[Q]S3 storage capacity. Is it enough? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi. just a quick question. is SGS3 storing game data downloads to internal or external sd?
i know there are apps to link to external sd but just want to know cause i might take the 32gb version. thanks

Depends on game to game and app to app. Some apps allow external storage game data while others don't. For example gta 3’s latest update was to be able to move the data onto external storage.

generally if you install 3 or 4 hd games it will simply fillup your internal sd. so if you are an avid gamer then its better to hold out a little and get 32 gb

Yeah the 32gb might be better if you're into gaming. I have nova3 and mass effect among other games installed and they've really eaten up alot of space. Out of the 16gb, you only have access around 11.4gb which less than what the S2 offers

[Q] Extending Ram using external sd card partitioning

I remember there was a method to partition part of the external sd card and use it as extra RAM.
Can anyone explain how to do that with the GS3?
I seriously doubt there is a way to do that. Even if there is, why would you want to!? The SD speed will be horribly slow when compared to the RAM, it'll just not be useful in the slightest.
I don't remember how but you can set up a swap file. It would be better to mount it to internal storage but that is still going to be slower. I screwed around with this quite a bit on my N1 and never was able to get better performance than not using the swap file at all.
This was useful and a major feature in the early device custom rooms G1/Hero etc. There is simply no need for it on the handsets nowadays. It was used due to the limited ram in early Android handsets to cache apps to free up main memory for the running apps. Which up until the N1 the was at Max 128MB of in built ram. You have nowt to worry about with 1/2GB of ram.

Would moving apps to as card...

Increase performance?
I've a 32GB class 10 sd card, very curious to know if having another place for apps to load from would increase or decrease performance?
Thank you

Although I tend to try to store my data mostly on my sdcard the internal memory def is faster at reading and writing ..

[Q] buying xperia sola

hey guys, i know that xperia sola has 8gb internal memory but 5gb user available right?
so which memory card should i buy?
should i buy 16gb or 8gb would be enough?
i only gonna put like 50 songs, probably one 720p video which usually takes 700mb, some casual android games from the market, and some heavy gameloft games like mc3, nova and so on.
which should i buy considering it has 5gb internal memory available for user which makes it a total of 11gb if i 8gb+internal memory and a total of 19gb if 16gb+internal memory.
and which colour colour should i pick. white or red? i dont want black i have been using so many phones with black colour my whole life so white or red?
If u have to put so many things on the memory i suggest u to take a 16 gb class 10, a ext sd card make all very slow if it is not enogh good!
I prefer the red one,but when i bought it there is only white -.-
Since the price is almost the same for 8&16 (at least where I live) I'd get a 16. You won't have to worry about the space if you decide to put more files in it later on.
But make sure the class is high enough or it will make your device laggy. I'm not sure what class would be good enough for android as I always use the class 10 cards from my cameras, but I think 4 minimum.
Oh and I'd get red, it's an eye catcher.

First of all the user accessible memory is 4gb only.
Now to answer your question, it'd be better if you go for 16gb.
Reason - You said that you will play heavy games like mc3. Now when you install these games from the play store, they download a big chunk of data on your internal memory (usually 1gb+) now since the user accessible internal mem is just 4 gb, you'll only be able to keep 2-3 games at max.
But there is an app by the name "gl to sd". Using this app, you can transfer those "big chunks" of game data to your external memory. (requires root).
Now you can keep around 5-6 games along with those songs and 720p movies you mentioned.
I am using Xperia Sola with a class 4 16gb mem card. have about 5-6 big games(mc3, asphalt 7. dead space, gta3, max payne etc), around 300+ songs, and still have 3-4 gb free in my mem card. Moreover I keep my internal mem of 4gb as free as possible.

thank you im gonna take the 16gb card class 6.
about moving apps from internal memory to sd. im not too worry about it. i recommend Link2sd. it is much much better than any apps out there that have the function to move apps to sd.

Micro-SD memory card for S3

hello everyone, im new and i have a question: i want to buy a memory card for my GT-I9300, but i dont which memory card i should buy, because i play a lot of games on my phone, like need for speed so i need a really fast memory card. so what will be the speed i need fo a memory card?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
For speed, I recommend you keep games and apps on internal memory, and you can put all the songs videos, pictures on an sd card.
But is 95 mb/ps reading speed enough for large games?
(thanx for the answer by the way )

Look at the top of this thread for SD card info. It's sticky'd
keep games and apps on internal memory...that give you speed to launch them

[Q] [?] Internal Storage Partitioning on the Note II

Hey there.
I'm a little confused regarding the internal storage of my VZW Note II. It has 16gb, which I know is less when formatted... there's around 10gb available for apps and files. Isn't that the partition sizing for Samsung's massively bloaty ROM? I'm running AOSP; is there any way to reclaim some of that space? Or I've seen some stuff about dual-booting, but there are way too many disparate GNoteII forums on XDA and I can't find any specific font of information. Is that a way to more efficiently use space? I'm just consistently crunched for space since nothing can use the external SD really, and 10gb goes away quickly nowadays.
Thank you kindly.
I would like to know the same thing. Just flashed and rom and set everything and now I only have about 700MB free space. I don't even run lots of apps. It's the miscellaneous that takes up majority of the space.

Thats 700mb freespace for the system partition which is plenty...apps reside on the internal sd which you should have 10-12gb free.

Exactly. That's 700mb to /system, then the rest goes to app storage and the emulated internal SD card. My phone reports that at 10.33gb total; 10.33gb + 700mb = 11.03gb total known storage across all known partitions. Doesn't that seem a little low?
I know my phone has 2gb of ram but what I am speaking of is the 16gb internal SD storage.

That's what we're speaking of as well. Your phone has 16gb of internal storage which is split across system files and app storage. Any space left over is your "internal SD card". It's how Android works post-Ice Cream Sandwich.
no its not low thats normal...
Well, I know our "16gb" cards are only 14.9gb, marketing considers 1gb = 1,000mb's, but it's really 1024 mb's. So really if you do the math, 16gb by marketing definition equals 14.9gb in reality (16*1,000^3/1,024^3). That explains 1gb at least.
I'd imagine the rest is the baseband and radio software, all that? Is the touchwiz framework always left on the phone even after a full internal format?
How much available space does a "16gb" Nexus 4 have on first boot?

Ah. I did not realize that the RAM was part of that 16gb as well, I thought it was dedicated. That explains it. Thanks

Where'd you see that?
Well according to the email notification I got from XDA, droidstyle's response was:
"no its not low thats normal... The rom is 2gb + 2gb of ram + all of the apps leaves arouns 11gb free."
then when I went to reply that second part wasn't there anymore? But I assume droidstyle is right? 14.9 - 2.0 - 2.0 = 10.9, so... closer?

It seems weird, but I think you're right. It's not only the most logical and mathematically accurate solution, but thinking back on it I believe that's how my poor old Galaxy Nexus functioned as well, it was just far less noticeable since the Gnex had 32gb of memory and only took 1gb of RAM, vs. 16 - 2.

Sent From My Sticky Note, Too?
I have a 32 ultra SD, so I'm pretty set. Currently I have 4.9 GB available on the internal drive. I like to keep a clean drive. If you download music, most if not all will go to the internal. I've looked for mp3 apps that direct the DL's to the ext.SD, but have only found one, and that one didn't work. I believe cache goes on the internal too. Every time you download a ROM like meanbean, liquid smooth, they place a folder on the internal drive. They're empty, but they take up space.
I think the ram is part of the internal.

Oh I have a 32gb Class-10 µSD card in my phone right now. The problem I'm facing is that any sort of app storage can't be moved to external SD... I have one or two pretty massive games and a lot of apps that love to cache reserves of data, and it adds up. I only have about 1.2 gb free storage after clearing all caches, without really any other files to speak of besides a few pictures. Oh well, I can deal. I was just spoiled with storage on the GNex.
