New info regarding the replacement for the interim "Sense 3.6" we have in the latest leaks. Sounds like a serious improvement over the past UIs.
That sounds awesome...though I really hope they keep the menu button with the capacitive buttons, I would really miss that...

Or at least slim down... the added functionality is nice. It is the bloat and battery killing parts I want gone.

I pick my phones based on hardware. I'm not a fan of Sense, Widgets, and the like. That's why I'm here. I have an Android phone I can customize the way I like. That's why most people are here. Try to embrace that rather than judging people based on your feelings/convictions. That's what people that enjoy products from a certain "fruit themed company" do.
i think people need to stop complaining and/or stfu about sense already, it's getting old. we get it, you don't like sense. hooray for you. it seems the new "hip" thing to do is hate on sense, seriously. it's so god damn annoying to read. sense isn't going anywhere, so get over it. motoblur isn't going anywhere, and neither is any other manufactorers OS. stock android is ugly as sin, and ICS looks like a toy. atleast sense is going to bring visual appeal to ICS, whereas comparing ICS to iOS makes the nexus look like a toy.
tl;dr: shut up about sense, it's not going anywhere, and it's annoying to constantly read peoples hatred towards it. get over it.

Lol damn dude. I was just wondering because all we have are sense roms. Don't get so hurt, I love AOSP too, I'm excited for it to finally come, but for now is it hard for you to even use this? Or do you use Senseless stuff or what? Just being friendly, don't get all hostile on me again.

I don't do hostile posts. I test everything because I like to play with it all. Can't say I don't like something if I never laid eyes/hands on it. Since I do theme and support work, I switch between sense'd and non-sense'd quite often.

I am new to Xda and HTC phones myself and I do like sense. The short time I have been on this site, I have noticed and strangely I might add. People seem to get way to hostile over the Sense vs Asop debate. People have different tastes and what they like and its just as much their choice as anything so why be condescending or hostile over their choice.
The reason I bought the rezound myself was hardware or I would have gotten the Gnex , because I like to mod and play around with different roms. Sense was a bonus for me , because to me its just a theme I can flash or not
Mr Smith is nothing , but courteous and helpful in the 2 forums I have been on so no reason to drag his choice into the debate.
android is about choice. thats why it is different from all other brands/os.
the software can always be changed/rewritten, but you are stuck with the hardware.
like mrsmith i choose my phones based on hardware. i also happen to like sense so that i why i went with the rezound.
thats not so sat that i don like asop. i ran CM7 on my TB for that past 3 months, sense simply has more "polish" and "eye camdy" that i enjoy
personally i hope sense slims down a bit and some of the bloat and useless apps disappear, but finally they realize that beats audio should work for third party apps.
once my rezound is outdated, i will most likely end up with another HTC phone and it will be a 1.5 ghz quad core, 1 GB ram, 8/3 mp camera 10 mm thick sense 4.0 android 4.0 powered monster

I'm on this phone because it is the best phone on the market right now. It doesn't matter to me one bit what comes on the phone (Sense, blur, touchwiz, etc) except that sometimes (as it was with the Rezound initially) its impossibly hard to get rid of.
Now that I have removed like 95% of Sense/HTC related software from the system, installed my launcher of preference, I am extremely happy with my phone and battery life. I'm so glad I didn't get anything else on the market right now.
So there you have it... I picked out this phone because of the phone, not because of the manufacturer or whatever crap bloatware that particular manufacturer decided to burden us with. And just cause other people are sick of reading about how crappy Sense is does not mean I'm going to like it anymore or withhold my thoughts on the subject for their benefit. Negative reviews of a product are just as important as positive reviews.

While if I'm wrong it'd be awesome, but I think that's a typo, it'll probably be 5GB, to compete with apple's 5GB of free iCloud.
I'm genuinely curious if this big kernel source drop is going to be beneficial to us or not. I've heard two sides to the story:
1. "HTC b trollin' man, they drop source and release a new kernel..."
2. Devs can use the old kernel and fix the issues that HTC fixed, along with the other issues AOSP ROMs were having like sound and MMS.
I have no idea what's going on, and I'm curious whether I should expect things to blow up here soon, or if this kernel source has been essentially useless. I'm generally unaware of how long it takes devs to pick apart the kernel code and utilize it. Any input from those with knowledge on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Both are correct. It doesn't really help sense based Roms because sense kernels are going to be newer than source.
However, aosp roms can now be fully functional. Aosp is what many people on here care about and are waiting for.

It still might, but I think I'm still somewhat jaded by the og evo and the support it had. The 3D never really had much, and it's looking like the lte is gonna be around the same.

It's only been a little over a month since the phone first came out. Give more people time to transition and we should start to see more activity. It isn't that bad so far, but most development is based around Sense because no one wants to wrestle with AOSP. Once they get AOSP stuff finished though, we'll be golden.

Yeah, I'm sure that's true. In my head, I figured everyone would be working to get to that point as quick as possible once kernel source was released. Like a giant team project, haha. Instead, it appears that only a select few are tackling it. Even custom kernels seem to be a rare mention. Oh well, I'll continue to enjoy the Sense ROMs as much as I can until someone cracks the AOSP code.

We just need the support of the big guys. For some reason it feels like most of the big time devs haven't moved on to this phone yet, or went with Samsung instead. I know that Preludedrew is working on JB for our phone, I talked to him about it yesterday on Gtalk. Deck mentioned in IRC that he was working on it as well, I believe.
The kernel developers are hiding so far, probably because we don't have the big guys working for us yet. I'd love to see a Tiamat kernel, even if I'm personally not a fan of custom kernels.
Kernel.org is also down, so that's slowing things up for everyone.

I always used custom kernels with EVO 4G and remember zero reboots due to kernel issues . Easy overclocking and underclocking, volume mods, performance increases while still improving battery life... Yes please!

So far my experience with HTC phones have been a very disappointing one. Coming from the OG Epic, all I've kept hearing was how awesome the development for the OG EVO was. So of course when the EVO 3d came out it was my phone of choice over the Epic Touch. That was disappointment number one. Then when the LTE came out, I've noticed all the OG EVO developers and owners was all excited about this phone, so i decided to give HTC another chance. So for I've been more disappointed then at any point. The lack of ROMS, the pitifully performance of sense 4 and HTC's new stance on locking bootloader and sneaky updates with new Hboots was the last straw. What phone will I get next? Im not sure, but it won't be a HTC.

First I want to thank all the crew working on the Super JELLY ROM. Your attention to detail is making this the best ROM I've ever used and I've used quite a few.
I have a question to throw out to whoever has the answer. One of the things I miss most with my update to Jelly Bean is the Quick settings tab in the notification dropdown window.
Are Quick Settings just gone forever with JB, or will there be a Mod for it someday?
I know Super JELLY has something like it as an option is settings, but I just liked the old school one.
From what I've read, the code that allowed enabling that has been removed by Google/Android.
Edit: wait, maybe HTC removed it. I don't use sense, but on AOSP, I have the same toggles that have existed since froyo (or maybe it was GB, I forgot). Just abandon sense, android is much better on the AOSP side.

Truth...
Look man, the evo is a great phone. However, if you plan on having a broad source for development forget about it. This phone is and has been coming up short with custom offerings. Sorry. Because I once loved this phone, but there is nothing here happening for it.
HTC removed them. Started with our last OTA actually as we saw the ATT OneX have quick settings in their OTA, and then when it came to the EVO getting theirs it was removed... Personally thought that this was a sprint thing since other One series had it but now with the JB OTA rolling to all devices now it shows it was an HTC decision as its now gone from all of them...
Maybe they have something in the works for that area, or there are other plans in place for something else completely new?...

CM10.1, MIUI w/4g, SlimRom Official, JB kernels w/ active governors, updates from DEVS consistently, mostly regarding AOSP roms.. but thats just a few..Sorry if what I wrote as opinion bothered you or anyone else. Simply stating what is true, this device has dated AOSP roms, and I was informing the user. Apologies..However, you wont have to hear my opinions stated anymore, I bought a GS3 to get some solid custom roms. See ya!
CM10.1 is here maybe you should look before posting it doesn't exist......and JB kernels will come once source is out... Which will be pretty soon, so dunno what's the disconnect there...do you not know that to build true custom kernels you need source? sgs3 got JB before the evo so naturally they'll have custom kernels before it too...

Every HTC phone I've owned had an aluminum chassis that gave it a bit more heft. They have a very solid and reliable feeling to them. My phones have survived being dropped from all sorts of heights and all types of conditions. My father once dropped his HTC Touch Pro in discarded motor oil and the phone still to this day powers on and works. He has yet to upgrade it because it's only his work phone and he claims it's the most reliable phone he has ever owned.
I've owned the gs3 before I bought this EVO and I have to say. Yes there is more development there, but overall its all the same ****, we have devs working hard for us just like they have devs working hard for them over at the gs3 forums. we have great roms over here for us EVO users. My only real issue is with custom roms (cm based) is my Google nav not working at all but personally its not a big deal, I'm fine with sense, I can get telenav to work there.
I do wish we had miui (which I believe someone is working on, could be mistaken).

So the quick settings are available in Viper4g 3.0.0 I believe they are the only JB Rom that has them thus far.
I'm just curious as to why Verizon note 2 is lacking so much in the ROM development side of things compared to other carriers. Is it solely because we are still only 4.1.1? Just thought it would be interesting to see peoples input!

Only a quarter of a year ago....And even in the thread you linked there were whiny people complaining that someone else at some point had asked the question. Lighten up.
Didn't mean to step on any toes or anything. There just hasn't been hardly any development on here lately so I thought I would get something going. But at my current level of (lowly) expertise I should probably leave that up to the people that know what they're doing

Yet Scott just released a zip that will allow us to flash t mobile, and att roms. Give me a moment, and I will find the thread, and post it here. If you want to see a dead phone, go look at the rezound. The phone is barely a year and a half old, and it is marching into obscurity. The droid incredible has more action. These threads aren't going to produce more roms, just bad attitudes. Try playing with all of the mods we have, and theme it to whatever you want it to be. Morphology, Xposed, and a slew of others. Troll the other carriers threads, and pull mods that you want. That is all we can ask for, unless you are paying the devs a paycheck.

Which have you tried? Both Jedi and Jelly Beans are both great. I am using the mod in my sig right now as I like that it keeps the samsung allshare features working.
With a combination of Jelly Beans, Widget Locker, and a theme you could pretty much get anything done you want. Pick up the odd app or mod here and there to fill in the gaps.
By the way, if you want to give 4.1.2 a go Jedi is running that. It is great if you don't need the Samsung services.
Here is a thread with all the info for running other carriers. This should keep you busy for awhile. Though, I hear sprint roms are a disaster.

I think this has been my main take away from discussions, and browsing the other forums. Quantity in this case definitely does not equal quality. I don't see the point in having 10 options if only 2 or 3 are viable. However, that is just my opinion.
Most source built ROMs (AOSP) are going to have issues, whether major or minor, and are much easier to customize as you're dealing with XML and java. However, the lack of TW features keep people away from them.
With TouchWiz ROMs, you don't lose any functionality, but there is only so much that smali hacking can do. Most of this is just the time consuming nature of trying to hack a ROM via smali only. You could get everything in your favorite source built ROM if you wanted to take the time to do so. But, given that this is a for-fun thing and not a money making venture, developers aren't likely to take that amount of time if they wouldn't use it themselves.

I would definitely prefer a few quality roms with great support than 27 versions of cyanogenmod that are 98% the same. Beans, MeanBean, Tweaked, Jedi, Elemental...that should be plenty to keep the crack flashers happy.

Here is a thread with all the info for running other carriers. This should keep you busy for awhile. Though, I hear sprint roms are a disaster.

Is there a way to run Sprint, and T-Mobile roms on Verizon?

What is a rom really? To me It's just a better version of what the manufacturer builds. The stuff is basically the same for the most part with the addition of tweaks for better battery performance etc... That are added by the dev. The thing that makes a rom different are the things like themes and different looking batteries etc..., so why have 100 roms that essentially are the same? I would prefer to have 1 rom that performs well with a bunch of themes and mods hence i only use meanbean and love the real icon theme, or morphology. Mean bean is a great rom and with pbj kernel even better.

To each their own ya know. My reason personally for rooting and unlocking is personalization, which is why I tend to end up at aosp more often than not. There's plenty of options and stuff to mix around. The only reason why I made a topic about it was because of the extensive development on other carriers. Not because I'm not pleased with what's here, I just have a hard time staying on one ROM for long

This answer makes me glad I didn't flame you last night when I was drunk haha. Meanbean plus morphology is plenty of customization for me haha

stock android firmware has evolved into something so much better than it use to be...im still on beans build 2 because it flatout works and has all the things I need. Its hard to develop when stock touchwiz is so good out of the box. the only real thing that touchwiz needs is themeing. beans takes the cake on that. aosp was nice on my gs1 because it trimmed the fat and made the ol single core with limited ram run smooth. these quad core beasts are designed to handle bloat and a festure rich skins(touchwiz), so aosp does not have the appeal and performance advantage it use to. however for the folks that
keep this device well past tthe point verizon quits supporting it, then aosp will shine...simply for the fact it will bring the latest android offerings and keep the note 2 alive.
I think it had A LOT to do with TW and Spen/Note 2 specific features. Nobody really wants to lose them, and there's only so many ways to mess with TW. There's plenty of AOSP/KP stuff but look at the involvement compared to TW roms... It's there, but not as much... My take on it anyway.
Edit: Yeah, what Droidstyle said, lol.
Sent from my VZW Galaxy Note ll. I like my Beans Mean....v1.08 =D
Don't forget that Samsung has promised an update to 4.2 for the Note II sometime this year. No real timetable, but when it comes it will be a shot in the arm for development.
Myself, I bounce between Beans ROM and CyanogenMod. The S-Pen features are what generally keep me hopping, but both are good.
Seems like a big time slow down on developing for this phone.
Is this simply due to the One?
I couldn't imagine dropping another 500 bucks on a phone so far away from my discount time.

Due simply to the One? No. MeanBean has been dead for a while. Viper appears to have been complete since February. CM10.1 is still in the works. Stock is still being worked on. I'm sure the Sense 5 Port and others aren't just being set aside to never be touched again. I could be wrong about that though.

Could be wrong but have to agree, sense 5 may take a little while longer to get rolling, but there other roms that just dropped. Im a big supporter of utkaar99's work here. If you like sense try his HatkaLTE or his Rage ROM. If you like AOSP ,take a look at jaimeg's threads. Still some stuff happening here just a little slow right now. As far as the One, its true we're loosing some folks to that forum, but thats how it works here at xda. I mysrlf was going to get a One or the samsung 4 but decided to hold, mainly just to see how long this forum will last. Hope its like the Heroc was, even in low activity it still pushed on. Same with the Evo4G, still hangin in there 3D is the same, still going strong. We may pick up some of theirs in the future hopefully. Just gotta hang tough.

It isn't like the days of the original evo. I always had a new Rom to play with and so I wait patiently 4 the next big rom release. I refuse to use a Rom that doesn't have full functionalities. I need my phone to just work so I am staying on mean bean until something worthy replaces it. I do love viper Rom as well.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
I know viper is working on something that will allow mods and roms for the one on other carriers to work on the Sprint variant and vice versa. One development is about to explode. That said we still have some quality roms here in lte land. If you have the time, you can learn to develop and theme.

Good post man.... I would hate to see all development stop for this phone but it won't, it will slow down though.. I think everyone was so used to getting different roms and constant updates to feed the addiction... What they have done is awesome and the part about the roms being complete is true, I can't think of much that can be done with viper, been using it for a while and it's bad ass.. Just debating the One, not sure if I want to jump ship yet, it's fast and smooth, but it's not much better than this in my opinion.

Don't forget to hit the thanks button. When this phone came out there were still a lot of developers working on EVO 3D ROM's.

My husband just got the One (his upgrade from the EVO4G). The only features it has that I wish my 4GLTE had are the dual front speakers (the sound is beautiful!), the IR blaster (maybe not super useful, but can be used for triggering our DSLR), and the international SIM card slot.
The aluminum skin is also beautiful, but it's not going to tempt me to upgrade. It also doesn't have an SD slot, so it wouldn't hold all my MP3s.
I hope development doesn't die on this device. I plan on keeping it for quite a while longer.

I keep wondering the same thing. Got another year to go before my upgrade, and definitely can't afford the one straight up. Was hoping when our sense5 update drops sometime this summer (hopefully) that the current favs like mean, viper, and superjelly would be brought up to date with it, but it doesn't seem that'll happen since those devs have moved on to the one or left HTC all together. Not saying new stuff won't drop then, but for now anything sense will be slow.

Actually, it DOES seem like that WILL happen. As I've said earlier that some of the progress on those ROM's have been completed. There's simply no more to do with them which is why there is no update. Just like the OTA from HTC even though they could be doing more.
I think in this new world of quickly progressing smartphones there are a couple of options for xda'ers. One, upgrade yearly to stay with the new device that gets all the attention.
The second option is the progression that this site fosters. Users learn and build their abilities to create by themselves. Many of the past leaders of EvoLTE have left a legacy of development here that can be built upon. Fortunately, the vast majority of the devs around here will gladly allow another person to take over the reigns and continue a build- or even make it thier own creation.
The site was named xdadevelopers. The purpose for the site is to allow users to learn to be developers. All the tools are here.

Something else to consider is that Android 5 (Key Lime) is on the horizon and may be announced at Google I/O in a couple of weeks. A major OS rev often stokes new inspiration for devs and hopefully we'll see ports of Key Lime ROMS to the EVO LTE (e.g. CM, Key Lime based Sense, etc.).
It ain't dead.
Just have to know where to look is all.. not all ROMs get posted on XDA
I'd much rather have more kernel development than rom personally. I'm learning more and more each day the true capability of the hardware and which software elements dampen it's potential. We have a huge hd screen and dual core I could really care less about the One and sense 5. Like someone else said it can't do much more than viper. I'm testing the AOSP waters for now and loving Slim Bean currently.

Just look in the development threads. There are still a lot of really great roms still being worked on.
Yes a few have left but many still have this phone and many more will probably pick it up second hand or now that it's becoming really cheap on sprint.
For ask those worried why don't you go and read a few how-tos and start doing your own thing.
I really hate these threads. They always happen and never produce something good. Just lame really.
