Hey there, I hope someone can assist me.
I updated my Galaxy S2 to ICS and everything went smoothly.
Only problem is that existing movies that were copied are now missing and cannot be seen in any explorers (phone or windows) yet when checking the properties in windows of the internal drive it lists the used size as 8.38GB, although just checking the properties of the visible folders the size is only 858MB.
If I remember correctly I had them copied in the usbStorage folder before doing the update to ICS, now the folder is empty.
I have all system and hidden files set to be visible in windows.
Has anyone seen this before or know how to rectify it.
Thanks

Good to have a copy of personal data from your phone on a different place, such as your PC.
Maybe the media scan needs a kind of "refresh" or update to collect all media files on your phone.
Have you already wiped cache partition (and Dalvik cache) in recovery mode?
If not, just do so by pressing Volume UP + Home + Power buttons as long as recovery menu appears, then select wipe cache and reboot.
Sometimes this helps media scanner after updating to ICS.
Good luck !
Thanks for the feedback.
I tried clearing the cache but the problem is still there.
I can explain it like this, when you look at the storage space it shows 11.5GB of internal storage with 3.5GB available, but the totals of everything does not add up to 8GB, only to about 900MB.
It seems that the movie files I had on the internal storage are now corrupt somehow and are not visible anywhere.
Still looking around to find a way to fix this.

Have downloaded some videos onto the phone via kies but some of them have transferred badly. After an age of looking I have absolutely no idea how to delete them.
They don't appear in the files folder, you cannot tap and hold to delete, and there is no delete option on the video. Does anyone know how I can get rid of these videos.
Thanks
If you know the location open via My Files menu and delete .
Or use USB mass storage mode and delete via PC .
If you dont know the location check where Kies put them .
jje
Thanks
Gone into my files and there is nothing in there at all.
Cannot see anywhere on Kies to show me where it has put them
Gone into the USB mass storage mode when you plug into the PC and again you get the same folders as on the phone and all are blank
This is a major screw up by samsung if you can't just select a video and delete it as I am struggling here. Are there any apps out there to find these files?
I ran into the same problem yesterday and I couldn't figure it out!
I don't actually understand the 'file structure' on this phone. Where is everything stored?
When I connect my phone to the PC, I get two distinct drives, H: and F:
From what I can see the INTERNAL phone memory (which comes up as H: on the PC), is located at /mnt/sdcard.
What is the 'external_sd' folder that's located at /mnt/sdcard/external_sd actually for? It doesnt seem to correspond to the sdcard that's in the phone.
How to I access the sd card mamory from file manager within the phone?
I've tried looking for the videos I recorded using ES File Manager, but I cant find them anywhere...
Glad I am not alone with this one. Samsung need to sort it quick. At the moment I am wondering do you fill up the internal card and thats it because you cannot delete the videos?
external_sd is a link to whatever memory card you put in, it seems weird to me as well. In astro under tools - sd card usage this gives a treesize type view which might help track down your missing files.
downloaded astro file manager and done a search on the file name and has come upp with
/mnt/sdcard/DCIM/Camera/*****
**** being the file name
I then press and hold and on the menu that opens select show directory and there they all are. I then press the multi icon and was then allowed to select the file and delete it.
Thank goodness for that!!!!!!
Thanks for the help
In fact I now go into the files folder in the applications screens, then DCIM and now a camera folder is there with them all in. That was not there before but is now after installing and searching with Astro file manager

The sdcard/DCIM/Camera folder is where the pictures and videos taken with the camera go to, if it wasn't there before, I assume you've never taken a picture or recorded a video before.

These videos came from Kies and they were nowhere to be seen until I downloaded astro file manager. What is strange now is the DCIM folder says 0 as though it is empty but it is now full of these videos from Kies when you open it. All very strange and it only appeared after I did the search. before it there was nothing even in astro file manager.
I did take 2 photos the other day and again they have suddenly appeared in this folder

Thanks for that. That's what I thought, but the first time I tested it it didn't work, I just tried again and it worked just fine. I put a file onto the sdcard and it appeared in the external_sd folder.
One other question, /sdcard and /mnt/sdcard both seem to point to the internal memory. Is there a reason it's listed twice?

Hi, I'm new to these forums having just recently rooted/modded my phone. There's been tons of helpful information on here so thank you, but I haven't found someone with this exact question or with what seems like a good solution yet. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant (Tmobile US) and I modded it with Cyanogenmod 7.1.0.1 and everything works great, except trying to download large(ish) apps from the market. Smaller apps download and install fine (few MB). But when I try to download the "Wind-up Knight" game for example, it says "Error downloading 'Wind-up Knight'. There is insufficient space on the device." That game is 41.64MB. My storage is almost completely empty. I upped my internal storage partition to 4GB form the default 2GB just to test but it didn't help. So my storage looks like:
SDCARD
Total Space 10.84GB
Available 10.75GB
INTERNAL STORAGE
Total space 3.75GB
Available 3.68GB
ADDITIONAL STORAGE (/mnt/emmc)
Total Space 1.84GB
Available 1.84GB
When I first installed CM7 mod, I cleared cache and then installed mod. I thought maybe I didn't clear everything right so I went back and formatted everything except BOOT and SYSTEM and reinstalled CM7 mod. And I still get this error, even when it's the only app I'm trying to install right after clean format and mod.
I saw in another older thread on CM nightlies someone had mentioned deleting the marketcache and moving it to the emmc partition for more storage space. But all my partitions are pretty much completely empty so there should be plenty of space. I also saw solutions to clear cache or dalvik cache so I've tried clearing all cache I could find including those two.
I'm not sure if this is a CM mod problem, a Vibrant specific problem, or an Android problem so hopefully I'm not posting in the wrong spot. Any help tracking down a solution would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Sorry about that, new and wasn't sure which forum exactly it should go in. Thanks for moving it for me though.
Just as an update in case anyone checks this. I completely formatted all partitions last night (except /boot) and then put CM7 back on and large apps still say insufficient space. Not a huge deal since there really aren't that many apps that large, I just want to figure it out now.
Some devices have a download limit size for apps from the market. Before a conclusion is drawn (that your device is one of these), open root explorer and navigate to "cache/download". Delete all files in that folder (if there are any) and try to download the app again. To find out for sure your device's download limit size of apps from the market, go back to that folder (using root explorer) and check how much space is free (located just under the folder's name at the top when you are inside the folder).
Theonew, that did it. I actually used ES file explorer (rooted and system mounted), deleted everything out of the /cache folder (there was no specific download folder). And a few apps crashed lol, but then I retried downloading and it worked. Thanks for the help!
I've been having this same problem on Captivate, Illuminance 3.0. Clearing cache did not work. Rebooting my phone each time it starts happening did work. It would seem the cache clear and reboot solutions would be tied to the same "problem" people are running into.
So as I've read, usbStorage isn't really a folder. The weird thing is, I copied some files to the usbStorage folder 'successfully' at work. Well, it didn't give me any errors while copying the files anyway.
Before copying I checked if I had enough storage space because I had to copy a couple hundred MB's worth of wav files. When I got home there was nothing there which, as I know now, was to be expected.
The problem is I DID lose the storage space... How am I ever getting that free space back!? Can't very well delete non-existent files.. Confused :S
Some extra info: Running WanamLite 10, custom rom, rooted ICS.
Thanks for reading,
Rajiv
What are you expecting to happen? The usbStorage folder is for USB OTG (i.e. something plugged into the micro USB port, like a memory stick or hard drive), nothing else.
Uhm, yeah. I've read that.. After encountering this problem, obviously.
So what was I expecting? Regular folder behavior of course..
What I would have expected to happen, knowing what I do now, is an error message along the lines of not being able to write to that particular folder.
Neither happened though and now I'm missing a couple hundred MB of storage space... Any ideas on that?
Not having had this problem before, I would copy all folders on to a PC, format the SD card then copy the folders back in.
Might want to copy the folders over one by one.
Edit: have you checked to see how large you 'lost.dir' folder is? Long pressing on any folder then selecting details will show you the size of that folder.
I regularly delete the entire folder. I deleted it for a friend last week. His was 2.4gb worth.

Today I found - after trying to make a foto - that my SDCard doesn't seem to be not accessibl anymore - at least the cam app says this. After some ivestigation I found out that the SD is still accessible but all files and folders are in read-only mode. I checked the perms with ESFileExplorer and found no hint why (775 was set correctly) however the properties dialog of differnt file managers always says read-only. I tried to access, remove and create files/folders via pc o that card (format FAT32) w/o any problems. So I made a backup and format the card within the phone and what shall I say - it seems to work again.
Does anybody have an idea what this may have caused?
SGS III + JB 4.1.2 I9300XXELL5_I9300VFGELL1_VD2 + XXELL5_JKay_Deluxe_Stock_v14_5_4 + rooted with SGS Toolkit
Thanks a lot!!!
BTW: I used the search function already but I did not find an explainantion which matches fully to my problem
Possibly found a reason
Hm, may have found 2 possible reasons for that behaviour:
- SolidExplorer (strange behviour as after start of it a lot of files partly w/o filname (only . or @ or y) are displayed, partly not visible in other file managers and after some time I can't delete/change no file on that card anymore)
- Too high value vor SDBooster (used 1024 now reduced to 512) - but for my understanding this should not be the reason as it was working for a long time w/o problems.
Will investigate later and will inform about the outcome...
Help on this thread please.
Same problem here.. My torrents, my camera, sms backup and restore, titanium backup, everything else specially those i set as daily scheduled activities always end up having unsuccessful results..
The problem can be worked around by unmounting->re-mounting sd-card..... every 5 minutes or so...
HELP!!
format it
Why didn't I think of that in the first place? Geez..
So anyone here who really understands the problem?
Note(2)worthy response using Tapatalk HD.
I have exactly the same issue as you, at the very beginning, i notice this problem when i was taking photo and said my sdcard is not accessible, it then changes to use internal storage.
Let me list out my symptom and solution:
Symptom:
1. The sdcard looks fine, no special error thrown during android startup.
2. Just after startup, i am able to write file /copy file to the external sdcard
3. After a while, the external sdcard becomes read only. I can view/copy files from sd card, but not write/copy file to the external sdcard.
4. No apps can modify the files in external sdcard
5. By using ADB shell, type mount, and you will notice the /extSdCard is mounted as "ro", which means read only.
Description:
If you have the above symptom, your external sdcard probably have some problems...
When I was checking the mount details on step 5, i noticed that the default options is onerrors=remount-ro , it looks like the external sdcared is remounted as read-only because it has problem on external sdcard....
Solution:
I put the external sdcard to a Windows PC, and run scan disk (right click the drive >"properties" > "tools" > Check Now).
It really find problem on the FAT of the external sd card!!! It fix automatically and my external sd card is working fine now.
In my case, it doesn't need to root or format the sdcard.
Good luck!

My Device:
I am using a Galaxy S7 SM-G930F 32GB Exynos running IronMan-Rom V1.2.0 and have TWRP 3.0.2-4 and the phone is rooted.
The Issue:
Something is using 13.85GB on my internal SD/Storage (see attached screenshots) I discovered this yesterday lunch time and have since spent a few hours on here and other forums across the inter-webs trying to get to the bottom of the issue. To try and discount and head off any none relevant data/answers related o the issue below is a list of what I have done so far -
Its no app cache related, because wiping the delvic and data cache from TWRP did nothing to change the other storage figure.
I deleted every scrape of data from the internal Storage/SD manually and also wiped internal Storage/SD from TWRP and no effect.
Its not app related and I have checked all my app caches and the 10 largest don't account for a fraction of the 13.85GB.
Auto update in the Google play has always been set to disable since I installed the ROM, so it not caching anything
I type *#9900# and deleted the dev/cat log, and this made no difference.
I tried SD maid, It found 2GB which I removed, didn't effect the internal storage and just broke google play services causing to it to constantly FC - utterly pointless app.
I have tried several other SD tools (SD tools, OneTool, CCleaner and numbers our SD manager type apps from the playstore to name a few) to try and ascertain what exactly is using the space in the internal storage and nothing so far has shone any light on the subject.
I have manually rum TRIM via Lspeed app and that made no difference.
DiskUseage (see screenshot) is showing it as 'System Data', but I am unable to browse or select it - and it doesn't make any sense its called that either.
My knowledge of linux is limited, but I am wondering if the internal storage is an actual drive and not a symbolic link to another location, if that's the case where is the other location so I can see if I can clean out the phantom data from there.
Doing a factory reset does indeed remove the 'phantom' 13.85GB of data, but I absolutely do not see why this extreme measure has to be taken. There surely has to be a reasonable explanation and fix for this?! As I would prefer not to have to spend a chunk of my weekend setting up my bloody phone all over again due to have to factory reset.
So while doing another search on the playstore for tools to help me, I found a tool called 'Diskinfo' and this showed one of the mount names for the internal storage as /Data. I then reinstalled TotalCommander, did a properties check on that folder and found 17.GB of data in that folder. So am gonna painstakingly go through that folder to see if there is one that roughly matches the 13.85GB mentioned in the OP.
I then found the mysterious phantom data, it was all the files I have placed into 'privatemode' So as I now understand it (privateMode), instead of just encrypting the data where it was on the external SD card, it moves the data to the internal storage/SD card. So I will be looking for an alternative app to private mode.
Hey. I'm having that issue with a costumer. I would like to know how you erased and/or solve that problem. Thank You and very helpful info.
Eventually found file '0' using an app called SD Card Manager - Samsung Tab A Android 5. Removed 4gb of data. Excellent!
I seem to be having a similar issue on my s9, I've only had it since early February this year. My apps is only 10gb, and I have ~34gb of files that on there, yet my 60gb is nearly full
Can someone help me, please??
I have an Edge phone that has almost all of my Internal Storage gone!
I have 64.00 GB and 19.62GB is taken up by "Apps", how do I fix this??
I'm not using that many Apps, so I don't understand why this is happening....please help!
Ok so what if you are not using private mode? How do you remove this data without doing a hard reset? I can see it on my disk but can't get rid of it? I have never used private mode on my phone before, used CCleaner and there is still about 17 gigs worth of **** stuck on my phone.

Hello, i have the same problem. Have you been able to recovery/find that data from the privatemode? My brother's S7e is on some Note8 rom and i can't find anything 'private mode' in the Settings. He has 300mb free of 24gb and literally not a single picture on his Internal storage.

Just do a search in setting for 'private mode' and disable it, at some point your brother has enabled to password protect some files on the device.
More relevant info here - https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/what-is-private-mode-and-how-do-i-use-it/
All this is happening to me and my private mode is off. I literally copied and pasted all of my files from my phone storage onto the computer to relief the size, again, plus the CClear app, and the dent released around 2gb.
12gb is used on a 32gb phone, removing everything it is at 29.2gb maxed out.
This is nuts...
I clear my phone out every couple of months. Images to keep on the computer, removing unnessisary things. Private mode has always been disabled... What do I need to do?
