GPS options - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I've heard about waze, syrgic, etc. What makes them better than Google maps?

You mean GPS Navigation or Car Navigation, not "GPS". Anyway, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses, try them for yourself.
One big advantage to some is that you can cache the maps and route and not have to go online. Others the maps will cache but routes still need data, yet others all data is basically on the fly.
Some the maps are more up to date than others, some you get more information, such as Waze will let you know about slowdowns, hazards, police, etc, but requires human maintenance to make the maps good. Google Maps tend to be pretty good but still have some errors and I've never seen it behave all that well without data (and without cludgy caching mechanisms).
Again, try, see what's best for yourself, compare the features for yourself.

I use Navigon and it works great in poor reception areas. Have the Canada & US version. Works great in either country. Not as good as Google if you are in an area of good reception though. In areas of poor or no reception Google maps just plain sucks.

Thanks for the replies. I have unlimited data, so I don't worry about that issue. And I can't remember the last time I had reception issues.

I use sygic. Used it for a 4 hr trip with no issues at all. Used it multiple times and to me it almost identical to the last time I had Tom Tom for my last phone.
Sent from my REALLY big phablet.

I use CoPilot Live Premium. Best Navigation app hands down. No waiting for data signal losses or unstable data connection. Couple this with GPS Test+ and you're set to never getting lost ever again. lol.

[Q] How accurate is your GPS?

i made a little test with Endomondo sport tracking application to see how accurate my gps is. I walked the straight street for 0.64 kilometers and this is what it looks like:
http://www.endomondo.com/workouts/ilRz0mnqvJA
I was wondering if that is normal or should it be more accurate? Or can i make it more accurate?
edit: don't mind about the duration, i forgot to turn the app off when i got inside!
My GPS isn't very accurate, but I am in the heart of Hong Kong, so I can't expect it to work well with so much interference. It would detect my exact location in Maps, but it the blue arrow won't lock, and jumps around to as far as two blocks away.
I've tried some gps improvement apps, but they do not work for me.
mine sgs2 does not have very good acuracy. My old htc desire was very acurated compared with sgs2

Wow, sorry but i kinda laugh when i saw the ziggyzag lines. No, the GPS shouldn't be that way, I've used mine several times while driving and it just flows smoothly, like a real GPS device! Once I even had 10 out of 10 satellites locked in a few seconds!
Maybe the GPS in your phone is defective or something, I say exchange your unit for a new one. Hopefully it's still under warranty

You cannot tell that from that log. It depends on the circumstances, e g bad reception due to high buildings can easily cause problems like this.
I suggest jankher does some more tests in others locations.

Interested in this thread.
I've had my SGS2 for a couple of weeks and have been testing the GPS for accuracy. From my experiences, the accuracy is OK when you are using a 'proper' satnav app (e.g. CoPilot) as the system knows to try and keep the arrow in the middle of the road.
However, one of my hobbies is Geocaching which I need an accurate GPS for and here's where I have had real problems. At a known cache location (i.e. standing exactly on top of it), my SGS2 showed 5 sats locked on, 25m accuracy & 32m to the cache !!! My HTC Wildfire (in my other hand) showed 8 sats locked on, 2m accuracy & 1m to cache.
Time to read more threads and see if this can be improved by software or if I'll have to think about keeping the HTC for caching (which would annoy my 11 year old who now has it) or consider selling the SGS2 and getting a HTC Sensation or Motorola Atrix.

GPS on Note

I heard a rumor that there isn't GPS on the note, does anyone who has this phone know this for sure??
That rumor is extremely inaccurate. The Note has probably one of the best GPS setups I've seen on a cell phone. It locks swiftly, even indoors.

awesome thanks for the quick reply
Not only that, but it has TWO GPS receivers, GPS and Glonass.
I used it on a hike yesterday. Drove well into the mountains far out of cell range. I could not believe how absolutely outstanding the gps was. Not only for the drive, which Google Nav took me exactly to the lat\long requested, but along the hike as well to track my distance. Just amazing!
Been using my Vibrant fo r a year or so while cycling. It was notorious for crappy GPS signal even with a plethora of "fixes". So when I started using this I was astounded by the fast lock time and amazing pinpoint accuracy. OP rumor is absurdly inaccurate, probably started by one of those apple fans while standing in line
You should probably slap the source of this rumor swiftly with a good backhand. Seriously...who would start such a rumor? As the others have said, the combination of GPS and GLONASS antennas gives the Note one of the best, if not the best GPS system in a cell phone that is mass produced today.
Coming from a Captivate, which all but seemed like it didin't even have a GPS, this is a breath of fresh air. Saves me from having to take my Garmin on my next trip.

Any phone GPS is better than the crap Samsung built into Captivate/Vibrant/Galaxy S.

I was just using Google Nav and My Tracks. Didn't seem phased at all by being out of cell range and relying solely on the satellites. Seemed that cell phones I had in the past relied quite a bit on cell towers for accurate location, however this one does not from my experience yesterday.

Since the Note includes the GLONASS antenna, you don't need cell service, stock.

GPS by itself doesn't really require cell service (that's why standalone GPS works). Having the cell service helps speed up the initial lock on satellites. Once locked, it doesn't require any cell service.
Google Nav will cache the route data once your setup the destination.
The GPS on the NOTE is by far the best GPS experience I've had with any phone/GPS unit. It literally locks in on your location in seconds!

You mean GPS Navigation? Many apps have offline capability.. I use Locus for general "gps" activities (hiking, geocaching, etc), and there are several offline navigation apps on the market, but I don't use any offhand.

Technically, cell service has very little to do with it, aGPS downloads data every few days, it doesn't poll data constantly. It could as well do it from wifi.
Agreed, cell service has little to do with the GPS position data, but with apps like Google Maps you won't get any map data (although you can turn caching on to get around that problem).
That said, yes, there are some assisted GPS techniques which use wifi and cell phone tower data to get an approximate location. But the real GPS receiver doesn't use that stuff at all.
The Note is actually capable of reaching out to 59 satellites worldwide. In my area, KY, it snags about 20 on average even when under fast acceleration from a dead stop.
Vast improvement over my Cappy.

Cycling apps on Razr

Anyone else had problems with MapMyRide on the Razr? I have problems with it dropping portions of my route. Cell signal and GPS signal are fine everywhere I do training rides. When I get to the end of my ride, I am missing portions of the map. This sucks because MapMyRide worked fine on my other Android phones.
I finally resolved to try some different cycling apps. Tonight I tried out Bike Computer and it met the primary requirement well, it tracked my 26.85 mile after work ride perfectly. But it's kind of a weird app, you have to register on some German website in order to upload your data. That being said it has a lot of options, including offline map data, which is a great feature when you ride in remote areas.
I have a few others to try, including Endomondo, My Tracks, and Strava Cycling. I've looked at the Motoactv, but I don't know if my next phone will be a Motorola or not, so I'm a bit resistant to that one.
Anyone have any other suggestions on cycling or running apps they are using successfully with their Razr?
I use endomondo. Stays solid. You may want to keep wifi and all location services on.
This phone, the maxx, has had the best GPS of any phone I have owned.
I do long rides, 30+ miles as well as inline speed skating and this phone rocks for tracking activities. I also have clear skies on my routes with low buildings(Vegas).

I used endomondo for a while-pretty good. Next was Mytracks-liked it a lot, especially how it puts all your stats up into a spreadsheet. Now I'm using Strava-fun going against all your mates.

My brother had your problem using Strava on a Maxx. Upgrade to ICS fixed it. You may want to try the .215 leak and see if that fixes the problem.
Also, I highly recommend Strava: great app.

I started using Strava as well. It's a sweet cycling app. It's a great way to enhance riding.

How is your GPS?

I have not see much complaining about the GPS, so I assume it's working fine for most. For me it really sucks, however. I am coming from the ThunderBolt (running CM and AOSP mostly), and GPS there was spot on in any weather. I use it mostly to track my speed when I jog and the TB did a good job.
With the same tracking app the DNA (full stock not rooted) is almost useless. The path it tracks zig zags so much due to errors that the speed estimates are way worse than what I can do in my head lol! It is also sensitive to weather, with particularly bad results when it's overcast.
Do you think it is hardware related or have people seen improvement in GPS on different roms or after flashing some GPS patch (that did help the TB). Thanks.

I've never had an issue with gps, regardless of what rom I'm using.

I've only had issues recently. I'm on stock

I had the reverse experience, my thunderbolt was awful with GPS. It took forever and pretty inaccurate. Never had an issue with the DNA.
I would have to agree that the GPS is poor when used in running apps. I've been using Strava for a while and the comparison between my last phone (HTC Rezound) and the DNA is like night and day. The DNA bounces around quite a bit which alters the run length and split times. I run the same route each time, and the length can vary from 2.7 miles - 3.2 miles (2.8 is the actual length).
I looked back even further and there are some older recordings that are not as straight, so maybe it's the app?
For everything else the GPS is awesome. Navigation, Foursquare, and any other location based services work very quickly and accurately.
I have noticed that the GPS drops off right a way if the app losses focus. Example, switching between Google maps and sms, when I go back to maps it had to relocate GPS.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
So it sounds like the issue is with maintaining a consistent lock rather than getting a lock in the first place. Maybe it's a battery saving feature for the phone.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
I been using My Tracks and no GPS problems, it works great.
GPS has always been immediate, continuous, and spot-on for me.

Boom! Thought so... Thanks for reminding me.. Maybe OP should DL this and see what's up...
I have the GPS status app. It appears the GPS locks ok, but then somehow loses lock later. I tried using My Tracks app from Google. It locks fine, but then actually does not track my run! When I checked it in the middle of the run it had a message "waiting for stronger GPS signal." Interestingly, it would lock again while I was looking at it, but lose lock some time after I started running.
I even tried to keep the screen on with a wake lock app - - same story.
Weird. Happy most others are not having this issue.

I've had the original Droid Incredible, the Rezound, the Incredible 4G and now the DNA and the DNA has by far the most accurate GPS of them all. Also by far the best battery life.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 gps test?

Hello everybody from Xda,
I'm looking for a new phone for my mother and I am really interested to know what the GPS is like. If the gps is any good I will join the Xiaomi army.
Why am I so interested in this?
Well my mother her navigation system just died and, I would like to install the tom tom app on her phone, I've got it currently on my oneplus one without internet and it's great. My mom will also have no data plan with her phone so google maps or anything isnt an option for her
So my question to you guys is, does anybody of you have had any ecperience with the gps.
Thanks in advance XDA,
Deameong
I am curious about the same thing. I use GPS without any Internet or even phone signal (normally on airplane mode to save battery). And I would like to know how reliable it is.
Attached a Screenshot, few Seconds (about 30) after switching GPS on. GPS receptions is really good, from my point of view.

Just recieved it now,
Using google map and waze, locking on me very fast,
Looks good and stable with great reception of the GPS...
Can you say how much time in seconds need to lock satellites?
Thank You
Thanks alot for the advice guys,
Going to order it tonight!
I've just come back from holiday and I used GPS extensively with the offline Co-pilot app. It worked almost flawlessly both in the car and when cycling. I can't begin to tell you how much better it is than older MTK eqiluipped phones. Lock times varied from four seconds to nearly a minute. One thing I noticed is that it was much faster to lock in Co-pilot when I was connected to the internet. Accuracy was great, though I never went into a big city with lots of high rise buildings.
GPS, Wifi and network signal 2-3 times better than on my Note 4.
GPS is sick, in my room after 2-3 sec.

Hello,
Runkeeper with someone tried, I hesitate to buy the premium just because of that?
(avec Runkeeper quelqu'un a essayé, j'hésite à acheter le Prime juste à cause de ça?)
I really want to know about the gps as well. I use the gps so much. Now I have the lg g3, I would like to know if this one is around the same as g3.
Thanks
D.
Ill give uadvice gps locking depends onyour connection and area,i use gps in city with locking time vary from 10 -80 sec or more the signal was good but for gps signal its not good so it some time locks slower, this is qqualcomm 400 chipset ,newer version of mediatek might performs better and i have ever try gps with airplane mode one using gps test on aa mountain area and it lock 30 sec or less, the signal came out by it self with no connection so everything depend on your area and your xhipset ,newer chipset performs excellent on gps
I'd like to know more about how the GPS in this phone is faring for you because for me it's an endless horror story. Neither Google Maps nor Endomondo give even acceptable locations and tracking.
And the compass is so bad I wanna puke.
The phone is great in almost every other aspect, but GPS is fairly important for me and I'm starting to regret purchasing this phone. May it be fixed with better ROMs or is it a hardware fault?

I used it yesterday for half an hour in inner city traffic. The phone found the GPS signal in a few seconds with data connection, without it takes a minute or two. Navigation itself was worrisome. Went under a bridge and signal was lost for about 2 minutes. Then Google maps always thought I was going inside buildings or streets next to my actual route. Really weird.
Inside my room 2 - 3 seconds lock, the best gps on any of my past smartphones.

And what is that information good for since the moment you open Google Maps, Runtastic or something along those lines it doesn't have any accuracy and keeps jumping the whole time?
I'm sick of people sharing screenshots of GPS Test or GPS Status like they're proof of anything when what's really important is real life apps behavior.

I don't know what you're on about, but GPS Test uses the same API and sensor as any other app. I'm getting the same 5-7 second fix indoors from GPS Test and HERE Maps. Both don't jump around and show my correct position.

Well we use diagnostic tools to know accurately if something is wrong or not, nothing wrong with that. With GPS Status we can know how many sat signal we got, how strong, what is the margin of error, etc.
And i don't have any problem in real life apps and GPS status confirmed that fact.
If you want positive info or help don't start with a negative.

China ROM GPS problem
But with china stable rom, the map apps is using Baidu, and if your GPS location is not available, the device will report your network location (wifi/3G), which is in simplified chinese to your requesting apps, that sucks, however, I can't deny the hardware GPS here in RN2 is the best I ever used.
I tried GPS in the city. High accuracy, pretty fast lock and it worked just fine, no problems. Accuracy is usually 3-5m, 17 satellites in use on average. I'm not exactly sure what kind of problems you're facing. However, I can tell you this. A friend has Meizu M1 Note, the GPS was at first very good. But somehow at some point after updating, the accuracy's became horrible, 80m+ and it kept losing connection, IF it managed to establish one. It's most likely not faulty HW, but a misconfigured gps config.
