[Q] Cwm format - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In Cwm there are format emmc and format sd card. I heard one of them is the internal sd card and the other is the external but I hear different responses for each, so which one is which?

[Q] Repartitioning ext sd card.

I receintly have been getting not enough space. I have a 16 gig card. I knew it wasnt full. So i looked into it and some how its basically saying i have 2 sd cards in. 1 named sd card, the other is EMMC. The SD card is very low on space. but the emmc is barely touched. i dont know how the card got repartitioned but im willing to wipe out my entire sd card in order to delete the partition so i have 1 big drive again. I have been searching this on the forums for about 2 hours now with no luck on how to just delete the partition. even tryed looking through cwm and the phone settings. right now im currently running cm7 ICS
try this: http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html
Emmc is the internal storage. At least that's what it's referred to as in roms like cm7

Ill have to take a ss and post it cuz its crazy. i dont understand how I have an sd card, internal sd, and emmc with a single sd :-/
I guess if i could just figure out a way to just point the phones default save posistion to the emmc drive i would be ok also
That's the way it's supposed to be. Sd card is your sd card, internal storage is the partition on your internal sd card. for apps and emmc is your internal sd card.
You cannot delete the internal storage partition because that's where your apps reside. Emmc is just like your external sd but internal.

This is a joke right?

I was in Sub-Zero recovery and for some reason the phone cannot MOUNT the EMMC which to the recovery is the External SD card, that I have read. So I decided to PARTITION it, and partitioned it alright, my INTERNAL SD CARD. It completely FORMATTED IT, all my music, my ROM downloads, recovery downlaods. WTF? WHY WOULD IT TOUCH the internal SD card, when i told it to touch the external SD card? And yes I told it to do the external NOT internal.
When I went to mount it, it STILL COULD NOT MOUNT IT. I put my SDCARD into my computer directly it had to format it? There should of been 4GB of FAT32 left, if the partitioning did it correctly. It didn't and I still had to format it. It reads fine in my computer it's an 8gb SDHC card, tell me this phone can't read SDHC??
Why can't this phone read this SD card, when my computer can read it fine, and why did it touch the internal SD card, getting rid of my backups, and everything else? Why would the recovery do that?

What rom and version were you running? CM9 swapped /emmc and /sdcard in one of the latest commits, it's possible the ROM you're running cherrypicked that commit.

Can't see external SD from CWM

When I boot it to CWM from my AT&T galexy S3, I see the following
reboot system now
install zip from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wide cache partition
backup and restore
mounts and storage
advanced
But for some reason I can't find my external SD card, I can see it only from root explorer, the path is
/mnt/extSdCard
So if I save a zip file in that folder, and boot it up through CWM, there is no way can locate that /mnt path. Is there something wrong with my phone ? Is there something I need to install in order to see that path ?
I got no problem with my Galaxy note, I can see that but not with this S3.
Also if I connect the phone using a USB cable, it shows "mtp application" on the menu instead of connect to USB. My other phone will show me its own external SD directory. But with mtp application, I only see "Card and phone" folder.
please help.
Did you try going into Mounts and Storage, then Mount Ext SD Card?
I would recommend getting a Micro Sd adaptor to plug into your laptop/computer. Makes it a lot easier

When I go into "Install from SD Card" the bottom option above "go back" is to install a zip from the external SD card. This is on a T-Mobile one, but if I'm not mistaken aren't we all running the same recovery?
I did try that but it makes no difference.

Is your sdcard formatted exFat or Fat32? Epic CM's v4 recovery couldn't see my 64 gb class 10 SanDisk until I formatted it Fat32.
Hummmm, I can't recall but it was working fine with my Galaxy Note, I pulled it out from that phone and put in the S3. Just wondering why it is not working. Do I have to format it to Fat32 again?

The Note recovery you were using may have supported exfat, whereas the recovery we use now for our GS3's does not (EPIC CM posted in their blog that they would not support exfat). I copied the contents of my sdcard card to my Mac, ran disk utility and formatted it Fat32, and recovery recognizes it just fine.

Is Formatting the External SdCard OK?

I recently upgraded from the Sensation 4g. I had a lot of files on the SdCard when i put it into my shiny new GS3 Tmo. Does the recovery flash to the externel or internel sd card? and if internel, can i format the SdCard with no issues? Thank you.
Its on the internal memory
I believe that the internal SD card is partitioned so its fine to format both

U mean the internal memory? U won't need to format it m8, just delete what's on it and just flash over whats left.
No need for a format, there probably is a section in there to format it though.

Ok but why in others post the people speak about using terminal emulator or dialer code to format sd card?
Usually with rom i used cwm to format but by sgs3 this is not possible or i wrong
It is very safe and will keep your system clear. I tried. No problem

In some versions of CWM, the internal sdcard and external SD (emmc) are flip-flopped. In order to format the internal SD of my galaxy s2 using CWM, I had to choose the option to format emmc. If I chose sdcard (which should represent internal SD), it would have formatted my external micro USB. If you have an external SD, just remove it before trying this procedure so you don't wipe the wrong thing (I have made that mistake).
