Has anyone ever played online games using their phone's USB tether? Either on a console or on a PC.
I just thought about this and got curious. My PS3's in the repair shop so I can't try it out my self. Has anyone ever tried? And is it possible? :O

Droidpad! Check it out on play store! Don't remember on USB but it definitely works on WiFi. Excellent thing. (Getting used to controls takes time )
Edit: You might want to see nJoy as well. Only Wifi though this one.Paid I think (Haven't tried)
If you mean connecting to something like PSN or Xbox live. I played COD4 on PS3 using a wifi hotspot and it played ok, a bit of lag but playable. Never tried with USB but wifi hotspot is easier

Yeah, that's what I meant. I think you should have less lag if you go USB though. Faster and more secure connection. That's what I think.
But good, glad to know it works

I know what you mean. Instead of DroidPad I use Gmote though. Been using it for a while and I really like it.
But what does the other app have to do with this? Lol
Back then when we didn't have router, my brother and I played RF Online with mobile network, tethered via USB in his Sony Ericsson Dumbphone
So yeah it works, but when the signal goes down, sometimes it freeze for a while

When I tried it I could only get Ad-hoc connections. My ROM on my Transformer didn't support Ad-hoc so I couldn't complete my test.
yes it doesnt work yet it only does ad/hoc and isnt good
All of the wireless tether for root users are ad-hoc. Only the built in tether from Froyo and later are infrastructure.

That's incorrect. Both my gf and a friend are on an Evo 4G with wireless tether for root, on Sense, and have infrastructure wireless tethering.
Well I apologize. If you are still stuck with an original Evo 4g then it supports it... http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...otspot-infrastructure-capabilities-on-evo-4g/

Well My first Idea didn't work, But has anyone looked at porting this method over to the Photon, Looks like if you had the right tools u should be able to update the directories to work with the Photon. I might be wrong, sometime I wish i had more time to dig in and teach my self more advanced Android programing.

No access control either
This version also reports that the Photon kernel doesn't have what's necessary for access control, so that will have to wait until custom kernels flow in from the geniuses (of which I am not one!).
I also have been unable to connect when any kind of WiFi encryption is selected; only way I can connect with my Mac (which is the only way I can test) is to disable encryption.
Our power went out, so along with no router, there was no cable. I knew from this thread that the newest Wifi Tether wouldn't work but I downloaded it and tried it anyway. No joy.
Next up, I grabbed Barnacle Tether. It's got only WEP encryption but I was up and running and was able to stream an entire move from Amazon's video streaming without a hitch. So, that works! Give it a shot...

I had no luck with Barnacle - any settings that need to be tweaked to make it work? WEP is better than nothing!

I streamed Limitless to my Dell XPS m1330. My wife and I had forgotten we were even doing it - there was absolutely no stutter and no re-buffering. When the movie was over I remembered and was really impressed.
I don't know much about the settings, ad-hoc vs infrastucture, etc. All I know is that the wifi tether did not work for me. As others said it looks like it is transmitting but I can never find the SSID. Barnacle fired up and worked right away - no tweaks needed on my laptop.
edit: We just knew with no house internet access and no cable we could and wanted to watch a movie with my phone. I was originally going to buy it on the Android market and connect the HDMI from the phone to the TV but I don't have the mini-HDMI cable. Also, my TV is older so no DLNA. Only other option was the use the hotspot so my laptop could access the web and stream. BTW, when I accidentally clicked on the wrong window (I had the Android Marketplace Movies window open, also) it said that the movie streaming from Youtube was not set up or allowed for my country. That was wierd - the only thing I could think of was some IP address thing due to my using the wireless tether from Barnacle.

I don't think so. I just changed the stock SSID (to "MoPho", lol) and set up a WEP password of my own, 5 characters. Clicked START and it was up and running.
Alright I'm not sure if you guys are aware, but our phones are capable of tv-out via HDMI, and this is done via the MHL protocol which attaches an adapter to the usb port for simultaneous charging/HDMI out. Taking advantage of this I thought "hey it would be awesome to rock some emulators", but the traditional bluestacks/wiimote combo is not compatible with our devices due to some driver issues and samsung bluetooth stacks. So I scoured the internet looking for a solution that wouldn't involve me having to buy a bluetooth peripheral, and found out about "Sixaxis" control; this app allows one to use their existing PS3 Control as a joystick/input method, and works extremely well. It's worth the buy and is extremely smooth.
So After you have and have set-up the Emulator with your rom; you've set-up the Six-axis control from the instructions, connect your phone to your TV through MHL, set-up the input settings, and have fun!
Here's my Set-up

That shocked me too. I paid $50 for a phonejoy to get around that.
I too was already expectant of the lack of bluetooth for stock roms, since I tried the same with the Captivate. But a random google search showed it running on the Galaxy S II (International Variant), so i gave it a spin!
Damn... I'm gonna have to grab my sixaxis from the car and bust out A Link to the Past...

Nothing beats old consoles, just me replaying my childhood memories of Smash is amazing, considering how fluid it plays from our phone!
Ya know even with the video I was a skeptic. To test it they have a test app that can be used to verify it will work. You still need to go through all the steps and part of it involves a pc but the whole thing does work.
I loaded snesoid and mapped the joypad and buttons on my ps3 controller to the emulator disabling the virtual pad and the trackball options while I was at it. Once done I was playing super mario all stars on it pretty easily. There is virtually no lag between the controller and the game.
Tested on a stock rooted rom. No custom roms flashed at all which means I definitely used the standard samsung bluetooth stack to test it.
im running UnNamed and it says its not compatible. any ideas? or do i hav to run CM7?

First of all your phone needs to be rooted for the application to access root permissions, then install that app, and there's 2-3 times it'll ask for root permissions where you have to grant them. It should say it's compatible.

One thing I've encountered:
Running Sixaxiscontroller will cause a semipermanent bt_wake wakelock in the kernel. You need to reenable (and maybe also disable) BT in the main Settings menu to clear it.

The computer im using doesn't have a wireless network card( it's an old computer).
and im wondering if there is a way i can get my phone to be its internet until i get a card.
I want to turn it into a FTP server.
Any help that helps, THANKS
Relative to the wireless part. I have a couple of these that I got just for this type of purpose.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
Cheap, FAST and very handy to have around in the case someone brings over a computer without wireless access.
As for using your phone for the internet, that works good for browsing etc... but you will have a hard time getting your phone to provide services like service (FTP) since the IP is NAT'd....

Glad to hear PDAnet works. I tried the Wired Tether on the Google Projects page with no luck on CleanROM 1.7.5 or CleanROM 4.2.2.
Seems to be a kernel issue I think the one from Google will work when we get aosp or cm working. Maybe the ics official release will let it work on sense roms. The PDA net app works fine currently.
I use ClockWorkMod Tether. Love it.

So heres a real annoying problem, so much to the point im starting to become depressed :/
Nothing major change that i know of, my phone worked great until like a week ago. The problem is with the wifi.
It connects and all, bit it acts as if its just slow connection, but its not because on my computer / laptop its fine. for example, youtube wont load a video, i cant download a single thing from the play store, even facebook is acting wierd. But as i said its connected to the wifi.
Now for the last weekend i went up to my brothers, and the wifi on my phone worked flawless. This is what confuses me. :/
Original s3, no root or nothing, jellybean ofc.
Any ideas anyone? :/

So, I'm moving. And my PC doesn't have a WiFi card in it for the time being. Ethernet is out of the question.
I have an unlimited Verizon 4g plan... but I heard they don't let you tether for free anymore over their network with unlimited. (I can use WiFi root tether, but that's beside the point.)
I've tried using the Settings => Usb Tethering option, but stock sense doesn't let you tether without a 4g connection enabled.
Any ideas? (Preferably something without dumb limitations, like no https etc, but beggars can't be choosers.)
Thanks!

Definitely works and will do the trick for now. Thanks man.
The free version kind of blows... I go through the allotted data in like a minute.
Do you notice pretty low speeds, or connection drops when the phone goes to sleep? Do you know if I need to keep it always screen on or something? Or is this the level 2 screening?
Wish there was a way to do this natively without having to do all this, but will work in a pinch. Thanks!
it works by using a advanced proxy type thing( its complicated) but i notice no difference with it on level 2 and none and witht he phone off i do have a fox fi key though since i use it for work a lot. with the free version i did notice it was slower but i had that version so long ago they had it where it was unlimited but only 180KB/s so it was slow regardless, this was a OG droid so long time ago. its still cheaper than getting hard line lol and an one time only payment, i used to have issues on windows 8 but their newest pdanet client for desktop fixed those. i get around 20mbps in the field generally when working.
hope this helps explain some things.

Thanks bud, yeah it helps. I'll probably end up buying it eventually... WiFi Tether [Root] works fine for WiFi, but for some reason FoxFi scares me. I feel verizon will strip my unlimited away from me while using FoxFi. Not sure why I feel safer using the WiFi root tether app though.
they should be able to tell your tethering with a normal non proxied app. In reality though they can allways tell if they cared but unless your use more than like 6 GB idk they would care if your plan is expensive enough lol.
Yeah, I wish there was another way than pdanet to do it. Wish there was a way to tell if the speeds are just my phone or the free pdanet version.
how low are the speeds on speedtest.net on pc vs on the app on the phone, mine are almost same.
I was.... "Testing" the download speeds through pdanet. Its about 1000Kbs slower through pdanet.
