Also, what are you using, stock 2.1, 2.2, or a custom rom, and if a rom which one?
Personally I think the edge service is fast enough that I haven't really cared too much, I just wouldn't mind drawing on some other opinions and thoughts. Maybe I am one of the few smartphone owners who doesn't constantly play with my phone, but if I did I would want the battery to last long enough to play with it..
Edit:
Oh, and in advance, I rarely post here so I don't know if questions like this provoke flame wars or end up through the butterfly effect making small children in india cry themselves to sleep at night.. either way, no flaming please, just curious, thought it may be interesting, and thought it would be a fun thread
I use 3g 100% of the time, battery rocks. Usually 2 days to a charge, 1 if HEAVY use. Been over a day of good use, on 3g, and still at 33.
EDGE is probly fast enough but I get antsy when I have to wait for anything so that's why I use 3g.

I have never once turned my 3g off. I average 1 day 6 hours of battery with moderate use, and have had nearly two days a few times.
Sent from my <tw> powered vibrant.
I always have my 3g on unless i'm some where where i have no signal. It's one of the key feature of the phone why turn it off?
I get any where from 15 to 25 hours depending on how heavily i use my phone.
Alot of the Vibrant community who have rooted devices and have settled into what will and wont kill your battery average between 15 hours to a full day plus. I myself see with 3g on about 15-17 hours.
Sexy Vibrant featuring Nero V3 w/Voodoo, and FFC installed
3G majority of the time (reception is what changes it to Edge) I get 12-14h battery life with "average" use (corp email set to pull every 30min reading emails ect)
Honestly, the only time I find that the network is draining the battery is when it is constantly trying to switch from "3G" to "Edge" or "Wifi" and back in bad coverage areas. If it's a reliable connection then it shouldn't really tax battery usage when idle.
About 16 hours with about 2-3 hour screen on time.. Several emails syncing plus facebook and twitter.. 100% hpsa coverage

I'm always on edge when normal usage. I really have a bad 3g reception at my place plus my vibrant have a hardware defect just like the iphone 4.

I have noticed that also, alot of my job relies on me moving through very dense facilities and around the county. I lose a significant amount (7-10% an hour driving) where at home it sits 3-6% an hour drain.
I do not have a data plan like OP.
I have Wi-Fi in 80% of the places and time my phone is on. I keep the wi-fi on auto-connect and on all the time. Moderate to heavy usage-12-18 hours battery life.
Hmm, interesting replies and statistics so far, when I was in Daytona I think that I had significant drain because the 3g coverage was spotty at best, but I haven't tried keeping it on since I moved to jacksonville, where the coverage should be much better.
Question I wish I had asked in the original post, are you stock, if so 2.1 or 2.2, or do you use a rom, and if so which one? The guys claiming over 24 hours versus people getting 17.. quite a discrepancy, and I will bet this has something to do with it(besides just amount of use).
I am using 2.2 bionix V rom, and I get 18+ hours of use out of it on my heavier use days, though I think some corrupt files on my phone have gotten my mediaserver system process using tons of processor, killing my battery quicker. I am going to go ahead and keep it on 3g for a few days, and see what kind of difference it makes. Thanks for the feedback.
Tmobile's 3g coverage in jacksonville is pretty good.Heck I get almost 4g speeds here

[Q]*UPDATE 17.06.2011* Battery (Its not another complain thread)!

I know there are a lot of threads already but bare with me....
A lot of users have been having issues with battery (me inlcuded). These are the following things I have personally tried:
Screen Filter
Freezing Apps in Titanium
Green Power (though I had issues with it not enabling data when screen on)
I have tried VillianRom the CF-Kernel and currently I am on stock K7 and the stock Kernel (rooted using insecure kernel then flashed stock again)(figured that might help since Samsung wouldn't actually sell a phone without testing the battery).
I am not a gamer nor have I been abusing my phone. Today scenario:
(3G/HSPDA always switched on or wifi when available)
Removed phone from charge at 1400 Hours.
Wifi was on till I left home at around 1530 hours during the process I must have barely checked a few messages on Whatsapp and made one phone call. Since then I have been out met a few friends showed off the phone. When I say showed off the phone all I did was this:
Showed the S2 playing a video
Played a song from google music (streaming over 3G)
Used whatsapp for about 10 minutes
Spoke on the phone for a total of 30 minutes
Got back home around 2200 hours and the phone was screaming for attention which I believe on stock is around 15%.
As you can see from above I have hardly used the phone. Now my query is for those users who are not having battery issues. We have had a lot of threads complaining about issues can we just have a brief post from you guys who are having fantastic battery?
Something like:
Firmware
Rom
Kernel
Root Status
Applications Installed/Frozen
Other Steps?
How much juice have you gotten out of it
I think all of this would greatly help. Coz clearly some of us are having problems and some aren't so could we just share the knowledge?
Sorry for my rambling but I wanted to explain all of it as clearly as I could. Instead of starting another thread as to WHAT CAN I DO!?
Cheers.

[UPDATE]
I read this in one of the countless threads regarding battery life and android OS eating away battery. Still in the testing phase but it seems this might be a genuine solution as well :
Format your SDCARD. I know sounds stupid but like I mentioned earlier I am still testing this out. Most of us if not all have shifted from our old android to the Galaxy S II. The probability that this might have been without a format to save pictures or some sort of data is most likely. Once again this *might* help. The title hence states update and not *FIX*.

after all this mods and stuff i barely got 21h from it with a very very light usage .. now on standby my phone dropped from 100% to 90% in almost 4 hours of nothing
hope this problem get solved with 2.3.4 update

Firmware & Rom: I don't know the difference between firmware and rom, so I'll put this: Baseband - I9100BUKE1
Kernel: OEM 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKE1-CL182896
Root Status: No
Applications Installed/Frozen: None
Other Steps? : Wifi on most of the day, 3G off unless necessary. GPS off Screen brightness: auto
How much juice have you gotten out of it: 4 hours of screen on time, or 24 hours of light use. Usually 16 hours of 3.5-4 hours of screen time.
I hope this helps. Ah not to mention, I have had this phone for 5 days now, and I haven't had ANY Samsung apps show up.
Here is an image of my list of services, but I must say, I unplugged it last night at 10 PM, and left it mostly alone until this morning. That's why my screen usage is so low. In other threads i've posted a lot higher screen on time . But it's just to show you that on KE1 there is no Samsung services going rogue.
One step forward two steps back while charging!
I had the bizarre issue last night where my S2 was losing power while it was charging. Only app running was Words with Friends (checked cpu usage and seemed ok) and I had Screen Filter running at 60%
Phone was near dead by 9pm even though I had topped it up during 2x 30min drives. Was playing Words against 4 family members (all on their iPhones) and I had to give up trying to play while huddled on the floor by the socket as it slowly dropped percent by percent lower.
Not Happy!
KE7 btw
I had a ****ty battery life too but then after reading some tips how to improve it, I froze wifi sharing in Titanium Backup and disabled Google Latitude (not sure which one did the trick but if I had to choose, I guess Latitude was the issue since Maps was always showing up in Battery usage) and now my battery life is perfect. Before my phone would die after like 8 hours and now 24 hours is no problem . I hope the new firmware will fix Latitude but until then, battery life > Latitude. I'm on VillainRom 1.1 and CF-Root 3.7 btw.
ActiveSync
I had an activesync account which really chewed on my battery, had only about 12 hours battery life. After removing the activesync account it lasts at least 40 hours!
i have mobile internet on 24/7, everything syncs every hour, if i dont touch my phone all day, it drops from 100% to 90% from 8am to 4pm....I use my phone for music most of the day for music, txting ect, easily has over 50% by end of the day...cant understand why so many people have problems!

Battery is always the problem and it will hinder the development of smartphone or other PDAs. Maybe we should get nuclear battery
Always turn 'mobile data' off when you are not using your phone. I travel a lot with work and can tell a huge difference in battery life depending on where I am. If you leave 'mobile data' on where 3G service is bad, your battery will drain fast.
Firmware - Default KE2
Baseband - I9100XXKDJ
Kernel - 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606, [email protected] #2
Other - 3G connection, no 3G packet data, no WiFi, no GPS, looking at the time from time to time, screen brightness either small or auto
I have none of the problems mentioned by others (like display banding, tint, unstable WiFi, the pink camera spot is small), if this makes a difference.
(By the way, the number within the battery compartment says i9100H)
I get about 11% battery discharge per 24 hours

Whichever way you swing it, Android battery life ain't that great... i'm coming from a Nokia phone which had 7-10 days per charge.
S2 is my first Android phone it's stock unrooted, Optus Australia version. With 100% wifi on, I get 9 1/2hrs out of box, 19-20hrs with Juice Defender free and 52hrs with XP8000

Haven't flashed it yet as phone is only 10 days old, so giving it sometime and probably wait for 2.3.4 to come out. I know KE7 is meant to give me better battery life, so may do the update or wait for 2.3.4.
My advice just get an external battery pack. My Energizer XP8000 will give me 2-5hrs extra S2 battery run time per 1hr on the charge (basically every 1hr 25-30% charged). So if you're away from home or at work, plug in XP8000 for 1hr and give the S2 a 2-5hr top up charge. But probably quicker to charge on S2 AC adaptor as USB = ~450mah and AC = ~650mah. So on AC every 1hr on charge = 40% top up on S2 battery life.
The added bonus of XP8000 is it has tips for 1000s of devices, so i can use it for my Acer 3810T notebook too which gets 10hrs itself and XP8000 can give it an extra 4 1/2hrs on top.
One thing I notice is I'm getting better battery life after each successive charge, with Juice Defender free started out around 17-19hrs, then 19-20hrs and now 23-26hrs. Been charging off XP800 @450mah for past 4 charges maybe it conditions battery batter than AC @650mah ?

A phone and a PDA (so called smartphone) are two different animals.
I forgot to say that my 3 years old HTC Polaris (with Windows Mobile 6 and a 2.8 inch LCD display) had about 12-14% battery discharge in the same conditions (but the battery was smaller, like 1300 mAh). Just for comparison for those who believe that Android is at fault.

Massive battery drain, caused by switching internet?

Hello everybody,
I am confronted with a nasty problem.
My 2 weeks old s2 suffers under massive battery drain if using the 3g/hsdpa internet. I will explain it with a timeline:
In the morning, phone was fully charged over the night.
I start my day with 100 % in the edge network. I live on countryside, there is not just more :-/
I can listen to music, surf in fb, .... battery does not drop significantly. I think everything is fine.
When I drive over to the next city, where I go to school, 3g/hsdpa is available.
Phone switches permantly between 3g and hsdpa, even if signal is above 3 lines.
Internet is really slow or even just does not work!
Battery starts to drop massively!
As I write this, it's 3:45 pm, my battery is just about 25%.
Today, I only listened to music, played some mini games and bugvillage, tried to surf and checked ebay...
Technical Informations:
Cognition 1.51
Changed modem to kdj, read that it is better than kh3
Ninpo 2.1.3 kernel
Display is on auto setting
TW 4.5 Launcher
Apps running in background(just to receive/send informations, not opened):
Facebook
Whatsapp
Googletalk
Gmail
Bugvillage
Is there a fix for the switching signal, which causes this massive battery drain or do you know where the problem is?
Regards,
crapman

With email and other apps synching all the time, 8 hours battery life is probably quite normal. I can get thru the day till 9pm by emails every hour, no chat but I read a lot. Screen on time typically 3 hours..wifi and 3g on.
I use stock dxkh2 and speedmod t39

Sounds like a modem/radio problem you could try changing and see if it makes a difference.
If your getting weak signal it does drain the battery.
Could also be a rouge app causing wakelock.
Search for betterbatterystats app on the forum this should help you track down if an app is causing problems
EDIT: also if your only getting E at home try changing to 2G only
settings - wireless and network - mobile data.
This is a bug in the modem. Either play around with different modem versions and see if the behavior changes, or use the *#301279#* dial code to enter a hidden menu, and chose to release R99, this will disable H speeds and it will limit you to 3G, and not switch anymore. It may improve battery life.

For a bug, which is caused by Samsung, i have to decrease my internet speed?
I want to have fast internet....?!
Nevertheless, thanks for your replies!
modems are kinda region specific, so what works best may not be very good for you. I've stuck with KG6 but i hear that the KH3 one is pretty good
In betterbatterystats click where it says process and change it to wakelocks, these are the apps keeping your phone from deep sleep when the screen is off. so the ones with alot of time below them are not doing your battery any favours.
If you switch to 2g in bad reception areas it can really help, i know its hassle to keep changing but if your handset is constantly switching from 2G/3G your not getting fast internet anyways
hope this helps!

It's switching between 3G and H/H+ all the time. I have the same problem sometimes, it has nothing to with signal strength it seems.
Try flashing different kernels, may help. Check and control what is constantly synching..
No phone with big screen lasts 24 hours with all sync and push and chat/streaming/browsing, even blackberry.
the battery does take some time to cycle and will give better battery life.

New Radar owner, with questions

Hi All
As I now have a Galaxy 5 wifi media player... I decided to ditch my Wildfire S and go WP7 again.. I love it, the call quality is fantasic and really fast with great interface and apps. Android is better for tablets & Media players.. WP7 are great as a simple phone.
Some questions to get me started though, Im trying to conserve battery, Im on 7.10.8107.79 (mango 7.5)
:
- In my mobile networks.. Im not sure wether to use 3G or Edge and do I need my data connection on all the time.. I do have a contract and a Wifi hub at home, but does 3G use battery over Edge.
- I have alot of contacts on Facebook, but when I logged in Ive got all sorts of rubbish on my lock screen and all over the phone.. how can i stop this without deleting the account.
- I used to own an Omnia 7 about 1 year ago which backed up all my contacts to my Live account, however all my contacts seem to have about 8 windows live profiles for each name, so is there any way of just deleting these dozens of profiles in just 1 go.
- Any other battery saving tips would be great.
Many thanks and its great to be back on simple WP7 again.
Cheers
I have all my networks on including 4G and WiFi all day long. I easily get 30+ hours of battery life. Battery is very good on the Radar and I haven't needed to use and tricks to keep my battery lasting long enough for my usage. You can either link multiple contacts names in the people hub, or go online and clean them up that way. I would say if you have upwards of 8 of the same contact, I would go online on your computer and clean them up, it will auto sync to your radar.

I get around 15 hours of battery life easy, even when im web browsing.
I keep 4g on all day long, doesn't really affect the battery.
The one thing that does drain the battery is watching videos and streams.
Otherwise, this phone is amazing in battery life!

Many Thanks for the help.. Its been 1 year since my omnia, and Ive never used Mango.. Im on Virgin Mobile and after entering the APN for pic messaging and 3G, it now says "H" for HSDPA at all 5 bars. Actually ive been running it now for 28 hours and Im down too 17% and it seems fine.
I did turn off "Ring louder in Pocket" in attentive phone, because I read that, even on their android phoners, this setting transmits every few seconds for movement.
Regarding the Facebook issues, I set my emails and accounts to update manually and turned xbox live always update to off.
What about using the My Location, does that drain battery as well, Im sure its only used for HTC Hub and Maps.. is that right?.
Thanks again for the help.. Im still loving this phone, it seems to handle background tasks much better than android and while the apps are not as numerous as Android.. they seem more interesting.

Batteryife on MeanROM

I need some assistance, I just flashed MeanROM 5.7 this morning and seem to be experiencing the same issue, a draining battery. It's like 8:30am and I unplugged about 6:30am. I'm currently at 77% with very light usage. I've sent maybe 20 text messages and spent maybe 10 minutes in various apps. My on screen time is currently 29 minutes. I have email set to sync every 4 hours, weather syncs every three hours, I created the MeanRom.opt file and set parameters for battery. Is there anything I can do to increase my battery life as I hear about others getting at least a full day out of their battery.

I get 30+ hours with almost 4 hours of screen on try turning off auto sync and whatever else is not neccesary such as GPS and IMHO changing to battery I tried it once and got horrible battery life you can also check Better Battery Stats and see if some rouge programs are running I know GN is a big battery killer also I always heard having wifi on as much as possible was supposed to save battery but.. I had mine on and it kicked the crap out of my battery I saw in BBS that wifi had almost 6000 wakelocks so I turned it off until I needed it then back off when done no more battery problems.
It's not uncommon to have mediocre battery life immediately after flashing a ROM...give it a day or two to settle and it should improve. That's typically been the case for me.

Couple of reboots also helps

Thanks BD, will try turning off the autosync. Is there a way I can disable GN? It's rather slow.
Do u do anything else to get that type of battery life? I heard I shld keep 3g off until I actually nd it. What say u?

Hey Premo, I have been having this problem with previous versions al well. I was told I shld keep 3g off until I use an app or svc which requires internet connectivity. What say u?

I have never used GN but I have seen members post there is a way to turn it off in GN settings and my 3g is always on unless I do hook into wifi for a few minutes, I only use wifi as needed.

Yeah, that would help...wifi uses less battery than 3g too, so use that whenever you can. Just make sure the "Best WiFi Performance" option is disabled in wifi settings (it drains battery pretty aggressively).
You really shouldn't have to disable your data connection to get decent battery life though. Have you let the battery run all the way down? How many hours do you get on a full charge? Do you have the same problem with other roms?

I never turn off my 3g. It seems that if it doesn't need data, that it isn't using the 3g. It's on but in a standby mode.
When I'm at home, it's connected to WiFi. Which will help some.
I do have my auto sync turned off too. If stops pinging for messages all the time.
What is GN?
