I'm going to a part of Japan where there's more wired internet than wireless.
Can I connect my Galaxy S3 straight to wired internet? I have an OTG USB cable with which the S3 works fine with hubs, mice, keyboards and storage. I have a Hawking USB to wired ethernet (RJ45) adapter. When I plug it all together the adapter lights up green but nothing happens. Is this a software/driver issue and is there an app which overcomes it?
I'm NOT interested in lugging a netbook with me, or any stuff about tethering, or expensive 3G. I will take my Netgear wireless travel router WGR101 "hotspot" if I have to.
Mainly I just want to connect the S3 to an ethernet cable.

There might be a mod out there, i know the transformer tablets support this, but it will be intresting to find out...
My tablet connects to wired internet first time using its OTG connector and the Hawking USB/RJ45 adapter. It's a 7" Eken MB702C using Allwinner Tech Boxchip ARM Cortex™-A8 1.2GHz and running Android 2.3.4. If it can do it, why can't an S3? Is it hardware or drivers and rom? Thanks.
Have you tried using the usb tethering option?
It's purely drivers. USB-OTG has backward-compatibility to standard USB2.0 so it can use any USB-device it can provide enough juice for.
However the kernel has to recognize the USB device and load/activate the corresponding drivers. Then the uerland scripts configuring the (DHCP) IP-address and other settings have to kick in.
Of course ur right d4fseeker, but now what drivers to install? My kernel is 3.0.15 and I really want the eth0 (ethernet interface from cable) in backtrack 5 on my phone... so what can I do??? I have a usb OTG connector that works perfectly with mouses and joysticks but that isnt working with any of my two ethernet to usb (the ethernet to usb shows a light but on the s3 it doesnt show anything because the kernel doesnt recognize it) How to enable the recognition of the ethernet by the kernel ? WHAT DRIVERS?! Thank you.
PS: Does anyone know how to enable monitor mode on samsung galaxy s3 ive seen this post :

you could use the command-line dmesg in Backtrack to show which module is loaded

Take a look at the SiyahKernel (www.gokhanmoral.com). It allows you to add additional drivers to the kernel, if it has not already.
the problem is finding the proper driver and build it to specs.

I want to do it on my S3, I am from India & want to connect my office Ethernet Cable to it to access my office site.

I'm keen to see this progress too - but i wouldnt know where to start with compiling it into the kernel or inserting the mods. The drivers are present in the tablet builds - for example I have it working on the nexus 7 - so porting shouldnt be too hard. Just hope that one of the kernel dev teams has the time and interest to look at this......

You can buy an adapter on eBay, it is about the size of a pack of cards / cigarette pack. Plug the ethernet cable from the hotel into the unit and it then makes the adapter a wireless access point. I bought one about a year ago for exactly a similar reason - traveling to hotels where there is only wireless in the lobby, not the rooms. Unit cost be £15 / $22 - the link in my eBay account has now expired, but search away on eBay.

Now that we have USB DVB-T sticks which are working I was wondering if it would be at all possible to get 3g USB dongles working on the Archos. It would be pretty much the icing on the cake with regard to features.
I think that there are a few chi-pads out there which have at least some support for them.
I would love to be able to assist in the creation of this but alas I suck at the linux (i'm learning though)
It seems that the kernel from 2.6.20 for at least one of the popular Huawei models. Will check the lsusb command with mine later on

I intend to install Ubuntu on my phone and then use a docking station at work to run as a PC.
There are two issues I need some advice on from the good people at xda...
1) I've tried two different USB3 universal docks with an Ubuntu laptop but could not get the attached monitor (via displaylink) to work with Ubuntu 13.04. Ethernet, and USB devices (keyboard, mouse and flash key) work fine.
Anyone found a usb dock that works with Ubuntu 13.04 pre-release?

All of the universal USB laptop docks do not seem to charge the docked device (since they expect a laptop not a smartphone/tablet).

Rough costs in Australia for us would be
Current User
Desktop User : Desktop plus smartphone (nexus) = $700 + $400 = $1100
Laptop user : Ultrabook plus smartphone = $1500 + $400 = $1900
Future User
Ubuntu phone plus docking station = $400 + $200 (say) = $600
Some of this saving, I would expect to go into Canonical support agreement & unlimited phone plans

I don't really understand what you're trying to say here. Assuming you're talking about Ubuntu for Android, the only way to get this to work as soon as the Ubuntu for mobile image is out, is by porting it to a Motorola smartphone that supports Motorola's dock like the one's Canonical uses in their. Or you could get a smartphone that has HDMI.

I have had no luck locating a USB universal dock with which the latest Ubuntu supports the inbuilt displaylink video adapter. Also, none of the docks seem to provide charging over USB to the host device, only the peripherals.

It's not even out yet so it's not a good idea to get a head start.
You're probably correct.
I'm assuming that the OS that boots on the phone is a full Ubuntu 13.04 kernel.
On that basis, I've been testing universal docks with my laptop running Raring Ringtail prereleases.
I expected they'd just work but so far not.

And the Nexus 7 has been a useful test also of the Canonical image for 13.04.
Using a USB OTG cable, I could see that the behaviour was consistent with that of a laptop on the universal dock. Ethernet and USB ports were passed through to the nexus 7 and operated as expected. The displaylink video support seems to be lacking at present.

I can completely see the merrit of your research, and I think you're going down the right path. I too will be looking at implimenting something similar at work, as it just makes sense! I think you are correct - working to find a dock that works with 13.04 on desktop/tablet will be of benefit for docking Ubuntu for Phones, especially the Nex7 as it's running ARM processor. I'll do some research time permitting myself, see if I can get anything working. I only have a targus USB 2.0 dock to play with currently though.
Some more information on this.
Apparently any USB3 docking stations consisting of the Displaylink DL-3000 series adapters DO NOT SUPPORT linux.

It seems like the best bet is to plug a DL-195 series adapter into the USB hub of a DL-3000 based docking station and then your Ubuntu superphone should detect that.

get the minihdmi to hdmi adapter that has the extra hole for the power. I use that connected to my dock with bluetooth keyboard/mouse plugged into the TV running the ubunut via chroot.

I think an MHL to HDMI adapter should do the trick. I picked one up off from Amazon for about $3. We'll see how it does when the Ubuntu Phone OS image is released for the Galaxy Nexus.
My BT keyboard, BT mouse and Samsung HDTV are just begging for some Ubuntu from my phone .

Just bought a cheap tablet a Asus Memo Pad not the HD one the one before.
Single core VIA cpu etc
So the first thing thats been bugging me is that i bought a RJ45 to USB adapter and it doesnt work on my tablet.
I turn off wifi then connect everything and nothing. Anyone knows why ?
The second is it worth it to root my tablet ? Even if its only to get rid of asus app´s ?
If i rooted would i be able to install Android 4.3/4.2 because i got the 4.1 version so the newer ones are better yes ?
Is there any kind of newbie guide to rooting this tablet ?

Yes it is. In fact, the OTG cable I ordered from Amazon arrived today. I'm not allowed to post links yet, but if you search Amazon for "Cable Matters (2-Pack) Micro-USB 2.0 On-The-Go (OTG) Adapter" it's $6.99 right now.
I plugged it into my Note and it read my 8GB USB stick perfectly. I was even able to plug my mouse and keyboard into it!
Totally worth the price. Let me know if you have questions.

Finally I got mine one.
I'm using CM 10.2 by Frankenbiker and works perfectly. I can use my USB Stick and my optical USB mouse.
The only problem is the battery is draining fast when it's connected the usb stick and more with the mouse.

Just got my new Nexus Player and after long search I can't find the right answer.
I want to connect the player to my Ethernet in my house for better connection and if possible to add an external HDD.
Here is my list of questions and I hope that I've got the the right place:
1. I want to have the maximum network speed and I have Giga cables in my walls . Is there a standards in the adapter that I need to buy to have the maximum speed? Or all the adapters have the same speed limit?
2. Is there a way to connect both Ethernet and USB HDD long side? Is there a magic box that have USB and also an Ethernet connection? If there is I would like to get an advise what is the best one to buy.
If someone have an experience what the items I need and have an advice what is the best to buy - I will love to get some links.

For expanded storage you'll need to root and install stickmount. If you want to install large games then you may need foldermount as well.

In Amazon type in "ethernet USB hub", many results will come up. Here is a link to the first one. I don't know for sure if it is compatible or not though.

The problem is that even if the adapter supports full Ethernet speed the USB port on the nexus player will not.
So, you should get the benefit of a stable connection... But it will never be beyond USB 2.0 speeds.
I am connected to 2.5ghz wireless N and I haven't had a problem with 1080p Netflix, no stutters on YouTube and modern combat 4 and 5 both play with no lag.

Can anyone tell me why my USB flash drive doesn't always mount with my Nexus player? I've got a powered Plugable USB hub, with my pny 32gb fat32 format USB drive.
It keeps switching names and sometimes doesn't show up at all until after I rerun stickmount.
This happens after waking from sleep as well. I'm obviously rooted and unlocked what am I missing?
Also how do I activate pro on stickmount after I've purchased it. I just get a weird screenshots about the pro version when clicking upgrade....
