Note: Root access is required in order for this to work.
Since I've found a workaround to install apps not showing up in the marketplace and haven't seen anyone address the issue other than rewriting system files, I thought I'd post this for people who (like me) don't know how to use the first method.
1) search for the app you want on Google in your browser, ie "xxx android"
2) click on the result leading to the Marketplace website (IMPORTANT: be sure to open the link with your browser and not the Market!)
3) click the "Install" button
4) you will be prompted to login, enter your info (you should only have to do this once)
5) this time, choose to open with Market when prompted
6) click the "Install" button and your app will download!
Hope this helps anyone

When I try this method, the search finds the program I'm looking for but as soon as I log in and open with "Market", not the browser, it replies with "Program not found". So I guess it doesn't work for me.
Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

What app did you try? I can try the same one and see if it works for me. If it does, I'll try to see what went wrong.

It was iBird Pro. It cost money, but just try to get to the point to where it try's to confirm whether or not you really want to pay for it.
Thanks,

Its not working for me either which leads me to believe its the app. Go ahead and try another free app just to see if the method even works.

Worked perfectly with Evernote.
Thanks a ton, less hunting for apks now
I checked Evernote, and Evernote shows up as downloadable for the Nook Tablet without using the work around.

Oh, well then... I feel stupid? Edit: I didn't see it when I tried searching for it in the Market app.
Just tried it with Google Maps and no dice.
Ok, I tried AVG Mobilation Anti-Virus Pro, and it came back with something like "Sorry but you can't download because you haven't paid for it" and then I got the good old "! Your device isn't compatible with this item".

post #5 for a list of apps you can download through your browser - just click on the "remove this frame" to activate the download.
(thanks to spoland)
there is a newer version I found somewhere but I can't find it now (v6.0.3)

I don't understand how this can work - if apps aren't showing up in the Market on your tablet, surely that's because Market thinks they're not compatible with your NT. And if that's the case, when you sign into your account in the browser, the same thing would happen of not letting you send the app to devices it doesn't think are compatible?
In browser, the Market doesn't even list my NT as one of my devices, even though I'm signed into the Market app on my NT. Any thoughts on this?
I've had this method work twice and fail a couple times. At step 5 when it opens up the market the app still shows as incompatible but it downloads it anyway.
Torrential91, can you give me an example of an app that this worked correctly for you?

I just had it work for Real Racing 2 free version.
I tried it with facebook, but there was no download option, just a note saying it was not compatible with my device.
This method was successful in getting to the app page where i could not before.
I tried "Real Racing 2" and it did indeed work for me. It gave me the message "Your device isn't compatible with this item" but it went ahead and downloaded it anyway. So it does work with some items. Maybe it just doesn't work if there is a cost associated with the item.

I know Google maps worked for me. I believe Tumblr also worked this way.
Seems like this method is hit or miss. Can't really say why =/ I'm not a dev in any way, just a guy that experiments with trial and error haha.
Maybe a dev can chime in on this?

Not to sound ignorant, but is this on a rooted nt? I put the android market on here and it wouldn't even start up, so i'm assuming this is the case.

Yes you need root access in order to run the Market.

I followed all the steps but when I choose market for the prompt it pops up and says your device isnt compatible with this item. Any ideas?
On gingerbread I was able to click Youtube links from any application and launch them using the youtube app. I was prompted once to do so and every time thereafter the app would launch.
Now on ICS, i never once got the prompt to chose internet or youtube app, it just launched every youtube link using the browser which i detest.
Does anyone know what option/default i have to clear to get my app back as the default for links?
I tried clearing defaults for the browser and any apps that i usually click youtube links in to no avail.
Thanks for any info...
It has to do with crapple and its patent suit. The app associations is the work around that HTC has come up with. Presently there is no way around this. It sucks, we know. Blame crapple.
Oh wtf... Lame

Whoever encounters problem like this:
Search an App on Google Play but it's not listed in the search results, and it does exist on Google Play.
In my case, I can never search out WhatsApp Messenger or ASTRO File Manager.
The Android version of my device does support the app.
You can download it from internet!
+1 to downloading from the internet. I just did a search for it on my phone via google play and it popped up for me. But then again i already had it installed lol. It's pretty cool little app. I'm going to use it mostly for when I'm out of the country!
Try searching for it using the Google Play website on the PC, then ask to install it from there. If it's not supported or has a random problem with your device/location, it'll tell you and you'll know what to do.

this happens with other apps. how do i fix this and why is my phone not working with google play the way it should?

I had a similar problem with my phone. I changed the dpi to 240 and voila. Try it may be it can work out.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
Try try to use capital letters.
One problem with PlayStore is if the phone isn't 240dpi it might become incompatible. So you'll have to clear the PlayStore data and set it back to 240dpi.
Also developers can set their app to not be compatible with your phone. The way I get around it is to log into Play Store within a browser. When you download an app from the browser it will show you a list of all the Android devices that are associated with your gmail account, hopefully the app is compatible with one of that device. Then download it to that device, then back up that app to apk to send to your phone.
It's one of the annoying thing about Android right now.
thanks
thank you guys , that worked great and its something so simple. went to gmarket and i had so many apps to update , i had no idea
cheers
Hi,
I am using Galaxy s3 and upgraded it to Jelly Bean.
Till now whenever I used to click the link in S3's default internet browser, I used to get the app to open it. For e.g. if i clicked on Google play link, it used to open google play appl. Or if I click on youtube link it used to open youtube app on my android device.
But now, every time i click on any such link, it opens app in web browser. It is very much annoying.
I have cleared all the defaults of all the apps like Internet, Youtube, Google play etc but the issue still continues.
Seniors can you please help me in this issue. I really tried all the things but no success.
Awaiting for your help.
Kind Regards,
Anoop.
Possibly not much of a solution but try using a different web browser, there are far better than stock. Try using dolphin browser HD or Chrome. There are a few more but they are the ones I recommend.

Has anybody got a solution to this? I'm also facing the same issue.
go to settings - applications - your browser - clear defaults.
then click a play/YouTube link and just choose the corresponding app

Doesn't work...interesting thing is even after clear defaults from dolphin as well as stock browser, it only gives me these two options to choose from when I click on any youtube link,e.g. in FB. It never gives me an option to select youtube app.
I'm on Viking 5.1 | Android 4.1.2, although I'm sure the ROM should not matter. I remember it used to work on 4.0.4.
