Possible cause of battery drain found! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

While browsing through my phone looking to find anything that was waking up my phone while it was meant to be sleeping especially during the night I went into my gallery app.
Now I use "QuickPic" app as my default gallery app as I just preferred it to the default on on the S2, so I continued to use it on the S3 when I got it.
However, I clicked into the gallery app just a while ago and too my amazement I found that it had somehow downloaded over 1700 photo's and videos from my windows live writer account to the phone!!
I never set it up to do this or did I even know that it was downloading.
So I clicked menu button and it gave me 3 options:
1. select album
2. Scan for nearby devices
3. View by.
I clicked the scan button and it said "scan started. Device list will soon be updated automatically.
A few seconds later i got the message: "No devices found. Scanning for nearby devices will continue in Background"
Now for me, I think this is what's possibly waking up my phone at night time as its probably searching/scanning for devices.
So i went to settings-more settings-nearby devices and it was set to "off" so it wasn't set up by default as I didn't go near it.
However, does anyone know how I can stop the gallery app from scanning for nearby devices in the background like it said above?
I'm nearly certain that its the cause of my battery drain, or at least a big part of it.
I wonder has anyone else come across this problem?

those pictures are probably cached pictures that wouldn't show up in the stock gallery

yeah they are showing up in the stock gallery? but I can't seem to delete them as when I long press there's no delete option.
But there's only 32mb of photo's showing up on the internal memory so your probably right about them been cached. But how/why did they become cached and how can I make sure that no devices are been scanned for in the background as that's what it said it was doing.

Yep, had the same problem here Saturday night! Was viewing the gallery earlier during the evening and it decided to continue caching during the earlier hours...1GB of data!!! Received a lovely sms from T-Mobile a few hours later to warn me that I had over used my data allowance

Is this linked to the pull media from around me. I noticed that while on the same network as devices sharing media my GS3 would automatically pulling pictures to it which also gave me a lot of lag loading my gallery.
I was looking thought the menus and saw that under the network and sharing tabs there may be a possible way to stop this by switching off file sharing. This can be done in the settings application:
Settings > Wireless and networks > more settings > Nearby devices > file sharing > slider on or off.
Also there is way to leave this on but block certing devices as well under the file sharing tab there is a a menu called "not-allowed devices"

Yes it's set to off but I can't delete the cached photos in gallery app???

Ok I don't have any cached images on my phone but this may work
Use a file manager such as Astro or Estrongs and navigate to /mnt/sdcard/nearby
and delete everything inside of there, let me know how its goes.

Got my TB on tuesday, first Sense phone, two questions about Gallery and LTE . . .

Ok, I got my Thunderbolt late on Monday night and activated it Tuesday morning. This is my first Sense phone, so this is my first time dealing with HTC's custom stuff. Some of them, I like, like the People/Contacts app. But, I must be missing something with the Gallery app.
I copied my pictures from my Moto Droid over, in a folder called DCIM, to the root of the SDcard on the TB. The Sense Gallery app sees the pictures, but it doesn't show any folders. Under that DCIM folder, I had all my pictures sorted into various folders for organization. On the stock Froyo/Gingerbread gallery apps on the Droid, these folders showed up. On the HTC Gallery, it just lumps everything into one massive 500 picture 'Album'. Why? Anyway to resolve this?
Second, I think LTE may be broken. Each time I've attempted to use LTE, its failed. The Notification Bar will say 4G and have multiple bars of signal strength, but I'll have no data connectivity. My twitter feed stalls with a connection error, Flow won't update, no web browsing, etc. Speedtest app just hands at Waiting for Servers. Using the LTE On/Off app, if I switch to CDMA Auto(PRL), everything seems to work fine on 3G only. Since I've only had it two days, counting today, I haven't done full testing in multiple locations yet. 4G is supposed to be live in my city though. Any thoughts on this?

Using the LTE on off app I would switch it to evdo/lte auto. That should fix it.

For your pictures. Put each folder on the sd card seprately not in the dcim folder. All pics taken with the phone will default to dcim/100media folder but if you just put each folder right on the memory card, and label it, you will see them in the gallery like that.
also you may want to look into the app QuickPic, it will organize alow copy/paste and pic/video movement from one folder to another right in the app. no need to access your memory card. also create & rename/ delete folders from app as well.
As for the 4g issue. as posted above, go to market & download LTE OnOff and use that to switch it to CDMA + LTE/EvDO auto. You should be good

I work into the late evening. Fedex dropped the phone off after I'd left for work, I got it when I got home around midnight. I didn't feel like messing with it at half past midnight, so I did the needful tuesday morning.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I do have the LTE switch app from AndIRC, but was using the LTE Only toggle to get 4G.
On the Gallery, so I have to have a few dozen folders of pictures on my SDcard for them to show up? Seems cumbersome . . .Will test when I get home, no USB on work computers.
Edit- I can browse on 4G with the CDMA+LTE/EVDO Auto, but the Speedtest app still doesn't load. I know it gives poor results, I just wanted to run it. :/
With the quickpic app, you can try putting all your labled folders under dcim folder and then long press on folders you dont want to see and select excude from the menu options so you dont see that particular folder
You can put all the folders under dcim with quickpic. I just tested it..
For the gallery, you have to put all the different pic folders on the memory card not the dcim folder...

HTC stock gallery not showing imported pictures

I put several 1080P wallpapers into the camera directory, but none of them show up in the HTC stock gallery app.
But when I changed the files' names to the sequence which the camera app uses, and the pictures showed up.
I never used Sense nor any HTC products before, so I do not know if that is just how the app was designed or not. But it certainly is inconvenient.
So I would rather want to use the 4.2 gallery or the stock Android gallery...Is it safe to push that app through adb?
How did you get the pics on the phone? I had a similar issue, pics a download in the browser would show up in the gallery but the pics that I unzipped from my drop box would not show up. I cleared data for gallery, wiped caches and they still wouldn't show up. I had to do a factory reset for the unzipped pics to show up in the gallery. This was after unlocking/rooting. Don't know if I would've had the same issues stock but didn't try it before unlocking.

In the camera folder it probably only looks for the names that the camera uses, which would make sense. Put them in a different folder.

I have Root Explorer which does the same, but it does not show up on the selections for choosing a wallpaper. However, Root Explorer and other third party media apps do show up on my Galaxy S3...I guess Sense limits the use of the third party alternatives.

That's weird. I can see them with my Incredible. Why would they take that feature out?
Edit: are you sure you aren't in the camera section of the gallery already? You can't use back to see folders or find a way to bring up a menu? If you have facebook set up, you should be able to access facebook photos from the gallery as well (unless they also took this away). If you can't see anything but camera shots, there's probably a menu you aren't finding...

I guess HTC wanted people to use their stock apps exclusively.
There is only one album named 'My Phone', which contains the pictures taken by the camera and screenshot, but not imported pictures anywhere in the SD storage
Yep, my phone picks and chooses which photos in the download folder it will show. If I import from Box, it won't show but if I import from Dropbox, it will... Annoying and weird.

I was having the same issue. except i keep all my wallpaper images in the zedge\wallpaper folder so that my wallpaper changer has one directory to pull from. when i transferred them from my old phone's SD card to the DNA they showed up but then when i went to add some more images they would not show up since the gallery doesn't automatically rescan to find new photos when it opens.
i did download the Gallery Refresh app as stated above and it worked perfectly in making the gallery rescan the storage for new images. Thanks CISGS. much appreciated

Why is Gallery so SLOW!!??

I first saw this on my wife's S3 and now I have the same thing on my Note 2. Whenever I go into the Gallery app, it is so extremely slow. I thought it was building indexes or something, but my Thunderbolt wasn't this slow. I have searched around and can't find anything.
I do have images on an extSD card, but even before I put the card in the pics I took on camera were slow to come up. I can use other apps like quic pic but I don't think S-pen works with other apps.
Anyone else seen this?
EDIT: It appears the S-Pen works fine in quic pic. I was able to select and copy to clipboard just fine. I would still like to know why Gallery is so slow though.
hmm I'd call mine quite fast. I have 42 local pictures already and it that album and facebook ones instantly and when I click local, the pictures all pop right up instantly. Have you noticed reads/writes from your memory being slow with anything else?

My phone overall is very fast. It is just the gallery. The fact that I saw it on my wife's S3 made me wonder. I even moved her pics off of her extSD card and onto her internal memory. Then I reformatted her card. I also reformatted my card in the phone before putting the pics back on it. Quic Pic works like a champ, so I believe it has to be Gallery.
No issues here with opening gallery, pics taken from phone or photos on memory card. Also my s3 was fast.
Yep, mine too. I have a lot on my card, when i open the gallery it shows a bunch of gray squares that should be the folder names.it takes forever to show thumbnails for some reason. Never had this on my S3
I have 6000+ pictures separated into 50+ albums all stored on my 64gb xdhc and its fast. for an album of more than 600 pics, the gray boxes turn to thumbnails quick enough to keep up with my scrolling.
I'm in the same boat as the OP.... It takes quite a long time to load up my pictures in my gallery. Quite annoying...
use a ultra high speed sd card an it will help with gallery speed. i have a 64gb sandisk that reads 50mb/s...

I have had the same problem since owning the S3 and now the GN2. I have about 6gb of photos on my internal storage and a couple gb on my sd card.
I have been able to figure out that it's something with my home network. Try to turn off Wifi and then open Gallery on all 3 of my Sammy phones the gallery is instantly fast.
PS Someone also told me to disable Tag Buddy and Face Tag as well.
Motorola is similar yo this except that the moto gallery pinch room is choppy. Quick pic fixes. Its something about the ui that makes it drag along on the gallery. Hopefully they address it because my old gs2 didn't really have that issue.
Same issues with gallery sometimes
I've noticed some slowdown on the gallery but mostly when other apps try to access it.
Like if i try to look at the gallery from picsay or something.
I notice the camera folder shows up right away but it hangs on the other folders.
I have it showing all my facebook photos too. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
And I have noticed its quite hit or miss. Sometimes its instant sometimes it hangs.
It is quite weird when the phone is so fast.
I would love to know what is causing it.

I haven't found a way. I went into facebook sync and unchecked "sync gallery" and changed the gallery sync interval to never, then went and cleared all data from the gallery but it went through and downloaded them all over again.
Did you try changing the sd speed? I switched from the default 128k to 2048 and my galleries load as fast as I can scroll

I too have this issue. It would be worth trying what LordRalh3 mentions. Dont know if this is going to help. I had several pictures on internal memory until I remembered to install my external 32gb card, it is slow both ways.
I had the same issue, and found that gallery was caching a ton of data. Over 2 gigs the first day! I cleared it, and again the next day it began caching data again. I have resorted to disabling the app, and I am in the process of wiping to see if that helps. I will let you know what happens.
Stock gallery is bull****. Better is quickpic i use it nearly 1 year
Wiping did not help. Gallery still as slow as molasses. I will report back on cached data. How would I go about changing the sd speed?
I just changed the sd speed to 2048. There was no difference. This is really annoying. I turned off syncing with picasa, facebook, google +. Im not sure what else could cause such a slow down.

[Q] "Media" app draining my battery?

Hi all, thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I've been going between 2 ROMs recently (Tron 2.1 and PAC-Man 23.0). For both of them, it is showing that the "Media" app is using a larger percentage of my battery (around 18%). I'm just not sure what this app is, or how to disable or remove it.
When I click on the app from the Battery details, "Force Stop" and "Report" are disabled buttons. Down below, it shows the included packages being "Downloads", "Media Storage", "Download Manager", "DRM Protected Content". I haven't been downloading anything, nor adding songs or movies, so I'm not sure what this "app" is spending its cycles doing.
Thanks!
I guess that it would be a better idea to report this incident to the ROM developer..
I have the same problem sometimes. After a google search I found that basically, your phone is searching for all the media on your internal and external storage. What causes the wake lock is that it is searching for or has found a file that is corrupt. It basically gets stuck on that file for awhile.
I had the wake lock for a couple days then it just went away.

That is really interesting! Using a previous ROM, I do have a few corrupted images from a camera-app-gone-haywire. I'll have to clean those out (which I should have done anyway), and see if that helps.
Great idea!
No problem! I should go through and clean my SD card out, but I am too lazy and don't have the time to spend on it. I just deal with it because I usually have a charger nearby most of the time.

Check to make sure the .thumbnails folder in the DCIM folder isnt overloaded with 2GB of images. Dont use the stock camera app regardless what ROM you are on. It accesses the stock Gallery app which in turns eventually creates thousands and thousands of "thumbnail" images. More like small pics at about 400x300 resolution. It JAMS up android.process.media .. hell.. it would make my phone hot because sometimes it ran straight for 24 minutes killing cpu.. deleted all the files in there and stopped using the stock app, no more problem.

So what do we do when we have been using the stock gallery and camera app? Can I delete the .thumbnails folder? What kind of camera and gallery app do you recommend? I have both stock samsung and stock android camera that I use everyday...
I have been using my phone (unrooted stock) for quite some time now and only recently did the media act up on me and killing the battery. I have rooted and install custom rom and reformatted my sdcard.
It'll now i kinda check the battery more frequently.

Just following up (I asked the original question). What I've found is that between various ROMs, I have two images folders on my sdcard. Mostly, I just went through and deleted a few invalid images (I think my Tron 2.0 ROM used to take corrupt images, but no longer). I cleaned out many many images I no longer needed as well.
Also, not sure if this is related: I uninstalled and reinstalled Google+ (which has an image auto-backup feature). I had been restoring it from a backup, and I think it got corrupted along the way. It was no longer automatically backing up images, for example.
Since then, I've been in much better shape, and I haven't noticed the Media process taking as much battery.

[Q] Where does stock HTC Gallery store database?

Somehow, my gallery is showing the same pictures twice. Not all, but many. If you long press, and click details, the picture name and location for the two are identical. I've verify that only one copy is on the SD card. I've tried clearing data for the gallery (via the app menu in settings); I also tried deleting /data/data/com.htc.album (which had some database files, oh, I should note I have root) as well as deleting all .thumbnail directories. I figure there must be somewhere that I'm not looking.

How about first backup all your pictures to your PC so you're sure to have them, disconnect from PC, then try delete ALL of them through Gallery.
Maybe there's a backup on your ext_sd and that's why?
Here's something web-wise that might apply (google):

I saw that, but I'm not on JB, and the path given in details for each image is identical. I do have a backup, I'll see what happens when I delete one of the two. As you can see, I've got several thousand pictures, so I'd rather not fix this one at a time, esp since I'm going to be flashing a new ROM soon. I just want to try to figure this out. There has to be a way to reset the gallery and get it to rescan my SD card fresh.

However my gallery in ICS CM10 may be different than yours.
If your images are synced to the web is there a chance that they show up as the second images?

Yeah, it's the stock HTC Gallery. The only option in settings are "Perfect Pics" options. There is no way to delete full albums through the gallery. They are not synced to the web. The details dialog for the images show the exact same details down to the path, filename, everything, for duplicate images.
I deleted one of the pictures, and just deleting one, made both disappear from the gallery. Copying back that single file, there is only one shown. So, looks like it is definitely a goof up in the gallery database. Now to just figure out where it is on the filesystem.

Yours looks different from mine--mine has a text drop-down menu where you have an icon of an album.

Can you do it through HTC Sync, or perhaps an after-market file utility--alas the File Manager that comes with CM10 allows me to wildcard search "*.jpg" and shows them all in a list, however at that point didn't allow me to select them all at once to delete all at once, just individually.
However, my images are stored in DCIM/Camera/ and I have those folders on both my int and ext sd.
Your camera settings may give you the option of where to store photos--possibly there's a "both" option, idunno.
The free app Quick Pic that I use gives me the option to select all my photos or albums at once and to delete them at once.
Maybe that is the easiest solution.
I really appreciate you trying to help, but I'm almost sure the issue is the database the gallery creates. I've been using ES File Explorer to try to find this database and delete it, to force the gallery to re-parse the entire filesystem. I'm positive that the database has duplicate entries for the same file. Deleting and restoring pictures external to the gallery app has no effect. Deleting the pic from the gallery causes the gallery to remove both entries in it's database, and when I add the picture back, I get only one, as I should (which effectively cleans the db for that one particular file). This database has to exist somewhere, it's just a matter of finding and deleting it.
I submitted a question to HTC support. We'll see what they say.
Maybe it's not your device.
Maybe it's just syncing to a cloud storage.
I know that my brother's girlfriend's Motorola Xoom was sending pictures directly to her Google+ account and she didn't like that. It took me a while to figure out that's what it was because we'd delete all the pictures and still they'd show up.
Maybe that's what's happening to you.

Up top on the left, see if you can switch that view to Album. Then check the settings about Selecting Albums.
Yours looks different from mine--mine has a text drop-down menu where you have an icon of an album.
And I was using the on-screen buttons--Home, Menu, Return, Search, when I said to use the Settings, it was the Menu button on the bottom of my phone.

The stock gallery isn't that smart. On the main screen, you can select to show pictures from local storage, Picassa, Flickr, etc. But these show the same path for each duplicate "/mnt/sdcard/ext_sd/DCIM/100MEDIA".
Why not just try "Quickpic"? Better than stock IMO.

I could use a different gallery, but just as an exercise, want to figure this out, since it has to be solvable. I'm going to flash a new ROM soon, so it really doesn't matter, I just want to solve this, since it seems like an easy problem (figure out where the gallery db is and delete it).

Possible it doesn't keep a database, just scans each time, and is listing the same photo under two headings even though same path?

It may not be a database proper, like a SQLite database, but there is definitely some sort of cache that it builds. If I add a huge directory of pictures, open the gallery, it takes a while to parse through it all. Subsequent times opening the gallery, the pictures/thumbnails are available instantly.

Thumbs are built and kept in a folder under DICM. there is most likely a process that scans the folders for pics and then makes a thumb if it doesn't already have one.
Thus there are actually two copies of pictures on your phone. One is full sized and the other is a thumb size.
You can copy all the pics off your phone to one folder on your computer, then delete all the photos from your phone and then copy them back from your computer.
If you have thousands of pics, I'd back them up anyway. dont want to lose some great pics...

Yeah, I've tried deleting the .thumbnail folder to try to get the gallery to rescan. Say I have 1000 pics, and I add a folder of pictures with a 1000 more, the first time I open the gallery, it shows 1000, with a spinning wheel. Eventually, it'll populate with 2000 pictures. And you can tell it's creating thumbnails. If I just delete the thumbnail folder, when I open the gallery, it immediately shows 2000 pictures, but it'll slowly recreate thumbnails. That's why I think there has to be some other cache somewhere, and in my case it has duplicates in it.
As for backup, I have a Synology NAS (with 1TB RAID1 mirror) that all of my pictures are backed up to, and I use the Synology DS Photo+ app to instantly backup pictures as I take them to my NAS. Once a month, my NAS is mirrored to a 1TB USB drive.

Yeah, some of those thumbs did look pretty good.
