[Q] (Q) Odin stuck at setup connection - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got a new Samsung Galaxy S3 and I've been trying to do the quick CF-root
- Model Number GT-I9300
- Baseband Version: I9300XXLE8
Its completely stock, I wanted to root it particularly to get rid of the bloatware. To the best of my knowledge I've done everything correctly.
USB debug on
No Kies running in the background
Odin detects the phone connection when in download mode ("added" appears)
pick the .tar file, make sure repartition is unchecked
hit the start button and it gets stuck at "setupconnection" in Odin.
Also tried running odin in administrator mode taking out the battery for a while to no avail.
Your advice is much appreciated.

Try a different USB port.

Do not connect through USB hub
Try another port (as previous post)
Another USB cable
USB debugging on
KIES process not running in PC tsk manager
Could also try uncheck "reset time"

Sorry to take so long to reply. I've tried all the above except untick reset time.
An interesting note is that I recently tried to flash my Samsung Galaxy S1 as well and it comes up with the same problem. I kind of gave up on the matter and accepted that I can't root my S3, for now anyway.
Any further information would be grateful but not a priority for now.

Have you tried the other rooting method??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660918

Odin v3.04
Try the latest version of Odin:
NEW: ODIN v3.04
and or
1. try a different PC
2. reinstall drivers

I do have similar problem but that's because I wasn't in download mode. Are u sure u in download mode?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA

TRY THIS
This happens to me too (new unlocked S3)
I had also given up but then I figured out how to get past it by accident:
When it is stuck, just unplug the USB cable, then plug it back in, and ODIN happily kicks in and does the flash with a successful PASS result.
Done it quite a few times now.
Jsut a weird quirk of the S3 it seems (my old Note was fine).
BTW I tried different USB ports, nonhubs, cables, ODIN183, 187, 304 etc. All did same, until I found this trick, and BTW I am actually flashing via a hub now and it works fine with this trick.
Hope this helps.

Yup, certain I was in download mode.
Wow the trick worked, very interesting.
thank you very much asifanwaruk, and to everyone else who replied.

Closing all Kies processes via the Task Manager did the trick for me. Thanks!

Hi all,
i flashed at first the "normal" CWM recovery via heimdall on win7, and after it didnt work for latest CM9 nightlies, i was trying to
install the "touch" version ... after the "PASS" in Odin3, the device rebooted ... but after going to the recovery again, i ended up
in the old CWM one ... can someone help me out to re-install a working recovery?
thanks for help

Flash back a stock Rom then re-root with cf root

Changing to a different cable and port worked for me. Thanks ya'll.

Just putting it in download mode fixed mine. Try that

same problem here, just unplugged the cable in setup connection and plug in back quickly and works just fine, tnx to all.....

worked
just simply unplug battry, remove sd card, put back the battry, problem solved

Stuck on setup connection
Hi Guys...
Please try the following
ODIN/Download Mode
1. Make sure your device is completely off
2. Volume Down, While holding this key down simultaneously press the Power button until you see a disclaimer on the screen
3. Then let go of both buttons and press Volume Up to accept the disclaimer
4. Once the green robot is visible on the screen this indicates that handset is in now ODIN/Download mode
GOOD LUCK:good:

thanks alot ''Could also try uncheck "reset time" is helping me alot for nexus i9250..

This is on my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Lte GT-i9195 . Strangely enough i managed to flash the GT-i9190 using the LineageOS 14.1 with the custom clockwork . However my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Lte GT-i9195 nothing happens on Odin .
The screen has the following under download mode in odin :
Odin Mode
Product Name : GT-i9195
Current Binary : Samsung official
System status : Official
Knox kernal lock : 0x0
Knox warranty void : 0x1
CSB-CONFIG-LSB : 0X30
BOOTLOADER RP SWREV : 2
WRITE PROTECTION : ENABLE
This is not my first flash , Im familiar with the flashing processes , I've done 3 phones . I tried cyanogenmod , LineageOS and various other stock roms all worked fine . My issue is I have no Boot recovery image . Nothing wants to flash via odin . Stock software crashed so I decided to repair it since it was out of warranty period , No matter what i do nothing works , i can flash perfectly on other samsung devices from the same port , the same pc , tried different roms , thinking roms were damaged via download or extraction . The best of my S4 Mini's are dead the LTE version anyone has a solution give me a shout out please .

2-the device if you let me enter recovery mode and download mode in recovery mode try to reinstall packages but I get an error saying
E: can not open / sdcard / update.zip (no such file or directory) installation aborted
download mode (volume -, home, power) I get a caption that says "keyPressed 164", when I connect my device to my pc I get as "unrecognized device", and installed and uninstalled the drivers but I get the same error, odin not recognize me in this way, but in recovery mode if you know me
I need your help guys who can help me
forgiveness for my bad English, I try to explain to me as clear and precise as possible
So did you successfully get into download mode? If not turn off your phone, take out the battery, plug your usb cord into phone and computer, while holding vol up and vol down at the same time pop in your battery. That should get you there

^^^ What he said. If you still get problems, try different versions of Odin. Sometimes that makes the difference.
If your trying to go back to 2.1 then just look for the stock odin files. Try the toolkit, it should have everything you need

friend, I recognize my odin mode device download, instead if I put it in recovery mode if it appears to me that odin recognizes
to try to connect my device to download on my pc so I get "device not recognized"
Try deleting your old drivers. I would assume that since you are having trouble with Odin and download mode now, that you haven't flashed the GB bootloaders.
Go here and get these drivers and all the Odin goodies.

Odin does not recognise S3

Hi,
I followed all of the steps in CF's post about how to root the phone.
When I put the phone into download mode, and connect the USB cable Odin doesn't recognise it.
But when my phone is normal, it comes up as COM:3
I am using the stock cable, updated version of Kies, tried both debugging on and off, and have the latest drivers.
I also switched from USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 port, and same thing.
First time rooting my phone.
Help please.
Thanks

Hi
I don't understand what you are trying to say, but I tried on all 4 of my usb ports and it didn't work.
I know they all work as I use a laptop and currently have a mouse, keyboard and external hdd connected
Have you try with other usb cables?

Hi
So I tried to connect to another computer and it still doesn't work.
I also tried 2 different cables, and all the USB ports on the computer.
I also tried factory resetting the phone.
Do I need any pre-installed software on the phone itself?
I live in Australia, and bought the phone online.
I got the french version, as it came pre-installed with SFR bloatware.
Any response from your PC when you plugged in? Did your PC even try to install driver?

Hi,
Yes it installed the drivers, although i didn't install Kies as it wasn't my computer.
I tried with USB debugging off and on,
It must be installing a wrong driver.
Try this driver :

This while the phone is in normal mode.
While in download mode, Odin doesn't even recognise that the phone is connected, even though Windows makes the sound that device is connected.
Use a PC laptop has been reported multiple times with this very problem .
This while the phone is in normal mode.
............
What is normal mode ?????
Odin only works in download mode.
jje
Normal mode is when the phone is like everyday use.
Turn it on, put in sim card code, and phone is ready to use.
This is normal mode.
What I am saying is that Odin does not recognise while in download mode, but it does recognise while in 'normal' mode
Why don't you try using another PC?? It's so strange that the phone isn't detected in download mode.
I have already tried another PC, with all updated drivers.
This was an actual desktop, and i tried all USB ports and it didn't even recognise whilst in 'normal' mode.
Maybe its my phone?
Only reason I want to root my phone is because of 4.1 and to get rid of touchwiz

[Q] Noob In Need of DESPERATE HELP!!

Hello Everyone,
I apologize if this isn't in the correct place, but I'm at my wits end with patience with my Att SGH-I777. I've been all over this forum and others trying to figure out my problem and have absolutely no problem admitting that all of this is above my head. Here's my issue: I attempted to update to JB using kies the other day, halfway through I got an error message that the update failed and that the next step was recovery mode. Attempted this and it also failed, several hundred times. My phone has now been stuck in recovery mode for 4 days. Ive downloaded ODIN and am ready to try to flash the phone with JB. As I understand it, because I can still get my phone to both the DL screen and recovery screen all is not lost. My problem however is that I can't get ODIN to recognize my phone. It shows that its been added, but doesn't light up yellow. My phone only shows in my devices and printers as "serial gadget", no longer as removable mass storage device. I've downloaded and uninstalled kies multiple times, along with the drivers separately, nothing has worked. Please help!
Thanks!
OK. You seem to have done your homework. Good start. We need to identify where the problem is, as it could be several possible things. For instance, you must not have Kies open or it will tie up the drivers and prevent the connection. Sometimes just for good measure, it is a good idea to uninstall Kies so that it cannot interfere. You can always reinstall it later if you need it. You will need to have the correct drivers installed. In windows you should go to "Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a Program" and look for "Samsung USB driver for Mobile Phones." If you don't have that, then you need to install the latest version of the driver. If you do have it, then it is a good idea to remove it in windows, reboot the computer, and reinstall the latest version of the driver.
The problem could be leaving out a small step in the whole process. Complete the following and let us know which step you are unable to complete.
How to use stand-alone Odin3 to flash firmware:
Follow and recheck each of the following steps. Do them in order listed, as some steps are dependent on previous steps. Instructions are for Odin3 v1.85. It should work with any version of Odin, but some details, like color of items, may be different.
1.) Open Odin on the Windows Desktop.
2.) Have the USB cable plugged into USB port on the computer, but *Not* plugged in to the phone.
3.) Shut the phone off.
4.) While holding down the vol+ & vol- keys, plug micro-usb plug into phone.
5.) In Odin, you should get the yellow box under where it says ID:COM with the text 0:[COMx], and in the Message area, <ID:0/00x> Added!! where x is some number, usually 1-8.
6.) In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked and all other items are not checked.
7.) Click on the PDA button. Browse to the tar file you want to install and select it so its path appears in the text edit box next to the button.
8.) Make sure the check box next to the PDA button is checked.
9.) Click the Start button.
10.) You should see the green progress bar advancing.
Let me know if it flashes successfully. Regardless if it works or not, before you close Odin, copy out the information in the Messages section and post it back here.

Thanks for the reply. I uninstalled Kies, as well as the drivers, rebooted the comp and than reinstalled the drivers. I'm using Odin v3.07, so I'm not sure if this is the reason I'm not getting anything other than the usb added in the message box, as this may be all that happens with this version. I attached a snippet of what I'm seeing after plugging in my phone and following the steps you outlined. The flash failed and this is what was in the message box. I never made it to the point of a progress bar.

I'm not sure if there is an incompatibility of this phone with the newer versions of odin. Why don't you try downloading Odin3 v1.85 and see what happens when you try it? Go to the Download Repository, link in my signature, and there is a download link near the top of the page.
Also, which version of the Samsung driver did you install, and where did you get it?

That's good! It's probably not Odin, but more likely the data quality of the cable, or a degraded connection at one of the USB ports, or any number of things similar to that. Anyway, glad you got it going.

[Q] Soft-bricked, two versions of ODIN hang, out of ideas

I'm running a Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGH-I777) with the Shostock 3 ROM using the instructions from GalaxyS2Root (which I have since learned was not wise, but hey...you live and learn.)
Last night I plugged it in to a new charger, and when I woke up the phone was frozen on the Galaxy S2 Splash screen (the one with the yellow exclamation mark and the model number). I've tried several things to get it back, but nothing seems to work. I have tried:
•Getting back to stock using the I777UCKH7-CL503881-No-BL download from the "getting back to stock" thread at XDA but it hangs on the "cache.img" step, and now my phone shows the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue..." screen. I tried this several times with Kies installed, on, off, uninstalled and drivers only, and nothing made it past that step.
•Installing the latest firmware from sammobile.com via Odin 3.07. It gets to the "factoryfs.img" step and then gives me " Complete(Write) operation failed. All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)" despite re-installing drivers, switching ports, and doing it without the battery in. Also now the box with the phone's ID is blue, not yellow, despite further driver re-installs.
•Installing the Siyah Kernel, also via Odin, where the same error message occurs after "NAND WRITE START."
I have spent the better part of my day working on this, and I am completely out of ideas. As of right now, when the battery is in the phone it automatically starts itself up to the "Phone > ! > computer" firmware error screen recommending I go KIES, which does not recognize the phone (And, I have been turning off during ODIN runs and is currently uninstalled because I downloaded the S2 drivers directly).
I've been told that as long as I can get into download mode (which I still can, though I can't get to recovery) there is still some hope, so if anyone has any ideas I would be extremely grateful.
First, the reason for failed odin flash can be one of many things, such as bad usb port (on computer or on phone), or bad usb cable. Try other ports, other cables, even another pc. Also, Odin 3.07 may be a problem. Odin3 v1.85 is known to work with the I-777. I've had one person switch from v3 to v1.85 to get a flash to go through. And sometimes when there is a problem with odin flashes failing, multiple tries will eventually result in a pass.
The following is for recovering from nand read/write corruption on the I777. This may or may not be your problem, but it's worth a try.
1)Go to this post and download the Tar version of Siyah 2.6.14 Kernel. Flash it in PDA without ticking Re-Partitioning.
2) Successful? Nice. Next, flash the full stock Gingerbread distribution from the Download Repository, I777UCKH7 including the bootloaders and everything, in the PDA slot.
3) If that is successful you are done.
If it is not, then:
4) Download the SBL Bootloader from the Download Repository. Flash it as PDA in ODIN, without ticking Re-Partitioning.
5) Flash the Kernel, as in step 1.
6) Flash the full stock Gingerbread distribution, as in step 2.

Flashing the SBL Bootlaoder from Odin 1.85 works and allows me to see the Galaxy S2 logo screen again instead of the Firmware error.
After that though, flashing the Siyah 2.6.14 kernel hangs up at the "STARTING NAND WRITE" step and stays there until I unhook it, which takes me back to the firmware error and requires me to flash the SBL again.
I only have one USB cable, but I typically use it for file transfer and it worked with the SBL flash, but that may be the culprit.
Also, when I hold the volume buttons and restart, it goes straight into downloading mode and does not allow me to choose to factory wipe the phone. I feel like if I could get that menu back, it could possibly solve the problem.
Thanks for the help so far, I'm glad I can at least get back here. If I don't have the original USB cable, how can I get another one and be sure it will be sufficient for the job?

Update so far:
I cleaned the USB port, which did turn out to be full of lint and other crud. I still can't get it to flash anything but the bootloader.
However, the phone will do nothing at all when the battery is in, and only works when plugged into the computer with no battery inside. I had been getting battery temperature errors, so I think it being kind old, a cheap USB cable, and the port being dirty for who knows how long probably fried that battery. I'm gonna get a new battery and a new cable and see if that helps me out.

Well, the new battery came in and still nothing. The screen will turn on again, but otherwise the behavior is the same. Except for a new cable, which I'll get tomorrow, I'm out of ideas.

[Q] Dead Note I717 Please Help!!!

Hello All,
OK so here is the deal. I have done a ton of searching and reading and as it helped a lot I still have this issue. I bought this Note about a month ago used. I never rooted it nor do anything at all with it but literally make calls or text. I plugged it in the other night before bed to charge woke up the next day to find my note completely dead. after much research i found what i Believe to have is the dreaded SDS and that many people have this issue but with the S3 and Note 2. It did start freezing and such before it died but I never upgraded firmware or anything. So after my research I plugged the phone up to my Win 7 laptop and it began installing drivers but then failed to install. did more research and found that it had the missing qhsusb_dload driver. So after more research I finally found driver and installed it and now my laptop recognizes it but Kies does not recognize it nor does odin3 v3.07. now odin3 v1.85 on the other hand does recognize it. so it tried to flash the stock Rom but nothing odin never finishes. Is their any way at all to come out of this Sudden Death Syndrome and bring my phone back to life?? Please all help on this would be a god send!!! Also just to be clear this phone does nothing I get no picture, sounds lights/led or anything. the only sign of life this phone has is that when i plug it in to my laptop it gets recognized.

I cant tell if it gets into download mode. i get no image at all on the screen.
With Odin open, phone off, try the holding down volume and plugging up the usb as suggested. If you get download mode, you should be able to tell if Odin shows it in the block. Then try your flash.

yea I've tried that with odin3 v3.07 but it never got recognized but odin3 v1.85 did recognize it. it shows the block and i did everything it starts but never finishes. The very first time i did it though it did finish but with an error. after that time now it never finishes. I guess im probably down to just getting a new phone or sending this one to get JTAG'ed. but by all means if anyone else has any suggestions please feel free....
What exactly do you mean when you say Kies does not recognize yoir phone? Are you referring to the firmware version? As long as your computer recognizes the device, recognition of the firmware does not matter. Put phone in download mode, open Kies, tools, firmware recovery/upgrade and follow the prompts. Have your serial number handy because it will ask for it. When you enter the model number, use all caps (SGH-I717). 440Bro has a simple to follow guide here but they are closing the airplane door otherwise I would link it. Good luck.

Ignore that and run the firmware update and recovery. As long as the computer recognizes the device it should work.

Be sure you are using the stock usb cable and connected to a powered port. Also charge the battery fully before you begin.
What does the PC popup or do when you connect your device? Does the device show up in "my computer" ?
Since you can't see anything on the screen I want you to try something.
1. Pull battery and write down serial number
2. On PC open Kies, click "tools - Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
3. Type in SGH-I717 (all caps)
4. Type in serial number
5. Replace battery
6. Hold volume down and power button together for 6 seconds then release both.
7. Press volume up button
8. Plug phone into PC and proceed with kies firmware recovery.
Hopefully that might get you somewhere.

I tried as you suggested but Kies will not recognize it so the Start Update tab stays greyed out. When I connect the phone to the PC I hear the PC do its sound and I see it show up in my device manager ( Not in my computer ) but in device manager of the computer and it shows up in the device manager as this " Qualcomm HS-USB QDloader 9008 (COM8) ". Now when I use Odin3 V1.85 the block highlights in yellow and says ( COM8). I do not think the phone is recognizing correctly because I stated earlier the first time I plugged this phone into my PC which was after this issue started never before while it was functional but when I plugged it up it started to install the drivers but would fail. it would say in the device manager of my PC that I had a missing driver. After looking for this mysterious driver called "qhsusb_dload driver" for hours I finally found it and installed it and then the phone installed without failing afterwords. The only sign of life my note has is when I plug it into my PC I hear the dong-dong sound that's it. With Odin3 I do not even have to do any type of volume/power combination as right when I plug it in Odin3 say's " <ID:0/008> Added!! " I then click on PDA and im prompted to choose the file. I choose file " KIES_HOME_I717UCMD3_I717ATTMD3_1117019_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5 " and hit start and this is what I get
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable...
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> KIES_HOME_I717UCMD3_I717ATTMD3_1117019_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<ID:0/008> Odin v.3 engine (ID:8)..
<ID:0/008> File analysis..
<ID:0/008> SetupConnection..
It does nothing else unless I unplug it and it then tells me
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0/ failed 1)
<ID:0/008> Removed!!!
Ive left it without removing for hours with nothing. Is this rather common if a phone has the SDS issue?
I'm sorry to hear you are having all this trouble. The fact that odin recognizes it tells me there is some life left in your device. Kies not recognizing it is puzzling. You either have bad drivers, or a bricked device. I would try another PC and see if kies will recognize it, or if you can complete a flash on odin. If not I would send it to www.mobiletechvideos.com If it's bricked jtag repair is $40 bucks.
Try it on a different computer or laptop

Kies has a retarded amount of checks...
Use Odin. It's for us advanced users to manually flash when kies does this.
That's why Samsung releases the .tars...
They know this happens.
If Odin recognizes it, IT'S NOT BRICKED.
