This is my first android phone. Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. I plan on rooting my phone tomorrow and I was wanting to put 2.2 firmware on the phone. I have been told that there are different roms and such and I was hoping someone here could tell me which is the best way to go about upgrading my phone. I tried reading some threads but I am not sure which is the best way to go. Any help would be appreciated.
If you've never rooted your phone and installed a custom ROM before... Read, read, read these forums and especially the thread for the ROM you are thinking of installing. Know how to get yourself out of a jam before you even get in it.

After reading this and understanding a few things, you should be able to flash new roms, backup, restore, fix a brick, etc.

+1...This is what I followed when I flashed my wifes vibrant awhile back, and followed again just a few days ago when I picked mine up.
As for 2.2 ROMs...you will just have to play with them. I would recommend starting with flashable ROMs as they are a little easier to work with if you do not have a lot of experience with flashing
I might suggest this one if you want a no frills basic 2.2 stable, rooted ROM to work with

Thread cleaned. Stop the flaming.
Thanks for the replies! I will start off with that nice guide on how to root the phone. I get the phone tomorrow so hopefully I will not be in here crying about how I ruined my phone. The last phone I modded was the first gen iPhone a few years back. There are so many different things to read that this is a little confusing. I mostly created this thread to get pointed to what works best for those on this forum.
Hi there, I am looking for a step by step guide for Bell users who are stock 2.3.4 and looking to root, unlock, change roms etc. The problem is, I'm currently having trouble finding this information. I am coming from a Nexus One, and then a Desire Z, where the process was much easier.
When I search around, I find conflicting ways to do this, with separate instructions for the Bell Atrix vs the other versions. I know we don't have a Bell Atrix section, and I tried searching but couldn't find anything other then this here. Can anyone confirm these are the steps to make this work?
When I figure this out I will write a definitely write a guide for us Bell users. Thanks!
For unlocking, I've seen multiple Bell posts confirming that IHOP (international house of pudding works).
I'm on my phone so I don't have the link handy, but its in the dev section...

First of all, welcome to the community of freedom and awesomeness. LOL.
What version of Android did your Bell Atrix come with?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
I don't/can't remember off top of my head if there was anything else I did besides everything explained in Pudding section, but I can confirm that those steps work.
Also, those steps mentioned in the link you provided also looks very similar and should also work.
I think I have those forums bookmarked somewhere on any of my computer, will look it up and see if I can find, I will update this post. Besides, Pudding method works. If you want to try, go ahead.
Cheers!!!

It came with stock 2.2.2, and updated with the OTA last week to the 2.3.4
I'll try the IHOP steps and put together a guide for Bell users if all goes well, thanks!
I've asked the same question too, but I've posted it on a different website. If mods here allow it since it's related to the topic, i've provided a link below. I asked this question just yesterday on Atrixforums and I put up a general list/steps as to how you can get from stock 2.3.4 Bell Atrix to be able to install custom ROMs. Can other people verify if this list is correct?
Thanks

Used this for rooting and confirmed works on my Bell Atrix 2.3.4: briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root/
Made a forum thread about the steps to install custom ROMs from stock: atrixforums.com/forum/motorola-atrix-help/5590-q-verifying-steps-installing-custom-rom-onto-my-bell-atrix-2-3-4-rooted.html

EDIT:
I've just done this and I can confirm that this works! I now have an unlocked bootloader.

Just make sure you use the right kernel for the rom.
Well, managed to get rooted, bootloader unlocked, booted into recovery, and flashed Gobstopper 2.3.4 with the fixes. It worked good. Then I figured I'd try CM7...
Didn't work out
Gave me a build.prop error. So I wiped the cache, dalvik, erased data, and did a restore (glad I did that backup).
Now, I seem to be stuck in a boot loop. Luckily, I can still access fastboot, and the recovery and such. I'll try flashing the original IHOP file again in RSD lite
* edit - that worked!
The YouTube video worked perfectly, with the exception of explianing how to root. A user posted that in this very thread, so I guess theres no need to write a guide since those video's are good.
Thanks to all who helped!
Hi All
I am looking to root the telus Galaxy 4g model T959P. I have read that the T959D can be done by doing Odin to speedmod kernel then flashing the stock telus kernel which is 2.3.3 not the 2.3.4 that I currently have. So I don't think that will work. Has anyone been successful with this and if so please share. I know I am suppose to be in the forum specific to my phone but that isn't going to happen see the link below. If someone could help me out that would be great....

Just as a heads up, Ive tried super 1 click 20 different ways to sunday, another guy tried Z4 Root. I have searched a lot of forums (none that actually refer to this phone since they don't exist). Google searches bring up some information but it is all foyo based nothing for gingerbread. Any developer want to take a crack at this? I'm kind of surprised there isn't even just a Telus forum here........
I sure hope im not the only one that wants to root the telus galaxy 4g

Moving to Q&A
Can anyone write up a detailed step by step on how to flash a radio to the Phoon. My intention is to get this unlocked so that I can use it on att or straight talk.
I got the bootloader unlocked already using qbking videos.
I can donate for the help as well. Not trying to bribe. Just willing to return the favor for someone who is willing to help me get this phone to work with att/straight talk so I can use att 4g on it (hspa+?)
maybe qbking can make a video for that as well? Thanks in advance for anyone help here.
I saw the thread that is available for this but I have not been able to understand how to do it. Its as if its written for people who understand the ways of flashing radios. At least to me it seems that way.
I have searched and searched and for some reason it seems like im the only one that wants to do this? Had my phone flashed to pageplus using beigephone. Im somewhat computer savvy but never delved into the phones, and am not familiar with linux. From other guides ive read it seems that i could do this but i have questions. One: is there anything specific to rooting an already flashed phone that i need to take note of? Specifically pageplus? Two: what is the most comprehensive step by step guide to rooting a verizon htc dna? Anxiously seeking suggestions from those more knowledgable than I. Three: is it necessary upon rooting to run custom roms? Or will the stock one still function as it did but with greater access? Will the fact that it has already been flashed necessitate me to do one or the other? Will i have to re flash the phone? I thank everyone ahead of time for your time and expertise on the matter.
