Defective microphone - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my Pebble (not Metallic...) Blue SG3 yesterday but had to return it for repair today, because the microphone was faulty. About half of what I said during a conversation would be capped off, so it was pretty useless for calls.
According to my carrier they had not experienced this before, but we've all heard that one before right..
Did anybody else here experience this problem with their SG3?

Hello,
Turn off the noise reduction after all are OK.

Thanks!
I did however already return it for repair, so lets see what they do with it. If I'm lucky they'll update it to xxalf2 which should also do the trick, without removing the noise reduction.
I'll update the post when I get it back!

Where do you turn off noise reduction? I as welll am having mic problems.

Excellent tip. Everytime i would ring someone, they would tell me it sounded like i was talking down a pipe, and that my voice was muffled.
Changing this setting fixed my problem, and now calls are crystal clear.
Cheers.

I am not rooted, does this affect?

I managed to uncheck it thanks to this ( i had to uncheck it DURING a call)
Unfortunatelly there is no difference (checked or unchecked...). The problem is still there.... THEY HAVE TO SOLVE IT.After all its a PHONE
Do you think is hardware or software?
Shall i send it back or wait for un update that may fix it?

so my first night i had major problems with this issue, turned out i was covering the mic which was oppisite of my galaxy 1/2 and after figuring that out it fixed me XD

Mic was indeed defective
Hi,
Got my phone back a while ago, but it was a new unit since they could not repair it.
Guess we'll never know what was wrong, but based on the fact that they swaped it for a new one, it was probably not software related.

I'm not so lucky it seems. I found out about the noise reduction option myself, it didn't really help. The other day I got a new update (the same as quoted), and it's still bad...

[Q] Atrix Low Volume on Mic

My Atrix has been experiencing low volume on the Mic, but not all of the time. I can be talking and then all of a sudden the other party can hardly hear me.
Anyone else experience this type of issue?

I get this all the time when talking to my fiancee or friend they always say they can't hear me. But alot of the times I talk to other people than never say anything about it being low.

Lots of people are experiencing this issue...which is why there was an article about it on Engadget this morning and why it has been publicly acknowledged by Motorola. It's being worked.

Specifically, if I shake the phone, and blow in the mic, it sometimes seems to help.
Pretty strange.
I was about to return the phone on account of this but maybe I'll keep it knowing there's a software issue they will address.

Any updates on this? The other end has trouble hearing me on pretty much every call I make. Should I try and get a replacement from Motorola, or is this believed to be a software issue?
It's incredibly frustrating when your phone doesn't work as a phone ...

I have the same freaking issue! Very annoying having to repeat myself often! Due to this issue and the crappy cameras, I'm gonna return the phone next week!
Follow this thread and please post if you are still having issues after 1.83 and turning off noise suppression. The more of us that let them know this is still a huge issue the more likely they will hopefully do something.
I paid full price and beyond the 30 day return period. Makes me long for the iphone 4, I just hate the battery situation on that..which is the ONLY reason I bought the Atrix...
Other than no one can hear me, its a nice phone...
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/380841#380841
Have any of you tried turning off the noise suppression feature? I know this issue might be more than that though...

I often have difficulty with the person on the other end not being able to hear me. The phone seems to need to be perfectly positioned for the Mic to pick up my voice. Also the speech recognition software seems to be less accurate than it was when I bought the phone a month ago. Has anyone tried to clean the mic?
I have this problem all the time and I can see no difference when using noise suppression or not. Would love to fix this but havn't hear anything about it lately.
I have this issue as well. I turned off noise suppression but for what it's worth, no discernible difference at least that I've noticed. Bummer.
Why is it that every Android phone has this problem? SE X10, HTC Desire Z, Motorola Atrix... Jesus... I just want a working mic and speakerphone for the rare occasion that I use my phone as a phone!!

Nothing beyond the mic on my Atrix sucks. Perhaps more than others?
I chatted with Motorola about my microphone issue.
The suggested going to Settings > Applications> Manage Applications > filter to All> scroll and go to "Media audio Effects" then select "Clear Data". After doing so reboot the phone.
I did so and the microphone works much better now.

I suddenly start sounding muffled...
when my wife goes out of town...
and I go on a drinking rampage.
But then she comes back, and everything is back to normal.
Sorry OP, for makign a joke here. Yeah like others said, try factory reset and then restore factory firmware.
Some ppl claim that this happens when u r using a case cover blocking the mic for noise reduction. Try using it without and see if this solves the problem!!
Hope this helps!!

With the phone itself. It seems to be a certain location your mouth is to the mic just causes muffled sound. And the noise cancellation seems to be part of the issue, doesn't work correctly. So turning it off sometimes helps.
well i called O2, and they are swapping me a brand new one tomorrow, as i have had one month!, ordered on 25th May and called yesterday being 25th June.
they are bring me one to my house - that is service!
i did try flashing stock rom, but no difference, tested my mates and his sounds fine, pretty sure there is an issue. oh well a new one will do!

Caller can't hear me!

Received a refurbished certified like new Droid Razr and everything is perfect except one basic thing, when I place a call or when I answer a call the person on the other end can't hear me at all. I can hear them just fine but they can't hear me. Can this be fixed or is it a lemon phone and should I return it?

Try a full wipe or a factory reset. If you have still this problem, contact your operator or Motorola...
I took it in...a software upgrade fixed it. Lost my root and no wifi tether will not work....luckily i found the non-rooted wifi app, so life is good.

If even with a stock rom the problem persists it's that the microphone is out of service...
I have the same issue with my MAXX... ICS 4.04 went back to stock SAME issue... Went back to ICS 4.04 all fresh installs. Same issue. If i yell into the phone you can hear me, speaker phone you can hear a little more of me when i talk. Other then that the people i call cannot hear a dang word im saying. Stupid stupid cheap Microphones installed in these! Looks like ill be calling Verizon and getting another MAXX to bad i have a limited one right now and wont be able to get a new limited one :-(
Maybe limited means "limited ability for anyone to hear me". Maybe you don't want that 1.

I wouldn't call it a cheap microphone motorola has the best microphones for voice quality of any phone today. perhaps you could call it fragile, but i wouldn't even say that, I've seen only one other person report a mic hardware problem on the net. i think maybe you're one of the few unlucky ones who got a dud. just go get it fixed under warranty
Had this problem once, reboot fixed it for me!
You can also try using one of those compressed air cans to blow out the mics and headphone jack.

Anyone else not liking the wifi issue/bluetooth audio?

Its starting to bug me, especially the wifi while screen is off being disabled when I have not selected that anywhere. Also definitely feels spotty and doesnt load all my data right away when I turn screen on, like its slow. No way I should have to use keepalive app for wifi to remedy this. Bluetooth audio in my car sounds pretty bad. It cant just be my device as others have reported similar findings.
What are your thoughts, will you deal with this and just keep your device?
Have you possibly thought about another device?

This phone is new. 1st software release for our ATT phones. Report those bugs to HTC/ATT, they will address it. Fixes will come in future updates if the devs dont fix them first. All new phones have bugs, all. They normally get fixed
It was also before but all started 2 years ago when they were fiddling with battery to last longer.
When you stream music WiFi to router and then amp when screen is off it can effect constant playback.
But you figured out what's caused it.
Even with mp3 not only heavy flacs.

Yes my bluetooth call quality is bad. My earpiece call quality is fuzzy and buzzes. Am I the only one?
*EDIT* After unrooting, relocking the bootloader, factory reset, all that fun stuff, the call quality finally corrected. Then got worse again. I figured out that it was my Google account screwing around with settings because whether you set it to or not, it tries to restore your previous settings. After wiping out that account and rebooting, call quality is wonderful.

Yes I was getting ready to go to the AT&T store to swap for one with a non defective earpiece. But I wiped my primary Gmail account from the phone, rebooted, plugged it in to charge for a little while so I could do some schoolwork and call quality was fine. So I don't know if it pulled over bad settings from my old inspire or what. Try the call quality while there is no Google account signed in after the reboot.

Lol, yes correct that how WiFi is suppose to work on devices. I have zero WiFi issues myself. When it's enabled and i connect to say my home wifi it appears on my device and stays connected all throughout my home. Flawless for me. When wifi is disconnected or turned off well of course it is no longer displayed on the notification bar, it's turned off or not connected, why would it still be displayed up there?

I just wanted to make sure that the lack of push notification that some see is really due to a disconnect of wifi. If the wifi symbol is still there and they don't get push notifications it is probably something else...I saw many people complaining about hardware defects and in 50% of cases it was because they used task killers or battery "optimizers" that disabled sync and other important processes.

Well, I was serious. Then after an overnight charge the problem started again. Still fuzzy and buzzy on the earpiece. More a problem with volume than frequency. Its the same as the bluetooth call quality. Reminds me of when A/V pregain is set far higher than postgain for manual distortion control. I think the values for volume amplification are screwed up somewhere. I like the phone, I just don't wanna deal with crappy call quality forever. I could even deal with the bootloader locking if the other issues would get fixed (well. I already have my code.). Got five days to make a call on keep it or exchange before the no questions asked 14 day exchange window for AT&T closes.
UPDATE: Update on the earpiece. I was just about to swap it out but then during the call it stopped buzzing and became clear. It did this when I took it away from my face and did something onscreen during the call. If it was a hardware issue, it would do it every call and during the whole call in my opinion.

Muffled voice, poor call quality issue - still Android 7.0?

way back Google has acknowledged this issue and hoping it will be fixed in Android 7.0 update, but still there. This issue seems to be related to the noise-cancelling mic found on the back of the device.
I know some people posted some workaround such as covering up the mic fixes the issue, or persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=true, and changing it to false in build.prop (if rooted, which I am not).
I know there are tons of post related this (searching Google gives many of them), I was just wondering if anyone seen any improvement after 7.0 update or pretty much the same or any other workaround that worked for you..
share your thoughts and findings would be great..
It's a hardware defect. RMA your device and get one that works. I had the same issue with my first device. Returned it and now all is good in the world... You shouldn't have to disable the noise cancelling mic... It's there for a reason

and I know noise cancelling mic. is there for a good reason, but it is better people can hear me when I speak is more important, so I am planing to put a small tape on mic back of the phone and give a try and see if any improvement...

I've putting up with this problem for nearly a year now. It sucks that Google continually ignores that fact it exists and none of the major tech sites have taking them to task over it. I've only now read of two people who have resolved the issue via RMA. Everyone else who RMA their phones reported the same behavior with the replacement according to the Google forums.
Anyhow, I just followed the advice of someone from Reddit which I posted below and I then tested twice with my one friend who always have a problem hearing me when I call her iPhone. Now, the problem seems to be cleared up but I don't know if this was a permanent fix or not. Hopefully, I will know by early Nov. which is when my 1 year warranty expires.
----------------
Restart your phone in safe mode. Hold the power button until 'Power off' comes up. Then touch and hold that box until it asks to reboot in safe mode. Make a call in safe mode and see if that works. Then reboot normally. Fixed the problem of my phone calls sounding bad. It resets something, not sure but it fixed my problem. If that doesn't work then RMA (They will probably ask you to do what I just mentioned since this is what just happened to me).

Here is my add to this. I was a purchaser of a Note 7. Returned it during the recall and bought a Nexus 6p directly from Google. I received the device and was having issues with people on the other end complaining of echoing if they could hear me. Alot of time I could hear them and they couldn't hear me at all. I called Google and explained the situation. They shipped me my replacement device (which by the way was a new device and not a factory refurb). My replacement device does not have the audio issues and I am extremely happy. So I can confirm that it is indeed a hardware issue and the only fix is an RMA.
Do you guys have a case on your phones? I found that my Spigen case was causing issues. It seems to have stretched a bit and was covering the noise cancelling mic.

Hello there!
Same problem here, opposite side is always telling me, that I sound like from garbage/drain or some pipe and also opposite side has echo of it's voice, so practically they hear only themselves with echoes and me very bad or not at all...
I'm using my 6P with Spigen Rugged Armor, and I also tried to make calls without it, and it looked like it's better, so I tried another cover case - Nilkin Perfect Fit, same problems as Rugged Armor and now for the third time, I'm trying Spigen Thin Fit and don't be surprised, it's all the same. So again I tried to use phone without cover and problems appeared same as with cover, so there is no straight connection between cover and these problems in my opinion!
I was preparing to make a ROOT and disable back microphone, but I've read some posts about it and decided to try RMA first, I will come back, how it will end up.
I have the same problem, but only when using the internal mic. Other end says I sound muffled, and I'm only 10" away from the mic. I have to be about an inch or so away and NOT on speaker for them to understand me. I can hear them clear as can be. I have the Unicorn Beetle case, and the noise canceling mic isn't covered, or dirty. I'll try a reboot into safe mode, call, and reboot again. Of course, it could also be just certain people are having a hard time hearing me. I'll see what I can come up with.

This worked for me. Thx!
For those who sufferef from muffled voice/bad microphone, try loose the screw at the bottom back of your 6p, you have to open the cover first by using guitar pick/cutter>loose the screw (centre)>put the cover back> completed. No complaint from the other end at all.
Stock 6p, dp4
Solution- Safemode restart...
Thanks guys..I just tried the Safemode restart and it worked perfectly. Then restart in normal mode and the interference could be heard again..so it's one of the apps..not the handset. Thanks again, saved a lot of hassle by avoiding the RMA nightmare.
Ok, so here's my solution/problem - I've rooted, edited build.prop:
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=true ---->>> false
persist.audio.fluence.speaker=true --->>> flase
It fixes the issue with garbled/muffled voice from both me and the person on another end; however, now the speaker volume is too high (even on the lowest setting). Editing lines in mixer_path xml makes phone calls unusable - the dialer shows it's connected but I cannot hear anything and the person says their volume is stuck at 0 ....
Any one knows the correct way to edit the "steps" for speaker colume for voice calls?

Is it a known issue when I recover from a backup, wifi won't work? It was a full backup - system, data, etc
Had to put back the official 8.0 image, just rooted and getting my stuff set up, will try the "speaker" toggle when done in an hour.
