Howdy folks, got my Sony S yesterday & have barely put it down since! love its tactile feel & its ease of use! I plan to get a nas drive to gain access to my music/movies etc but the question I have today is about printing.
I have a 7series brother printer which, although is wireless, isnt supported by any of the apps ive found. It recieves the data but just doesnt do anything with it! All the apps ive found (inc the official Brother one) just dont have the correct drivers.
So I was just wondering who has successly paired a wireless printer to their tablet, which is stable. Ive found plenty of apps that seem to do the job, but before buying a new printer (all-in-one) I wanted to make sure I was getting the right one
I use PrinterShare, and it works perfectly. At home, I have a Canon MP620. At work, we have a couple of large HPs and a Bizhub. I have PrinterShare on my phone and tablet, and my colleagues are always amazed when we're heading out the door and realize we forgot something, and I just go to Google Drive and print directly from whatever device I've got out (ually my phone).

Cheers. Do you print docs straight from the tablet/phone... or is it all cloud printing via google drive?

I agree. I also use PrinterShare Mobile Print and I came to appreciate its capabilities so much that I purchased its Premium Key. I have tried several printing apps, some free, some purchased, and I find PrinterShare to be the most versatile, non-intrusive, and user friendly of them all, and it has a comprehensive set of printer drivers. IMHO, you cannot find a better mobile printing app.
No cloud business required. Printer drivers are installed directly to the device. The device then communicates directly with the printer.

It was just my girlfriends bitrhday. I got her this little printer that prints polariod style pictures. It says you can print pics from a phone via infrared. Or pics from a camera with pictbridge. It prints pics from her camera with no problem but what phone has infrared? Is there any way to get pictbridge on my phone?

That would be a very nice feature to have but I don't think this thing does that. What printer do you have? I am trying to use a Fujifilm Pivi MP-300.
Try using your microusb->usb cable and enable usb storage mode on your phone.

No phone I know of has had infrared for YEARS.
These days it's all wifi or Bluetooth.
i know laptops have had IR technology but i havent seen cell phones with that in a long time
OwmyGulay,
Pictbridge is a standard that was created and implemented by both the Digital Camera and Printer consortium. It was enacted as a quick way to get images from a DIGITAL camera off to a PRINTER without having to tether the CAMERA to the COMPUTER first to download data from SD/CF cards and then launching a seperate computer/printer program just to print files.
Imagine taking a PIC and then hitting the PRINT button when you're near the printer, no worries about cables and file copying needed. this was magic back in 2007/2008 before BLUETOOTH took off and Smartphones were all Blackberries (No iphone no Androids yet)
To the best of my knowledge we do NOT have Pictbridge protocols installed on our SGSII so this will not work for us. Instead simply connect via Bluetooth...
Thanks for all the replies guys. My regular printer has bluetooth but this new little photo printer does not. I don't know why. I must have just assumed it did before I bought it. It is pretty weak. My girlfriend is able to print pictures from her Nikon on this printer via usb so she likes it. Thats what she wanted it for. Maybe this thing is just old.
Why is printing a simple word doc so difficult. One should be able to print from polaris, file manager or other file viewing app. It is really frustrating that everything one can do for free on a pc costs a fortune on mobile devices. Don't get me wrong, there are a great deal of free apps that work great.
I was hoping to be able to use this tablet to its potential as a low powered computer yet, software really needs to improve for this to happen.
Anyway, just wanted to know if I am missing some freeware here. I will not buy printershare premium($13) and I can't find something similar for free. I know i could convert the format of the .doc file and use a less adequate program but i should not have to.
Srry I am new to touchscreen device's and I am mad because I have been trying to print one page for hours now. I know these are not replacements for computers but, they have the ability to do more.
Thanks
Try Google cloud print. You unfortunately need some sort of device directly connected to your printer to use it, from my understanding...
http://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/
You can print for free. You just have to search for it. Can't give any more details. Google search will be the key to what you looking for. lol
Well the key is one thing that has left me searching for hours along with trying to find a better way to print. Current key is not on the net and older keys will not update, it tells me I did not purchase it.Cloud print is not really what I was going for but it may be my only choice(pointless because my printer does not have eprint and i might as well be printing from the laptop). I don't know if there is a way around key verification but, i have not been able to find a way as of yet.
have you tried searching your brand of printer and seeing if they have an app?
like hp has an app for printing to their printers. Probably similar things for other brands

edit. Never tried any of these apps myself. Just remember someone else mentioning them

What brand of printer? I have a HP and use the HP app and it works great as long as the printer and Tablet are on the same network. I think it will work with any printer as long as you're on the same network
PrintBot
Might be worth giving PrintBot a go. Looks like it doesn't require "enabled" printers and supports legacy printers.

So does that mean the printer needs to be a WiFi printer?
My printer (HP) is attached with a printer cable to a desktop computer that is on the same network as my laptop and Prime. Can I print from Prime to a this non-WiFi printer, that is cabled to my desktop on the same network?
Suggested programs for Prime?
Same goes for Epson. Their Epson iPrint app works great. They even supply you with an "epsonconnect" email address so you can print outside your network.

Sounds like Google cloud print will work for you - you install some software on your PC and then there are multiple apps you can install on your phone.
Deskjet 3050 j610 does not have eprint. I have tried hp eprint home and biz but it does not let me print. It sees my printer but for some reason can't print to it. BTW I really hate this app it is very evil and annoying.
The whole point of this is to not have to pick up the laptop when I need to print. I hardly use my families laptop and spend most of my time on the tp(takes some getting use to when coming from a desktop as primary computer). I almost have it to where the prime is just as good if not better than my old and busted desktop. It is certainly faster believe it or not(old amd sempron 1.9GHz single with 1gb of ram). Sad I know. Yet, i do miss that 100gb HDD. I plan to get an SD card when I get some spare cash. After that I am building myself an amd/asus/radeon super computer.
Kinda got off topic there.
Using eprint is just not practical in this case. Hooking up the laptop to my printer so I can print from my tp just sounds stupid to me, it would be faster just to print directly from the laptop.
I have tried everything here. If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: tried iprint as well and it can't find my printer
Have you considered this with your printer ?
PrintBot
I tried PrintBot last night.
I have two printers patched into my router. An old LaserJet4 and a HP OfficeJet D Series. I configured Printbot and tried printing the test page to both printers.
The Laserjet4 started printing but it printed wierd characters and spooling sheets of paper so I believe it was sent the wrong printer control characters.
The OfficeJet D Series managed to print the test page successfully.
Didn't have time to print anything else.

I just printed a picture from my TFP using HP ePrint home and biz. I dont understand whats wrong with your setup it should work. If your prime sees the printer it should work. Try going in to the gallery than choose a pic or image than hit the share icon than more than hp and finally print. If that does not work your not registered with HP eprint service in that case register and Try again. HP should send a code through email to you that you put in the app or click a link so is instantly linked to your gmail account. Also I wasnt able to print directly from the app the first time I used it I had to go through the share icon. Good luck hope this helps

$13 is a lot but Printershare works flawlessly for me, even for Printing PDFs. Fortunately I got it as a free paid app of the day from Amazon. I would just pay the money if I needed/wanted to print a lot from my devices. Sometimes it will go on sale for like half price too...maybe wait until then.
Not sure if this is what your looking for but, I recently bought a Canon Pixma wireless printer because I was tired of going to my dessktop pc to print something and wanted to print directly from my laptop and the wife's. Well lo and behold, Canon has an app, that I installed on my Prime and Samsung Droid Charge , that works like a charm !

It is very strange that this works yet nothing else does. The only way it works is if you go through the gallery. I blame the fact that this program is evil. Also the print was very slow and poor quality but I'm not sure what to blame.

i should check Amazon more often.
I refuse to pay so much for printershare and I don't think I would need it that badly. It just really bothers me that there is not a preloaded application for this. I am just stubborn and would not print a quiz off from the laptop because I had already downloaded it to my tp. It would just be a convenience that's all.
Is this something that's still foreign to Google's OS? I don't know where to begin to find how to achieve this.

Look at printer share in the market
+1 to ^
Just setup my PrinterShare (amazon FAOTD a while back) and it works great on the TFP.
Printing on Android is very flaky at this point. there are number of apps that use Google Cloudprint technology but they seem to work sporadically. Sometimes docs will print right away, sometimes hours later, and sometimes not at all. Google needs to get this issue straightened out if they ever expect android to be taken seriously in the business world.
Look on the market for your printers manufacturer. For instance, I use a Brother printer. Well, Brother has an app for printing to the printer over your network and it works pretty Damn well. I think I saw one for HP and canon as well. Printershare used to work very well, but ever since they made everyone repay for the app its really gone down the pipe.
Just look for your manufacturer on the market and you should find it.

Printbot can print pdf on any network printer.
Printer Share has worked flawlessly everywhere I have gone (in fact, it has worked when my laptop was unable to find drivers). So no matter where I am, if there is a printer and there is wifi/network - I can print
As another person mentioned - if you have a printer it might have an app. I happen to have a cloud-ready HP printer
I haven't seen anyone post anything about it yet in this forum, so I just wanted to say that Splashtop Remote Desktop HD is the best remote desktop app I've used on this tablet. It has an amazing amount of features, check the app out here https://market.android.com/details?id=com.splashtop.remote.pad&feature=more_from_developer#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwMiwiY29tLnNwbGFzaHRvcC5yZW1vdGUucGFkIl0.
Looks great, I'm giving it a try. I was using jump desktop but it was super laggy and awful, this looks more up to my standards. Thanks!
The best for me too!
Great app using it here to
Simply the best! Never bring the laptop anymore since I out source all the processing at my home comp while im out. Truly unique to the S since it has host imputs! A must buy!
Splashtop:
Works great, keeps getting better, and it's useful for all kinds of stuff: Vid/aud playback, flashsites/Hulu, etc.
If you are using a keyboard, (the Sony Bluetooth KB works great btw) you have be sure that any encrypted keystroke program that you are running on the host computer is turned off.
For a bit of fun, try using Splashtop with WiFi File Transfer Pro. You can do direct PC file transfers from the Splashtop>WiFI File Transfer GUI to your S1.
Lots of fun things to be done with Splashtop, absolutely a must have.
works great this program. Have only tried the free version. Not really sure if I need this, but it works great. At least as long as I'm on my WiFi.
However, I can't get it to work remote when connected to a 3G connection. Even though I opened up the coresponding ports in my firewall. Oh well. Maybe I just missed some settings somewhere.
Fab app! Cheers for the recommendation. Will be very handy.
Thx, i´ll try it!
I agree , great app. Used everyday.
Worth noting that if your Tablet came with SelectApp (I think they all do), then you can find a Tablet S-optimised version of Splashtop in there. Admittedly, it doesnt actually seem very different, but if you open SelectApp, you can see that they're offering it as a separate version.

I was just reading about this from last week. I haven't used it yet, but it's a free virtualized Windows desktop from what I understand. Meaning it's essentially just like Splashtop in that you will have a Windows environment, however you don't need to provide the endstation you're connecting to like Splashtop- they create a virtual one on their servers. How much you can install on it or how long the sessions persist, etc, I haven't figured out since I haven't used it, but ideally this would give you free access to the Office Suite from anywhere for creating docs...
Anyway, like I said that's my understanding w/out having used it. Off to try it now
EDIT: Anyone getting it to work? I created an account, and when I try to log into the app, I get stuck at a "Connecting" hourglass...

how did you install it on a prime?
same with me, says "Network Test Failed: OnLive was unable to complete an iInternet connection test. This might be caused by your router or firewall blocking certain internet traffic."
Tried this at work/home networks and tethered to my phone. No dice with all options
It's working super fast on my Prime, but I was let down when my keyboard dock didn't work. You have to use a built-in keyboard from their VM. I suppose I should have expected it, but I was looking forward to using a fully-fledged word processor with my Prime's keyboard.
Too bad.
Thought Id try this out, works great on my prime with flash and the browsing is amazing.
Definitely worth the extra and has increased what the prime with its dock can do.
Have to say that this kicks ass for a free service. Wonder how they support it considering I haven't seen any advertising yet.
